and we're back ♪ >> and we're back here in new york at the top of the hour. again, what we are covering is the worst mass shooting in united states history. americans woke up early this morning to learn that it had been closing time last call, 2:00 a.m. eastern time when shots started -- were fired inside a club called pulse in orlando, florida. just south of the main center of downtown. and then the death toll started to grow. what became a hostage situation

and a gunman, one gunman who took 11 police officers to take him down. and in all the shooting, in what may have been crossfire back and forth to resolve the hostage situation, rush and kill the gunman, 50 people were dead. 53 people were wounded. a staggering death toll and so many people in central florida and elsewhere have spent this day wondering where is the name of our loved one? is our loved one alive at all? have you seen the name on the list of injured? have you seen the name on the list of those in critical condition? earlier today, the president addressed the nation. this exists as a peculiar set of circumstances. the president described it as both a hate crime, as it was against a -- one individual

group of people in america -- and an act of terrorism at the same time. nbc's kerry sanders is in ft. pierce, florida, where he's been gathering what he can outside the terrorist's apartment complex. kerry. >> reporter: well, brian, the search for answers to understand whether this gunman acted alone or whether he worked in concert with anybody else. the fbi and the federal authorities are telling us thus far what they have discovered is this appears to be the case of a lone wolf. but nonetheless, they are at the apartment complex here and also a short distance away at the gunman's parents' home. you can see a large number of authorities that are there, lawmen from the fbi, from the state department of florida law enforcement as well as representatives from the local sheriff's office taking out pieces of evidence in bags and boxes looking at what eventually

will be examined inside a lab to determine whether there may be something -- we're not exactly sure, but there may be computers there, something that will give digital fingerprints to help explain whether this is the case of a lone wolf. here at the home where he lived, this is apartment, i believe it's apartment number 107, it's around the corner. the authorities have not told us whether they will be able to get inside yet, hearing there could possibly be booby traps as early as 8:30 this morning when the authorities traced back his address, they evacuated most of this apartment complex. so folks who live here have been told that they need to leave and they'll find a place to spend the night. tomorrow, they'll find out whether they can return here. again, the authorities hoping to find out if there is some sort of connection between omar mateen, the gunman, or what happens somebody else. the atf has told us that the guns were purchased in the last week.. now, the distance from here to

the pulse nightclub is about 120 miles. there are other people in this area who tell us that that is not too far of a drive for the pulse. it was that kind of draw. so people in this area also would attend that nightclub. why he chose to go from here to there remains a mystery. but we do know just a short distance from here is the islamic center of ft. pierce. and according to the imam there, omar mateen was a regular who would show up three, four times a week. he generally, they say, would arrive late just as prayers were beginning he would arrive shortly thereafter. the imam says he did have a close relationship with him, but he did know the family. he knew the parents. he had visited their home. he had known the family even closer when omar mateen's sister was getting married. they're from afghanistan, he says. he says they're particularly close to a belief which would be more in line with the northern

alliance rather than the taliban. but, of course, there have been some reports that nbc news is reporting, as well, that there are recordlings of his father talking about sympathy towards the taliban. whether that was passed from his father to his son is unknown. this is what the imam had to say to us in a lengthy interview. >> for a leader and that perhaps you're his leader. where did you go wrong? where did he get this crazy idea? >> look, he is a person, he goes to howard and then he become a killer. everybody who is -- he has been to some high school, to the principal of the high school tell him to do this? 150 people are coming and then the -- and if the people go to other places and there is no problem, this is not the problem of the mosque.

