in that regard because he's my friend and now he's the nominee of my party, so i'm happy to help him. whether he can learn anything or not, only time will tell and i'm certainly not con ceited enough to think the guy who beat me i'm going to teach anything to. anything i can do to help i'm happy to do so. my relationship with senator booker is well chronicled. i like senator booker, i have great respect for senator booker and we've been friends over the last, gosh now, 14 years. so i have great respect for corey, he's a good didn't i and i like him. as to whether or not he should be hillary clinton's vice president, one, that's a decision only she can make. and two, i wouldn't want to express an opinion because if i did, i might actually hurt his chances so i don't want to do that to corey. any other questions? >> governor, at any point do you think mr. trump's rhetoric has gone too far? was there any point when you said, wow, that went over the
8:01 am
limit? >> i am sure if i sat back and thought about it that there would be times that i would think that there were things that he had that he shouldn't have said. quite frankly he's admitted there are things that he said that he shouldn't have said but that happens to anybody in politics who speaks their mind. if you have this many microphones and cameras in front of you on a regular basis and you're not a preprogrammed robotic politician, you're going to make some statements at times that you wish you could take back. i've done it, he's done it and anybody who's honest in this business has done it so that doesn't make him any different than anybody else who's run for office before. frankly, from my perspective, it's refreshing to have somebody who is willing to speak their mind and you know is not reading from a script. there's lots of things you can say about donald. he's not reading from a script, i can guarantee that. >> lindsey graham said you should consider this an offramp. >> lindsey graham has changed his mind about who he's endorsing and not endorsing so
8:02 am
many different times that it's hard for me to keep track. i think senator graham has lost any credibility that he may have had at any time to give an opinion on this. the fact is that senator graham was for himself, then he was for jeb. then i think he was for marco. then i think he was for ted after he told everybody that ted could be murdered on the floor of the senate by a fellow senator and he wouldn't get one vo for conviction. then i heard he said nice stuff about donald and now he's saying something else. lindsay has lost any credibility he's had. he should worry about going back to south carolina and rebuild his base in south carolina or he won't be in the united states senate much longer. >> governor, you seem to be saying that you don't necessarily disagree with the idea that the judge's ethnic character -- >> i'm not answering that question. >> what about violence at trump rallies? >> i think it's awful that bernie sanders and hillary clinton have sent their supporters there in order to commit violent acts. and it's a terrible thing. and i think that both senator
8:03 am
sanders and secretary clinton this week denounced the people finally who are supporters of theirs who are going to donald's rallies only to create violence. we saw that going as far back as chicago a couple of months ago. these are people who say that they're open and tolerant and understanding of other's views, yet they stand outside and commit violent protests. you can peacefully protest wherever you want. you oppose a candidate, go and protest peacefully but they don't do that, they commit violent acts and that's wrong. that's wrong to be anybody to do. so quite frankly, you know, secretary clinton and senator sanders should in my view be more outspoken and more direct about the fact that they want to instruct their supporters not to be violent when they're protesting at another candidates' rallies. it's simply wrong. >> do you worry about cleveland? >> i don't worry about cleveland at all. cleveland will have great secret service protection as every convention i've been to has had. i was there in 2000 in philadelphia, i was there in 2012 in tampa.
