it's my mom's birthday. she turns 84 years old today. she just moved up to live with us in connecticut. she has lost most of her memory. we were having a talk with her around the table a few months back and she asked, did i have a good life because she doesn't remember much anymore. i said yeah, mom. we have had a great life and have had a great life thanks to you. thanks for being with us. happy birthday, mom. good morning. this morning trump strikes back. the rebuttal after hillary clinton shreds his business record. >> he has written a lot of books about business. they all seem to end at chapter 11. >> trump up at bat later this morning promising to take down hillary clinton in a self-proclaimed big speech. the search is on. new information on who clinton

the status quo and worst features of politics. that is a message they are going to try to hammer home. they are hitting five broad topics talking about trade, clinton foundation, terrorism, human rights and immigration. expect him to talk about relationship with china and what he sees as fraud within the clinton foundation. they are trying to paint hillary clinton as not only a status quo politician but somebody who is untrust worthy and proven to be untrustworthy. that is the point of the campaign and the picture they believe will be most effective. hillary clinton not trustworthy going into general election. >> what is the bigger campaign infrastructure looking like now that corey is out and we know they have announced new hires and we have the website that is going up i believe it says they want you to text your phone number or text trump to a certain number that way they get your telephone number and you

get access to the website. >> reporter: trump coordinating tweets to series of e-mails that went out to journalists, the instagram video thrks website where you can put your phone number in and get text messages back. bits and pieces of this has been gloati floating around. it is pretty standard for most political campaigns. it certainly is an apparatus that hillary clinton has been honing, an apparatus that most campaigns have from day one even at the state congressional level or the local level but donald trump has not had this. he has been a one man messaging machine and been able to do that by former campaign manager orie lewandowski. the problem is they made a lot of problems they needed to change things up in order to get the party behind them and get
6:05 am
donors to start giving them money. they have a huge money problem only $1.3 million cash on hand from the may fec filing. corey lewandowski's ouster was sending a signal. today is another example of that if he stays on message, if he reads a teleprompter. it will do a lot to prove that he is changing. >> also, a way for the campaign to collect easy data on potential new voters. katy tur right there in new york city. thanks so much. we will see you later for the speech from donald trump. we have hillary clinton now bracing after donald trump gives his remarks to give her own. we saw trump live tweeting during her speech and he was trying to rebuke some things she was saying. kasie hunt is following the clinton campaign joining us from capitol hill. we know the secretary is having
6:06 am
a meeting with democratic leadership today. do we also anticipate hillary clinton to live tweet remarks? have you heard anything from the campaign? i don't think the clinton campaign is adopting the play book her twitter account is active after things like this. the clinton campaign is trying to make sure reporters have the information that they need to discuss many claims they are expecting from the trump speech. they are certainly watching it carefully, trying to paint the picture they want to paint of the clinton foundation arguing that giving a donation to clinton foundation is essentially just for good works. the expectation that donald trump is going to make references claiming people were buying influence. clinton is also going to be in north carolina laying out her economic proposals.
6:07 am
we, of course, heard her yesterday hitting donald trump over his potential. the second piece of that is for them to lay out what she says she would do policy wise. that is where she is going to head after she has the meeting here on capitol hill meeting with house democrats here in just a few minutes. >> fresh information about who clinton is potentially vetting. what more do you know about that? >> at this point the clinton campaign is in the vetting process. we do know that and there has been reporting from washington post that they are looking at among other candidates julian castro, elizabeth warren, tim kaine. we emphasize nbc news is working on this. vice presidential reporting. the pick is closely watched. there is calculations at work. warren might reach out to

progressives in the democratic party but could cause concern among potentially financial backers of clinton's campaign. brown from ohio is a name discussed. the question there is his senate seat very important to try to take back the senate for democrats this election season. and with cajohn kasich holding they lose it. >> look for confirmation from nbc on this. thank you. also want to get breaking news about this new information of what may be the largest health care fraud take down ever. want to go to pete williams. what can you tell us? >> this will be an announcement by the department of health and human services and the justice department at 11:00 this morning, series of health care fraud arrests. it's a reminder that though the government is trying hard to battle health care remains a persistent problem and what we
6:09 am
have seen is annual round ups to draumatize the problem with health care fraud, it is a multibillion-dollar scam on the government. we will hear about recent cases. we expect one of them will involve a case of the last couple of days, five brooklyn men arrested, charged with running a scam that involved physical and occupational therapy. the government says these men paid patients to receive unnecessary physical and occupational therapy. they billed medicaid for $86 million and got 38 million of it for themselves. federal prosecutors say they put the money through a series of shell companies to conceal it and hide from the irs. we will hear more from the attorney general, the secretary of hhs and a bunch of other federal officials about this in just a couple of hours. >> we will bring that news to everybody when it happens. thank you. we have house democrats

pushing for gun control legislation but they were shut down. so they tried forcing a vote last night but the gop majority was having none of it. frustrated democrats raised their voices in protest. >> the clerk will report the title of the bill. >> hr 5388 bill to amend homeland security act to provide for innovative research and development and for other purposes. >> so not sure if you can make it out but the democrats were chanting no bill no break calling for july congressional recess to be cancelled until gun control legislation moves forward. susan collins is sponsoring a compromise measure but that is also facing an uphill battle. up next, new details on the orlando gunman's final days and hours. one of his former friends speaking out and prompting new questions over whether the fbi missed big warning signs.

