a terrorists motive? a domestic dispute? they have to sort through that. the main thing is, is there any other conspiracies, and that's what they want to find out and then they can get more in anaesthetic mode. >> new details are coming in on the shooting. for those of you just joining us, we have been covering breaking news out of orlando, florida, where there were reports of a shooting in the pulse nightclub, and police called this as mass casualties, and people have been taken to the local area hospitals and eyewitness accounts saying there was 150 people or more when shooting started. police were on the scene, and one eyewitness said as he was
3:01 am
helping others, the shooting was still going on, and there have been 30 to 40 police cars in the orlando area, and s.w.a.t. team and k-9 units and helicopters on the scene, and it was a very busy nightclub in downtown orlando. the shooter inside the club is dead and that was after a controlled explosion and since then we have seen ambulances leaving the scene of the nightclub, and possibly taking those injured to the hospital units. right now we are going to go to sarah dallof who has been following this. what can you tell us about the scene now? >> reporter: we are seeing movement here on the scene, especially since the announcement from the police that the shooter is dead. we have seen ambulances leave and we have a crime scene investigation unit pulling up here on scene and we are seeing movement, we are seeing law enforcement officers coming down the street, more and more, and
3:02 am
orlando police confirming this has been a massive response to this scene. they are getting assistance from local, state and federal, and the news that the shooter is dead comes less than an hour after the controlled explosion that we heard out here, a single large boom, after which orlando police released that that was a controlled explosion, and just moments after that controlled explosion we heard stau cotto bursts, and that may have been gunfire that has not been confirmed yet. the shooter in the situation, confirmed dead. this was the work of a lone gunman although they have not come out and confirmed that just yet, and now begins the difficult wait for the family and friends, people who were inside the nightclub who have not been able to reach them and
3:03 am
we have area hospitals receiving patients, family members and friends waiting there. i spoke to some of the eyewitnesses who said they were inside the club and got separated from the group they were with, and one man calling his friend and not getting an answer, and another man climbing over bodies to get out of the club, and he saw a number of bodies and was not sure how many, but witnesses just describing this scene of horror inside the nightclub. orlando police said they will be updating the media hopefully giving us better insight about where people can go to get information about loved ones, and we don't know how many are injured. we do know the gunman inside the nightclub is dead and there are a number of wounded and a number of dead and just a scene of shock and horror here for those who lived through it. back to you.
3:04 am
>> sarah dallof reporting live from the scene of the nightclub. we can still see so many police behind you and what has this done to the area? i know it has been cordoned off, and have people been coming up to see what is going on or staying at bay to let police do their job? >> reporter: it's early in the morning and people in the neighborhood have been woken up by the activity and coming down to see what is going on, and you have people trying to locate their loved ones, and there are a lot of people volunteering their assistance here right now, and they want to do what they can to help. there's not a lot that can be done while police are performing the operations, and the area was cordoned off and people were not able to get here and we are hearing about a number of heroic
3:05 am
acts where people put their own safety out there, and they could have run but helped, and we are hearing about acts of courage inside the nightclub as we wait to hear more about what went on inside. >> we know this happened at the pulse nightclub, which is south of downtown orlando on south orange avenue by west esther avenue downtown orlando. just a normal saturday night that went a little hey wear there -- a lot of haywire. there are hero moments. they have helped people get out of the scenario, so let's hope for the best and hope there are
3:06 am
not as many casualties as predicted. we know the shooter inside the club is dead, so obviously tactics on the ground are going to change here. i can hear the helicopter in the pack ground now and at one point it was there and then went away. has the action around the scene increased? >> the movement has increased. we have police dogs, k-9 units going over the parameter where the media is staged. this is new. the police have not come down this far quite yet and you are seeing more movement on the ground and ambulances leave, lights and sirens and you seeing crime scene investigation trucks pull in now. we have not seen the bomb squad leave, and that is something that caught our attention, and they pulled in and then a short
