explain to those families why more can't be done. meanwhile, senator john mccain blames the president for the massacre that killed 49 people at the pulse nightclub. tense rhetoric that has democrats accusing mccain of following donald trump's lead. and warriors melt down, steph curry loses his cool as lebron james and the cavaliers force the nba finals to game 7. it is 5:30 here on the east coast, 2:30 out west. this is "way too early." good morning, everyone. it is friday, june 17th. i'm alex witt. usually known as a voice of calm amid a combustible campaign season, senator john mccain turned heads yesterday when he said this about president obama. >> barack obama is directly responsible for it. because when he pulled everybody out of iraq, al qaeda went to syria, became isis. and isis is what it is today.
2:31 am
thanks to barack obama's failures -- utter failures by pulling everybody out of iraq, thinking that conflicts end just because we leave. so the responsibility for it lies with president barack obama and his failed policies. >> directly responsible -- >> directly responsible because he pulled everybody out of iraq and i predicted at the time that isis would go unchecked and there would be attacks on the united states of america. it's a matter of record. so he is directly responsible. >> donald trump's campaign manager corey lewandowski tweeted a link from none other than "the washington post" with the unambiguous headline, john mccain, obama is directly responsible for orlando attack. now, the reaction from the left was swift, a spokesman for senate minority leader harry reid said, quote, mccain's
2:32 am
unhinged comments are the latest excuse that they're puppets of trump and later mccain said he wasn't personally responsible, but to clarify, i was referring to the national security decisions that have led to the rise of isil, not the president himself. and hallie jackson caught up with him on capitol hill as well. >> i believe that the fact of what i have said and meant was that the president's actions by pulling everybody out of iraq which led then to al qaeda moving to syria, which meant the birth of isis and the president's failure to address the threat of isis as al -- which led to attacks on the united states of america which i predicted, the director of national intelligence has predicted. and we predict more attacks on the united states of america. if the president had not pulled everybody out of iraq, you will would have never seen the rise of isis so he bears responsibility. >> i want to be clear. >> you want to be clear. i'm not back tracking on anything. i am saying that the president of the united states' actions --
2:33 am
the actions, were responsible because of the full withdrawal of troops from iraq, which led then to al qaeda going to syria. which then led to isis. and our failure to have a strategy to destroy isis has led the attacks on the united states of america and europe. that was predicted by me and the director of national intelligence among others. the head of the cia is offering a new warning to lawmakers about isis saying the terror group is as dangerous as ever. that is the stark assessment director john brennan gave the senate intelligence committee yesterday. he says that isis is bigger and more widespread than al qaeda ever was. and that efforts to beat the group overseas have not slowed its efforts to carry out terror attacks. he also warned isis will continue to try to tap into lone wolf attackers like the orlando nightclub shooter, omar mateen. >> as we have seen in orlando, san bernardino and elsewhere, isil is attempting to inspire
2:34 am
attacks by sympathizers who have no direct links to the group. a single leader urged the followers to conduct attacks in the home countries if they were unup able to travel to syria and iraq. >> brennan said that the cia found no connection between mateen and any terrorist groups overseas. speaking in orlando yesterday, president obama said it will take more than our military to prevent terrorist attacks like the most recent one in florida. he and the vice president met with the victims' families and paid their respects by laying 49 white roses at a a memorial. he said he's committed to wiping out isis on the battlefield but urged lawmakers to do more to keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of those he called quote deranged individuals warped by the hateful propaganda on the internet. >> this debate needs to change. it's outgrown the old political stalemates. the notion that the answer to this tragedy would be to make sure that more people in a night

club are similarly armed to the killer defies common sense. those who defend the easy accessibility of assault weapons should meet these families and explain why that makes sense. or why it is that we think our liberty requires these repeated tragedies. it's not -- that's not the meaning of liberty. >> today also marks exactly one year since another mass shooting shook this nation. it was on june 17, 2015 when nine people were gunned down while attending wednesday night bible study at the historic emanuel ame church. among the dead was reverend pinckney who was also a state senator. yesterday, we heard from a woman

who lost three family members in the attack -- her mother and two cousins. >> on sunday when i learned that 49 people were killed at a gay club in orlando, and 53 more were injured, making it the largest mass shooting in the modern u.s. history, i turned off the tv. i did not participate in social media. because my heart could not take hearing about that, knowing that families were getting ready to feel the same kind of pain that all the people in charleston and especially the nine families were feeling. >> earlier this week mother's emanuel new pastor extended prayers to those in orlando. dylann roof is awaiting trial and federal prosecutors will seek the death penalty. the senate is expected to vote on four gun control measures on monday. the amendments were filed by two
2:37 am
democrats and two republicans. there are two competing amendments that deal with background checks and two dealing with preventing suspected terrorists from buying guns. none of the amendments are likely to hit the 60 vote threshold to move forward, highlighting a familiar divide between both parties. >> over the course this weekend, we are going to unleash a fury of advocacy on republican congressional offices and maybe we won't convince them on background checks where they're dug in more, but, you know, i challenge republicans especially those who are up for election to vote against preventing terrorists, those who are on the no fly list from getting guns. >> we should be focused on terrorism and stopping isis. i think far too many senate democrats and president obama are refusing to get serious about stopping radical islamic terrorism in the face of this orlando attack, we should be taking up legislation next week to prevent isis terrorists from using u.s. passports to come to america. britain is in mourning today

the hands of man driven by hatred is a manifestation of a coarseness in our politics that must stop. one year after announcing his candidacy and declaring he doesn't need anybody's money, trump is angling away from the battleground states and focusing on fund-raising instead. sources tell "the new york times" that the private events for donors were often scheduled first followed by his campaign rallies. and that trump has informed people raising money he's not interested in traveling to states for donor events unless there is a rally scheduled as well. meanwhile, hillary clinton announced upcoming campaign events in the battleground states of north carolina and ohio. trump was in texas last night beginning a series of fund-raisers with one in dallas and two more in san antonio and houston today. and tomorrow, trump will go to arizona for a fund-raiser that will coincidentally take place at the home of 1964 gop nominee barry goldwater. some republicans are starting to fear a 1964-like land slide as it has been more than four weeks since trump led in a single

public poll. at his rally in dallas, he down played the recent slide citing his performance in the primaries. >> when i poll, i do fine. but when i run, i do much better. in other words people say i'm not going to say who i'm voting for. don't be embarrassed, i'm not going to say who i'm voting for. and then they get in and i do much better. it's like an amazing effect. >> well, donald trump conquered the republican establishment in the primaries but their partnership going into the general election is looking more and more fraught. nbc news reports that trump is brushing off the republican national committee's advice on messaging and has failed to get the team to staff up. with politico reporting that the rnc is being tasked with the infrastructure typically managed by the campaign and distrust from the nominee side. as trump recently fired national political director rick wiley has joined the rnc. reince priebus said everything is fine, flying to dallas now with donald trump, reports of discord are pure fiction.