around midnight and left for two hours. he returned and opened fire. he purchased tickets to california to travel two days after the attack. we are joined with more. let's start with the plane tickets. >> reporter: omar am teen's wife says he purchased tickets to go to the san francisco area to visit mateen's wife's ailing mother sometime in july. certainly a lot of questions about that and why he would do so if he was preparing to die. from earlier reporting we know from law enforcement officials that he bought expensive dinners and jewelry as if he did not expect to pay it back. >> the plane ticket for all three of them, for mateen, his wife and young child. >> reporter: yes. exactly right.

6:18 am
from anwar al awlaki and that they were powerful. here is some of what he had to say. >> omar mentioned he had seen videos of anwar al awlaki which threw up a red flag. he told me they were powerful which raised the flag more for me. i contacted the fbi and let them know this is a gentleman at that point was in the second marriage. he had a son, starting a family. i didn't think he fit the profile but just in case i wanted them to look into it. >> reporter: so, again, the fbi looked into this in 2014 after a previous investigation a year before in 2013 where he was looked at for ten months. both cases the fbi says those inquiries turned up nothing of substance but does raise questions whether the fbi may have missed some warning signs. i asked attorney general about that yesterday. she says that is something that the agency is looking into to see what if anything they could have done better. >> we also know first responding

welcome back, everybody. we have breaking news concerning marco rubio. once not running for re-election for his senate seat in florida, "the washington post" now saying that he will be running for re-election in that seat. an announcement will be coming later today. we know that there was much speculation recently about whether or not he would want to try to go after and maintain his position in that seat. so we will look for him to make a formal announcement coming up later today potentially, but this reverses a pledge that he made a year ago that he would not run for re-election. this was during his presidential run and that he would return to private life. so this is a big development for him and certainly a big development for republicans, who would like to see him maintain that seat. kelly o'donnell is live for us in washington, d.c. kelly is on position to wait for hillary clinton who's going to be speaking to democratic leadership. kelly, this is a big reversal

and one that some people had suspected might come from marco rubio. >> reporter: well, marco rubio had been getting pressure from fellow republicans because they are very concerned about maintaining control of the senate with the election coming up and believe that there was not a strong enough candidate in the republican field and so they have been pushing him to do this. now, for a long time those close to marco rubio said he would not be anything but a private citizen come january. in part wanting to move into the private sector, he's got four young kids to raise, college to pay for and wanting to kind of take a turn. they also had insisted he would only run for one office and that, of course, was president. his bid for the republican nomination ended months ago. but this is an opportunity for marco rubio to remain on the national stage and that is part of what is inspiring this. to be in public life and to try to run again perhaps in 2020 if he wants to try for the republican nomination, if a

republican does not win in november, it is an easier thing to do if you have the national platform of being a united states senator. now, that does not mean it's an easy race. this is a very expensive state in which to run, a very competitive field, and at the same time marco rubio has gotten a lot of attention for kind of talking about not enjoying the senate so much. and so that has been a criticism that his opponents will certainly exploit, so that's breaking news here. as you mentioned, thomas, we are in one of the hallways of capitol hill and we expect that secretary clinton will be arriving here shortly. we just saw the democratic leader, nancy pelosi, walk by. i said what are her expectations for today and she gave me a very sunny "we expect it to be wonderful." this is a chance for secretary clinton to meet with the 188 democrats in the house. part of what she will wanting to convey to them is a sense of the direction of the campaign. any of them seeking re-election are on the ballot in november and many believe with hillary

clinton at the top of the ticket, their chances to expand their numbers in the house will rise. of course that's a headache for republicans, who have an advantage with 247 republicans. they have control. and in the house, having control means just about everything in terms of getting things done. so this is a pep talk kind of day, a good to see you kind of day. of course secretary clinton has been out of the senate for several years now when she first began to serve for the obama administration, so there are quite a number of members of the house who don't know her personally as well and haven't worked alongside her, so it's a chance to build on relationships, encourage her to have some new ones and they all have a stake in this. the message for the fall campaign will come in many ways down from what the democratic nominee, presumptive at this point will do. so we are standing by. a little behind schedule, but that's okay. as soon as we see the secretary arriving, we will let you know, thomas. >> okay. kelly o'donnell, you're always on time. so we appreciate it and we know
