commander-in-chief. >> reporter: so that's what you've been hearing day in and day out from hillary clinton that donald trump is temperam t temperamentally unfit to be president of the united states. we've also seen news on gun control today. hillary clinton doing an interview with the "huffington post" where she says to donald trump of this issue of whether or not people on the terrorist watchlist should be able to legally buy guns in the united states, she says, quote, welcome to the cause. this is something i've been doing for a long time. this issue has, of course, tied up some people on the hill, rob portman seeming to go back and forth on this issue. >> the wisconsin poll out of likely voters, clinton is up by nine points over donald trump. it will be interesting to see how that case falls out. ca from hampton roads, virginia, my colleague, kate snow picks things up now. good afternoon to you. thank you, thomas.

new details this past hour as investigators piece together events of the shooting in orlando. authorities just briefed the media. there were two big headlines as they pour through omar mateen's electronic media, they said there was no evidence mateen was contemplating another target. they don't believe he was a patron at any other gay nightclubs in orlando. new this hour, video of the gunman from six years ago. it's a bit ran don. this is omar mateen appearing six years ago in an award winning documentary, of all things, about the bp oil spill. the effects of the attack ongoing on capitol hill as we speak, the filibuster for three hours and 39 minutes now to force some sort of action on gun critical. let's begin with the latest of the investigation. nbc has learned the wife of omar
12:02 pm
mateen was worried when her husband walked out the door saturday night that he was going to attack the pulse nightclub but she said nothing. nbc's pete williams, has the latest on the investigation developme developments. what did they tell us just this last hour? >> i think you hit the main points. one of the other ones was some survivors of the attack said as recently as yesterday at the news conference at the hospital that they thought somebody else must have been involved in that sho shooting, they didn't think one person could get off all those rounds. they thought mateen seemed to be talking to someone else during the shooting. today, the fbi's man at the news conference said, no, they believe he acted alone and there's no indication he contemplated any other target. they also said they don't know of him patronizing any other gai clubs in orlando. many people have said they thought they saw him at the
12:03 pm
pulse nightclub in the weeks and months leading up to the sho shooting. some said he was there quite regularly and other people said they thought they saw him at other gay clubs and the fbi said they don't know of him going to any other clubs. >> pete williams following all of it for days, thank you so much. earlier today, omar mateen's father spoke and said better security at the pulse nightclub would have prevented the attack. >> i have a request from the nation that if any wants to appoirun a social club, they should have tight security, if they had good tight security, they would have eliminated my son, this would have been good and we wouldn't have this nightmare and these losses for the families. >> at that press conference with the father, our reporter joins us live where omar and noor
12:04 pm
mateen and his 3-year-old son lived. as we cover these tragedies, we often don't have so much access with the family of the shooter. the father has speak with reporters several times now, no? >> he has spoken several times in press conferences and done dozens of interview. i asked him why he's so keen about speaking to the media. he has been very open about it. he feels his son and his family are victims of terrorism just as much as those 49 innocent people killed at the pulse nightclub. he feels the way his son was radicalized, the fact isis managed to get through to him through its propaganda, what have you, all of those are factors that led his son to do what he did. he feels he, too, is a victim. he constantly says he is receiving threats from people telling him to leave the country and fears for his daughters'
12:05 pm
safety and feels one way for the country to feel his pain is by speaking to the media. there are questions about the relationship he had with his son. did he know his son was planning something like this and something he repeatedly denies saying had he known his son was planning an attack or having problems he would have turned him in. more importantly, i asked him specifically whether or not he knew his son purchased those weapons, here's what he had to say. did you know your son bought those weapons? >> i wish i did know. i wasn't -- anything you heard from the news, i heard. i wasn't aware. >> reporter: what kind of relationship did you have with your son? you didn't know he bought a weapon? >> i had a relationship, he was living on his own and wasn't living here and once in a while coming to say hello. that's about it. he had his own life. >> reporter: he constantly reiterated he was not aware of what his son was doing when he was not at home. he said his son was an independent person, had a wife and 3-year-old son.
12:06 pm
we also asked him about noor, omar's wife and asked if she could have prevented this act. he said she was a sincere person and he loved her very much and wouldn't comment on information she knew at the time or prior to the attack. the information is significant, omar had a certain proficiency with weapons. when he was applying for his class license in florida we understand he scored as probably as high as you could. he was just a few points off of the very top mark you can get and that meant he had a certain degree of proficiency and accuracy with weapons. he was a security guard guard but his consistent testing at this range proved he was an above average shooter or excellent shooter and that will be an important piece for investigators as they try to determine what exactly happened inside the pulse nightclub. you're talking about 49 people being killed over several hours.