8:04 am
and i'm sure that cleveland will have the same level of great protection, separate areas for protesters an all the rest of that that they have at every national convention they'll have in philadelphia at the democratic national convention. no, i don't worry about cleveland at all. i think cleveland will be a celebration of our nominee and the official beginning of the fall campaign and that will be a good thing. >> anything to say about hillary clinton now that she has officially clinched the nomination? >> nothing more than i've said already. listen, she is -- she is simply in my view unqualified to be president of the united states and i think the country would move in an even worse direction than it's moved in the last eight years with barack obama if in fact hillary clinton were elected president. so whether she's officially the nominee or she was just assumed to be the nominee doesn't change my view of hillary clinton. so thank you all very much. appreciate it. >> thank you, governor. >> we're listening to governor chris christie. he just cast his vote for donald trump. his party's presumptive nominee. but you also heard governor
8:05 am
christie say every part of his body wishes that he were the nominee. he described the latest controversy involving donald trump attacking a federal judge based on his ethnic heritage as a kerfuffle, and even took a swing at senator lindsey graham who now says that at some point the country or love of the country has to trump some of the rhetoric from the gop nominee. so this is an interesting, i think, news conference from chris christie. you see the scorched earth attitude from donald trump to chris christie that even within their own party if someone goes against trump, they are willing to take that person down. and the latest potential victim of that, senator lindsey graham. but right now on msnbc, hillary clinton famously said in 2008 that the glass ceiling had, quote, about 18 million cracks in it. but has she finally broke through? and can the presumptive democratic nominee bring in bernie sanders' supporters who are voting in california right
8:06 am
now? plus donald trump doubles down on attacking the federal judge overseeing cases involving trump university. he calls on his supporters to escalate attacks on the judge and even journalists. what the trump campaign is saying about this report. we'll have a representative from the campaign join us live. i'm tamron hall coming live for you this morning from the famous pier here in santa monica, california. the state that is the biggest prize, as six states hold primaries or caucuses today. ahead of those contests, nbc news is now declaring hillary clinton the presumptive democratic nominee, marking an historic moment. secretary clinton is the first woman to be the presumptive presidential nominee of any major political party in this country's history and all of this after her delegate total reached 2,384, one more than the number needed to clinch the nomination. that total rose late yesterday when she was awarded a few more pledged delegates from sunday's puerto rico primary and more
8:07 am
superdelegates declared their support of clinton. but last night she did not declare victory and bernie sanders is vowing to fight on. >> according to the news, we are on the brink of a historic, historic, unprecedented moment. but we still have work to do, don't we. we have six elections tomorrow, and we're going to fight hard for every sing 'em vote, especially right here in california. >> the point is that tomorrow in california we have the most important primary. the people of california have the right to determine who is going to be president of the united states, not necessarily having to listen to a.p. or nbc. >> as we mentioned, the sanders campaign called the declaration a rush to judgment. the senator's argument centers on those so-called
8:08 am
superdelegates. >> i think according to the democratic national committee what they should not be doing is lumping pledged delegates, i.e. real delegates, with superdelegates who may or may not change their mind but who do not vote until july 25th. >> now, exactly eight years ago today, hillary clinton conceded to then senator barack obama in an interview with rachel maddow. secretary clinton called on senator sanders to do the same. >> on june 7th in 2008 i had a much closer race with then senator obama than senator sanders has with me. the palm lar vote was neck in neck. the delegate gap was much smaller. but i took the position that, you know, he had a lead in the pledged delegates. that's what we look at.
8:09 am
that's what superdelegates look at. and i withdrew and i also endorsed minimum. and i knew how important it was that we unify the democratic party. i think it's equally important this time around. >> what's your reaction to him casting the race that way, does that frustrate you? >> i find it perplexing. what he basically seems to be saying is that the will of the people should be overturned. i have this very substantial lead in the popular vote, more than 3 million votes. i have a very significant lead in pledged delegates. he's basically seems to be suggesting that superdelegates should overturn the will of the people. that is just hard for me to understand. it's never happened before. it's not going to happen this time. >> nbc's kristen welker joins us live now from the clinton campaign headquarters in brooklyn, new york.
