i'm alex witt. we have this breaking news overnight. a 5.2 magnitude earthquake has hit california. according to the u.s. geological survey it struck out in san diego county and it happened after 1:00 a.m. local time. just within the last couple of hours. the police department said there are no reports of damage right now. nbc los angeles is reporting that some residents in l.a. which is about 150 miles away felt that quake. thousands will gather in louisville, kentucky, today to bid a final farewell to the people's champion, muhammad ali. a two-day memorial began yesterday as thousands of people gathered for a muslim prayer service to honor the late boxer and among them louis farrakhan, jesse jackson and don king. today's tribute will begin with a procession through ali's hometown, passing major locations including his childhood home, followed by a multifaith service. at last night's ceremony, many

donald trump's business tactics under new scrutiny this morning as an investigation by "usa today" reports hundreds in business who accused trump of not paying everything they were owed. it's raising questions about his history of dealing with the little guy. nbc's hallie jackson has more. >> reporter: at harrah's casino, the original slot machines sat on bases built by the friels, cabinet makers who won a contract for the construction in '80s but lost more than $80,000 in the process. paul friel says they just never got paid in full. >> absolutely it was the beginning of the end. >> reporter: five years after finishing the work, the family business out of business. >> it hurt right up until the end when my father died nine years ago. he talked about it a lot. he was not proud to have been involved with donald trump. >> reporter: donald trump often points to his business skills as proof he can make america great again.

but a new analysis of the business dealings shows friels' not alone. a special report discovering at least 60 lawsuits, plus hundreds of other liens and judgments over the last three decades from people who say trump and his businesses stiffed them. not just some of trump's own lawyers but a dishwasher, a plumber, waiters and bartenders. lots of who you might call little guys. people like michael diehl. he delivered to trump taj mahal $100,000 worth of grand pianos but only received $70,000 when the company refused to pay all of what it owed him. >> anyone running a small business as an independent business person, that's a lot of money. it hurt. it was hard to get over. >> reporter: but the candidate and his daughter argued to "usa today" it's unfair to point to these instances of unpaid bills. that it's blown out of proportion. paling in comparison to the checks cut each other.

investigators say gray suffered a severe neck injury that resulted in his death. prosecutors say gray's injuries were the result of an intentional rough ride and that video shows officer goodson running a stop sign and crossing the center line. the defense says that detainees are known to fall asleep while being taken in. and the judge admonished the defense for withholding a meeting with the defense. prosecutors have been ordered to hand over any evidence they may have withheld by monday. officer goodson opted for a bench trial. another officer was acquitted by the same judge. there are new developments in the sexual assault case involving the stanford university athlete. another side to the attacker, brock turner. nbc's gadi schwartz has the latest. >> reporter: new evidence reveal another side of star swimmer brock turner. caught in lies about his drug

and drinking use. the texts were found, one text to a friend, oh, dude, did acid with blank last week. in the months before this sexual assault of an unconscious female, a text asked do you think i could buy some whack so we can do some dabs, highly concentrated marijuana oil. this is a stark contrast to the clean cut image he presented of himself to the court at his sentencing. turner writing to the judge, i was an inexperienced drinker and partygoer and blaming the swim team for a party culture saying, i just accepted these things they showed me as normal. he said he made a mistake and drank too much and never meant to hurt the victim and what he did was consensual. on the stanford campus, protests are planned for a graduation sunday. as public support for the victim continues to grow. >> i didn't eat. i didn't sleep. >> around the world, women and men now reading the victim's powerful statement to the court as a rallying cry against sexual