12:07 pm
they're also trying to determine how and when these individuals were killed having this information about his proficiency with weapons will shed light on that investigation. you heard from pete williams the father reiterated today noor is not at this location and would not comment where she is but repeatedly said he has not spoken to her in the last 24 hours and he no longer knows where noor and their 3-year-old son are at this point. >> investigators have said they are looking potentially at charges against her but nothing on that front yet, right? >> reporter: that's correct. i posed that question with omar mateen's father and asked what would happen if she is charged. he would not comment and said that would be a difficult situation and would want his grandson to stay here. right now the focus is on noor in the sense what did she know
12:08 pm
and what could she have preve prevented and what role did she play in the lead-up to the attack. law enforcement are interviewing hundreds of people that knew him and family relatives and friends. they certainly have expanded the circle or scope of the investigation to try and get a better sense who he was and who are the people that nay have known about this or his background on tendencies in the lead-up to saturday night's attack. >> thanks so much. what would keep someone from turning in a family member making threats? joining me the author of "dying to kill," the allure of suicide terror. i always wish it was different circumstances when we talk. you wrote and article, doctor, about "the daily beast." you said 82% of the time, people knew something about a lone wolf
12:09 pm
attack before it happened and 64% of the time, family members knew about the attack because the attacker actually told them about it. those are shocking numbers. why don't people say anything? >> a lot of people don't say anything for various reasons. one reason is they worry if they come forward they themselves will be suspects. another worry might be that they don't trust the police or don't trust the fbi. another worry has been not just self-implicating themselves but what is going to happen if they're wrong? what if they misinterpreted something that was said. we want to make a distinction between people making statements that might be out of context and someone says something in a fit of anger versus what noor did, where she went with her husband to go purchase the weapons. >> right. we know that. we also know she has told investigators she suspected he might be up to something, thought about trying -- tried to talk him out of it and didn't.
12:10 pm
could she have been in denial, though? is it possible she didn't realize how big this would be, what a terrible tragedy it would be? >> she may not have anticipated the extent of 49 people being killed. that's why i'm saying there has to be a difference between someone making a statement like, i should do something! versus going to purchase a gun. i think part of the problem has been the framing, not you, kate, but the framing in the media, this is about political corre correctness. because the study i cited, i have a link to the original article. it's free so anyone an read it showed in studying terrorism, this is not a phenomenon associated with the muslim community or one particular group, all groups have the same statistics, because i can tell you, there's been a number of muslim family members, like the underwear bomber, omar, whose father contacted the cia in 2009
12:11 pm
to prevent that attack, versus someone like james nichols, who knew what his brother, terry nichols was up to before oklahoma city. when the presumptive republican nominee says this is something only in the muslim community not only is he wrong he demonstrates how ignorant he is about terrorism. >> let me ask you on another front. you've written two books about the allure of extremism and radicalization. from what we know today, do you think omar mateen was truly radicalized or a cover for other issues that he had? >> in the theory of psychology, there is something called concealment. there has been a lot of discussion about his own sexuality and in fact his ex-wife just recently gave an interview to don lemon on cnn that she thought he was gay. the question then becomes how does this make sense that someone that might think they're
12:12 pm
gay turns around and kills 49 gay people. the theory of concealment in psychology explains why. a lot of theory in bullying in every tv movie or film or even on "glee," the guy beating up the gay kids turns out to be gay and a lot of this is passing behavior. when it turns verbal to being physical is when they're about to be outed. we don't know in the weeks le leading up to this attack if maybe he felt people were about to discover his real identity. there's a lot of questions that remain to answer. >> how is that differewith call and claiming an allegiance to isis? >> this is the veil of us a then t tisty. if he generally wanted to make a pledge to isis, you do so ahead of time for example the french killer that killed the family yesterday made a video, uploaded the video. with pledges to isis, what we
12:13 pm
need to remember, that's only half the story. you can pledge to isis but then they have to accept your pledge. just saying you're part of isis doesn't mean you're automatically part of isis. thank you for your perspective. >> thank you for having me on the show. coming up, donald trump s p slips further behind hillary clinton in polls as his d disapproval rating rises. are we witnessing the unrafveling of his candidacy? >> and a 2-year-old boy dragged by an alligator into a lagoon while his father tries desper e desperately to rescue him. we'll have that for you live.