8:10 am
so, kristen, secretary clinton holding a primary night party there in brooklyn. what are the expectations for tonight that you're hearing from the campaign? >> reporter: well, clinton campaign officials telling me just this morning, tamron, they are feeling very confident heading into tonight. they feel very good about their chances in new jersey. polls show them with a double-digit lead there. california they think is going to be close, but they are cautiously optimistic. secretary clinton marking the fact that this is an historic moment, but you will notice and as you pointed out, tamron, he is not declaring victory yet. why? she still wants voters to go to the polls in california. california is going to be key. if she wins there, it essential low takes away any remaining argument senator sanders should have for staying in this race. her tone is so critical because she doesn't want to alienate or upset senator sanders' supporters in these final hours. she's going to need them get on board with her if and when she does in her terms clinch the
8:11 am
nomination. i've been talking to her campaign officials who tell me that if she wins a majority of pledged delegates tonight that she will come out and essentially declare victory. you're going to hear her make a couple of key points in her speech. she'll set the stakes of this election. echo a lot of the themes we have been hearing in recent weeks in terms of setting this as a campaign between her and donald trump. something that she has been arguing is a campaign that will either move the country forward or take the country backward. those are her terms. secondly, tamron, she's going to talk about the importance of party unity. she'll toult the fact that she worked with senator obama back in 2008 an is calling on senator sanders to do the same. and finally, she's going to highlight the historic significance of this moment, the fact that she will become the first woman ever to clinch her party's nomination. but again, the clinton campaign's message to voters today, get out there and vote. of course our network, the a.p., has called this for her but they are not ready to call this a
8:12 am
victory just yet, tamron. >> all right, kristen, thank you. let me bring in hillary clinton's chief campaign strategist and pollster joel benenson who joins us from our msnbc headquarters. thanks for joining us. >> thank you for having me, tamron. >> let me get your reaction to the latest from senator bernie sanders where he is hoping for the superdelegates to save the day for him. steve kornacki was on earlier today and he looked at other contested conventions. we've not seen in our country's history where a ground swell of superdelegates changed their mind and went for the other side. so based on history, it appears that bernie sanders does not have a solid argument, but he has a solid hold on thousands of young voters that hillary clinton needs. >> is there a question there? >> yes, there's a question. what is your reaction. that's what i said in the beginning. >> i'm sorry. it would be unprecedented. it's kind of surprising that senator sanders is talking about
8:13 am
overturning the will of the people by pledged delegates somehow, changing the outcome here. it's also surprising given the fact that he's been in this campaign for a year. it's been a long campaign. we have fought through almost every state. we want people to go out and vote tonight. but hillary clinton has a commanding lead not just in the popular vote, she has a commanding lead and will probably end the night with a -- she will end the night with a majority of the pledged delegates. so by every test, senator sanders articulated for a year, hillary clinton is the nominee of the party and should be and hopefully he will do what he said he did and do everything he can to help defeat donald trump in the fall because that's the real threat we face as democrats and as a country right now. >> but prior to defeating donald trump, he still wants to defeat hillary clinton, so with that said, how worried are you and the campaign that he does have a solid hold on voters that you need? how worried are you?
8:14 am
>> well, look, i think that there is a tremendous overlap between bernie sanders voters and hillary clinton voters. there are some on each side who are less favorable towards the other. but the vast majority are democrats, they are progressive and liberal and moderate democrats and they know what's at stake. when we have a candidate on the other side like donald trump who's now being denounced by people in his own party for making racially tinged bigoted comments about a sitting american judge because he happens to be of mexican heritage, who's talking about banning muslims, that kind of divisiveness undermines american values and i think it is dangerous to our country and i think everybody on the progressive side of the democratic party understands that and believes that. and to not participate in the effort to defeat donald trump -- >> but that's not true, joel. that's not true. they don't all believe that. you have a number of bernie sanders supporters, in fact we'll show some of them during our show, you look at your
8:15 am
