house and the president's meeting with bernie sanders. meanwhile, the gop tries to get a handle on donald trump as the republicans says he's quote disappointed and surprised by party leaders who push back against his -- about his comments about gonzalo curiel. and four people are dead after four palestinian gunmen jump out of their seats in a crowded restaurant and start shooting. 5:30 here on the east coast, 2:30 out west. this is "way too early." hey, there. good morning. it's thursday, june 9th. i'm alex witt. with pressure to drop out of the democratic race growing, bernie sanders will head to washington,
2:31 am
d.c. to meet with president obama and harry reid. the president will use the oval office meeting to quote, delicately nudge sanders towards a full embrace of hillary clinton's candidacy and a unified party. president obama travelled to new york yesterday for an appearance on "the tonight show" where he discussed the democratic primary. >> it was a healthy thing for the democratic party to have a contested primary. i thought that bernie sanders brought enormous energy and new ideas and he pushed the party and challenged them. i thought it made hillary a better candidate. my hope is that over the next couple of weeks we're able to pull things together and what happens during primaries you get a little ouchy. >> is bernie going to endorse hillary? >> well, i'm sure they're going to have a conversation. >> is he ever going to drop out? [ laughter ] or just stay in? >> i'm going to be talking to him tomorrow. he's coming to the white house. and the main role i'm going to be playing in this process is to
2:32 am
remind the american people that this is a serious job. you know, this is not reality tv. >> sanders' sole supporter in the senate said this is the moment that we need to start to bring parts of the party together so they can go into the convention with locked arms and go out of the convention unified into the general election. other democrats on capitol hill also weighed in while vice president joe biden urged patience. >> i believe the democratic party will shortly be unified for two reasons. one, we know what would happen if there were a president trump and two, we know the good things that would happen getting middle class incomes moving, bringing america together if there's president clinton. >> i think bernie wants to unify. i think his discussion with the president tomorrow is going to be about unification. bernie will do the right thing. we all agree that trump is the one to beat. you know, hillary is very
2:33 am
capable person and a very capable candidate. >> mr. vice president, can i ask you is it time for bernie sanders to drop out of the race? >> oh, be a little graceful. let the man have his own pace. >> do you think hillary clinton and him will come together -- >> a great president. >> despite declaring victory, hillary clinton is not calling for sanders to end his campaign. in her first interview of the campaign with "the washington post," clinton quote expressed cautious hope that rival bernie sanders whose candidacy produced an unexpectedly hard fought nominating contest would soon rally behind her. >> we are reaching out through our campaigns to his campaign. and i have made it clear that i'm going to do everything i can to make it possible for him to be a good partner in our joint efforts to, you know, pursue these goals i mentioned and to defeat donald trump. >> in the same interview with
2:34 am
"nbc nightly news's" lester holt she said she won't go insult for insult against trump. >> will you respond insult to insult? >> no, absolutely not. he can run a campaign of insults. i'm running a campaign of issues that are going to produce results for the american people. i'm going to talk about why he's unqualified to be president, based on his own words and his deeds and i'm going to continue to make the case he is temperamentally unfit to be commander in chief. >> democratic senator elizabeth warren who stayed neutral throughout the presidential primaries will be making her choice known in the coming days. reuters reports that senator warren will soon endorse hillary clinton and while not currently interested in serving as her running mate has not ruled it out. then that's senator tim kaine of virginia who endorsed clinton over a year ago who tells c-span in a new interview he doubts he will be the choice as clinton said she's still looking.
2:35 am
>> i think i can help her win and i think i can help her win most by helping her win virginia. that's what i'm doing already. so she's got a lot of directions that she can go and she's going -- look, she's going to choose a person who is the best suited to help her govern and to help her win. and i was vetted for this spot back in '08. i love being mentioned, but my gut was never saying i think it will be me. i don't feel that differently now. >> i'm looking at the most qualified people and that includes women of course because i want to be sure that whoever i pick could be president immediately. if something were to happen. that's the most important qualification. there are a lot of people on the democratic party who bring so many great assets to the table. i'm going to really begin to pay attention to that now that we have wrapped up the primary process. donald trump is speaking out about the stern rebuke he received from top republicans in washington for what many called
2:36 am
racist criticism of federal judge. at an interview at trump tower the presumptive nominee told "time" magazine he was disappointed and surprised by the leaders' reactions. asked if they were being disloyal, he said i had won more votes than anyone in the history of the party so i was surprised that they said that. they have to say what they have to say, i'm a big boy. house speaker paul ryan reiterated his support for trump yesterday at the house gop conference meeting, expressing confidence that trump would settle down and trump's biggest supporter jeff sessions told hallie jackson that trump felt he had to defend trump university. >> well, it would have been nice if it were -- that had not been said. for sure. but he's explained that and he's really feels strongly about this lawsuit, you know? he feels like it's an unjust proceeding and he should prevail and now he said he'll let his lawyer handle it. he's not doing to be continuing to comment on it. i think that's probably a good
2:37 am
decision. >> but other republicans were not as forgetting including scott walker who is one of several republicans withholding their support until trump owns up and apologizes for his remarks. >> the sad fact is it's just sad in america that we have such poor choices right now. he's not yet the nominee. officially that won't happen until the middle of july. for me that's kind of the time frame. in particular, i want to make sure that he renounces what he says at least with regards to this judge. >> the fact is that donald trump still needs to apologize for his comments and saying that his comments were misconstrued is not an apology. i would like to hear him apologize to the judge, apologize to the american people. admit for once that he made a mistake and then move on and start focusing like a laser on the economic issues.
2:38 am
>> it's not a comfortable position to be in, to not back the party's nominee. and i'm not a fan of hillary clinton. i want to see a republican in the white house. but i can tell you given the positions that mr. trump has taken so far, he's not going to get there. to talk about a ban on muslims, to talk about revisiting the liable laws to more easily go after journalists, and then this new rant against this judge, an american born in indiana, calling him a mexican. you can't take positions like that. and win, you know, the white house. >> and senate judiciary committee chairman chuck grassley is walking back his statement in which he compared trump's attack on judge curiel to comments made by sonia sotomayor years before she became the high court's first hispanic judge. quote, i think you don't have any more trouble with what trump
2:39 am
said that when sotomayor said a wise latino woman would reach a better conclusion than a white male. i don't hear criticism of that sort of comment by a justice of supreme court. her wise latino remark was raised multiple times during his hearings. he later clarified to hallie jackson. >> you just can't equate the two and i wasn't meant to equate the two. i think i said several times that i wouldn't say what trump said. i disagree with what he said. well, four people are dead and several others seriously injured in israel after two palestinian gunmen opened fire at a popular market. the two men are now in police custody following the attack in tel aviv yesterday. which took place outside israel's ministry of defense. officials say the two are from the west bank. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is vowing a swift response. >> we're going to take the necessary steps to attack the attackers and to defend those
2:40 am
who need to be defended. >> over the last several months, palestinians attacked have killed 31 israelis and two americans and about 200 palestinians have been killed. most identified as attackers by israel. and hillary clinton issued a statement on this latest violence saying, i stand in solidarity with the israeli people in the face of these ongoing threats and in unwavering support of the country's right to defend itself. israel's security must remain non-negotiable. later today, house speaker paul ryan is expected to lay out the national security strategy which it will focus on immigration and the border and as "the washington post" puts it it's meant to soften trump's edges. he's expected to propose the use of more technology and high fencing along southern border as opposed to trump's signature policy proposal, building a wall. and while trump has called nato obsolete, he urges solidifying the alliance, while urging them to spend more on defense. and a dramatic scene caught