3:07 am
time later the controlled explosion, and then leading up to the shooting, saturday night, events going on all night and the party migrated for a lot of people down to this nightclub and it was latin night and it was crowded and there was a good beat going on and people enjoying themselves and everybody had a reason to be there, and celebrating with friends and they heard good things about this nightclub and wanted to give it a try and it was a party atmosphere, and then the gunshots, one after another after another, and people didn't realize what was going on at first, and one man even told us he thought it was part of the song initially, and then he saw the blasts, the light coming from the barrel of the gun and he immediately realized how serious it was. >> sarah, thank you so much for your report. we are going to come back to you in another few minutes. i want to bring in jim cavanaugh who is a former law enforcement
3:08 am
and msnbc analysts. the bomb squad has not left the scene yet. >> usually when a situation like this occurs, you know, an assailant is doing a mass shooting, once the scene is static, he could have dropped a backpack or bag or come in a vehicle, and all that has to be searched. they have to be extremely cautious. could he have left something around, inside or outside they don't know about. bomb sniffing dogs can work the area, and the bomb squad will deal with a suspicious package and the shooter's car, if there is one. that's pretty routine to do that to make sure that somebody doesn't leave a bomb, you know, when they are in a mass murder plot.
3:09 am
it happens a lot, just to remind everybody, aurora, colorado, where the assailant booby trapped his whole apartment with explosives, and when they get to the person's residence, they have to search their vehicle or something they left or dropped and there could be indications that something is a explosive device. >> as of now we have no identification to who the shooter is or what the motive was, and we just know the shooter inside the club is dead. question for you about this crime scene investigative unit that is now coming in. obviously this is the progression the way the night unfolded here, and now the crime scene investigation, and it begins another phase of the way the police are handling this. what can we expect from them? what are they going to do at the scene? >> you can expect a long and
3:10 am
slow crime scene processing, because you have multiple casualty event and it's going to be a slow unfolding crime scene once the injured are cared for, it's going to be slow. there will be a family center set up, and you saw the heartbreak of the one mom who doesn't know where her son is. a slow crime scene processing. the quick part we don't see is the white collar side of the detectives and investigators trying to determine who is this guy. how do you do that? the first thing, get his wallet. who is he? what is his reason for being here? is he a patron? does he have a dispute with the club or anybody here? is it a targeted group he is after for a variety of reasons?
3:11 am
they have to look at everything. who is this guy and why is he here? detectives want to answer that quickly, but processing the scene will not be as urgent and that will unfold all day, and maybe even a couple days depending on how large that scene is. >> as we witnessed the scene unfold, and the shooting happening around 2:00 a.m. and the police were quick to respond and people were helping people out of the club, stopping the bleeding wounds while shooting was still going on, and the response has been very quick to this, and according to you, this is standard operating procedure, and the night was their scene because they could get to these scenarios quickly, and we have seen the ambulances and the police cars, and now that we
3:12 am
have the shooter is dead, and we don't know if it was a suicide or shot by police, we don't know that. this will change the rest of the day. the sun is now coming up in orlando and the scene is going to be changing. what can we expect as the day unfolds? >> well, we can expect a lot of heartache and grief and sadness the police department and any agencies helping, and we can make sure this is the end of the event and there are no other explosiv explosives, in a car left there or assailant's home, and the motive will probably unfold as well, and the police have a lot
3:13 am
of jobs here. but you have one of america's top police forces, orlando pd. you will have family center, and forensics, and white collar investigation, and public briefings, and lots of work going on, command posts set up investigatively, and on scene tactical command, which looks like they already did their job quick, and you can't say enough praise for the patrol officers who by the eyewitness accounts were there so quickly. >> jim, if you could hold on for one second, please stay with us, and sarah dallof is standing by with a witness. let's see what the witness account is. >> reporter: hey, there, we don't yet quite have the witness. i apologize for that information, but we are working on it right now. it's one of the gentleman we