social media, i know you see them as well, they still see this as bernie or bust. i know you want to pivot to donald trump and that's logical, but right now you have a very powerful progressive who is not ready to leave the race. >> well, he is not right now today and no one is asking him to leave the race today. it is interesting to note that before hillary clinton conceded the race to barack obama in 2008, senator sanders said by all measures barack obama is the nominee of the party. the more important thing here is that senator sanders has a role to play here going forward. he has said it, we believe it, we want him to help. we believe he will help. i think that when this thing is settled, which it will be very shortly, everybody will be expecting senator sanders to do what he said, which is use the enthusiasm of his supporters to join forces and make sure that donald trump doesn't become president of the united states. >> all right, joel, thank you so much for your time. it's always great to talk to
8:16 am
you. thank you. >> thanks, tamron. so with hillary clinton now being called the presumptive democratic nominee, there are new fears of lower voter turnout here in california. in fact the "sacramento bee" reports campaigns across the state were working hard to ensure the news did not further discourage californians from going to the polls. joining me now, antonio villaraigosa, one of many canvassing the state. what do you see happening tonight in your state? >> i expect it will be a narrow win, but a win for hillary clinton. >> is there going to potential low be an impact from the news last night that hillary clinton is the presumptive nominee? how does that affect the vote here, if it does? >> it will depress the vote somewhat, but both campaigns i think will be working really hard to get out the vote. we know that in the early voting, hillary has a lead, but we're not going to rest on our laurels. we're going to work really hard. we're going to knock on as many
8:17 am
doors and call as many voters to get them out and to make sure that they get out in support of hillary clinton. >> clearly it's still early, but some would say the die has been cast. both of the candidates focused heavily on california with their message. if bernie sanders pulls out a victory in california, the big prize for tonight, what does that mean? >> it means he won california. she will still be the nominee. i expect that she'll win california. but look, she's ahead in superdelegates, she's ahead in pledged delegates. mr. sanders has said a number of times he doesn't believe that the superdelegate process is a good one and yet he's trying to convince those same superdelegates to come to his side, even though she has 3 million more votes. i expect after tonight, whatever happens that mr. sanders will agree with most democrats that hillary clinton is our nominee.
8:18 am
we ought to get behind her and we ought to stop trump because you've heard a lot on the republican and democratic side not just about the comments that mr. trump makes about judges and muslims and deporting -- forcibly deporting 11 million people, building these walls, this is a man who's not ready to be commander in chief. hillary is. and i expect that all of us need to get behind hillary and stop trump. >> it's interesting talking with you and joel, both have decided to gingerly walk around bernie sanders staying in the race. that's my ride coming to get me. the truck picking me up. i apologize. dan rather was on with steve kornacki this morning and he said it is over. the race is over and bernie sanders will hurt hillary clinton potentially if he remains in this race through the
8:19 am
convention. when do you and other supporters go from the del kaicate walk ard to the more forceful push if he doesn't win california tonight? >> whether he wins california tonight or not, and i expect that hillary will win because we're going to get that vote out, but no matter what happens, she will be the nominee and i expect that he will get behind her and so will most of his voters. look, i've worked this state a long time. i've been speaker of the assemb assembly, mayor and i've been in public office for 20 years. i know many of these voters. i have two millennials. and i can tell you that the vast majority of them will get behind hillary clinton. they understand that donald trump is a threat to our values, to who we are as a nation. they're going to work hard. in fact they may be some of the hardest workers to stop trump. >> before i let you go, i do have to ask you to respond to chris christie saying that it's bernie sanders and hillary clinton supporters who cause the
8:20 am
chaos that we saw in san jose, california, that these are plants creating a violent situation at trump rallies. your reaction to that? >> it's absolutely untrue. that's without any merit. but let me just say this, there is no room for that kind of violence on either side. and anybody thinking that beating up trump supporters is going to help the democrats or hillary clinton is just absolutely wrong, or sanders. and so i would hope that they would understand that that kind of violence is just unacceptable. >> mr. mayor, thank you so much for your time. we greatly appreciate it. >> thank you. and coming up live from california, donald trump's campaign is push back on a report that he is urging his team to intensify attacks against the federal judge overseeing cases involving trump university. this as more republicans voice their concerns on trump's latest comments. and developing now, we just received a new update on the remnants of tropical storm colin

8:24 am
in the last hour, house speaker paul ryan slammed donald trump's recent comments on the ethnic background of the judge overseeing cases involving trump university. speaking at an anti-poverty event, ryan called those remarks indefensible but he still declined to walk back his endorsement of trump. >> i disavow these comments. i regret those comments he made. claiming a person can't do the job because of their race is kind of the textbook definition of a racist comment.
