me a fair share. >> and house speaker paul ryan. >> and good day everyone, i am andrea mitchell in new york. this unpredictable presidential prime season now includes a first. a first for women for america's politics. hillary clinton as the presumptive nominee heading into the most pivotal day of the fight. democratic voters are in new jersey and new mexico and dak a dakotas and all important is the crucial california. clint clinton's team is still fighting for every vote. >> this race is so tight in
9:02 am
california wharks a california, what are you saying to your supporters? many young voters are coming out. >> i feel good about our campaign and how well organized we are. i am urging everyone to come out to vote for california. >> joining me now is kristin welker. kristin, first to you, we were in california over the weekend, with clinton being challenged by sanders' heck le sanders' hecklers and a lot of support on both sides. secretary clinton and bill clinton has had over 34 events over the past week alone combined. senator sanders have pulled all of his resource to win california. the question is, why?
9:03 am
yesterday, nbc news pointed out in secretary clinton is the presumptive nominee. these results are not official. california becomes key because it has so many delegates and if secretary clinton can win in california, she can all take away senator sanders' remaargum for wanting to stay in this race. if she does have a majority of delegates tonight that she will declare victory. here in brooklyn she's going to speak and you and i are going to be there later on tonight. she's going to do a couple of things in that speech, she's going to talk about the importance of the unity and we have heard her over the past several days drawing sharp distinction of donald trump and calling her unqualified. we'll hear more of that i anticipate. he's going to talk about the historic nature at this moment. she did that with you yesterday.
9:04 am
she's going to expand that tonight of the fact that she's the first female clinching her party's nomination. a big night ahead but a lot of focus in california, still. >> andrea. >> karen, the whole arc of hillary clinton's career and you and i have been following for a decade now, she's the number of first but always the hard way. >> you know, that's really true. even in 2008, barack obama was able to get all the attention to the historic candidate. one thing people are over looking then is that no women ever before in history won a state primary. and yet somehow she again, when hillary clinton does these things, the pattern of her career is she sets out and stumbles and she picks herself backup and she grinds on. again, sometimes it is easy to over look how many barriers that she has pushed.
9:05 am
and you know, it left her in this position for the last 20 years in a row. she's been voted the most admiradmir admired woman in the world in the poll. yet, she starts this general election season with higher negatives than any democratic nominees ever had. >> and kristin, what are we wearing of the white house. everyone is awaiting for president obama jumping into this and reported yesterday, president obama did call bernie sanders on sunday and there was a lot of doom and gloom in the sanders camp after that call. he's giving them a heads up he's going to make this endorsement. some kind of announcement after she go to the top in pledged delegates alone depending on the outcome of today's polling? >> andrea, i did have an extent conversation with the administrative official essentially said they want to wait to see what happens in
9:06 am
california. i anticipate if secretary clinton does have a majority. if she declares victory tonight, president obama will endorse her in short order. i am told he's eager to get out of the campaign trail. what does it mean? he has been increasingly having conversations of his top aids of the roles he's going to play in 2016. he did have that conversation with bernie sanders, he said he's on the verge of endorsing secretary clinton. he's going to be pivotal to unify the party and getting his coalition on board and those younger voters supporting senator sanders. he's eager to take on donald trump. donald trump is the one that has not criticized him and threatens his legacy but who has offended him personally, he's eager to get out of the campaign trail and get to the game. >> briefly, karen, wondering why
9:07 am
this moment for women, politics aside, does not resonates more. new hampshire are not flocking to clinton, they don't seem to feel this moment of the way older women do. >> that's right, i think there is a real generational shift. a real general split here and i think it is going to be up to clinton and her campaign to sort of remind younger women what this moment means. it may be easier to do once bernie sanders is out of the race. >> thank you both so much. as hillary clinton begins to make history of becoming the first woman to be the presumptive nominee. donald trump is taking credit for breaking that glass ceil. >> i was the one that broke the ceil. my relationship, i think it is going to end up being very good with women.
9:08 am
>> joining me now is another woman who spoke of a lot of glass ceiling, supporter of secretary clinton. >> reporter: hello. >> with that said, your reactions to this moment sooner than they wanted? they wanted to all happen tonight. they were not pleased of the associated press and nbc following suit as we counted the super delegates. do you have concerns for one thing that this may make a difficult to heal the wounds with bernie sanders because of his objections to the super delegate counts. >> reporter: i don't think so, andrea, this is a historic moment and a milestone reached by secretary clinton to be the first female nominee. the national party is a big deal. she's earned the vote and the delegates as it is an exciting moment for theically and the

world. this is something that every women and gi woman and girl can look up to. >> you got two little boys, did they react to these things or they are used to the fact that mommy is the senator so what's the big deal, how can a woman be on the national ticket? >> reporter: a lot of kids are following this. i can tell you they do not like donald trump and they think hillary clinton is amazing. we are all supporters of hillary clinton. it is an amazing moment of our nation. we'll continue to do so running into the general direction. >> new eastern spancy pelosi eny clinton today. wondering why she waited. this is after hillary clinton went over the top. >> reporter: everybody makes their own decisions when to endorse their candidate. i know she's the best candidate

