mohammed ali to the cemetery, where he will be laid to rest later this morning. taking a route through the city where he was born and raised and learned how to box. a very public memorial will begin roughly four hours from now, alib, died a week ago, ali a three-time heavyweight champ who defended his title 21 times in his career, arguably the best fighter of his generation, but he was more than just a boxer. a decision also cost him three years of his prime as well. it helped to fuel the opposition

to the war. it helped cement his status as one of the most consequential figures in human history. after his diagnosis with parkinson's as well. he was building his legacy as a philanthropist, a global ambassador, a symbol of kirj. also some breaking political news this morning. we are watching live pictures here, this is outside hillary clinton's home in washington, d.c. momentariab momentarily with more on that meeting, let's get to a park, right next to the ali center. 6 there's that big screen that's been set up so folks can watch today's memorial service, talk to us a little bit about the memorial service, and folks are already starting to gather there. >> absolutely, i'm going to set

the scene for you between the park and the mohammed ali center. in fact we're actually standing right outside the kentucky performing arts center. a little bit of a park here that overlooks the highway, and all along the highway, we start seeing people line up. many of them with their cameras out, their phones out, getting ready to take pictures as the funeral procession starts up. it's going to stop there for a minute as it continues it's journey, all around downtown louisville, mohammed ali boulevard, and then make its way to the cemetery. but the crowds are expected to gather here, they have set up a big screen here, you can see the big field, the park here, they're expecting about 800 people to make it out here. they have set up a tent out

here, giving out water, it's going to be a very hot stay, but they don't think it's going to -- expected to get under way around 2:00 p.m. this afternoon, incredible turnout of people. 14,000 expected to be at the young center. the eulogies delivered by the widow of mohammed ali as well as his children. notable speakers, billy crystal, the speaker and actor. you're going to have will smith who played ali in the movie ali. and it is going to be a remarkable day here, as we mentioned, the heat not going to set people back, more people are continuing to pour in here, they're expecting to watch this very moving tribute that's going to take place in a couple of hour from now, craig?

>> let's talk about ali outside the ring, the first time you met the champ, do you remember that? >> the first time i met him was at the olympics, it was little different, i wasn't a kid anymore. i was like i'm not as big as him, but i think i can get there. so it kind of inspired me to continue to work hard. >> what was it do you think about the way he carried himself after his years in the ring that really endeared him to millions the world over? >> i actually believe that the faith that he had, he knew that he was more than a fighter, he knew he had -- he was on a mission. and even with his parkinson's disease, he proved what a champion really is. he didn't quit. he stayed on him before the people, he wasn't embarrassed by

what he was going through, and he knew he was going to endure. it kind of showed the person who he is. deep within. the last time that you talked to the champ, when was that and what was that like? >> the last-time he was -- years ago to his parkinson's disease, i saw him in vegas, and i can see where you had to hold him up to make sure that he didn't lose his balance and things like that, but he would still come out because he wanted to inge spire people. he wasn't afraid of what people think and what people may say about him. a lot of the time, a lot of people celebrities kind of stay in and, you know, they don't -- they want people to see them. >> he wanted to be seen a certain way. at that image of the olympics, seeing mohammed ali come out,

so this meeting ask going to fuel vp speculation, but we don't know exactly if that's what mrs. clinton has in mind? >> reporter: we don't know that for sure, jose, but you're right the vp speculation around elizabeth warren has exploded in recent days specifically because she did this interview last night where rachel maddow where she said flat out that she would be ready to be commander in chi chief. this truck deliver iing -- we d know elizabeth warren is on capitol hill, they're expected to meet here at about 10:45 this morning, we know that the two of them have talked over the course of the past couple of weeks, although they have said they have not discussed the

possibility of elizabeth warren being the vice presidential pick. they have talked in broad brush strokes and elizabeth warren has reelly emerged as squung who's been able to get under donald trump's skin in the clinton campaign. he of course tweeting her again, calling her pochahantas. that's trump's nickname for her. elizabeth warren going after trump last night where she called him a racist bully. the clinton camp viewer they see her as a quote, unquote weapon of war against donald trump and that's clearly impressed a lot of people in the clinton headquarters. >> bernie sanders met with the president yesterday, and he's still in the race, although he as a different kind of conversation recently.

