searching for a 2-year-old boy believed to have been dragged into the water by an alligator. the sheriff's office says the call came in before 9:30 last night at the grand floridian resort and spa. the family was relaxing near a sandy beach area when the reptile attacked. >> it's my understanding the father was nearby and the child was playing in the water, just a foot or so into the water. and the alligator came up and attacked. >> so he saw this happen? >> yes. the father at some point struggled to try to get his son and was not successful and then alerted others to try to assist him in the process. >> let's bring in nbc's sarah dallof live from lake buena vista. what else are authorities saying? >> reporter: good morning, jonathan. you have 50 law enforcement officials and two marine units frantically searching for this little boy.

you heard the sheriff say it happened, horrifying in front of his family as he was playing in the water. the father trying to wrestle that little boy from the alligator. the father sustaining a minor injury as he did so. the gator is described between four to seven feet in length. officials acknowledge that the search under these dark conditions is difficult, but they say they're committing to recovering that child. >> as a grandfather, we're going to hope for the best in these circumstances. but based upon my 35 years of law enforcement experience, we know that we have some challenges ahead of us at this time. >> reporter: and disney released a statement saying they are devastated by what has happened. they say they will continue to help the family who was vacationing here from nebraska. meanwhile, officials say there are no reports, no problems of this sort in the area in recent memory. jonathan, back to you.

>> nbc's sarah dallof, thanks. nearby the investigation into the orlando massacre continues and now we're learning more about the gunman's wife. nbc news has learned that 30-year-old noor zahi salman has told investigators she tried to talk her husband omar mateen out of committing the attack. federal agents tell nbc news she was with him when he bought ammunition and a holster. she told the fbi she drove him to pulse at least once because he wanted to scope out the nightclub. authorities are considering filing criminal charges against mateen's wife for failing to tell them what she knew before the attack, but no decision has been made. since the shooting, salman has been reportedly been staying at the home of mateen's father who was asked about his daughter in law last night. >> how many times has the fbi spoken to you? >> well, that's up to him. >> did she tell you that she had taken omar to the pulse nightclub? >> sir, sir, i don't have any

information. >> you have told some of the other news agencies that she was interviewed by the fbi and that she knew about the attack and tried to stop the attack. >> that's all -- that's all -- they make up. >> an fbi spokesman has confirmed to nbc news that three agents had visited omar's relatives in california. at last check, at least 33 victims are still hospitalized. during a news conference yesterday, some of the survivors talked about what they experienced during the shooting. nbc news gabe gutierrez has the latest. >> i still can't believe it myself. >> reporter: when the rampage began, orlando torres was trapped. >> we heard a pow, pow, pow. it caught my attention. >> reporter: he and a female friend hid, propping themselves on a toilet inside one of the nightclub's four restrooms so the gunman would not see their

legs. >> at this point, did you think you were going the survive? >> no. >> reporter: mateen was calm, that he demanded the u.s. stop bombing isis in syria and then he heard mateen wash his hands in the middle of the bloodshed. >> i thought my life was over. >> reporter: do you believe this was motivated more by anti-american or anti-gay sentiment? >> he was killing two birds with one stone, but he killed 49 with one stone. >> reporter: the emerging stories of survival, remarkable. colon was shot three times. >> i can hear the shotguns closer and he shoots the girl next to me. and i'm just there laying down, i'm thinking, i'm next, i'm dead. >> reporter: patients carter was held hostage when she heard him speaking arabic, but not sure to whom. >> he said, are there any black people in here? i don't have a problem with black people.

rappers. he also warned of surprises for the euro 2016 soccer tournament taking place in france. three people have been taken into custody for questioning following the attack. abballa had been sentenced to prison in 2013 for being involved in recruiting work network, but was released after six months. now to politics and the democratic primary season ends with a lopsided win for clinton. she wins in washington, d.c., 79 to 21. nbc news is awarding her 46 of 46 delegates and she leads bernie sanders by nearly a thousand delegates. last night, bernie sanders and the presumptive nominee met at the capitol hilton. they were joined by podesta and jane sanders and jeff weaver. they talked for more than an hour and a half and afterwards issued nearly identical

statements touting their positive discussion. areas of agreement like raising the minimum wage and the danger of donald trump. but where hillary clinton spoke of unifying, sanders stopped short. he did not suspend his campaign or endorse her. earlier in the day the senator let it be known he had some demands for the party going forward. >> i do believe that we have to replace the current -- the democratic national committee leadership. we need real electoral reform within the democratic party. and that means among many, many other things open primaries. we need same-day registration and that means that anybody in this country can walk in and get registered to vote on the day of a primary or a caucus. we also need obviously to get rid of super delegates. the idea that we had in this

case 400 super delegates pledged to a candidate some eight months or more before the first ballot was cast is to my mind absurd. >> though he never uttered the name donald trump, president obama forcefully responded to the presumptive republican nominee yesterday. after meeting with the national security council, the president had a searing condemnation of trump's call for him to use the words radical islamic terror in the wake of the attack in orlando or resign. >> there's no magic to the phrase radical islam. it's political talking point. it's not a strategy. that kind of yapping has not prevented folks across government from doing their jobs. but we are now seeing how dangerous this kind of mindset and this kind of thinking can be. we now have proposals from the presumptive republican nominee for president of the united states to bar all muslims from
