"first look" starts right now. well, hello. good morning to you. thanks for joining us today. i'm betty nguyen. all eyes are on bernie sanders as the independent senator is urged to unite behind hillary clinton following her resounding primary win. sanders returned to his hometown of burlington, vermont, where he met with senior staff before heading to washington, d.c. today. he is scheduled to meet with the president later this morning. here's part of what mr. obama said regarding the 2016 race in an interview with jimmy fallon which is set to air tonight. >> it was a healthy thing for the democratic party to have a contested primary. i thought that bernie sanders brought enormous energy and new ideas and he pushed the party and challenged them. i thought it made hillary a better candidate. my hope is that over the next couple of weeks we're able to

pull things together and what happens during primaries you get a little ouchy. i think we'll have a great convention and do well. >> sanders will meet with senate leader harry reid before holding a washington, d.c., rally ahead of next week's final democratic primary. while democratic leaders are urging sanders to get in line behind clinton, vice president joe biden asked for patience. >> oh, be a little graceful. let the man have his own pace. >> california senator dianne feinstein told nbc some time is needed before the party can unite before the general. reuters is now reporting that liberal fire brand elizabeth warren is eyeing a clinton endorsement some time next week. the news outlet said that warren has not ruled out being her running mate that comes amid reports that senator reid has been lobbying for warren as clinton's vp.

meanwhile, hillary clinton spoke to the country's leading papers and reaffirmed her fight against trump saying she would be using trump's words against him. she is calling his comments against judge gonzalo curiel an outrageous racist attack and accusing him of behaving like a demagogue. here is what she told lester holt last night. >> he can run a campaign of insults. i'm running a campaign of issues that are going to produce results for the american people. i'm going to talk about why he's unqualified to be president based on his own words and his deeds and i'm going to continue to make the case he is temperamentally unfit to be commander in chief. >> meanwhile, despite his toned down teleprompter speech, he is back to himself. i would have had millions of votes more than crooked hillary clinton except for the fact that i had 16 opponents. she had one. nbc news reports trump has now requested a meeting with top officials at the koch backed freedom partners group. he is expected to hold a

fund-raising event today. trump told bloomberg news he does not take in the $1 billion he said he'd need in the general election saying he would instead rely on free earned media. he told bloomberg, quote, i just don't think i need nearly as much money as other people need because i get so much publicity. i get so many invitations to be on television, i get so many interviews if i want them. now that comes as politico reports that trump insiders are becoming increasingly worried that they would only rake in a fraction of trump's original billion dollars fund-raising goal. an ambush style attack in tel aviv left four dead after two palestinian brothers opened fire in one of the city's busiest districts. gunfire erupted at the popular open air shopping mall. it is across the street from military headquarters. israel's version of the pentagon. it sent patrons of the upscale market just scrambling for cover, knocking over chairs and tables, rushing to escape. the two men have been captured. one was shot. the second was arrested

according to an israeli police spokesman. while there's no immediate claim of responsibility, prime minister benjamin netanyahu gave this brief statement to the press following the attack. >> this is a savage crime, a murder. terrorism in the heart of tel aviv. we'll take the necessary steps to attack the attackers and to defend those who need to be defended. >> the u.s. condemned the quote horrific terrorist attack and is in contact with israeli authorities. now to a shocking attempted abduction caught on camera at a florida dollar store. it shows a mother springing into action after a man begins dragging her 13-year-old daughter away. meanwhile, the off duty sheriff's deputy who helped nab the suspect is speaking out. nbc's kerry sanders has that story. >> reporter: parents live in fear of what you're watching. a stranger grabs a 13-year-old girl and tries to drag her out of the dollar store, all caught on store security cameras. >> attempted kidnapping just

occurred. >> reporter: the teenager's mom heroically fights to get her daughter free. he finally gives up and runs out of the store. >> all units to dollar general. >> reporter: the suspect 30-year-old craig leslie bonello is charged with kidnapping and child abuse. he was captured because just moments after he ran out the front door of the dollar store here, in walked off duty deputy john behnen. >> started yelling at me, john, he just tried to kidnap a girl. >> reporter: a bystander shot this video on her cell phone and by then deputy behnen had pulled his patrol car around back, blocking the suspect's car. >> i started to bang on the glass with my firearm. >> reporter: attempted kidnappings by someone the family does not know is very rare, less than 1% of abductions are by a complete stranger. about 66% of the victims of

those nonfamily child abductions are girls. >> hadn't for that mother's action we could be dealing with a tragedy right now. >> reporter: the suspect's lawyer says his client is a veteran with psychological problems. kerry sanders, nbc news, florida. well, hundreds of fans lined up outside the kfc young center, they're hoping to grab a ticket to the funeral service of muhammad ali. bill clinton will deliver the eulogy before 15,000 at the ceremony. sarah, what is the atmosphere like today? >> reporter: well, it's very reverent. muhammad ali lived his life in the spotlight and both his funeral and a muslim funeral prayer service will be opened to the public. inside or outside the ring,

