for first time since sunday's deadly attack. he said a threat to all americans was made and he called for a tight upping of the gun laws. they delivered 49 white roses in memory of those lost. they grieved with the families. speaking at a makeshift memorial the president said counterterrorism actions overseas can never prevent lone wolf attacks here at home. >> given the fact that the last two terrorist attacks on our soil, orlando and san bernardino, were home grown, carried out not by external plotters, not by a vast network, or a sophisticated cell, but by deranged individuals warped by the hateful propaganda they had seen over the internet, then we're going to have to do more

to prevent these kind of events from occurring. it will take more than just our military. >> a vote on stricter gun control laws is scheduled in the senate on monday following democrat's marathon filibuster earlier this week. however, house speaker paul ryan poured some cold water on the measures when speaking to nbc's chuck todd. >> we're looking at the corwin amendment and make sure we get this right. the question right now is, if someone is on a terror watch list, are the authorities notified as to whether a person on that list is trying to purchase a gun or not? that is the procedure right now. so the question is, can we make sure that that procedure works the way it is supposed to work. >> on thursday, cia chief brennan delivered an extreme isis threat. >> the fact that isil has been able to rapidly develop capabilities in other countries, this is a global challenge. if the numbers of isil fighters

senator ron johnson writes, mateen searched pulse orlando and shooting as victims lay dying. a senior law enforcement official tells nbc news, during the massacre mateen posted you kill innocent women and children by doing air strikes, now taste islamic state vengeance. armed with two weapons during the shooting, an employee at this gun shop tells us mateen tried to buy ammo and body armor here two months ago. but was turned down because something felt wrong. meantime, the funerals for the victims began, juan guerrero had finished the first year at college. his boyfriend killed by his side will be laid to rest. the first of 49 funerals, in a city overwhelmed with grief. now to politics, democrats must unite in an effort to defeat donald trump but it must transform. that was the message bernie sanders sent in a live stream video to supporters last night.

the video was touted over the past several days as an important message on the democratic race. however, sanders said he would join hillary clinton to defeat donald trump, but he was nowhere near conceding the democratic primary. >> defeating trump cannot be our only goal. we must continue our grass roots effort to create the america that we know we can become. and we must take that energy into the democratic national convention on july 25th in philadelphia where we will have more than 1,900 delegates. >> well, that was live streaming, and hillary clinton racked up a high profile vote of confidence from former republican deputy secretary of state richard armitage. he served ronald reagan and george h.w. bush. this comes as clinton installs her own chief of staff, effectively taking over operations there, leading into the fall.

on the republican side, the gop continues to be dismayed by trump's candidacy. here's former new jersey governor kristine todd whitman slamming trump on msnbc's "last word." >> i am too worried about what this campaign is doing to the country, what his rhetoric is, how he'd make us a whole lot more vulnerable to terrorists by some of his language. i think he's a wrong person to be president and he doesn't represent the party in which i group. -- i grew up. >> trump continued his divisive message, but not before getting his mechanical animals a bit mixed up. >> i have read about this place for a long time. where's that horse -- the horse -- hey, you want to hit the papers tomorrow? let's get that horse. i'll ride that horse. the problem is even if i make it, they'll say i fell off the horse and it was terrible. >> the problem is he was talking

about a mechanical bull. but it seems trump isn't the only one making extreme statements of late. senator john mccain said that president obama was directly responsible for the orlando attack. >> barack obama is directly responsible for it, responsibility for it lies with president obama and his failed policies. because he pulled everybody out of iraq and i predicted at the time that isis would go unchecked and there would be attacks on the united states of america. it's a matter of record. so he is directly responsible. >> mccain attempted to clean up those remarks with nbc's hallie jackson. >> the president had not pulled everybody out of iraq, we would have never seen the rise of isis. so he bears responsibility. >> so i want to be clear. are you back tracking on the statement he's directly responsible? that's the quote. >> i'm saying that the president of the united states' actions

will be adding signage. it is unclear what the signs will entail or if they'll warn against alligators. meanwhile, officials have pulled a couple more gators from the water but still no positive match to the one that killed 2-year-old lane graves. the orange county medical examiner has officially stated the cause of death as drowning and traumatic injuries. the little boy's family released a statement saying, words cannot describe the shock and grief our family is experiencing over the loss of our son. we are devastated and ask for privacy during this extremely difficult time. a deadly assault on a british lawmaker has the u.k. in mourning today. jo cox, a rising member of parliament and a mother of two was attacked yesterday in broad day light. local media reports say a man shot and stabbed her on the street. nearby officers quickly arrested the 52-year-old suspect. it's sent shock waves across the u.k. where gun violence is rare. it bears some resemblance to the

20 minutes past the hour on a friday. all right, so while hillary clinton and donald trump are set to face off against one another in the general election, one person stands in their way. bernie sanders. now, sanders may have given every indication he was ready to step aside for the good of the democratic party, but yesterday's live stream speech shows he's trying to use his new found position of power to change the party from within before he bows out for good. so joining me now is politico reporter daniel strauss to talk about this. good morning. >> good morning. >> is there a chance bernie uses the 1900 delegates he mentioned in the live stream video to mutiny against clinton at the convention? >> i mean, that's certainly what he's saying he's going to do. he have says that he has enough leverage with the amount of delegates he has to provoke some kind of confrontation or some sort of dramatic push on the convention floor to move the democratic platform in a more progressive direction.

>> so does this leave sanders' supporters confused right now? do they fight on for sander, do they choose clinton, what do they do? >> it's definitely a transition time for sanders' supporters. yesterday, we saw congressman raul grijalva switch from bernie sanders to hillary clinton and i think we'll see more of that. >> interesting to see what happens between now and then. then of course there's this, we have been talking about it all week long. especially with the filibuster in light of the massacre there in orlando. how likely is the chance of congress passing gun control legislation? >> it seems unlikely. there are a number of factionsen the left and the right pushing competing gun proposals and while they're meant to prevent another massacre like orlando, the impasse is between say a

after the devastating attack in orlando this week, everyone from president obama to jimmy fallon offered words and sentiments to help make sense of it all. here's a touch of how it all played out. >> where does this stop? >> you'd think by now we'd be in a different place. >> the news out of orlando yesterday is still impossible to fathom. >> and right now, this just hurts and the worst thing is this pain is so familiar. >> as has been true too many times before, i held and hugged grieving family members and parents and they asked why does this keep happening? >> naturally, we each ask ourselves what can you possibly say in the face of this horror? but then sadly you realize you know what to say, but it's been said too many times before.
