"first look" is up next. it's tuesday, june 7th. right now on "first look," making history. hillary clinton reaches that magic number of delegates, 2,383, to become the democrat's presumptive nominee. trump doubles down, ordering surrogates to step up attacks on the judge overseeing the trump university case. a state of emergency in florida as tropical storm colin moves ashore. and plus the broncos get the white house treatment and car pool karaoke with lynn manuel. a woman will top a major party's presidential ticket.

hillary clinton has passed the threshold to become the presumptive democratic nominee. clinton has secured the 2,383 delegates needed thanks to new pledges from more than a dozen super delegates. she spoke about embarking on history at a rally last night. >> according to the news, we are in the brink of a historic, historic, unprecedented moment. but we still have work to do, don't we? we have six elections tomorrow. and we're going to fight hard for every single vote, especially right here in california. >> but the clinton campaign cautioned against the news, worried it would suppress voter turnout at today's primaries. they issued this statement, this is is an important milestone but there are six states that are voting tuesday with millions of people heading to the polls and hillary clinton is working to earn every vote. we look forward to tuesday night when hillary clinton will clinch

not only the win in the popular vote but also the majority of pledged delegates. that did not stop the campaign from using last night's news to its advantage. putting out a fund-raiser highlighting the nomination. bernie sanders said the news amounts to nothing more than a media frenzy. his campaign said, it is unfortunate that the media in a rush to judgment are ignoring the democratic national committees clear statement that it is wrong to count the votes of super delegates before they actually vote at the convention this summer. secretary clinton does not have and will not have the requisite number of pledged delegates to get the nomination. here's what he said to kntv last night. >> well, i think that -- i think what according to the democratic national committee what they should not be doing is lumping pledged delegates -- i.e., real delegates with super delegates who may or may not change their mind, but who do not vote until july 25th. so everybody knows exactly how

all the super delegates are going to vote on july 25th that's great for them. but i don't know that. tomorrow in california we have the most important primary. the people of california have the right to determine who is going to be president of the united states. not necessarily having to listen to a.p. or nbc. and i hope that that i will come out in large -- they will come out in large numbers and make it clear. >> those comments come after nbc news learned of a secret call between sanders and president obama this weekend. administration officials say the president could endorse hillary clinton as early as this week. still sanders has his sights set on california. he will spend tonight holding an election night rally there and hillary clinton is expected to watch the results pour in from brooklyn where her campaign headquarters are located. meanwhile, trump finds himself being slammed from the left, right and the center for his continued attacks on a federal judge because of the judge's rulings and his mexican heritage. and while republican voices are asking trump to soften his attacks, he may do the very

opposite. nbc's hallie jackson has the details. >> reporter: despite new calls from republicans to dig himself out, donald trump's instead digging in. reportedly ordering surrogates to escalate attacks on the judge overseeing the lawsuit against him. overruling his own kamg pain's original in -- instructions. he said that curiel is biased because of his mexican heritage. >> i want him to be just -- all i want him to do is give me a fair shake. >> his campaign saying that's no racism tied to this whatsoever. hillary clinton leveling her own attack on msnbc. >> what he is saying with respect to the judge, that's racist attack. >> reporter: trump's not toning it done the way some republicans want him to. denouncing his comments but not his candidacy. >> of course it's inappropriate. >> he should stop insulting people, but the republican primary voters have spoken. >> quite frankly, i'm very

on his feud with the judge. >> i don't care if the judge is mexican or not. i'm going to do great with the mexican people because i provide jobs, but we're being treated very unfairly. >> six states hold their nominating contest today and trump is expected to make remarks tonight at his westchester golf club. our special coverage kicks off with chuck todd at 5:00 p.m. right here on msnbc. more than half of florida is under a state of emergency as tropical storm colin made landfall last night. 6,000 national guardsmen are on stand by. and the storm has already flooded low-lying areas. officials even closed the sunshine skyway bridge spanning tampa bay due to high wind concerns. look at this, water spoutds have -- spouts have popped up near the coastline. it will be moving along the southeast coast this morning. nbc meteorologist bill

karins is tracking it. >> we'll take it. no damage, it's a big rainstorm and that's pretty much it. we can deal that with in the southeast. they're calling it still a tropical storm, but it's getting absorbed into the cold front. right along the georgia/south carolina coastline, winds are estimated at 50 miles per hour. it is racing to the northeast at 31 miles per hour. and in tampa and orlando and here in the outer bank, that's it. by 2:00 p.m. it's headed out into the open waters. i don't expect many problems whatsoever. the future radar as we stop at noon today, all of the rain is completely done with the system. so all of the damage that's been done which was very little has already happened. i don't think anything else will happen that will be bad and this cold front will clear the coast. up in the northeast, we will see that cold front kick through.

