9:00 am
good day to all of you. i'm alex witt. breaking news at this hour, new information from police on the shocking murder of a popular reality show contestant shot dead as she signs autographs. in politics, on the attack, donald trump punches back hard today at mitt romney for what the former gop presidential nominee just said about him. that's the ticket, could hillary clinton and elizabeth warren unite two factions of the democratic party in one bold move? politics and prose one of the best selling authors of all time gives us a must read for the beach season and how politics could be involved. any minute now donald trump is set to take the stage at a rally in tampa, florida. the first of two campaign stops there as we look at florida governor rick scott who is doing an introduction. second rally will have him in moon township, pennsylvania
9:01 am
outside of pittsburgh. at his rally last night in richmond, virginia, trump took aim at elizabeth warren who says she has cherokee ancestry. pocahontas is not happy. she's not happy. she's the worst. you know, pocahontas -- i'm doing such a disservice to pocahontas. so unfair. but this elizabeth warren, i call her goofy, elizabeth warren, she's one of the worst senators in the entire united states senate. i hope she's going to be chosen by hillary. oh, would that being a great. i would love it. >> warren has apparently responded in an indirect way snapping up the rights to pocahontas.com. that website redirects to warren's own home page where visitors are asked to sign an anti-trumpetion. in a new interview, mitt romney slams trump for his controversial comments about a
9:02 am
mexican-american judge. >> i don't want to see a president of the united states saying things which change the character of the generations of americans that are following. presidents have an impact on the nature of our nation and trickle down racism, trickle down bigotry, all these things are extraordinarily dangerous to the heart and character of america. >> trump responded this morning with a tweet saying romney choked in his own presidential bid adding i'm the least racist person there is. this election interrupted game our of the nba finals in cleveland when a shirtless protester ran on the court with an anti-trump slogan painted on his chest. the man was quickly dragged away by security officer. joining me right now nbc jacob is standing by at the trump rally in tampa, florida. do you know what the focus of his message will be today?
9:03 am
>> reporter: trump just took the stage. he was preceded by rick scott the governor first time i can remember that they are campaigning together. we expect him to come out swinging. it's been a rough week for donald trump. those several days of criticism after his comments about the judge because of his heritage really came down hard. those top republican leaders on him. then you saw him with that pressure on him to change his tone come out with a couple of teleprompter speeches. last night he came back out to a rally and came out swinging as you heard who he calls possib pocahont pocahontas. going after crooked hillary. he really needs to win florida and all of the speakers who preceded him talked about him winning not only florida but all sorts of swing states and others that you might not think about when it comes to republican. he made it clear his plan is to do things that other republicans have never done. he just comes out and says we're going to win, win, win and comes
9:04 am
out swinging. that's his consistent message even though in the past week and a half or so the polls really haven't favored him even fox and rasmussen poll that had him up a week and a half ago, this week is down. the momentum is with hillary clinton. you know he wants to haeng that. we'll see what news comes out of this rally. >> yep. i know you'll be listening for that. as you look around is it a packed auditorium there? >> reporter: i'm so sorry i can't hear your question. >> is it a packed auditorium there? unlike last night potentially where there were lots of spaces. >> reporter: right. so i'm looking at several thousand people and there are empty spaces behind the cameras. that's not that unusual. it's not anything really dramatic here. but last night was pretty dramatic. >> indeed. thank you so much. now for the latest on hillary
9:05 am
clinton, kelly o'donnell is in washington following that campaign. another good day to you kelly. in her first speech as the democratic presumptive nominee clinton went after trump on the women's issues. is this her main line of attack going forward? >> reporter: a powerful constituency. hillary clinton herself as a chief campaigner but lots of surrogates in that community who will try to support her against donald trump. he has given the democrats plenty to work with, and that is certainly notable. today hillary clinton has no public events and that holds true for tomorrow as well. we are learning from our colleague danny freeman who has been following the bernie sanders campaign that tomorrow bernie sanders has invited some of his top aides and supporters and close allies to burlington, vermont for sort of a meeting
9:06 am
about the future of the campaign. we don't know what direction that will take but it is notable they are going to have sort of a personal summit up in vermont. and we can also tell you that hillary clinton is already trying to make that turn to the general election to give you a sense of how it plays out when she's speaking to a crowd talking about the issues you mentioned here's a piece of hillary clinton speaking before planned parenthood on friday. >> when donald trump says let's make america great again, that is code for let's take america backward. back to a time when opportunity and dignity were reserved for some not all. back to the days when abortion was illegal, women had far fewer options and life for too many women and girls was limited.