>> so the question is, where was he radicalized if he was, indeed, following some twisted belief that the koran told him to do this. the ee mom specifically saying he did not learn it there. we talk about whether they talk about homosexuality and he says, look, the koran says it is a sin but so is drinking and we don't focus on that and we certainly don't tell people to act on that. interestingly, in our discussion, i asked him about how this is becoming politic politicalsized and whether he had ready for it. one of the candidates for president, donald trump, has said he would like a ban temporarily on those coming in to the united states. his response caught me off guard. >> donald trump is running for president and he told me he wants to ban muslims, at least temporarily. what do you think of that? >> i don't think that america

has a -- a lot to do something like that. >> so what do you believe, will it be p on oliticized and what do you believe if donald trump becomes the next president possibly? >> for us, it's not a big difference between donald trump and headquartillary clinton. >> would you like to see trump as our next president? >> in the sense that if the people are angry at us, we muslims, then an anger of the people towardses muslim is decreasing by the presidency of donald trump, let him be the president. the anger of the majority will decrease. i don't think it will be that much scary and then -- muslim as the people think. it will have some good effect, too. >> interestingly, the imam tells us that the fbi in recent years has, indeed, visited the mosque there, spoken to the ee mom,

spoken to other members. generally, he said that's happened the last two or three years following other national events that involved questions about islamic terrorism. however, as we know, omar mateen is a name known to the fbi. but the ee mom says no agent ever stopped by to ask him about the gunman. does he now wish that the fbi had done that? he says yes, he wonders why they didn't. right now at the islamic center, they are breaking a fast and returning to prayers. this would be the fourth prayers of the day. we were told potential the gunman's mother would show up and give a statement, but thus far, she has not spoken to anybody. >> swg, kerry, wishing the fbi asked you with a guy is one thing. being concerned enough about a guy to inporm the fbi, mowing the fbi is sniffing around and calling him in for questioning

is quite another. >> indeed, brian. i mean, the bottom line here is, the ee mom says that he saw nothing that would tell him that this gunman was going to be radicalized, that he was radicalized, that he had any violent tendencies. he found him to be somebody who was rather muscular, somebody who he said he went to the gym regularly, and we have heard members of the gym speaking in general terms about some of those at the gym using steroids, which as you know can affect somebody's mental xaess and abilities, as you know, their moods specifically. but bottom line is, the ee mom says there was no tip-off for him and he along with his congress degree investigation says they are very sad and they hope there is no retaliation against him. >> still so many questions. thanks. let's go to jacob outside the hospital in orlando and let's think about the familyies who

have been asking about their loved ones there in the face of this death toll of 50. jacob. >> brian, you have families who are now coming out of the hospital who have been with their family members that were wounded. they were waiting for the operations to be finished and one family we just interviewed gave a horrify ztory. the father, angel cologne says he was awakenened, his pastor's wife saying there's been an incident, you need to go, you need to find out. when he got here at noon, his son was in an operation. he was undergoing surgery and couldn't see him. when he was able to see him a couple of hours later, his son, whose name is angel, tells this story, he saw the shooter drinking at the bar before the shooting. he, of course, didn't realize who it was until he saw the social media pictures later. when everything happened, when the shooting started, his son described is that he thought it was part of the hufk.

when he realized what was happening, he was shot in the back of the leg and fell down. this is what he's relating to his father. he says next it was a stampede of people that came over him and others and broke his leg. at that time, he says the the shooter came back and started shooting people who were laying on the ground and his son was shot two more times. and then, of course, after -- when the ambulances came, they carried him away and that's when the father came in, was able to finally see him hours after the operation. i asked him, among other things, what he said to his son when he first saw him. here was his answer. >> i saw him and i hugged him. i told him, in spanish, i -- -- god has given you another chance. that's what i told him. god has given you another chance. make life a better way. he goes, i know. i know, dad. i know.

>> did he know at the time that it was an isis-inspired attack? >> no, i don't think he did. i think they actually just thought somebody got crazy in the bar and started shooting like crazy. because i look at the news and that's what they're kind of finding out. >> does he know now? >> yeah. >> he does? >> yeah. >> does he have reaction to that? >> no. >> he was happy, laughing around and everything. still under the influence of percocet because they had to give him some percocet for the pain. but he's doing good. he's got a lot of support. the whole family was there. >> and by family, you say sisters, he has a number of sisters. >> three. >> oh, this being one of them? >> this is the smallest, here. and is all the sisters. and -- >> got it. so is he going to school or