just wrapped up a midday rally in atlanta. for a guy that loves to talk about the polls, it is a rough day for donald trump. a cnbc poll finds 51% of americans disapprove of the way trump responds to the orlando sho shooting. president obama and hillary clinton got much higher marks. a "washington post" abc poll shows trump's unfavorable rating is now at 70%. our nbc news survey monkey poll has trump losing ground to clinton, her margin now seven points over donald trump. even worse from a bloomberg poll that includes the libertarian candidate, down by 12 points and he has a lead over combatting terrorist threats at home and abroad. joining us is katy. watching that rally it was largely dedicated to terrorism.
12:18 pm
maybe because of the poll we've been citing. is that where they think they can make an appeal? >> reporter: they have been able to capitalize on past terror events. people tended to go towards donald trump giving a lot of red meat and action and promising to protect folks. whether that changes is still unclear. these apostpolls indicate he's necessarily the one they're looking to right now. not a lot of approval in the way he handled orlando and the aftermath of orlando. another thing adding to this rough week of donald trump, governor hogan, a republican governor in a blue state now coming out and saying he will not vote for donald trump. he also joins the governor of massachusetts who said he would not vote for donald trump. both of those governors are governors that chris christie helped get elected.christie's in
12:19 pm
that matter not necessarily as beneficial as the presume campaign might have hoped. they talk about being able to turn blue states red. this is an indication that might not be as easy as they hope. >> that just coming in to nbc news katy tur. appreciate it. hillary clinton just wrapped up an event in hampton, virginia, where she took on donald trump with a new line of attack. let's get to casey. a new attack on trump's idea of banning muslims from to the united states. kasie. >> reporter: that's right. a community emeasured in t-- immeasured in the military and focus mrb m focus on national security and the speech of the one that so echoed president obama.
12:20 pm
we did have some new information from her today. take a look. >> as has been pointed out, the terrorist in orlando was not born in afghanistan, as trump cla claims. he was born in queens, new york, only miles away from where donald trump himself was born. a ban on muslims would not have stopped this attack. neither would a wall. i don't know how one builds a wall to keep the internet out. so not one of donald trump's reckless ideas would have saved a single life in orlando >> hillary clinton herself, of course, focused on banning assault weapons as part of a package of reform she says she wants pushed through and talked to sam stein of the "huffington post" about some of them, telling donald trump she welcomes him to this cause of trying to prevent assault weapons from landing in the
12:21 pm
wrong hands, of course, referring to that push to ban those people on the terrorist watchlist from also being able to buy firearms. kate, i have to tell you, big picture, this event is part of this sustained push to try to present hillary clinton in contrast with donald trump in tone, in approach, in substance all the way across the board. this was a conversation, a small conversation with a group of people invested in the military communities here. while you heard her there making some of the same remarks from a podium and she adapted them here to this new information. there's still not campaign signage at her events, just a placard that says "stronger together," to make sure that's the image she's presenting compared to donald trump in the wake of this tragedy. >> before i let you go, can i ask quickly about yesterday. last night, d.c. voted, hillary clinton won there. she meets with bernie sanders.
12:22 pm
it goes pretty well, we think? >> reporter: it seems to have gone pretty well. they both put out statements that put them close to being on the same page. bernie sanders did not come out and endorse hillary clinton. the question now, what will he do next? will he suspend his campaign? will he ultimately support her? i'm told they both are intere interested in policy, in policy specifics, so that helps explain why their meeting was as long as it was, 105 minutes long. the challenge for bernie sanders and democrats on both sides that i talked to privately concerned about bernie sanders staying in this race, will say he does really have a major opportunity here to convert what he created into a movement into something that lasts for quite a long time. he obviously has accomplished a significant amount, these consists sa consists -- these democrats say and has a lot of followers and
12:23 pm
if he waits too long, he could squander the opportunity and that may be a risk for him. >> thanks. we'll talk about that clinton-sanders subject later in the hour. president obama took republican lawmakers to task yesterday for supporting their presumptive nominee. >> when does this stop? the orlando killer, one of the san bernardino killers, the fort hood killer, they were all u.s. citiz citizens. are we going to start treating all muslim-americans differentidifferen differently? are we going to start subjecting them to special surveillance? are we going to start discriminating against them because of their faith? we've heard these suggestions during the course of this campaign. do republican official actually
12:24 pm