9:07 am
well, donald, those days are over. >> reporter: sort of hard to imagine, alex, that they were friendly at one point and that trump was, in fact, a donor to hillary clinton. things change in politics and certainly as adversaries over the next several months we'll see that kind of rhetoric. for clinton she's taking some sharp jabs but in a more restrained tone and we know donald trump is preparing to deliver a speech sort of out lining his attacks against both the clintons, the former president and hillary clinton in new hampshire this coming week. so the other big news will be barack obama going on the trail with hillary clinton in wisconsin on wednesday. alex. >> we look forward to all of that. thank you so much. so for more on clinton's now historic campaign let's bring in "the washington post" national political reporter who is covering clinton on trail and senior white house correspondent of the hill and co-author of hrc. ann you spoke with secretary clinton on wednesday just after
9:08 am
she became the presumptive democratic nominee. somebody who has been covering her for some time what surprised the most about that conversation? >> one thing that surprised me, alex, is really how almost emotional she was even a day later. it was clearly was an emotional night on tuesday when she claimed the nomination, and was surrounded by such a huge, really for her one of the largest rallies she's had and highly supportive crowd. but she's a very reserved and cautious politician, not that way always in regular conversation or behind the scenes but that's definitely the way she presents herself both on stage and in interviews. she seemed much more relaxed and open and kind of emotional in talking about the difficulty that she had had the night
9:09 am
before getting through the speech, that if you remember at the start of the speech she was sort of quiet and slow and deliberative and really seemed to sort of be measuring her words and she said a day later that was because she was really having to compose herself as she spoke. >> yes. on the verge of tears. understandably. a huge moment. amy, clinton spent her first couple of days since becoming the presumptive nominee targeting women voters. first the planned parenthood speech and this new ad rehashing trump's comments about women. what does that say to you >> she's trying to coalesce the progressives that supported bernie sanders. she wants to tell them or signal to them as she moves the general election she hasn't forgotten about them. yesterday she mentioned a lot of issues they might care about, roe versus wade, donald trump would reverse that and appoint
9:10 am
supreme court justices that they wouldn't like and wouldn't speak to their causes. this is something that she has to work on especially with millennials. she does very well with older women, women who have had power struggles and all that with men but with millennials she actually feels like she has to court them more. all these whom supported bernie sanders, they are very adamant in that they don't want to support her. i think she was speaking directly to them. >> bernie sanders, where does he fit into this now? he's been vowing to stay with this thing until the convention. but many people are closing the book on his bid. what do you think his function is now and is he damaging clinton? >> i think he was damaging her in the past and a lot of allies told me that in my reporting in the last few weeks. right now he has to go through the stages of grief. he has to accept the campaign is over, she clinched the nomination. he has to meet with her.