muhammad ali captured the attention of millions around the globe. fans and admirers stood in long lines to get tickets to his memorial service. >> i think it's a real testament to the power of muhammad ali and his message and all this he stood for so many people. >> reporter: this morning's muslim funeral prayer service held at the site of ali's last fight in louisville. and tomorrow a slow procession will drive through neighborhoods and streets that played key roles in his lie. the funeral itself is being held inside the 22,000 seat basketball arena. pallbearers include lennox lewis, and actor will smith who portrayed the boxing great in the hollywood film "ali." former president bill clinton, friend billy crystal and bryant gumbel will deliver eulogies. >> what you see are muhammad's wishes. he had a hand in all of the planning. >> reporter: heads of state and an array of clergy and hollywood stars will be present. but ali placed an emphasis on his service being accessible to

the every man. in addition to the public tickets the service will also be streamed online. muhammad ali making sure his fans can hear his final message. and ali will be buried in town here at cahill cemetery. it will be modest and in keeping with muslim tradition. >> sarah, thank you. tennis star maria sharapova has been suspended for two years for testing positive for meldonium. she was not aware it was banned at the start of 2016. meldonium which is used for heart conditions is believed to have side effects of increasing the energy levels. her suspension is back dated to january 26th when she last played in australian open. she admitted to taking the drug in 2016. the panel that handed down her suspension said she took the substance, quote, for the

purpose of enhancing her performance. she was formerly ranked number one in the world. she was suspended back in march and she plans to appeal what she calls quote an unfairly harsh punishment, knowing she didn't intentionally violate the doping rules. it keeps her out of the rio olympics. the so-called tender foot fire has burned more than 600 acres in yarnell and over 300 residents are under an evacuation order. now, the cause of the fire, that's still under investigation, but you may remember back in 2013 a massive wildfire in the same town killed 19 firefighters with the granite mountain hot shots. let's get down to business with cnbc's landon dowdy. good morning. >> hi, there, good morning to you. as many as 32 million twitter accounts may have been hacked. hacked info said it received

overnight at least 20 people are dead in aleppo, syria, according to the monitoring group. new video not yet confirmed by nbc news allegedly shows syrian government forces dropping barrel bombs on the city. the watchdog group says at least one target was a medical facility. unicef's middle east branch said three hospitals were bombed in the space of three hours. we'll continue to follow this story. a four-lane sinkhole opened up near the ottawa mall. look at this, swallowing a van. the crater formed just blocks from the canadian parliament and caused a gas leak. no injuries are reported. officials are trying to determine if nearby construction on a tunnel is the cause. and police in los angeles were on a high speed chase. they believed he was armed as he raced down freeways. at a dead end he ditched the

confederate flag from the stained dallas windows. officials called it an image of hatred and racial supremacy. as donald trump railed against the judge presiding over his trump university case, he took aim for paying hillary clinton for a speech. well, it turns out the lawyer on the case has clinton connections of his own. politico reports federal filings showed trump's lawyer daniel petrocelli contributed $2,700 to her campaign after trump hired him to argue his university case. trump tells "time" magazine he's disappoint and surprised by the amount of criticism he's received from the leaders. they have to say what they have to say. meanwhile, hillary clinton will soon deliver a major speech hammering trump over economic issues. it will mimic her blistering attacks against trump in last week's foreign policy speech. she told the journal, quote,

while he may have some catchy sound bites his statements on the economy are dangerously incoherent. it is not hard to see how a trump presidency could lead to the serious global economic crisis. and that is your morning dish of "scrambled politics." now to washington. i am joined by roll call columnist jonathan allen. good morning. >> good morning, betty. >> let's talk bernie sanders. he called members of his senior staff and long-time aides to a meeting at his house last night. so is this the beginning of the end for his campaign, despite what he says about fighting all the way to the convention? >> it's closer to the end of the end. for a long time the writing has been on the wall. that he wasn't going to have the delegates to win the nomination, that he wasn't able to flip the number of super delegates he would need. i'm not sure he knows what to do with the political revolution. i think his instinct is to fight in politics. i they in the positive -- i say that in the positive sense of the word. he doesn't want to give up the struggle. he's trying to figure out the best way to harness the energy and the enthusiasm he's brought

to the democratic primary. >> well, that really leads to today. and i want to ask, does the sanders hope to broker some kind of a deal with the president when he meets with the president today? and maybe merge some of those ideas into the democratic platform? >> a meeting with the president is certainly a good out for bernie sanders. if president obama and i expect this will happen urges him to get behind the democratic nominee, hillary clinton, urges him to turn that movement into something that pressures the government from the outside like obama tried to do with the obama for america group, that gives bernie sanders an easy way to step away and say that he's -- you know, sought counsel from the president and has a new plan. >> all right. i want to shift gears to donald trump. is support for him shrinking on capitol hill? i mean, despite his attempt to walk back those comments about the judge overseeing his trump university case? >> there's great anxiety about donald trump on capitol hill no question about it. you saw senator kirk yesterday