what's his situation? >> no. he works. he lives in winter haven, but he works here in orlando. >> so, again, we're talking about a person who was wounded, angel colon, shot in the back of the right leg and later in the left leg and the hand and who survived and will be here at least a week, his father says. >> and in case after case, we have met through television these families, the survivors, the relatives, they're all nice people, life was cruising along. they had a loved one go to a bar on a saturday night and then everything came to a halt. still unknown, jacob, is how the this guy got an ar-15 into a bar and, yet, managed to sit at the bar and have a drink with that large a weapon concealed. i just -- unless he stowed it somewhere or went back out and came back in, it's one of the mysteries of this case.

and it will take a witness to answer that question. jacob rascone outside the hospital, thank you for your reporting and introducing us to angel's family. jim is standing by at the white house where earlier today the president addressed the nation. hey, jim, good evening. >> good evening, brian. there's quite a large demonstration right across pennsylvania avenue from the north lawn at lafayette park. a few minutes ago, they broke into a reducing rendition of the star-spangled banner which ended with a huge round of applause and cheers. obviously in solidarity with their brothers and sisters down in orlando who were killed in this mass shooting. today, we saw a very somber president go into the briefing room and to give a speech because, after all, this is the

16th time that he's had to make remarks, address the nation following a mass shooting and this one, of course, the most devastating in america's history. in a statement today, he talked about being in solidarity, the grief and the outrage and the is resolve that everyone feels after this mass attack. and he actually, too, revealed some information about the investigation itself saying, there's no definitive determination as of yet as to a motive and they're still searching to see if there was any inspiration or association with this shooter and any kind of terrorist organization. and tonight, from u.s. law enforcement officials, we're being told that so far, no indication that mateen was in touch with anybody overseas, nothing to indicate this was a direct attack, no sign than

anyone else involved in the attack. and in the president's speech, he didn't get preachy about gun control, but said this is another example to obtain these kind of lethal weapons. and there's something about where america is and he suggests we need to be headed in another direction. shortly after his remarks today with, too, just minutes after, the flag over the white house was lowered to half-staff and the president has canceled his political event scheduled for wednesday in green bay, wisconsin, with hillary clinton. and there is some speculation that he may even cancel some trips to the carlsbad cav earns in new mexico and yosemite national park in colorado before

the end of this week, brian. and, obviously, the the president is being abreast of the investigation, but, again, so far, according to the president himself and law enforcement officials, this still appears to be a loan wolf attack. >> jim, at the white house on this dark, sunday evening across america. carlos perez was kind enough to talk to us early in the morning. he is among the survivors of this and was at a vigil memorial this evening. carlos, i'm told your friend, jeff, was there and had posted on facebook he was shot, was hiding in the bathroom. what have you been able to find out about him? >> so one of his family members got on his facebook account and

posted that he was in stable condition. i do want to correct you. he put that he was in the club, got shot and was bleeding. >> and what does stable condition for him mean? >> i'm not sure because it's very limited communication going on. again, just one of the family members got on and said he was in stable condition and that even the hospital is not telling them much. >> because of privacy, i guess? >> i'm not sure. >> okay. did you know anyone else there? >> no, i did not. >> had you been there -- are you a regular or had you been there before? >> i'm straight ask i have lots of gay best friends. so he's gone there a handful of times. this is something that was definitely not expected at all. >> so you know this place as -- for what it was designed to be by the founder, hey, a safe

adviser with the terrorist project. she's a former cia analyst and is with us in washington. tara, we've been asking all number of people the same question. and that is how can you possibly go at preventing what happened today, this kind of fiendish dual crime and what is obviously a terrorist attack? obviously, in this case, it was one individual. which means it may have been a loenl wolf and these are the types attacks that law enforcement find particularly difficult to prevent because there are had a lot of people and we don't know who he was in touch with. but what's important is ramping up the resources that fbi has to monitor sources on their individual radar screen.

