it kristin welker, in for andrea here at the white house a beautiful thursday. we are all eagerly waiting for details for the meeting happening behind me between bernie sanders and president obama. we are keeping our eye out for sn senate ersor sanders. kat katy tur and peter is with us. chris, i want to start with you, what are you anticipating coming out of this critical meeting. >> that's a good question and nobody knows. they want into this with one area of glecomplete agreement. they want to see donald trump defeated. it starts with that and the idea of bernie sanders settles along, i am going to do everything i can to defeat donald trump. having said that on the other side, there are things he wants.
9:01 am
he wants democratic party standing for the progressive ideas that he stands for. when we arrived in burlington, don't expect him to give a lot of details about it. he's someone when he has meetings with the president, it is a private conversation. we already know from the white house and you're reporting, kristin, that we are not expecting to hear from the president today. i think if we can get a sense of his mood how he feels that meeting went if he feels the positive about it. the last 24 hours of multiple conversations with senior staffs they have been appreciative of the kind of comments they heard from the president and the vice president. they feel that they've handled this process very well. >> i know it is a late night of you traveling with senator
9:02 am
sanders. >> you go out and you are in san francisco and ten thousand plus people are screaming your name even after it is clear that hillary clinton is the presumptive nominee. thousands come out the next night and they're screaming for you and they want you to stay in the race. you have that but then you have this push even though the president invites -- hillary clinton has not asked him to leave the race. there are organizations and congressional members who supported the bernie sanders who have started to make those kinds of comments. last night, i would say he was at the very least subdue and even a little prickly in handling the press last night and i am told, i was able to learn about a meeting he called later in the evening for a fairly late night meeting with members of his senior staffs coming over to his house to talk. they said he was home and he wanted to get home to sleep in his own bed. he was feeling a lot better and i spoke to somebody who was on the plane with him and a member
9:03 am
of his staff who said he was relaxed. we saw him going and picking up coffee. i think he's feeling good and we saw him patting the president's back as we saw the two of them walking. >> the optimistcs is so importa. peter, we are reunited. >> you obviously, cover this extensively. i want to play a little bit of what he said to jimmy fallon to get your reaction on the other side. >> my hope over the next couple of weeks, we are able to pull things together and what happens during primaries, you get a little ouchie, everybody does. everybody recognizing that this is not about any individuals but it is about the country and the correction that we are taking. >> talk about the tone and the fine line that the president had to walk today, it is an extensive meeting. >> lets talk about one thing, the fact that they're still
9:04 am
meeting right now, that's significant. as they talk about the stake of the race and the stake of the future and the party of 2016. as you see that picture we are playing walking side by side in the colony, consider the sigh of relief and democratic circles around this country right now. throughout the campaign, donald trump has been celebrated at the wild card and really right now, the biggest wild card is bernie sanders and what happens to those millions of people supported him. the president will softly nudge him on this topic but in effect, the math is the math here and trying to do a lot of listening. this is sort of like a coffee talk with bernie sanders today, right? a movement focus on issues and trades and he will care and minimum wage and a big priority
9:05 am
to the senator. >> of tens of thousands coming out to his rally and katy you have seen phenomenon of supporters coming out. he's trying to accomplish the same and stumbling a bit. >> tell me a little bit of that and how jitter ri of the trump campaign that they're not meeting with the funds rai rais. >> reporter: we are outside right now. he's supposed to meet with 70 donors. chris christie has walked in and some of donald trump's staffs. he's not here. we know there are meetings at trump's tower. that remains to be seen as to how the meeting is going go. a lot of these folks are going
9:06 am
to this meeting are folks that refused to go. he tells me the problem is right now and a number of people don't want to be associated with donald trump specifically over the judge curiel's comment. if their names are associat associated -- accused of being racist or proposing to ban all muslims, that could be bad for business on top of being mora y morally representible. the campaign has been bare bones and proud of it. he's the presumptive nominee and they believe that'll end up working for them throughout this campaign through the general election in a way that has not worked for other candidates. remember donald trump himself,
9:07 am
he does not need to reign in billions of dollars because he can rely all the times he gets on tv and the tweets and social media presence he has online. >> of course, a much different ball game in the general election. katy tur, thank you for that. i want to talk about someone else, we are watching closely. senator elizabeth warren expected to endorse secretary clinton soon. why does she get under his skin pretty much. she's been an effective attack so far. >> we have been provided that says he's a loud, thin skin, nasty -- what's the word, fraud? she's one of the few people, we saw what twitter did to some other candidates who tried to engage donald trump for the course of campaign. she has not backed away, she's gotten into multiple feuds.
