set to expire in about another week or so. they managed to find the cockpit voice recorder just in the nick of time before the pingers expired. however, there's yet another black box they need to find and that of course being the flight data recorder. they would love to be able to hone in on that in the wreckage field. that brings us to the point of what they were talking about late yesterday, they found two locations where they think they have identified the wreckage from egyptair flight 804 there in the mediterranean. the question will be, where is the flight data recorder? it is also damaged like the cockpit voice recorder. that's critical. they need to not only hear what the conversations were like inside the coke pitd but see what the plane was doing and how it was performing. the flight data recorder contains 1,000 perimeters of information about engine performance and wing configuration and any electrical systems were failing and engine systems were failing, all of that, computer systems, et cetera, all of that should be
7:01 am
contained on the flight data recorder. that will go to the heart of hopefully starting to unravel the mystery of what happened to flight 804. was it a bomb or catastrophic failure in flight, metal fatigue and plane coming apart or tech no logical problem that led to a cascading series of events that caused the plane to go down killing 66 on board. this is a very big development. not only did they identify locations for wreckage but found the coke pitd voice recorder and extracted the memory unit. they'll have to listen very carefully to hear what's on it. by the way, the ntsb is a party to the investigation along with the egyptian authorities and french ntsb, their version. you have very qualified engineers on this job right now and they will listen to and analyze the cockpit voice recorder. >> tom, a few questions for you.
7:02 am
does that flight data recorder also have that pinger and also set to essentially expire within a couple of days? >> it should, that's correct. it should have a pinger like the cockpit voice recorder but now that they have identified the location of the wreckage and they have a feeling -- found the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder should be close by. one critical issue though, jose, the bottom of the sea is describeds a very muddy, salty bottom, very soft. it's possible that the wreckage sank into that muddy bottom and therefore what you hope is that the flight data recorder is not buried in the mud but closer to the surface. closer to the wreckage. >> to the wreckage, right. on the voice recorder, is it just the communications in the cockpit and how long norm staals that recording? >> that should have recorded the duration of the flight and they should have that and contains
7:03 am
conversations between the co-pilots, not only the conversations you would hear over the head sets but there's a microphone in the cockpit picking up a.m. bee yent noise. when they were listening to the conversations with the metro jet liner that went down back in october, they could hear a nano second of an explosion in that recording of the ambient sound and that led them to believe this was in fact a bomb that brought down that plane. >> tom costello, thank you very much i want to take you to capitol hill and senate in session. overnight lawmakers reach a compromise to allow votes on two bills dealing with gun reform. the first on whether to ban people on the government's terrorism watch list from being able to guy guns and the other on expanding background checks to gun shows and internet sales. the deal announced after an emotional 15 hour filibuster led by democrat chris murphy.
7:04 am
>> it is devastating. it is devastating to the families who lived through this trauma to watch the united states senate do nothing, absolutely nothing week after week. congress hasn't passed a single measure that would make the next mass shooting, the next murder of kids in this country less likely. >> as democrats press for action they are gaining an unlikelial lie, donald trump. he is a supporter of the so-called no fly, no buy legislation will meet with nra to get them on board. let's start with luke russert on capitol hill this morning. tell us what we've got here. can we expect these votes on these two bills? >> reporter: well, hey, jose, we can expect votes on an amendment process, appropriations bill, pertaining to two things you
7:05 am
just mentioned, one the no fly, no buy terror list. if you're on the terrorist watch list you should not be able to buy a company. this is something congress debated after the san bernardino shooting. there are differences between republicans and democrats about due process. republicans saying we're open to that but we don't want somebody on the terrorist watch list to have their second amendment rights violated by the government deciding who's on the list and who is not. they want more judicial review of that list, perhaps a three-day doj can block a gun sale for three days sean have a look at it. they'll have to figure out a way forward on that. democrats say that puts the burden of proof way too high on the government will allow terrorists to get guns if they wait out the three days. the other portion of this is the old proposal, close the gun show loophole and make internet sales have stricter background checks. this is something that came out of newtown and went down on the
7:06 am
senate floor with the families of the newtown victims in the gallery. these are very emotional pieces of legislation. whether or not they will pass, i go back to the vote in december after san bernardino, a terrible terrorist attack, they went down then. the nra has extreme power on capitol hill. republicans don't like to go against the nra. i think there could be an opening for folks i've spoken to about the no fly, no buy, with there's a way to figure out due process rights and judicial review of who's on the list and how long they are there and whether or not doj can move the needle on that, maybe you'll see movement. we'll see. certainly a very effective strategy by senate murphy to bring attention to this issue. >> luke russert, thank you very much. let's go to hallie jackson covering the trump campaign and joins me on the phone. there are renewed problems for trum p -- there you are, nice to see you. >> reporter: hi.
7:07 am
>> new problems with fellow republicans tell me about that. >> reporter: let me set you up why we're here. this is donald trump's motorcade. he pulled into law offices here because he's here for a deposition in a lawsuit that he is involved in. this goes back to what happened basically a year ago today when trump made those comments about some from mexico being drug dealers and rapists. you remember the high profile comments. because of that a top chef pulled out of a deal he had been involved with with trump and trump sued and that is the legal case being discussed here today. trump is in washington. we can swing around and see there's about maybe 60 or so protesters here from the human rights campaign that have come out to try to make their voices heard. you can see security detail, his top aides having meeting on capitol hill and we understand from sources over at the republican national committee headquarters as well to do these discussions. these are things that happen often. this is significant because we've been seeing top aides
7:08 am
talking with congressional republicans again and again and again. that is to try to rebuild the relationship at least the hope is, between the trump campaign and the republican establishment who is still hesitant even at this point, a year after donald trump came down those -- that escalator at trump tower and announced his candidacy, now still hesitant to fully embrace him or his policies. you're seeing that with larry hogan coming out and saying he cannot vote for trump this fall. blue state governor close sall lie of chris christie who is somebody who is one of donald trump's top confidants. and new discussions this morning about who is going to be working with the trump campaign and rnc. new hire has been made ed brookover who worked with dr. ben carson involved with the trump team going to be a liaison between the rnc and trump campaign. sources saying that is hopefully going to rebuild the