9:11 am
we're seeing the beginnings of that. he met with president obama this week. he sort of closed the chapter with his own supporters tomorrow and in the coming days and then i think we'll see a meeting akin to what secretary clinton and senator obama had in 2008 where they got together at senator fi diane feinstein's house. there's a lot of tensions on both sides. a lot of lingering tensions. they need to get past that before he can tell his supporters and telegraph to his supporters they need to support hillary. >> you asked clinton about winning over sanders supporters. what do you think it will take and can she pull it off by november >> certainly by november, yes. it certainly, there will be some hold outs. there are confirmed bernie supporters, one of the reasons that they are bernie supporters because they really dislike her and would not vote for her no
9:12 am
matter what. that's a slinging minorishrinki. people who are holding their nose a bit may want a reason to support her. as amy said the planned parenthood speech is part of that. she will be doing more of that sort of very liberal kind of events and those sorts of speeches and appearances even as she tries to do the other thing that she has to do in pivoting to the general now which is broaden her appeal to moderate women, republicans who are turned off by trump and certainly to independents. she's got to do both of those things in parallel. one thing bernie sanders can do for her if he chooses to is help rally his own former supporters and say now you must roll behind clinton because if you don't you're giving donald trump a much wider avenue to the white house and no one wants that. that is an argument that the
9:13 am
clinton people are making to him in hope that he'll make to it his supporters. >> i'm out of time. i got to ask you on the basis of bernie sanders, yes, no or maybe answer. bernie sanders a possible vp candidate, ann then amy. yes, no or maybe? >> i would say maybe to no. i don't think it's something bernie sanders himself appears that interested in and it would be problematic for her for a number of reasons. >> amy? >> i would probably say a solid no, alex. i don't see it happening. you know, even lingering tensions as i talked about and on both sides i don't see that happening. i don't think he would take it and i don't think she would give to it him. >> ladies good to see you both. we'll turn now to florida and the breaking news from there where moments ago the orlando police department gave more details on the death of the voi vo voice contestant. >> a white mail approached
9:14 am
grimmie. he approached her and opened fire striking her. at that almost immediately her brother tackled the suspect to the ground. shortly after that the suspect killed himself. the suspect traveled to orlando, apparently to commit this crime and then had plans to travel back to where he came from. >> my colleague has been following this story for us. it's just a tragedy. what else are we learning about this shooting? >> this is as you mentioned a really shocking story to wake up to on a saturday morning. christina first came to our television screens as part of season six, third runner up on the voice. adam levine posted i'm sad, shocked confused, we love you so mu much. "the voice" tweeted he lost an amazing soul. we heard from carson daly who
9:15 am
told us on the "today" show how she used to walk into a room and light it up. take a listen to what he said. >> we're still in shock. we're just so saddened by the news of christina who has incredible talent and was an incredible person. seems so fresh. i kind of woke up here in the middle of the night here on the east coast and heard she was shot. the bad news of her passing, i mean it's just so sad. so young. >> alex, that's the tone of shock we're hearing rippling through hollywood and beyond. i just want to reiterate some of those new details we're learning about the suspect. late this morning there was a press conference by world police department and they said that a 21-year-old unidentified white male walked up to where she was hosting her concert just moments later. he walked up to her, shot her and he had traveled specifically to orlando to commit this heinous act. police have not said where he
9:16 am
was traveling from. after he shot her, her brother actually tackled him while he still had the gun and then the gunman turned the gun on himself and killed himself. so the big question police are still wonder cigarette why. again this is a young 22-year-old woman who had come to our television screens on "the voice" and that's why police are trying to piece together any clues they can. >> makes no sense at all. thank you. with or without donald trump, are there people at mitt romney's retreat planning to dump trump? and as we go break here's donald trump in florida right now striking many of his familiar tleems. >> wait until after the convention. don't bother. i don't want to do that. i'm sitting at home. i'll listening to lies being told to me by this dishonest media. they are so dishonest. man. i watched this poor sad mitt romney this morning.
9:17 am
he suffers from msygonist. i don't think he knows what is it. he's sitting like a real stiff. this guy let us down. he choked and let us down. he knows that. look, he doesn't like trump because i said you can't give him a third chance. he lost the first time. he really lost the second time p.m. and the second time was a race that was an easy one. we had a failed president, we had a president who is a disaster and was a disaster, and at that point he was even lower than he is now. so we had a failed president and we had a candidate that didn't work like he should have worked. he wasn't doing television. you know, i called up, i supported him. i gave him a tremendous amount of money. if they used me in florida he would have won florida. but, you know what sydney worked for him. then when i heard he was going

i wish there had been somebody that would have stopped donald trump and if i had been in the race i would have taken him on. i think changing the rules and denying him the nomination at this point is likely not to happen. >> it's being talked about as a last ditch never trump attempt but doesn't sound like it's at the top of the agenda. romney said republicans waited too long to take on trump. a contested convention is not likely. a former adviser to mr. romney
9:22 am
and senator rubio as well here to talk to me about this. before we went to break we were listening to a little bit of donald trump essentially ripping into mitt romney. what was your reaction as you heard that? >> it's sad, alex. look, this is the classy donald trump we've dome expect on the campaign trail and it's unfortunate because at the end of the day he has the opportunity to prosecute an argument against hillary clinton that's based on the economy and national security and instead he's wasting his time attacking a man who served his country and his party admirably in 2012, who donald trump supported. and it's the hight of hypocrisy for him to say mitt romney was a choker and didn't serve the party well. look i don't expect anything differently from donald trump, alex, so this is no surprise to me. >> it sounded like a resigned mitt romney what we were playing there at the top. somebody figures this election cycle is doom. to concussion on holding on to
9:23 am
republican control of the house and senate. how do you salvage of what's left of the republican party? >> i think it will be tough, alex. the reality is the top of the ticket matters a lot. i've been involved in four presidential campaign cycles and in every single cycle top of the ticket matters in terms of how many of our house and senate candidates perform in the republican party sponsorship it is going to be crucially important, i think, for those candidates to be able to run their own races in states like ohio and new hampshire, for example. governor romney did say last night that was a priority for him hanging on to the house and senate and he'll work hard to make sure republicans can do that. >> what about paul ryan who was put on-the-spot during this retreat being asked how he can support donald trump. i know you said, quote, i know he wants to uniffify the party. i don't know it can be unified given that we have a very divisive nominee.