9:08 am
elizabeth warren is significant know, she's skewed of the progressive wing and closer to the bernie wing right now. there is a lot of people feeling that there is no chance she and hillary clinton can find common grounds. harry reid, why did you put two women on the ticket. >> elizabeth warren is the vp pick, why would show be to effective of senator bernie sanders. >> here name by far is mentioned if she's named as vp, she will bring out those supporters. people who are skeptical of clinton would feel differently if it is warren.
9:09 am
>> that's right, chris general sing a jansing. thank you very much. congressman, thank you very much for joining with me this afternoon. >> good to be with you kristin. >> this is a high stake meeting we are watching and we are waiting to see how it is. what are you anticipating will come from this meeting? >> well, i don't know if there will be something specifics senator sanders will say. i don't think there is any doubt that he has made very clear that trump is not acceptable alternative for the president of the united states and there is no doubt in my mind he will be working during the general election to support heroillary clinton and to assure donald trump does not become the presence us baecause he does no share the values and experience and the leadership need and
9:10 am
want. >> tdo you anticipate that's going to happen in the near future, will he wait after the dc primary next week, what do you expect on that? >> well, i don't know, and i would hope sooner rather than later. again, i would reiterate there is no doubt in my mind that senator sanders will be supportisuppor supporting secretary clinton. they share so many objectives in common. there is been a great deal made of the differences between bernie sanders and hillary clinton. the fact the matter is, they have much, much more in coming and it is really in many respects degree not character that they're talking about. how far you go and how fast you go, and clinton has said correctly. she's a progressive but she's a progressive that want to get things done.
9:11 am
therefore, she has to talk in the realm of what can be done and let the american people know of what the objectives she thinks is doable. bernie sanders is powerful in expressing the provision of the objectives they want to see. therefore, i think he's going to be supportive of her for not only electing her but making sure that trump does not become president. >> one of the big question marks that hangs over this meeting that senator sanders would likely come with demand and something he would like to see, should the president or secretary clinton adopts his policy position on the platform and things like health care and minimum wage and trade. >> i am not sure if there is a real difference of minimum wage,
9:12 am
we are strongly raising the minimum wage. we, republicans, won't bring it on the floor. >> she backs $12 and he backs $15. >> should that be on the platform? >> again, we are talking and many jurisdictions is going in the $15. the minimum wage today if 68 minimum wage would be paid is $10.70 and $12 or $15 is not unachievable or undesirable. they'll be talking about that. again, i want to emphasize that's a degree and not a character. we believe the minimum wage ought to be increase and health care, both hillary clinton and bernie sanders believe that all americans ought to have access to affordable quality and health care. it is a question of how you do that. again, it is not the character of the issues, it is the differences and how fast and how far and how affordable you could move and no discussions on them.
