good morning, everyone. it is thursday, june 16th, i'm alex witt. it will be another emotional afternoon for president obama. he and vice president biden will visit orlando today to pay respects to the victims of the worst mass shooting in this country's history. the white house did not offer many specifics but said the president wants to meet with the families of those killed. we're told he'd like to spend time talking to first responders, doctors and nurses who acted to save lives. now to the takeover of the senate floor by democrats helping to force new measures on gun control. the filibuster led by senator chris murphy of connecticut started around noon yesterday and ended at 2:15 this morning. it lasted more than 14 hours with the help of 34 democrats, one independent, and two republicans. >> we couldn't proceed with business as usual. in the senate this week. and we couldn't do what we have largely done after mass shooting

after mass shooting. we couldn't go on and debate other issues and ignore the fact that the vast majority of americans, 80 to 90% want us to take this action and that it would be impactful. >> just before the senate adjourned, senator murphy tweeted, quote, i'm proud to announce after 14-plus hours on the floor, we will have a vote on closing the terror gap. meaning a ban on selling weapons to those on the terror watch list and universal background checks. also yesterday, senator joe manchin told our luke russert he planned to reintroduce the gun show loophole. it was the same measure that failed after the newtown and san bernardino shootings. and the senators considered reviving the bill after the

shooting at mother emanuel church which happened one year ago tomorrow. it's time to stand up for gun reforms. the boston globe striking a similar tone with this front page editorial. a picture of a rifle worth a thousand words along with three more, make it stop. as democrats press for action, it seems donald trump could be seeking new gun restrictions as well. the presumptive republican presidential nominee has summoned the national rifle association to discuss legislation saying quote, i will be meeting with the nra who has endorsed me about not allowing people on the terrorist watch list or the no fly list to buy guns. the nra responded said they're happy to meet with trump. our position is no guns for terrorist, period. due process and right to self-defense for law-abiding americans. trump continued to advocate for concealed carry in terms of the orlando shooting when speaking at a rally. >> if some of those great people that were in that club that night had guns strapped to their

waist or strapped to their an e ankle, and if the bullets were going in the other direction, aimed at this guy who was just open target practice, you have had a situation, folks, which would have been always horrible but nothing like the carnage that we all as a people suffered this weekend. this morning marks the one year anniversary of the donald trump presidential campaign and on his 365th day as a candidate, he spoke to a packed house of nearly 4,000 at the fox theater in atlanta. he picked up the endorsement of legendary university of georgia football coach vince duly and he continued to focus on terrorism and security issues talking about the foreign ideology of the u.s. born shooter in orlando. >> even if you had a small percentage of people coming in, thinking like this person who again was born here but his

parents weren't and his ideas weren't born here. his ideas were born from some place else. and you look at the beliefs of shari'ah, and it's called execution for things that you would say are like standard parts of life. we have people coming in and do not kid yourself, that's what they believe, that's what they want. that's what they practice. and we're taking these people in. >> that was an american born muslim. >> well, his father came in and his father is -- seems to be pretty radical, frankly. i have been watching that whole situation, if you look at the past he was pretty -- pretty tough. i think he probably believes this things that maybe are -- maybe not in our interests. >> and after donald trump stirred controversy for suggesting president obama has hidden motives in the fight against terrorism, trump

continued to push the conspiracy theory by linking to the article posted on a conservative news site about purported support for isis. it was a memo from august of 2012 with concerns that terror groups might gain support through u.s. aid to syria among the well publicized reasons that the u.s. hesitated about the involvement. regardless, trump wrote on twitter, media fell all over themselves criticizing what donald trump may have insinuated about the president but he's right. meanwhile, during the round table discussion yesterday, hillary clinton kept up the pressure on trump. contrasting her national security plans to his. >> his comments have become even more inflammatory in recent days. this approach isn't just wrong. it is dangerous. a ban on muslims would not have stopped this attack. neither would a wall. i don't know how one builds a wall to keep the internet out.

not one of donald trump's reckless ideas would have saved a single life in orlando. it's just more evidence that he is temperamentally unfit and totally unqualified to be commander in chief.ly at odds not only with the democrats, but with his own party. >> our leaders have to get tougher. this is too tough to do it alone. but you know what? i think i'm going to be forced to. i think i'm going to be forced to. our leaders have to get a lot tougher. and be quiet, please be quiet, don't talk, please be quiet. just be quiet to the leaders. because they have to get tougher, they have to get sharper, they have to get smarter. we have to have our republicans either stick together or let me just do it by myself. i'll do very well. i'm going to do very well, okay? i'm going to do very well. a lot of people thought i should do that anyway, but i'll do it very nicely by myself.

interview coming up on "morning joe" in a bit. a tragic ending in the search for a 2-year-old boy dragged into the water by an alligator at a disney resort in florida. authorities announced yesterday they have found the body they believe is that of lane graves. nbc news's kerry sanders has more. >> reporter: a nonstop search from the air, on the water and deep into the lake where divers and technicians used underwater son sonar, hoping to find signs of life and the gator that attacked. after 16 agonizing hours, heart break. >> the members of the orange county sheriff's office dive team located what was believed to be the remains of the deceased, the 2-year-old. >> reporter: it's this beach where 2-year-old lane graves was grabbed by an alligator, believed to be between four and seven feet long. witnesses say they saw the toddler dragged under while his parents and a staff lifeguard tried to snatch him back.

while posted signs at the lake say no swimming the orange county sheriff says the boy and his father were wading only a foot from the shore. there's no signage to suggest alligators live in the lagoon. should there be signs be warning, beware of alligators? >> one of the things that the walt disney world will work with the wildlife commission to decide what are the best practices. >> five alligators were pulled from the lake and so far, no evidence they were involved in the attack. alligator attacks on humans are extremely rare. even in the state like florida where there have been only 23 people killed since 1948. as word of the incident spread through the park, visitors were horrified at the news. >> never thought this could happen here. >> i feel so bad for the family. >> reporter: wildlife experts want know if it attacked because other tourists in the past have

reach the egyptair flight, now that the search team announced they have found the record. they told egyptian officials they locate some debris. flight 804 was on its way to cairo from paris on an overnight flight when it crashed with 66 people on board. previously leaked flight data indicated a sensor had detected a fire in the plane's nose. walmart is looking at layoffs and yesterday, janet yellin announced that the fed will hold steady on rates for now. louisa bojesen has more from london. are we likely to see a rate hike any time soon? >> it seems the market is thinking no hints, no hike. if you look at the futures they indicate we won't be getting a hike. that being this time around. there is speculation that they might hike in july although it's a very big might. she did leave the door open, janet yellin, for this to happen. but it seemed they scaled back on the expectations that had

been out there. they lowered the growth forecasts. they did signal again they're planning to hike this year. but a lot of people are now thinking they might hike once as opposed to twice which had been the market thinking heading into this event. so that's very much on the agenda with the central banks, what the fed is doing. as you mentioned walmart a big story making the rounds. they're cutting hundreds of office jobs and -- in around 500 locations. we're talking accounting jobs, invoicing jobs. a spokesperson is saying it will affect two to three associates per store for walmart. the people who are being let go or who are having their jobs taken from them, they're being offered other jobs, but these are more face to face with customers type jobs because the thinking is that if you know your customer, if you talk more to your customer, then you know what businesses want. and you know what the customer wants and you can perform a lot better. so that's the thinking behind this particular move. when looking at the accounting offices, what they'll do