8:25 am
do i believe hillary clinton is going to be the answer to solving these problems? i do not. i believe we have more common ground on the policy issues of the day and more likelihood of getting our policies enacted with him than we do with her, but i do absolutely disavow those comments. ike they're wrong. i don't think they're right headed and the thinking behind it is something i don't even personally relate to. >> ryan's comments come as trump's campaign is pushing back against a report that he is urging his team to intensify those attacks. now, according to bloomberg politics, during a conference call with campaign surrogates yesterday, trump demanded they step up criticism of judge curiel as well as journalists, telling the group we will overcome. i've always won and i'm going to continue to win and that's the way it is. the report also claims that former governor jan brewer of arizona was on the phone call, interrupted to inform trump that his own campaign sent an e-mail asking surrogates to stop talking about the lawsuit. trump reportedly then said take that order and throw it the hell
8:26 am
out. now, when asked about the bloomberg report, trump's campaign manager, corey lewandowski, told nbc news, quote, the story is not accurate but refused to specify inaccuracies. hours after the report, trump appeared on fox news and seemed to some to soften his tone. >> do you regret making it personal with the judge? >> look, i've had very, very unfair decisions. people said this should have gone away a long time ago on summary judgment. i don't care if the judge is mexican or not, i'm going to do great with the mexican people because i provide jobs so i don't care about mexican but we're being treated very unfairly, bill, very, very unfairly. >> peter alexander joins me now from outside trump tower in manhattan. peter, you've reported there was a phone call between reince priebus and trump this morning. what do we know about that call? >> we know they speak often and they have spoken where the topics included donald trump's
8:27 am
comments about gonzalo curiel, this federal judge here. no more specifics beyond that, but obviously this has been a contentious relationship at times between the rnc and donald trump, who at this point is in fact the de facto leader of the party. what we hear increasingly from many republicans is this frustration, what they think makes this situation worse is the fact that donald trump has been speaking so publicly in litigating a lawsuit about a private business, but from his position at the head of the party he is in fact hurting the party right now. you heard paul ryan who said that the comments were indefensible. just a short time ago we also heard from chris christie. he is really the first major supporter of donald trump to come out and defend not just trump but in effect the comments. he said he doesn't know a lot about the situation with the judge but he says that he knows donald trump well and, tamron, he insists that he is not a racist. >> all right, peter, thank you very much. hailey bum garner is the senior
8:28 am
press representative for the trump campaign. >> thanks for having me, tamron. >> corey lewandowski told nbc news that the report from bloomberg politics is not accurate. clear up then what happened on that call. did mr. trump tell surrogates that they should go after the judge even harder to keep up the attacks? >> look, the premise of the call was for mr. trump to thank his surrogates, supporters, leadership of the campaign for all their hard work now that we're concluding the primaries today and to talk about the shift to the general election. a lot of questions and points were brought up by people who dialed in and covered various topics. so it was a very productive call. but no, that was not the tone of the call or the premise of the call whatsoever. >> it may not have been the entire goal of the call, but did those things happen? did mr. trump tell the surrogates to keep up the attacks against the judge? >> no. i think that -- >> did that happen?