relationship between the two parties. >> hallie jackson, thank you very much. we're watching what could be a pivotal day in democratic presidential politics. kristen welker is covering that. good morning. what do we know about bernie sanders today. >> of course, senator sanders, secretary clinton had that big summit here in d.c. on tuesday. senator sanders still very much in this race, although it doesn't look like he's an active candidate. he's going to hold a video conference call essentially with some of his grass roots supporters and i'll read you a line from a release he sent out. it says, we must continue our political revolution. what does that mean? we know senator sanders wants to see big changes to the system. he wants to get rid of superdelegates and wants dnc chair debbie wasserman schultz to be replaced. those are among the discussions going on between the sander and clinton camps. based on my conversations with
7:10 am
officials from both campaigns, they have stepped up their outreach to each other. they are in constant contact as they discuss some of these thorny issues. but all of this comes as pressure is really starting to mount on senator sanders to effectively drop out of this race and today mounting even more his first endorser from the hill, congressman today going to announce his endorsement of secretary clinton. i anticipate this is a preview of things to come. what does sanders want? that is the big question. he wants concessions on key issues. the question is, can he get it before the big convention in july? >> putting a lot of money into key states? >> she is, as you see senator sanders reach out to supporters, secretary clinton focused on the general election. she is putting $7.3 million into a new ad. this is her first big tv ad blitz in battleground states. some of the ads negative against

trump. but two ads out today are positive ads about secretary clinton, aimed at reintroducing her to voters and improving some of her negative ratings with voters if you will, her unfavorable ratings with voters. take a look at the ads out today. >> for hillary, it's always been about kids and when millions couldn't get health care, this first lady worked with republicans and democrats to fix it. creating the children's health insurance program -- >> so that every child gets the health care that child deserves to have. >> now 8 million kids are covered. that's the kind of leader she is. and the kind of president she'll be. >> and recent polls show secretary clinton is leading donald trump right now. one poll showing her up by 12 points. she has air waves to herself right now. and all of this comes as she's getting a big endorsement, oprah winfrey saying she's now with hillary clinton. >> kristen welker, thanks very