>> reporter: he's still kind of processing the end of his campaign, i would say, you saw a significant shift in tone after that white house meeting, bernie sanders clearly knowing that -- he came out talking about the policies and priorities that are important to him. he was talking about how he would be the better candidate to take on donald trump. there's still some work to do, hillary clinton and bernie sanders still planning to meet, the latest details have not been worked out. and of course bernie sanders and jane his wife, plan to return to vermont, take a little time to consider this decision. still some work to two, but hillary clinton speaking to a lot of those voters who were backing bernie sanders in the primary. he has become something of a phenomenon that some people didn't expect. but a lot of people who are

backing bernie sanders have tried to draft elizabeth warren into this race from the beginning, she really has kind of grabbed on to the spotlight here, and i think the clinton campaign feels like she is a very good messenger to that group of people that they know that they need to excite. a little bit on the back burner today. casey hunt with a cavalcade of trucks behind her as this interview has gone on. while clinton rides this new wave of support, there's new -- halle jackson is covering the trump campaign here this morning. how is trump trying to get the establishment behind him. >> as we get ready for donald trump to speak in a few hours

here, you can see james lanford speaking behind me. you heard from paul ryan over the last 24 hours talking about how donald trump has a ways to go in this campaign and you heard it today from mitch mcconnell. i want to play you a little bit of what mcconnell had to say in a bloomberg interview. >> donald trump needs someone highly experienced and very knowledgeable about the issues. >> there you have the senate majority leader talking about how donald trump doesn't know a lot about the issues and needing to pick a vice presidential candidate in mcconnell's view who does in order to supplement trump's apparently perceived weakness in that area, as the democrats have appeared to unite very quickly.

hear me? >> reporter: yeah, i do. it's a little bit loud, you're talking about this story out in usa today, how trump has been faced with lawsuits over the last few decades, hundreds of leans and judgments the people who say he has not paid their bills in full. this is part of an investigation by usa today, talking about legal action that trump and his companies have faced. now there are these questions about those claims. we spoke to a couple of folks who say that they struggled after trump refused to finish paying what he owed them or his companies refused to finish paying what he owes them. his father essentially went out of business because he wasn't able to get work in atlantic city, he blames trump for that. now the trump cam pain has --

essentially saying number one these cases were long ago, number two, trump defending his actions, if ivanka saying -- trump making the argument that that essentially is what the country should be doing, that's the attitude the country should have, trump making the case that in these situations, in these instances, they're basically blown out of proportion, he's pointing to the thousands of checks that the trump companies cut to different businesses each month. but it's part of the continued scrutiny that trump will face during this general election. >> halle jackson, thank you for joining us this morning. we're going to go back to clinton's home, there you see it in washington, fresh off warren's endorsement of hillary clinton last night.

>> they have been talking to each other about technical down into the latest details. so if in fact elizabeth warren is something that's going to be considered for vice president, this could be a critical part of the process. when you talk to clinton aides, they name is most important things for this process. first and foremost, being qualified and ready to serve as commander in chief. elizabeth warren answered that question in the affirmative. on the rachel maddow show, she was asked about some comments governor ed rendel said. she said i do believe i'm qualified to be commander in chief. the second piece of this is

whether or not they're able to work closely together. barack obama and vice president joe biden have been pretty close and biden has worked extensively, they meet and talk every day, that's kind of a model that they have been working off of and it can work better in many ways, this is something that of course is nearby, and involved in every decision that you're making. this is the beginning of that process for them potentially. overall the speculation has really exploded the last couple of days around elizabeth warren as she has increased her attacks on donald trump, elizabeth warren has shown that she can be a weapon of war against donald trump and perhaps that's the most important criteria. >> there's always cost benefit analysis made when someone is considering their vice president ticket, the cost benefit of elizabeth warren and when ed

rendel said what he did, what was the reason for that? >> yeah, jose, i think there's two ways to look at the running mate. elizabeth warren would be really kind of an effective weapon of war against donald trump, engaging him on twitter, being able to get under his skin. but the other component of a running mate is someone who would actually be the governor. there is kind of a web on elizabeth warren, she has always been someone who shakes things up, that is something she has done very well, when she was at harvard law, when she was serving in the obama administration and certainly in the u.s. senate. but sometimes actually someone who kind of shakes things up isn't usually the person to be as a vice president. you actually have to be under control, you have to go along to get along and there's a question whether hillary clinton wants someone who would kind of more