8:29 am
>> no. what i think is happening at this point is clarification because this has been so unfairly played out in the media. and the fact of the matter is -- >> so what did he say? what did he say? >> i'm getting to that point, i'm getting to that point. what was discussed was after many people brought up the subject is that, you know, the lawyers, the original lawyers who represented the original plaintiff, who's no longer the plaintiff, who had great reviews about trump university, mel weiss and bill la rock who have served time in jail for fixing cases and have direct ties to the clinton, have paid upwards of $600,000 for speeches and other things, talking about their political motivation and painting mr. trump as a racist, which is completely inaccurate. he has hired hispanics, african-americans, in many of his businesses for a very long time. so just i think that the goal is we want to clear up the liberal media hype that is unfairly
8:30 am
portraying the whole situation. >> but what you've just done and take three of this question is not answer it and then threw out accusations of people having criminal backgrounds so i'll ask you a direct quote from bloomberg politics. it says that donald trump went after members of his own team. he says are there any other stupid letters, referring to the letter telling surrogates to back down, that were sent to you folks? there's one of the reasons i want to have this call because you guys are getting stupid information from people that aren't so smart. he was referring to, according to the source, his own campaign team, members of the team. did that happen? >> well, i don't know who that source is, but i was on that call, you know, and i am certainly involved in the talking points. you know, being on the record and traveling with mr. trump. that was not the tone and those were not things that were said. again, the point was to clarify any confusion that any of the surrogates or the supporters may have, again, because of the hype and the unfair portrayal of this case in the media. you know, mr. trump has a right
8:31 am
to a fair judge and to an impartial judge. by the way this is being played out, you know, he's not -- he's not guaranteed that. so yes, part of the questions that came up from people calling in were clarifications on that and as clarifications were made as those points were brought up. >> so when jan brewer, according to the report, interrupted the team and said that she had received an e-mail asking surrogates to stop talking about the lawsuit, did that happen? >> i don't recall that happening and that's not an e-mail that i received. >> b you were on the call, right? >> yes, i was on the call. that's absolutely correct. >> so then according to the report, donald trump then said take that order and throw it the hell out. did that happen? >> i was on the call and no, that did not happen. that was not the intention of the call. the intention of the call was to clarify any miscommunication that has been played through the media about this case, which has been done so very unfairly. >> according to "the new york
8:32 am
times" today, donald trump's attorneys and donald trump back in 2008 and 2010 went after two other judges that mr. trump accused of being biased involving cases with trump university. one of the judges was an african-american man, the other was a white woman, and they turned, according to the report, angry accusation into an elbows out legal campaign to remove not one, but two new york judges who oversaw the lawsuit. so this by the count now is the third judge, one an african-american man, the other a white woman, now someone as donald trump said of mexican background but he's from indiana. you have hillary clinton saying at this point i imagine he'll only want judges that identify with him. does donald trump believe the only people who can be fair to him are white men of german heritage as his mother? >> no. and again, you know, that's media and he's being painted completely unfairly.
8:33 am
you know, mr. trump has employed, and i'm going to go back to this fact because this is absolutely ridiculous. he's employed women, he's employed african-americans, he's employed hispanics in his businesses, you know, for long periods of time. thousands of people. he is one of the biggest hearted individuals that you could meet. but, however, everyone through the courts has the right in this wonderful country that we live in to a fair trial and to an impartial judge. and so when you're going through the court systems and, you know, you are going through the legal channels, you have the right to do things legally and what makes sense for your legal strategy in order to make sure that you have those rights guaranteed to you. and so this is just being totally misconstrued. it's totally unfair and quite frankly it's not fair to the american viewers for this to be painted this way. >> so did donald trump have two other judges who oversaw the lawsuits, these cases involving trump university, one an
8:34 am
african-american man, the other a white woman, removed from these cases? is that an accurate report from "the new york times"? >> i'm not aware of those cases specifically, so i can't answer if that's accurate or inaccurate. what i can say is it should not even be pointed out if those judges were a woman, an african-american, whatever heritage, background, ethnicity, race. that isn't a relevant fact. >> do you believe it's fair -- well, if it's irrelevant, why did the candidate bring up the heritage of the judge from indiana? >> that was brought up because this judge is part of a group that is for pro illegal immigration. mr. trump has taken a very public stance in terms of wanting to build a wall and address our immigration problem. that's why ets brought up because heeflds the judge could be biassed in terms of this being an issue and that is 100% correct. >> one of the attorneys for donald trump, we've gotten an interview he did back on may 6th where he said we are not seeking