so more resources for law enforcement, intelligent officials connecting the information. and really a big part of it is fighting counterextremism online. that's part of what my organization is focused. >> how do you crush an idea,en especially an open marketplace like the internet? >> the tech companies have had a lot of pressure on them in order to take down some of these messaging and organizations like my own and in the u.s. government work on countering the narrative. to be frank, you know, americans, we're not necessarily the best one toes create that counternarrative, but part of it is creating partnerships on the ground with these countries and in this region that can help

creative narratives and create programs to undermine the message of programming who have been very good at what they do, reaching out to disinfranchise people who are vulnerable to their messaging. >> and with regard to the fbi having more resources for them, a lot of people think through data mining we've cut away too much at our freedoms as it is. how, other than that, would the fbi have known this was brewing in this guy's life? well, there are a few things. just like with any sort of intelligence problem, you don't want to rely on one piece of intelligence. you don't want to put all your investment into one area. both monitoring groups overseas, people in their local communities domestically need to be aware of what people are doing. . and in terms of the fbi and the technology side of the equation,

there have been some difficulties and i don't know in this case, we don't have enough information to say what was that play on the technology side. but law enforcement and fbi director has been quite up front about this saying they have had trouble because of encryption in terms of moner toring individuals' communications. it's a challenge and it's one that i don't think we've fully sorted out here. but these are all challenges for law enforcement. there's not one silver bullet to solving this problem. out will be a conversation of the narrative and the fight overseas militarily. the taking back of territory that we see going on in parts of falluja and syria. that's part of the equation, as well. >> overseas in that region, after the dual wars we've been through, what is the inch sentive to help the united states? >> well, i mean, basically, in

order to get people on our side in this fight, we need to show that we have a clear oraled vision, we ned to show the values that we represent. i think one of the struggles for the policies we've had overseas, if we don't have the countermessage heing, if we don't have the local partners, the territory, the military part of this is not going to be effective in and of itself. it's a holistic strategy. it's not going to.happen overnight. it's changing the mind of ching and generational change, as well. and i be the state department has a new office set up, as well. run by a former -- you know, someone from sperm forces once again. they're basically set up to be an interagency focused on this. there are agents like mine, the counterextremist project and a

president can hear what happens in lafayette park across the street in the upstairs port of the white house. and the answer, according to all the available evidence all these years is yes, they can. less than pleasant some nights and depending on the cause, but on a night like this after what this country and what the city of florida has been through, it's probably a welcome sound. former mayor of orange county mel martinez is joining us. a county executive, maybe, but not a mayor. the point is orange county is the county surrounding orlando, florida. and senator martinez, my question to you is i asked bill nelson this same question. why orlando, florida?

>> brian, i've been asking myself that all day long. it's hard to believe and as i've talked to friends and neighbors all through the day, it just seems like a very unlikely place for this to have happened. this is at a nightclub that, frankly, i think the lgbt community coming together is very understandable, but it's also a place i remember members of my political staff when i was a candidate for senate, gay and straight both going there to enjoy. it's a very enjoyable b nightclub that people in this community have enjoyed for years. so it's tragic to think of it happening in our community. it just doesn't seem right. but, you know, these events, they don't have a lot of rationale behind them, it doesn't seem, except hatred and a desire to disrust the lives of people with a misguided agenda. >> you're absolutely right.

in that respect, it fits the definition of terrorism. we know it fits the definition of a hate crime because of who it targeted and who he went after to kill. but it's the definition of terrorism and it depresses people because you think if it can happen there on a random saturday night, and look at this death toll, look at what it's done to the families in that community. how are we ever going to stop this kind of thing, especially these lone actors? >> it's not going to be easy. this is a very, very difficult ebbmy we're up against because of the asemester metrical nature of it. and so they're not going to those events that are well protected examine well guarded, but to a place like this which, frankly, i don't know that we can ever completely protect ourselves, but i think what we have to do is, again, look at the root cause of isis and the root cause of this idea logical