fit into that role as a governing vice president versus someone who would be a weapon of war in a campaign and there's another potential down side, is that there's a republican governor in massachusetts, so if elizabeth warren ends up becoming vice president, you would have a -- there would be a special election, so bottom line, democrats would end up losing control of that senate seat for at least a few months and so that is also when, you know, if hillary clinton beings president, you're talking about an early honeymoon, democrats being down one senator, is certainly a cost-benefit analysis. >> here's video of senator warren leaving her office. she's expected to arrive any second now to hillary clinton's home there in washington, d.c. mark, talk about the political

ramifications of this, there's also the fact that there would be two women and that also has to come into play. >> you look back at 1992 when bill clinton -- it's very possible that you could end up having a presidential ticket on the democratic side of two white females in hillary clinton and elizabeth warren. and warren isn't the only one who has potential on the veep stakes. the potential down site -- it's just not having two women on the ticket, jose, it's also being able to add a progressive voice if hillary clinton and her campaign believe that they need to be able to fan in a little

bit more to that bernie sanders progressive movement to really get democrats excited. >> and some of the people that i guess are being talked about as possibly being vetted for running mates. it's interesting because there you have right in the center of it. you have julian castro, you have some perez, and you have someone who is pretty much fluid in spanish and is the issue of someone who could maybe speak another language reach out to the 55 million plus latinos that live in this country and are able to vote, is that something that should also be thought about when we're talking about possible vp candidates? >> absolutely, jose, and of course julio castro and tim

perez. but adding a voice like julio castro and tom perez, is it seen as necessary as maybe it was a year ago when the thought was that marco rubio or jeb bush would end up being the republican nominee? here's the thinking that democrats are going to be fine with the latino community that you're going to be making up hillary clinton's vice presidential running mate and you have seen the registration of latino voter has spiked through the roof. i do think that there was more of a necessity for having a julio castro a year argue, and of course not as much now, but all the people we're fog about are in the top tier of vice presidential possibilities. >> casey, i mean you have covered this race throughout the country, is it going to be a

case where hillary clinton would have to think about bringing swung on board who could fire up parts of the voting public that maybe aren't as involved or enthusiastic about the process now that for example bernie sanders may now be in. >> reporter: i think that's possible, jose, and i think bernie sanders, people who are close to bernie sanders, one take away in last night's meeting and one overarching feeling, is that he has polarized a lot of independents and other people who might not be involved in the political process. he has brought new people into the process for the party, many independents, example and that's something they want to continue to push forward with, and they also want to be part of the go

dressive left. depending on how you decide to run a presidential campaign, you're appealing to independent voters in swing states, if hillary lynne is not able to do that by herself, then that presents a risk. if you also think about the states where donald trump is talking about -- we could potentially surprise in pennsylvania, for example, ohio, that sort of rust belt strategy, those are some of the same places you you have low income, white voters who might be excited to vote for elizabeth warren, who might come out if in fact you have the right vice presidential candidate out there talking about issues they care about. >> and is elizabeth warren, does she tap in the same level or group of people that bernie sanders taps into? >> yeah, jose, i think she taps into some of those same people,

but not all of them. as casey was mentioning, just bernie sanders being on the campaign trial for an entire year, people that might not actually be familiar with elizabeth warren's name. but a lot of young kids, a lot of college students, a lot of first-time voters, i do think there's kind of an overlap in the bernie sanders world, with hillary clinton's own political orbit. if you're not going to pick bernie sanders, picking elizabeth warren, you're not able to progress into those grass roots, but it doesn't give you -- hillary clinton is going to have to utilize bernie sanders on the campaign trail, she has ngn't received an endorsement from bernie 157bders. >> casey, any thoughts on when

bornie sanders -- any thoughts on that? >> well, he has said that he plans to stay in this race at least until the district of columbia votes on tuesday. an issue that he cares a lot about and that's why he says he wants to stay in. he's said all along that he wants to let every person in the country who wants to vote in the democratic primary to have their say. that's been very important for him from the beginning. as well as, you know, the issues that have driven his campaign, i would be surprised if you see him leave this -- i'm staying in this race for d.c. because i'm the better person to beat donald trump than hillary clinton is, he's talking about issues that the clinton campaign has

certainly taken notes of that. >> and mark, we cannot underestimate the importance, the impact of president obama on the campaign trail for hillary clinton, and that's expected soon. >> it's certainly not happening on wednesday, you can see how everything went down yesterday where president bauch in that meeting with bernie sanders, they have that walk and they had the hour long meeting in the oval office, and not too much longer after that, there was the video released of president obama endorsing. and here's someone who has been champing at the bit to get on the campaign trail. not only does he enjoy this, he enjoys campaigning, but also so much of his legacy is on the line. he wants to be able to go out