9:24 am
>> alex, it's going to be difficult but i think we have to understand that paul ryan and mitt romney are in very different positions. they sit in different chairs. paul ryan is the speaker of the house. he's the head of our party in a lot of the ways. the head of the conservative movement. mitt romney highly respected i think by many former nominees. they have different views on this race. it's okay. it's going to be difficult for donald trump to you night the party. you have somebody who is highly divisive in donald trump and said outrageous things. we can't expect everybody to fall in line. at the end of the day we have to look forward to how the republicans can save the house and senate races that's in contest this fall. >> what about the list of attendees at the idea summit. it reads as a who's who of gop heavy hitters. talk about the agenda. what's in front of them there? >> this is the fourth time, alex, that governor romney has
9:25 am
put on this summit. the goal is to convene a group of people who originally began as a network of supporters of governor romney during his two presidential campaigns to come together and discuss a whole set of issues and ideas and policy as well as business so this year's gathering was great. we had a lot of old friends and familiar faces and new folks as well. largely a diversity of views were represented here. it was painted sort of as a never trump gathering but as you alluded to we had folks who were supportive of trump and people who don't care for him. it's a great gathering. still going on here now and will wrap up in a few hours. >> for those who don't care for donald trump, is there anything donald trump can do to bring people on board before the election or before the convention so it's a unified convention? >> alex, here's the problem. you know the last two weeks, last three weeks here have been very difficult for donald trump. he's been the presumptive republican nominee. he's had an opportunity really
9:26 am
to make the case about why he's well suited to go up against hillary clinton. the problem is the last couple of weeks have been disastrous for him. he had this comments about the judge. they haven't built a campaign that's able to win in the fall. i think for some people it may be irrecoverable. others will wait and watch. these next few weeks will be crucial because the last two weeks have not served him well. >> what about romney's consideration to endorse gary journey a libertarian candidate. can he still do that and then campaign for the down ballot republicans? >> i think what governor romney said yesterday is he's got an open mind in terms are of supporting somebody who is not donald trump or hillary clinton. he said i'm not going to support clinton, i won't support trump. the question is could you see yourself supporting somebody else. mitt romney has to make that calculus. he's 100% committed to helping some of our folks who are in down ballot races, senate races,
9:27 am
house races. the open seat we have in the florida. he's absolutely committed to doing those things and i think regardless of what he does at the top of the ticket he'll be very involved in helping house and senate candidates. >> thank you so much for the conversation in that beautiful part of the world. get back to those meetings. bernie sanders next move. when could the presidential candidate bow out of the race and what future role could he play on the campaign trail? head-to-head polls is that there's a lot of folks who are not prepared to support her who are prepared to support bernie. and that really comes down the fact -- look, this is a complex race. you have a republican who on the one hand even the speaker of the house is proned to make racist comments on the other hand running to the left of hillary on war and trade. and there are people in our country who quite frankly those are their two biggest issues. so she's going to have to really decide whether she wants to lead all of bernie's supporters and that's going to be up to her. key not control them. key only lead them. same with her. she has to choose who she wants to lead. >> given all the people with whom you've spoken, all the bernie sanders supporters over these many months, do you find the stronger, i guess push or pull for them is to defeat donald trump, or to defeat