fervor and continue to move after this and continue to try to defeat them. what originated as an ideal could be extinguished by extinguishing those who perpetrate the idea.. when you have these extremists essentially running a large swath of the middle east. >> on the other side of the coin, this guy somehow got an ar-15 inside a bar. i've been saying to our guests all night long, if you live in tel aviv, jerusalem, you're used to pat-downs and metal detector wands. as you go into stores. >> well, i can, you know, we've given up bits and pieces of our individual liberties as we go through airports and other

things. i've always been concern about the data minding that we've stopped doing. i've been concern about not interrogating people, but opting to simply eliminate them through drone strikes through interrogation, we can always find a lot of information. so i think the defense of our nation needs to be a part of what they take kout of this tonight. i can't forget how proud i am of the first responsers here in orange county and obviously the fbi, as well.. but the response was courageous and tremendous and timely and very fortunate, also, that this particular site was not a half a mile, just a few blocks from orlando health, which is a trauma one sort of which center which i think has been

and as we've been saying all night, our condolences, watching this from a distance as we have been been. the inevitable political reaction to this, kelly o'donnell in had our news room with that. kelly. >> i certainly appreciate senator march teen eps aez politics, but there is an update to tell you about from the donald trump contain. he had planned to go on with visit to schedule new hampshire tomorrow. he will bill he's going to postpone that promising voters in new hampshire he was be back soon, but he will still deliver the state to deliver a speech. a speech that was supposed to be an anti- cliclinton speech talk

about many attacks on bill and hillary clinton and their way of life. that he will in most events, not covered in many of them talks about his views on foreign policies, especially with respect to isis, terrorism and violence in this. that, of course, will give you a much more subdued setting without a crowd and he can be on record. also important because hillary clinton is proceeding with his schedule, she will be in clean clone and she will be talking about these tomorrow. the donald trump took to twitter quite a bit today, also the put out a lengthy statement outstandinging his concerns and a top official for the hillary clinton campaign said what happens today requires a seriousness that donald trump did not present in the way he

responded today and a self-congratulatory style. so the campaigns are still going back and forth. the president and house speaker paul retire indicate that flags should be lowered to half-staff. there was a the order from the president, of course, involved got buildings. the order from the speaker, of course, covers the u.s. capital. trump pros will also have their flags lowered. we have seen the politics of this has moved through different dimensions of the tragedy. the president came out and spoke about the public today talking about this as an act terror, an act of can you do anything in

these sort of large scale attacks have become updated. he will receive the presidential daily briefing with the fbi director and the homeland security secretary president with him, also with the deputy attorney general. now loretta lynch, the attorney general, had been traveling to china to attend is cyber security conference. she is returning to be here in washington. we also know vice president biden canceled his lans to appear and speak in miami ahead of debbie wasserman schultz. so there is a poll cast upon politics, but it has not reduced or diminished some of the points where there is a lot of tension, fighting and competition. but it does change the way candidates can campaign. it also changes the way they community and in a very typical way that we've come to see

resulted in 50 deaths and 53 wounded. a harrowing situation and in our era of social media and texting and the like, a lot of people, a horrifying number of people were in touch in realtime as we all are with family members, only this was dire. there was no way they could help their trapped family members who could hear the gunfire and the approaching violence. one account that's received some attention today is by a mother named nina justice who talked about her son, eddie, who is a victim of the shooting. >> i called him back and he didn't answer so then he called me back and said there was shooting in the club and he was texting me at the same time. so i got the text after i talked to him and he said call the police. so i called the dispatcher and reported there was a the shoog

quietly radicalized by all accounts on his own, how are we going to prevent this kind of thing from happening because you can get that same reaction, a christian, a ju, what have you? >> exactly. i think that's what's important to keep in mind. this could have been anybody. there are a number of different reasons why he could have done what he did. it's a horrible tragedy and i think today is the time when we should be holding the victims and their families and not focussing on this man who committed these acts of violence that nobody is going to condone. the council of islamic americans hav have has come out with a strong statement. and our communities need to work together to build more harmony, interface dialogue and more understanding on diverse sexualities and genders that exist in this country. and people like the shooter, you know, are threatened by that. they're threatened by the