agree with this? >> joining me now, hugh hewitt, msnbc political analyst, the host of the hugh hewitt show on the salem radio network. nice to see you again. we just heard katy tur reporting the governor of maryland, the latest to say, i'm not with trump, not voting for him. a lot of republicans on the hill the last couple of days have actually been avoiding us and walking away as we tried to ask them questions about donald trump. you were on with brian williams on monday after trump gave his big speech on national security and talked about what happened in orlando. i heard from you some praise for donald trump. two days later, what are you thi thinking? >> i'm thinking the president opened the door for donald trump to come right back at him and recalibrate and reset the race. it's not good to lose larry hogan and charlie baker. the governors are extraordina extraordinariextraordinary ly gifts and popular in their states and very influential in
12:25 pm
their party and huge danger signals. at the same time, the president used a series of straw men as is his want, always sets up straw men and knocks them over, not focusing on what he said monday but what if he says this. to me, that gives the opportunity to say the final thing. president oba president obama's presidency is defined by six words, leading from behind. jvs. president obama is a terrible failure fighting isis. his abrupt withdrawal of troops from iraq in 2011 and secretary clinton's failure to renegotiate the force there. reignited the civil war and created isis land which metastasize to libya and created this nightmare problem for us which erupted in orlando, not just orlando, erupted in san bernardino, erupted around the world and happened in paris yesterday with a jihadi killing
12:26 pm
a french policeman and his girlfriend and terrorizing their child. it's all over the globe. president obama's head remains firmly fixed in the sand of global jihadism. donald trump has to just underscore his response and have his allies back him up on these. as of today, donald trump's numbers are not good. i have said from the beginning, this election will be decided in the fall depending on events that occur, like the horrible tragedy in orlando. i don't think i'm the only american, kate, who is very upset with the president, within 48 hours of a massacre, not talking about the victims, many of whom are fighting for lives, but in effect initiating a conflict with donald trump over things donald trump did not actually say on monday but things the president wished he had said so he could politicize them. >> to be fair, donald trump gave his speech first and hillary clinton on monday and it was yesterday, tuesday, ob was responding to him.
12:27 pm
can i move to gun control issues? trump says he will meet with the nra and he tweeted today saying he actually agrees with the idea of restricting guns for people who have been or are on a terror watchlist, a position gallup found 71% of americans think would be effective. the nra put out a statement r d reads in part the nra believes terrorists should not be allowed to purchase or possess firearms period and at the same time due process protections should be put on a terror watchlist are removed. you have the democrats filibu filibustering on the floor of the senate. and orrin hatch said maybe this is a moment we can work together. are we at a moment with a republican candidate saying this, maybe we could find one area of common ground? >> senator cornyn offered and amendment to this bill last year about watchlist protections. >> the democrats didn't think it
12:28 pm
went far enough. >> there is common ground but the democrats can't dictate terms because there are due process issues and second amendment issues. i'd point out i listened to secretary of state clinton's comments they were a snarky rehearsal anti-gun control people say about gun control measu measures. i don't get much involved in this debate because it is beyond my specific capacity. when secretary clinton said a wall would not keep out the internet and the son of afghans born in queens, she's advocating what most anti-gun control advocates say the law would not keep a gun out of this person's hands and diane fine feinstein'w she talked about with brian williams before i came on that would not have kept the gun out of this killer's hands -- >> because he has been removed from the watchlist. my point are we at a point where democrats and republicans can
12:29 pm
find common ground? everybody, including the nra is saying terrorists should not have weapons like these? >> i think the conine bill is that moment. if democrats will put down their posturing and their way or the highway, you could pass his bill and see if it works. it really does bother me we're doing this 48 hours after a massacre opposed to waiting to see what the bill language is and having a filibuster when john cornyn offered up a bill. if you have serious democrats things will get done and if you just have an issue, nothing will happen and right now looks like they just want an issue. >> talk radio host, hugh hewitt. >> thanks, kate. panic at the happiest place on earth, a toddler wading in shallow water at a disney world hotel snatched up by an alligator. we'll go live out to orlando for the very latest. if you ha typil airline credit card,

as we mentioned we are aw t awaiting a news conference at the top of the hour on the search for a toddler snatched off a beach by an alligator happening at the grand fluro fln resort at disney world. police do not believe the child surviv survived. >> there are eyewitnesses who certainly saw the child taken under the water and what have you. we know that happened. it certainly is not survivable at this point for him to have been submerged for this period of time. we know that this is a recovery effort at this point. >> all beaches, ferries and marinas at disney world are now closed until further notice. dive teams have been in the water along with boats using sonar. sara dollop is in orlando with details. sadness for what we know right now. anything at the top of the hour?