>> reporter: it is basically all we're chatting about this morning here, jose, she hadn't necessarily been at the top of a lot of vice presidential lists when this -- it became clear very quickly, it was kind of a storm of tweets that set this off initially and it became clear that she had the capacity to get under donald trump's skin a little bit. donald trump responding, talking got her on the stump, to offer one of his trademark nicknames for her and the clinton cam pain took a lot of notice and you saw her step even farther into that role last night in the speech at the american constitutional society, where she talked about trump's role with the judiciary, but she also called him a racist bully. she's able in many ways to level these angrier more aggressive

attacks than the presidential nominee might not be able to. and she's been very effective at it. she has started in the last couple of weeks to directly talk to hillary clinton. both clinton and warren say they haven't discussed the vice presidential selection process. the question of course is that the agenda warning. you saw this go into hillary clinton's washington, d.c. home, here in the neighborhood, i'm sure you're familiar with it. they're anticipated to meet through the morning, they're going to delay hillary clinton's speech to planned parenthood because of this meeting. you also had warren in her interview with rachel maddow where rachel asked her directly, do you believe you're qualified to be commander in chief?

she respond eed yes i do, a and left it at that. clinton aides have put it at the top of their list for criteria about who their vice presidential pick might be. the others a poekt here of course figuring out how to -- that bernie sanders tapped into so effectively and that hillary clinton of course has in some ways struggled to connect with, and having somebody like elizabeth warren who would like to be able to be out there on the campaign trail, potentially motivating in the vice presidential role. at this point the short list still not something that the clinton campaign wants to get into any kind of detail. and hillary clinton herself, still grappling with this -- of having the man who was once her

gets on board with her. there are definitely some young voters who maybe they don't even know who elizabeth warren is necessarily, but they have really tapped into bernie sanders and he became a phenomenon on social media. barack obama of course had the benefit of having these young people on his side. it's an area where they know they have some work to do k i think they're also convinced that these same young people are not going to be ending up going to the polls for trump. they feel pretty confident about that. the question is simply one of turnout and making sure they activate as many democratic voters as possible. it's not clear yet, we're still obviously going to see the polling the effects of this democratic unity, pretty much across the board. a lot of clinton -- donald trump kind of had that bump, they looked at those numbers and they said okay this is because

the procession is now under way in louisville, kentucky for mohammed ali. there you see our live pictures. craig melvin is there, craig, we see the procession a little bit delayed, but it's begun now right? >> reporter: the procession was delayed by almost a full hour, we're told, jose, close to it. it was pretty interesting watching former heavyweight champ lennox lewis and mike tyson hoigsisting the casket of mohammad ali, as that caravan winds it's way through the streets, this is where mohammed ali not only was born, but he grew up here, learned how to box here, he grew up on the west side. that city still pretty much

segregated, by and large. you see folks lining the streets of louisville to pay their respects. i have talked to a number of these well wishers and they are not just from louisville, folks have descended on this city from all over the country. i talked to a guy from detroit, michigan who said he just had to come and see the champ one last time. there was a woman here from texas who said her father was a huge ali fan, she just had to be here one last time. the procession is going to take at least an hour, hour and a half, it will go through the city stopping at -- stress that, not stopping, but passing by some of ali's favorite spots, including his alma mater, central high school, it will also pass by the ali center, that was a center that was started back in 2005 by him and

his wife lonnie. and it will end at kay hill cemetery, the largest cemetery here in heuvel, and there is where there will be a private burial ceremony. his body we're told will be buried in the muslim tradition. it happen wrapped in a white cloth and he will face mecca. shortly thereafter, they will all head back to the young center that 2:00, very public memorial service, it is set to start at 2:00, we're told that will probably also begin a few minutes late as well. it is also going to go on for roughly 2 1/2 hours, among the eulogyi eulogyists, former president bill clinton and others are expected to share their fond memories of the greater. >> from louisville to the world. craig, here's a guy who group up in louisville and ended up being