9:13 am
there will be discussions on the platform committee. i am very pleased of leadership. he's going to be able of bringing cbring consensus in the committee >> one more on dnc chair. you know senator sanders has had some tensions with her and potentially calling for her ouster. should someone else have that position, i know your name has been floated, would you consider that? >> no. i am both a lead, leader pelosi we appreciate the excellent job as debbie sholts has done. we think she's been an excellent
9:14 am
chairman and any time you have a chair of the dnc during a presidential election, that can become controversial. i understand senator sanders' concerns. i fully expect and support debb debbie sholts. >> thank you very much for your insights. we really appreciate it. >> thank you. >> coming up, turning on trump, will republicans join the revolt against their pick for president. we'll continue to keep a close watch right here at the white house at any moment, we expect bernie sanders to depart his oval office meeting where he could make a statement. we are tracking it all for you, folks, stay with us right here on "andrea mitchell reports" only on msnbc. aid humira is for adults like me who have tried other medications but still experience the symptoms of moderate to severe crohn's disease. and that in clinical studies, the majority of patients on humira saw significant symptom relief. and many achieved remission.

>> with the consistency he's been saying for a while now. he would do everything he could to defeat donald trump. >> going into this meeting and seeing unite barack obama and bernie sanders and in terms of this campaign, is that honestly, they're blood boil when they hear some statements that was made by donald trump. they both really, really want to see him taken down. i am sure apart of this was how do we do that and how do we make sure that donald trump does not have a chance to become president. >> that is something that could invigorates his supporters. >> most definitely. particular though who are d democrats and not necessarily the independence. specifically, the ones who tried democrats. there were hundreds of people standing out waiting for bernie sanders who are in this obama
9:49 am
administration watching. i think he's going to invigorate it. i believe that'll be powerful. >> that's when the unification will be -- >> can i say it quickly >> okay, we'll continue this conversation with chris jansing and april. >> i want to go to andrea, your take away this afternoon. >> well, i am over at a foreign policy discussion with the speaker and members of the house majority and had a chance to talk to him exclusively on the side and ask him about the fact that hillary clinton has said that donald trump does not have a temperament and he's not fit to be commandeering chief and this is paul ryan's response. >> look, i think his stage
9:50 am
presence is something that's different than what i would do. my personal interactions i find that he's very temperament. you said his comment was textbook reference. >> there was no justifying those comments and i was clear about that. and not just republicans -- this is a long campaign of a long way to go and he has way to go to give us a campaign that we can be proud of. >> interesting thing is that the speaker clearly not comfortable with some of the positions of the muslims ban and what was said of judge curiel. he said there is no way to have a different nominee. this is going to be the nomine
9:51 am
and the conversation i had with six chairman and house chairman of republicans committee of the foreign affairs committee and other committees. they are counting on the fact that donald trump will have good advisors because they are unrolling today of the republican platform on national security and homeland security that in many ways at odds of what donald trump has said when he talked about having unc clnu weapons to north and south korea. none of these things have in zinced of what the republicans have rolling out today. >> andrea given all your conversations today, your interview with paul ryan, did you gate sense of how nervous and jittery they are about donald trump given the fact that you have all of these republicans who are not only rescinding their endorsements of
9:52 am
him but saying they're not ready to throw their vacu back behind. how much concern in the party. >> there is a distinction between the senate and the house. the fact that paul ryan is the top elected republican and someone in the line of succession and the top republican leader right now aside from the presumptive nominee is going along with trump as the reluctantly as he is, the house, majority of them are behind trump. nervous in yes, but behind trump. i don't think that they think there is any way to change the rules and not have him be the nominee since he has the
9:53 am
majority delegatedelegates. that would require a rule change and others just don't think it is possible at this point. >> all right, andrea mitchell, i know you cannot be here but, of course, you are getting the big interviews today. we appreciate you bringing us the headlines on that. >> thank you, andrea. >> it is a tremendous day here at the white house. >> joining me now and wall street journal, abby phillips, and thanks to both of you, ladies for being here. caroline, i want to start with you, you were just there with the gaggle with senator sanders. he did not take questions. what was your big take away? >> he's on board in terms of unifying the party that whatever conversation he had with the president and left the conversation and said everything the white house would have wanted him to say going into this. >> you have covered the president extensively. talk about the mood heading into