much. president obama expected to leave for orlando within the hour for a brief visit to comfort a community still shaken by last weekend's massacre at the pulse nightclub along with visiting the families of the 49 people killed. he's also expected to meet with survivors and emergency personnel that responded to the tragedy. nbc's chris jansing is in orlando for us this morning. what can you tell us about today's presidential visit? >> reporter: it's going to be largely a private one. you can see behind me, there's still an investigation going on at the pulse nightclub, part of the street still shut down. in washington, d.c., debates are going on about terrorism, about gun control, but here this is about one thing. this is the president coming to a community that's in mourning and saying, you are not alone. we can show you a list of the places where after they were mass shootings over the course of his presidency, he has made statements in the 48 hours or so afterwards. it's shocking to see it all at

once. in some cases he has gone there and he has spoken to say large group of people, for example, in charleston, which is one year ago today, he did the same after the sandy hook shooting at newtown. other times as he will do here, this is largely about private meetings, meeting with the family, of course, of the 49 people who were killed but meeting with others who are so profoundly feeling the effects including first responders and take a listen to what josh earnest had to say. >> these organizations have done important reporting, talking to those who were there that night and profound sense of survivor's guilt that some people are expressing. it's painful just to read. and i think it's important for the president of the united states on behalf of the country to show his support for these families and for these individuals. >> reporter: and this is

something obviously that the folks at the white house and president himself feels profoundly. i can tell you i have been at many of those places where the president has spoken and it's almost remarkable how politics seems to fall await, jose. i'm sure you've seen it at all because you've gone to many of these places. it matters to people they've told me over the years that the president of the united states, whoever he is, comes and takes the time and has an opportunity to meet with them privately. today we won't see that. we will hear him make a statement and just one more point to drive home, the horror of what happened here, the city has offered free burial plots at a city cemetery. at least three people so far have taken advantage of that offer. and tomorrow the first of the funerals will be held, two more on saturday. jose. >> chris jag, thank you. ahead, tragedy at disney world, a young boy killed by an alligator at the disney world

gets guns, in other words, we hear about gun control. none of these two proposals, the no buy list that would keep terrorists from being able to get guns or suspected terrorists or the other background checks deal with restricting actual guns. so when you hear gun control, this isn't about guns the way it was dealt with semiassault style weapons. due process is the term you hear from gun control advocates saying anyone could end up on that terror list or no buy list. they pointd out that senator ted kennedy accidentally ended up on the no fly list. the point they have, whether you like it or not, this is still a constitutional right, that was upheld in the individual context by the supreme court and therefore you can't go ripping it away from people without some kind of process. that said, there isn't a lot of evidence that beyond getting a vote you would get an actual compromise to get a law passed. but i would say in a game of inches, the people control gun control side of this is picking up a few inches right now, jose.

>> and just how big is this no fly list and how many people are included in it? >> well, a very small number of actual americans. so a list of thousands, not a list of millions. having said that, the constitutional side to be fair to it is look, if you were the one being held off the plane or not being able to buy the gun you would care about it. the constitutional dimension isn't just in scale, any person's tugal rights violated is a problem. but again, i think the question is do they want to work something out? to get into the weeds as we wrap up, you can set up a system where there's a mechanism to get off the list. you could have this where you don't get a gun immediately but go pursue it in court. there are ways to deal with this if both sides want to do that. >> unless the bureaucracy takes a year to get off that list -- >> the amendment wanted three days and democrats have talked about a couple months. a year would probably be too

the political reality of what's happening in the senate? >> the political reality of what's happening in the senate, you see republican senators conflicted between a party nominee who they are not 100% behind. that's going to manifest itself i suspect in a number of issues the gun issue you've been talking about being one of them. >> and how so? so they are not that worried about the issue of gun control, more i guess concerned about the differences between themselves and trump? >> they are very interested in the substantive issues. one of the more interesting things about this election is that you have a nominee who is not exactly toeing the line with party orthodoxy. his offer to negotiate with the nra is an example of that. that makes the senators a little bit unsure, i think of where the next development is coming from. >> you think trump has -- is