it's warm and humid. we are going to see a chance of strong to severe thunderstorms in new hampshire, vermont, maine, all of the state of massachusetts, northern connecticut. the timing of those storms will be typical late afternoon storms. we're timing it at 1:00 or 2:00 in binghamton, new york. by springfield in boston, between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m., betty. north east, they'll have some thunderstorms and hail later on. colin, we are about done with. >> let's get that out of here. thank you. in los angeles the convicted serial killer known as the grim sleeper was sentenced to ten death sentences. one for each of the victims. they were brutally murdered between 1985 and 2007 amid suspicions there could be many more. lonnie franklin jr. was arrested at his home following a sting operation with an undercover officer posing as a waiter and

several several sisters and their children have taken claims along with man in federal prison who alleges to be the pop star's son. potential heirs have until friday to file. and today is being declared prince day on what his 58th birthday. brittany the last known surviving search and rescue dog died in texas. the golden retriever was in declining health and had to be put to sleep. and president obama hosted the denver broncos yesterday. he presented him with a jersey and a signed team helmet. president obama praised the team and jokingly referred to the now retired quarterback peyton manning as, quote, this guy from the commercials. yeah. that guy. all right. now to outrage over the sentence for a brutal campus sexual assault. it came to light when two stanford grad students saw a man on top of a woman who was passed out if an alley next to the dumpster. many are now sharing that woman's powerful message that she delivered directly to her attacker. as the judge gave him what many

see as a far too lenient punishment. here's nbc's cynthia mcfadden. >> reporter: a jury found a swimming star guilty of three felo felony sexual assault crimes. he could have served more than a decade in prison. instead he'll serve three months in county jail. >> thing this sen -- i think this sentence is inappropriate. >> reporter: stanford law professor is outraged by judge aaron persky's sentence and is leading an effort to get him off the bench. >> getting good grades or swimming fast or being good at lacrosse is a basis for giving you an exception from the california state minimum penalties, then basically you're saying it's open season on college women. >> reporter: the judge cited his age and lack of criminal record at the sentencing. the victim who admits she was

drunk the night of the assault wrote a 13-page letter and urged a long prison sentence. i was naked all the way down to my boots, legs spread apart and had been penetrated bay foreign object. on the stand, turner testified the sexual activity was consensual. turner's father who said his son would suffer throughout his life as a registered sex offender urged leniency in sentencing. his life will never be the one that he dreamed about and worked so hard to achieve. that is a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20-plus years of life. >> 20 minutes and he didn't have time to realize that this woman was not responsive? >> reporter: most of the victims's written statement was directed at him. we can be in denial or accept it head on. i accept the pain. you accept the punishment.

re-election group four days after it was looking at a probe into the trump university. she nixed the suit citing insufficient grounds to proceed. today trump has donated over $253,000 to florida officials. from meryl streep to oprah winfrey and others appeared with first lady michelle obama in the launch for the united state of women white house summit. this will focus on gender equality, economic empowerment, civic engagement and more. the event caps first lady's final year focusing on women and children. and stephen colbert had an interesting answer to trump's feud with the california judge presiding over his case. >> trump's point is he cannot be judged by a member of any group that he has offended. so that means no mexican or muslim judge, no women judges unless she's a ten.

with the a.p. and nbc saying she had clinched the nomination. they want to participate even though she won the race last night. >> well, bernie sanders is taking issue with counting super delegate votes because they can change at any moment, so even with that math, how plausible is his path forward? >> like there's 0% chance that bernie sanders will be the democratic nominee. he's actually going back to burlington, vermont, to really think about things and evaluate the race forward. president obama is expected to endorse hillary what week. so that will be enormous pressure on sanders to drop out and really support hillary and work for her to stop donald trump from being elected president. >> speaking of donald trump, we reported earlier that the donald trump family foundation donated to the florida attorney general who was considering joining a state problem into trump university. that a.g. later nixed the suit. how will that affect his campaign? >> well, at least it's not a controversy based on race. just old fashioned money.