talked to earlier that had the tale of terror from inside the nightclub not realizing initially the gunfire was part of the music, and he needed to take a break for a second and gather himself and get fluids in him. it has been a traumatic morning overnight as you can understand. the nightclub itself has posted on facebook a new statement, as soon as we have information we will update everybody, and please keep everybody in your prayers as we work through this tragic event, and thank you for your thoughts and love. hours ago the nightclub posted to facebook everybody get out of pulse, and that's the name of the nightclub, everybody get out of pulse and keep running. you can see movement on the street behind me now that the information came through that the shooter is dead, we have seen fire trucks and ambulances
3:15 am
and police cars starting to move out of here, move out of the scene as the crime scene techs begins to arrive. we are waiting on information to give us more insight on what happened, how many are dead and how many are wounded and where the families and friends of the people in the nightclub can go to get more information about their loved ones. >> you have been speaking to witnesses and speaking to them all night since this has been unfolding, and the initial, their recounting of the scene, and how is the emotional state now, and how has the scene changed where they are recounting and recounting, and is there still shock? has that turned to grief? what is the scene there? >> reporter: the shock has not worn off and for some people it

3:17 am
explosives. with a does this change for orlando police? what does this do to change the night clubs? >> once the emergency is over as far as an assailant, and the tempo will change because they will have, you know, at that scene, assailant or assailants not able to hurt anybody and that changes the tactical tempo, and the scene where the detective bureau wants to uncover who the person is, to make sure there is no other attack afoot. sometimes people who are homicide annual and suicidal, they will leave explosives, or they could have killed somebody before they came here, and you saw that recently in the shooting in california where the
3:18 am
person killed somebody in minnesota and then travelled over to ucla and killed a professor. so sometimes there's a murder first. the detective has to find out who the guy is, and we still don't know if there is one or more, and who they are. motive is critical because it helps you establish if there could be any other confederates or conspirators that are want to go hurt people. once they can get that locked down, if it's a lone assailant that is now dead, the focus turns more towards the families and the processing for evidence and the ability to stop the next murder from whatever information can be gleaned from this one. >> the sun is just coming up in orlando. jim cavanagh, stay with us, we

on. there had been early reports, possibly two shooters, again, and we don't know. as you are saying this, you are saying there are so many details they have to find out, and so many scenarios that could possibly play out in this. we don't know if it was intentional and we don't know the motive behind this person who just showed up in a nightclub and started shooting. many of these details will hopefully be answered by the orlando police in the press conference or in the hours and days to come. the eyewitness accounts have been chilling as this night has unfolded. we know the shooting happened around 2:00 a.m. this morning, and police were on the scene, in fact one eyewitness was talking about how he was helping -- he took off his bandana and tried to stop the bleeding as police were coming in and there was still shooting going on. and sarah dallof has been covering this all night and we are showing you live scenes, and

sarah, you have been here all night and what can you tell us about the scene, what has changed? >> reporter: the scene on the ground, you are looking at a live picture from just outside the parameter. you can see it has changed pretty dramatically within the last little while. we have seen quite a number of law enforcement vehicles leaving the scene, and we have seen fire trucks pulling out, and before that we saw ambulances with lights and sirens, presumably taking the wounded to area hospitals, and now we are seeing the crime investigation teams come inside and the helicopters overhead and we are awaiting a news conference with the orlando police department. they promised to update this scene here, tell us exactly -- well, not exactly but more about what they know about what happened overnight. we were talking with witnesses

are asking for people who have been at the pulse nightclub that witnessed the event to please come forward to the orlando police headquarters to give details. it's been a night where we had many eyewitness accounts but not many answers. we don't know anything about the shooter but we know the shooter is dead and we don't have any numbers of the fatalities or mass casualties. the k-9 units have been on the ground. we have had sarah reporting the helicopter came early and it became quite as the s.w.a.t. teams went into the club before the controlled explosion went off. we have breaking news out of south orlando, the pulse nightclub, there was a shooting at 2:00 a.m. this morning, and now the daylight is coming, and we are going to have continuing coverage throughout the day on this and my colleague, francis

3:57 am
with the lights and sirens as soon as the shooter was pronounced dead, those have gone by. helicopter still overhead, but we are seeing more of the investigative side and crime scene techs showing up on scene. nobody has been asked to move or to go anywhere. meanwhile orlando police issued a statement, asking anybody inside the club to please come down to police headquarters to take the statement and they say any information they can provide in the case may be important to the investigation, but the big development this morning is the confirmation is the shooter, i say shooter, it's singular and not plural at this point, that shooter is dead inside the nightcl nightclub. >> what can you tell us how the scene changed especially in the last hour when the police confirmed the shooter is dead? is there any indication they

there. is there a staging area around or has everybody moved to the police department and the medical center that is about three blocks away from the club? >> reporter: everybody is scattered right now, and this is where they staged the media, and they are moving the press conference a couple blocks away and we have injured being taken to the hospitals. this is a huge scene with multiple agencies involved. >> thank you for the quick update. if you are just joining ugs at the top of the 7:00 hour eastern time, many people waking up to the horrific news, word of what police are calling a mass-casualty shooting at a orlando nightclub and you are looking at the images on the left of the scene there. and there are reports of a shooter, and then there was a st