8:35 am
to recuse the judge. if you're not seeking to recuse the judge, is this just bluster and an opportunity for the candidate to bring up the judge's mexican heritage to stoke the fires of his base? if the goal is not to recuse, why then bring it up? >> well, i -- you know, we weren't the ones who originally brought this up in the press. this was brought up by the plaintiffs. as they continued to stir momentum, you know, this is where it ends up. so again, being unfairly painted through the liberal media. and so what we're attempting to do now is clarify and present the totality of the situation. >> well, to clarify, it was not the media who brought up the heritage of the judge, it was the candidate on multiple times that's been documented, but thank you for your time. i greatly appreciate it. >> it was the plaintiffs who brought it up but yes, you're welcome. thanks for your time. >> we'll have much more on the six primaries under way today as we come live from santa monica, california. also ahead, officials finally

if there's a breaking point, we'll find it. it's hard to stop a trane. really hard. we continue now with our special coverage on this primary day live from the santa monica pier. it's been a busy morning already. hillary clinton is on the brink of becoming the first woman elected as the presidential nominee of a major u.s. political party. let's bring in michigan senator debbie stabenow who endorsed clinton over a year ago. senator, thank you so much for your time. >> absolutely, tamron. >> even though the battle continues and we'll wait to see what happens in california, new jersey, other states tonight, the significance of hillary clinton being named the presumptive nominee, speak to what that means for you as a female senator and what you think that means for women around this country. >> absolutely. and let me first say to underscore what you just said,
8:45 am
we have six states voting today, all very, very important, including one where you are right now, and so we want to make sure everybody gets out and votes and that their voices are heard. so that's number one. number two, for me personally, knowing and working with hillary in many different ways for almost 30 years, when we came into the senator together in 2000, it was the first time there was enough women in the united states senate to have one woman on every committee in the senate. think about that. it was the first time that a woman's voice, experience, opinions, were reflected on a committee. so what hillary clinton is doing now hopefully, we've got to get the votes in today and go on, but i'm hopeful she's going to take that experience and certainy expertise. she's the best qualified person in the race, but she's going to take a perspective as a woman with her to the highest post in the united states, and this will be historic. and in fact when i think about
8:46 am
it, i -- it's very emotional for me because i think it's a wonderful opportunity for my daughter, for my granddaughter, for girls and boys across the country to really look and again see they can be anything they want to be. >> and again stressing that the vote continues. senator sanders has said that the people of california have the right to determine who is going to be president of the united states, so he's still in the fight. but going back to the tone of 2008 when the presumptive nominee was the first african-american, wanting to be the first african-american president and how this moment from hillary clinton is being marked, do you believe that it is, i guess, maybe just a more mild response because the race is still very passionate with bernie sanders supporters or do you believe that this title of being the first female to reach this point, it's easy to take for granted because people
8:47 am
believe that women have overcome so much? i'm trying to understand the difference in the reaction of 2008 with the accomplishment of an african-american versus now. >> i think we're in a process, tamron, first of all, people have got to vote today. we've had a very spirited race, as we saw in 2000. and bernie sanders has done a terrific job of mobilizing people whose voices need to be heard. and he'll come back to the senate hopefully when we're in the majority chairing a major committee and have a very important role to play in carrying out the things that he cares deeply about as a partner with the president. but we've got steps to go before this is done. i think as it builds that people will get more and more excited about it, and i think that we as women should embrace the fact that as half the population, actually more than half the voting population, you know, we
8:48 am
didn't get the right to vote until 1920. and this is a big deal. there's a reason to be excited about what we hope is coming and to be engaged in this and to know that we're a part of history. and what i love is that this is by far and away the most qualified and experienced and hard working and smartest person, not only running now, but maybe ever, certainly this is somebody who's imminently qualified. >> senator debbie stabenow, thank you for your time, we greatly appreciate it. coming up, the sanders campaign says they are going to convince superdelegates to change their minds and support senator sanders. so why our first read team says that will not change the outcome of this primary season. we'll be right back, live from california. ok team,
