"first look" is up next. it's wednesday, june 15th. right now on "first look" -- breaking overnight. a 2-year-old boy is taken from his family by an alligator at disney's grand floridian resort as his father tried to rescue him. we have new developments in the investigation of the orlando shooter and whether his current wife could have prevented the terror attack. plus, trump responds to

president obama's rebuke of the front-runner. thank you. florida officials are frantically searching for a 2-year-old boy who was dragged into the lake by the alligator. the attack occurred near the grand floridian resort at walt disney world last night. at least 50 officers are involved in the search which is based in the seven seas lagoon area and it happened in front of the boy's parents. nbc's sarah dallof joins me from lake buena vista. this is heart breaking, so what's the latest in this? >> reporter: good morning, betty. at this hour, more than 50 law enforcement officers and an alligator trapper and two marine units are continuing to search for that little boy. now last night, he was reportedly wading in a foot of water with his dad when the alligator attacked. the dad tried to wrestle him away from the gator but he was unsuccessful. the dad sustained a minor injury himself. law enforcement meanwhile said the search will continue until the little boy is recovered. >> as a father, as a grandfather, we are going to hope for the best in these

circumstances. but based upon my 35 years of law enforcement experience, we know that we have some challenges ahead of us at this time. >> reporter: that disney -- disney released a statement saying they're devastated by what has happened and pleming to continue -- and pledging to continue to support and help the family. they were asked if alligators had been seen in the area. their response was that there were no swimming signs posted around the lake. officials say there had been no reports of any similar attacks in recent memory. betty, back to you. >> all right, thank you so much for that. we do appreciate it. then investigators believe the current wife of omar mateen may have known her husband was planning the orlando attack and may have tried to talk him out. nbc news admitted she drove him to the nightclub on one occasion. officials are trying to decide if they should pursue charge

against him. nbc's miguel almaguer has more. >> reporter: nbc news has learned noor zahi salman the 30-year-old wife of gunman omar mateen says she tried to talk her husband out of the deadliest mass shooting in u.s. history. did you know your husband is a terrorist? the young mother to the couple's 3-year-old son was believed to be staying with her father in law. >> they were married for 3 1/2 years. she's a good girl. honest and sincere. >> reporter: salman was with her husband when he bought ammunition and a holster and officials familiar with the case say she once drove mateen to pulse because he wanted to scope out the club. >> oh, my god, people are getting shot. >> reporter: where he would later kill 49 people. the couple lived two hours from the crime scene in this modest apartment since 2012. salman, a u.s. citizen, had been married before. she met her ex-husband in ramallah where her family is

from, an arranged marriage that ended in divorce seven years ago. >> i have known her since she was 3 years old. >> reporter: the neighbors are devastated. >> after she got married and left, i had no idea what kind of a girl she is. all i know that she was a very good girl. >> we're also learning new details into the alleged gay tendencies mateen may have exhibited. this is what his ex-wife said to cnn's don lemon last night. >> he did have a different side of him that he could not open up to his father about. the fact that he liked to go to nightclubs. the fact that he loved to drink. it doesn't surprise me that he might be gay. it doesn't surprise me that he was leading two totally different lives and he was in such deep conflict within himself. >> joining us from orlando is blake mccoy.

can you tell us about the investigation into mateen's current wife. >> good morning. all along, authorities have said that there is a possibility they could file charges in this case and they're zeroing in on that wife, noor zahi salman. she's 30 years old. the two met on a dating site and they have a young child together. now, authorities are concerned with what she knew and her failure to tell them about it. as you just heard in miguel's piece there, she was with him when he bought ammunition and a holster and also drove him to pulse nightclub on at least one occasion to scope out the case before the attack. now, she apparently tried to talk him out of conducting an attack but never alerted authorities. fbi agents we can tell you visited the home of her parents in northern california yesterday as part of the investigation, but as far as when charges could come down authorities say it's more important that they conduct a thorough investigation than a speedy one. betty? >> all right, thank you so much for that. meanwhile, the 27 of the 53

injured in the shooting remain hospitalized. six are still listed in critical condition and at least one is profoundly ill. one survivor, a 20-year-old, carter, lost multiple friends. she was one of the victims held hostage in path room with the shooter. yesterday, she read from a poem she wrote, expressing the emotional weight of being alive while her friends are not. >> the guilt of feeling grateful to be alive is heavy. wanting to smile about surviving but not sure if the people around you are ready. i feel guilty about screaming about my legs in pain. because i could feel nothing. like the other 49 who weren't so lucky to feel this pain of mine. the guilt of feeling lucky to be alive is heavy. >> a gofundme page to support the victims is at $4 million. now to a political firestorm ignited by the orlando massacre. president obama hitting donald

trump like never before, blasting trump as dangerous and a rare -- in a rare show of anger that was in sync with hillary clinton's repudiations of the presumptive nominee. kristen welker has more. >> reporter: after donald trump called for expanding his muslim ban, president obama lashing out like never before. >> where does this stop? are we going to start treating all muslim americans differently? >> reporter: a speech billed as an update on the fight against isis turned into a tirade against trump. the president didn't hide the fact that trump is getting under his skin. citing trump's digs at mr. obama for refusing to talk about radical islam. >> islamic radicalism and that's a very, very important term, a term that the president refuses to use. >> reporter: the president answering. >> it's political talking point. and if we fall into the trap of painting all muslims with a broad brush, and imply that we are at war with an entire

religion, then we are doing the terrorist's work for them. >> reporter: the sharp rebuke coming at the same time as hillary clinton delivered her own shots at times sounding like they were reading from the same script. >> so there's no manic to the -- magic to the phrase radical islam. >> is donald trump suggesting that there are magic words that once uttered will stop terrorists from coming after us? >> reporter: clinton also defending her former boss after this trump suggestion about the president's reaction to the orlando attack. >> there are a lot of people that think he doesn't want to get it. a lot of people think he doesn't want to know about it. >> he went on tv and suggested that president obama is on the side of the terrorists. >> reporter: the tag team a preview of the onslaught trump is facing in the fall. >> and late last night, trump hit back. >> i watched president obama today.

and he was more angry at me than he was at the shooter. the level of anger, that's the kind of anger he should have for the shooter and these killers that shouldn't be here. >> now that came shortly before trump raised eyebrows when he questioned if soldiers may have been responsible for reconstruction funds lost during the iraq war. >> iraq. crooked as hell. how about bringing baskets of money, millions and millions of dollars and handing it out? i want to know who are the soldiers that had that job? because i think they're living very well right now, whoever they may be. >> a trump spokesperson clarified his remarks saying he was referring to iraqi soldiers. the democratic primary is officially over, after washington, d.c., held its nominating contest and hillary clinton won over bernie sanders, 79% to 21%. the primary results came shortly

after clinton and sanders held a private face to face meeting at a washington, d.c., hotel in an effort to unify the party. that meeting lasted well over an hour and a half and both campaigns hailed it as a positive step forward. they put out statement that read in part, sanders and clinton agreed to continue to work to continue the progressive agenda to adopt an aggressive platform. the clinton camp said, both had a positive discussion on unifying the party and that clinton had quote congratulated sanders on the campaign he's run and said she appreciate and his strong commitment to stopping trump in the general election. no word yet on whether sanders will drop out of the race and formally back her ahead of the democratic convention. the judge is pulled from a new sex abuse trial. it's 10 past the hour as the