9:54 am
this meeting and how the president was approaching it? >> we gathered in the rose garden to watch senator sanders and the president walking. they were talking and laughing and the president was very anima animated. i think going into this, i think the white house officials will tell you that the president has a tremendous amount of respect for senator sanders for this campaign building of a movement. i think he just wanted to get him to harness that movement and help clinton and shows that he respects of what he has accomplished and i think it sounds like he did that. >> we are learning senator sanders just walked in with his meeting with harry reid. abby, i want to turn to you now, what were their expectations for the day and what do you think their reactions is going to be for this meeting? >> i think the clinton campaign and democrats that i have talked
9:55 am
to expect us to be the beginning of a long process potentially of bernie sanders moving on his own terms towards reconciliation. i think they expect president obama to be someone who could help bridge this gap as will harry reid and his meeting this afternoon and other prominent democrats. there is no one within the clinton campaign there is sort of recognition that no one understands us better than hillary clinton. he liv she actually lives through this and had the willingness to give bernie sanders any amount of time that bernie needs. i think the clinton campaign is willing to give bernie that time. >> i want to talk about another
9:56 am
senator today, senator elizabeth warren who's going to endorse clinton. that revived all this buzz of a possibility of a vp pick. abby, what are your sources telling you about that and does the clinton campaign thinks that comes with some risks? >> they are willing to consider someone like elizabeth warren a progressive and they're willing to consider another woman. they made it very clear and they don't view a woman is off the table. hillary clinton has said that herself. others that i have talked to and have mentioned that warren could be a really good option, not just because she's progressive but the problem of her seat in massachusetts being able to replace her is not -- they're willing to allow a temporary inclusion and potentially
9:57 am
elizabeth warren is a candidate who not only could unite the left but have a lot of appeals m among the working class as well. she's really not that well known. she's well known among democrats but not that well known among the vast majority of americans and that's a hurdle that'll need to over come. >> he has a nickname for her, pocahontas. what do you expect we are going to hear tonight. >> before that, you will see a series of endorsements and you will get an endorsement from the president soon enough and that'll follow the vice president. i don't know if he's going to say that particularly tonight. it is all kind of coalescing and moving. you have heard from the vice president saying that secretary clinton would make a great president and so everything is moving along and we are not
9:58 am
probably far away from seeing the president and secretary clinton appearing together. >> unify fieiyou kno unifying t. they're not ready to get on board and you look at elizabeth warren and she's someone whether she's the vice president or the top surrogate helping her to take to the top of the e will ex-. >> certainly, bernie sanders is going to be the key. they need him right here. if anyone can bring his orders along is him. he will be a very important surrogate in the fall. >> and finally, i want to put the last question to you, abby, how active at this point do you think the clinton campaign wants senat senate sanders to be. >> the clinton campaign hopes he will be as active. i don't know they know yet. the conversations are having
9:59 am
right now. bernie sanders and clinton spoke on tuesday but that was sort of a end of the race. so they really have not yet have a chance to sit down and work through whatever they need to work through. i think the clinton campaign is hopeful of everything they could get and they are expecting, you know, all kinds of elizabeth warren and president obama and the first lady and joe biden. and bernie sanders will help but it is unclear of what they'll do at this point >> abby and carroll, thank you very much our fantastic conversation to wrap up this hour. that ends our edition. it is a fast pace hour. appreciate you joining us. stay tuned for more reaction at the white house with craig melvin picks up our coverage right now. 1:00 here in new york, good
10:00 am
day to you, i am craig melvin. the white house briefing is expected to start any minute now. it will be our second glimpse inside that oval office between bernie sanders and president obama. just a few moments ago, senator sanders telling reporters that he's stay ing in the race at least until the dc on primary on tuesday and he plans to meet with hillary clinton soon. >> i spoke briefly to secretary clinton on tuesday night and i c congratulated here on her very strong campaign. i look forward to meeting with her in the near future to see how we can work together to defeat donald trump and create a government which represents all of us and not just the 1%. >> right now, the vermont's senator on capitol hill is ready to meet with harry reid. a live look outside the senator's office.