running for president today and the most experience and i am really excited of this moment in history, she's done the hard work of earning every vote and winning this primary and such a strong way across the country, it is an important moment for all of us. >> you know elizabeth warren well and you obvious lily hilla clinton well. can you imagine of the ticket of warren? >> i know hillary will make the right choice regardless. >> i want to ask you about donald trump criticism of the judge in his civil case because from all accounts, including trump's own attorney at the time, this judge has ruled on his favor on a number of motions including postponing the hearing after the election. aside from the refusing of the request for summary judgment,
9:11 am
one wonders what is donald trump trying to do in making this ethnic argument against this hispanic-american judge. >> reporter: his comments are racist and ugly. it is not something that this country believes in. his comments are wrong and it is the reason why hillary clinton should be president. >> i want to ask you about you have been spear headed on the service committee which is you're outrage of the assault case and the letter you have written to the president campaign of the way the pentagon is handling. >> reporter: the ap released a story saying that the defense misled congress during this debate and of the number of rate prosecutions and the nature of those prosecutions. this is the same, andrea, military does not want to have the over site and the accountability that it needs. we have 20,000 cases of rapes and sexually assaults and

of racist. it is hard to make those two things coexist. i get christie's experience with donald trump. if you look at the broader context of how trump has played with race ethnicity in this campaign, it is more difficult, i think to simply say flat out that he's not engaging in any of these stuff and anyone who says that he's over reacted. >> lyndsey gram ham on the hill today of the interview that halie jackson did with him. >> i think it is unfairly. if he believes the judge cannot hear his case make a moeks unti under the rule of law. if any lawyer challenged that the judge cannot hear the case because his parents were borned in mexico, they would risk their

reputation and sanctions. >> a pretty tough language from lyndsey graham, susan paige. >> this is a republican party in a panic today. they have a nominee, he's got a majority of the convention delegates. some of them are saying that he -- this is a big concern for republicans whether their nominee is able to pivot and address a larger election. what is he going to mean for candidates down the values. senators and the swing states up for election, where they stand when it comes to donald trump? >> on the democratic side, bob is now rejoining us, we apologize for the issue there. what does bernie sanders do, win or lose, you got the president
9:51 am
of the united states telling him he's about to endorse secretary clinton. >> everybody has to give him space and time. secretary clinton understands this. she went through this in 2008. he will make some calls to the super delegates. i don't think that'll yield very much. in the next week or two, maybe after the dc primary, he will make a statement and he will get out of the race. it is also true that secretary clinton would have prefer to lockdown the nomination with the voting today. she did it because of super delegates. another reason to get rid of the super delegates. one of the things i think that she and bernie sanders can agree on the convention. >> in fact, clinton, is a real concern is there not chris cillizza of the possibility that people staying home and not vote and she's got it locked up.
9:52 am
the last thing that they themselves want it. >> the thing that you want right before an election is the stakes could not be higher, your vote is super important and what you don't want is well, it is already over with. the sanders people have said this is turning out for us. you can argue for the sanders' team is the one last chance to show the establishment or the media, who ever to show the establishment that they are wrong. yes, i think it is a motivational tool to say ta california is going to put them over the top and coming out anyway and support hillary. >> susan punjaige, there is something contradictory of the system is rigged. i am going to try to flip them and that's my pathway to take the nomination. >> i am convincing, too. there is been no signs of super delegates are interested in flipping. both parties have their nominees. the question is, how do the
9:53 am
parties get united? the republicans are having real problems today. that's a lesson to bernie sanders and an interview with you, jeff, we were taking a slightly different tone than he did in the past. barack obama -- if he comes out tomorrow and endorses hillary clinton and says his race is over, maybe that's the off ramp that bernie sanders needs to get booi behind her to address the future and politics and this general election. >> bob, he comes out of this race win or lose with a huge amount of leverage of the money he raised and fund raising and the way he's been able to generate young enthusists. >> there are a million new registrations in california and many of them are people who are very young. i think that bernie sanders will be a major force. the first place he will be a major force is in the fall.
9:54 am
he has a real job to do to bring new people. that's why you see the polls are relatively close right now. they will just as the clinton people moving to obama. she did her job and he will have to do her job. >> in the past, it is her job to persuade supporters and not that he has the obligation or responsibility to win. >> look, i have been here with jimmy carter, the primaries are still going on. you are out there and you are making your case and you are making your argument, i think jeff weaver testimompered himse this morning. it is different afterwards and a different situation in the 1980 when jimmy carter did not debate or campaign. there is plenty of room here to put the clinton people and the
9:55 am
sanders people together in terms of platform positions and reforming the nominee process. >> thank you to all of you. >> and much more ahead on this big primary election day as voters are heading to the polls in six states. you are watching "andrea mitchell reports" on msnbc. t bu, or buildg the be houses in town or becoming the next highly-unlikely dotcom superstar. and us, we'll be right there th you, helping with the questions you need answered to get your brand new business started. we're legalzoom and we've already partnered with over a million new business owners to do just that. check us out today to see how you can become one of them. legalzoom. legal help is here.