12:34 pm
>> reporter: you can see the sadness in the first responders fa faces. and the police chief actually choking up at points how they would feel if their child was taken so suddenly. they had said there will be a news conference this evening and now the sudden announcement there will be one in 30 minutes leads us to believe they have significant developments they want to share with us. this is a horrific story. the little boy last night was wading into about a foot of water, about a foot from the beach. his dad right there, his mom nearby on a sandy area when the gator emerged and attacked him. his father i tried to wrestle him from the jyoufs the gator but wasn't strong enough. 50 law enforcement officers with boats and sonars and aerial c w crews and dive sonar have been looking for this little boy. they acknowledge this is a difficult task both physically

this is very rare. disney does not encourage gators in their park and fish and game tell you this. you have seen people build homes around the ponds and lakes. these gators crossing this time of year especially, they cross, go at night time, they haven't eaten for a long time or something like this, i dream about this whole thing right now, if i was a father, i don't know, he tried everything he could. it's a terrible incredible unbelievable thing that happened there. >> maybe the only positive is that it's a cautionary tale when people are visiting florida to be really careful. jack hanna, always good to talk with you, thanks so much. >> thank you. still ahead, democrats in the gnat now joined by republican pat toomey. that's bob casey from pennsylvania, they are hours into a filibuster, asking for tighter gun control legislation. we mentioned it in the last block. we will go out live to the

no-fly or a terrorism watchlist wouldn't be able to purchase weapons, how difficult is that legally to enforce or carry out? >> it's legally possible but the crux of the debate. to take a step back, remember, if you want to control this stuff, people talk about guns don't kill people, people kill people. no, a person with a gun kills people and from a regulatory and legal perspective, you're either dealing with the people or the guns. on the gun side, whether you will have some guns unavailable, a debate over assault style rifles. on the people side, what we've been discussing today on the terror watchlist the basic idea the people on this list already as terror suspects who can't get on planes also will not be able to get guns. we will put up this cornyn amendment this due process version. you would delay sales up to 72
12:48 pm
hours and then you need a court to get involved. the buyer, terror suspect in the eyes of the fbi get notice and have some opportunity for legal representation, a lawyer to deal with the court whether or not they should have their gun rights restricted. the stronger version of this would be to use the no buy list like the no-fly list like mostly democrats have pushed saying lets not go into the courts and have that process any time any individual wants a gun, let's have a strict rule and the default would be you don't get to buy a gun because you're on the terror watchlist and you appeal to the government to get off the list. two very different approaches about the same thing, a people oriented approach to restricting access to guns and trying to curve gun violence to the wrong people. >> i'm glad you explained the cornyn bill. that's what hugh hewitt was describing earlier in the hour. it's always about politics and some say it's not enough and too much. >> hugh hewitt says democrats

when you look at elected officials, elected republicans on capitol hill and elsewhere, two different camps. the people who are not talking about donald trump, the people who aren't responding to questions about it. and the people who are responding in a negative way. senator bob corker said he was discouraged about trump's campaign. maryland governor larry hogan coming out and saying he will not be able to vote for donald trump this fall. governor hogan is a republican in a very blue state, a state that may be on the battleground map for the trump campaign. you've heard trump himself talk about it as a place where you could go in and compete. the but the fact that you have governor hogan now saying he can't vote for donald trump, joining governor charlie baker of massachusetts, another republican governor saying he can't back trump. it's significant and interesting given both of their ties to

another governor -- chris christie of new jersey. hogan and christie have characterized themselves as very good friends. i was with hogan and christie during the primary. christie is obviously one of donald trump's closest allies, particularly when you look at the gubernatorial field. so if there was a sense among the trump campaign that perhaps christie could use some of his connections with these governors to try and bring them over to trump world, clearly that has proven not to be the case, kate. so these are just the latest examples, particularly with governor hogan of republicans concerned about trump's tone and rhetoric. you've heard him talking about this at his rallies in the last 24 hours. i was in greensboro last night. mocking this idea of people who don't like his tone. he's unphased right now. but i'm hearing from sources from now until the convention is a significant time for trump to prove to these guys on the fence

that they can come around and get behind him. >> lamar alexander from tennessee said that trump is not yet the nominee officially. is that a hint that there are some still holding on to the idea that maybe they can somehow prevent him from becoming the nominee? >> i think there's a sense, certainly among folks in the never trump movement, that come the convention, there could be a coup or a surprise. i feel like we've been talking about this for weeks. it's deja vu, the idea that some monumental thing could happen at the convention. what you heard from senator alexander, i think, was a sense that, a resistance to the idea that donald trump actually is the presumptive nominee. when he was pressed by the a.p. reporter, that trump is the nominee. senator alexander said, well, that's what you say. so hints or suggestions that perhaps there could be some kind of a fight.
