>> what do you make of this, if i could ask you. >> it's political and it's -- i mean, you had a vote on this earlier in the appropriations. even two democrats voted against. i see what they wanted to be able to achieve. i think it was more about press. but i was most disturbed by the number of e-mails i received to raise money on this. this is more about democrats trying to raise money than actually achieving something. >> the house remains out of session now until july 5th. democrats continue to sit in as we speak and they're expected to meet again this morning at 10:00 a.m. well, donald trump delivered his strongest attack yet against hillary clinton yesterday. as he read from the tell prompter out of his new york hotel, he condemned clinton as a world class liar and slammed her character and her policy record. many of the claims were found to be misleading or outright false. nbc's hallie jackson separates fact from fiction.

have died down with bernie sanders admitting it doesn't appear he'll be the nominee. he's expected to be at a new york rally tonight where he'll give a where we go from here speech. tomorrow, senator sanders will sit down with joe and mika on "morning joe." well, decision day in the u.k. and britons are weighing in on whether or not to remain in the european union. for more let's bring in cnbc's geoff cutmore. good morning, what's the latest? >> oh, this is louisa. he had to step out for a second. that's fine. same same. same same. the polls are open. it's a super exciting day. the first time ever that we're looking at a vote by any country in the e.u. to possibly leave the e.u. brits are being asked do you want to remain part of the european union or do you want to leave? why are they being asked this

question? david cameron promised if he was re-elected last time around he would pose this question to the brits and that's why we're going to the polls today. now, we had some intense campaigning in the last couple of months especially. you have a couple of main things that really are the sticking points that people are voting on. one being the economy. here a lot of people are saying that the leave camp, they have been gaining ground on the economic arguments. be it on the job argument, one in six british jobs or one in six jobs in britain is giving to people coming from the e.u. also, a lot of money filters through via trades to britain and benefits on those grounds. with immigration, the leave campaign they have been strong on arguing that we want to control our own borders. now, the remain campaign they say, actually you have more control over immigration if you remain and you have a seat at the table in discussing migrant flows in europe for an example which has been a huge, huge area. a disastrous area for a lot of the policymakers over the last two years especially given the syrian refugee crisis. now, when it comes to some of

the other issues, what happens if we actually leave? nobody really knows. at the moment we're look agent the market reaction. markets are looking at the latest polls that indicate that potentially the remain campaign are a little bit ahead. this morning it has to be said, it's raining bucket, raining all over the place, which could affect turnout which could be determining the vote as well. >> thank you so much for popping in for us. well, dangerous weather extremes are sweeping the nation. out west firefighters across five states continue their relentless battle against wildfires as a searing heat wave fuels the flames. while several wildfires are burning across california, some 1,400 firefighters descended upon los angeles county to contain the flames of two brush fires that have near populated towns. the so-called san gabriel complex fire has consumed 5,000 acres and only 10% has been

contained. meanwhile, severe storms pummel the midwest with hammering rain, fierce winds, even tornadoes. several tornadoes tore down trees and power lines and knocked out electricity. one storm chaser even had a close encounter yesterday as he drove straight into the tornado brewing overhead. scary moments there. meteorologist bill karins has the latest. >> yeah, that was dangerous. a lot of them were rain wrapped tornadoes, that makes visibility very poor those people were lucky. the worst of it is now in areas of ohio, west virginia and also pennsylvania. as far as the storm reports went, we had 18 reports of tornados all in northern illinois. a lot of wind reports, in indiana and also in ohio. the only concerns are between kentucky and ohio and through west virginia. charleston, get ready for storms

headed your way. cincinnati had a strong storm go through. in washington, d.c., you will get soaked this morning. a good, steady, moderate rain as we go throughout the morning commute. so it will be slow. as far as today's risk, 34 million people are at risk from the ohio valley right through if mid-atlantic. we'll get two rounds of storm. one, we're dealing with this morning and then another one later on this afternoon. here's 9:00 a.m. the radar shows mostly northern virginia and through the mid-atlantic. delmarva is getting soaked. then this evening we'll see new storms popping up around 5:00 or 6:00 in areas like north carolina. >> thank you for that. well, did florida authorities finally catch the alligator responsible for the drowning of a 2-year-old boy at a disney resort? new details on the rescue mission to the bottom of the world where temperatures reached an incredible minus 115 degrees. it is 5:12 eastern time. you're watching "first look." ♪

the alligator responsible for the death of a 2-year-old has been captured and killed. on wednesday, the state wildlife commission said it completed an investigation into the attack at disney's grand floridian hotel. the finding was based on expert analysis and observations of the trapped alligators. in statement, the boy's family expressed their gratitude for support that they have received. a rescue mission to the bottom of the world is being hailed a success. the plane landed in frozen darkness taking off with two ill workers. after flying more than 15 hours pitch black, they were delivered safely to chile in late wednesday. and in the search for the missing family and the boat, the coast guard confirmed they found a body wearing a life jacket. saying identification is pending. a search plane spotted the debris field with items matching those on the family's vessel. among the items, six of the seven life vests the family

member claims were on board along with two kayaks. officials remain hopeful about finding the other three. a verdict is expected in the trial of baltimore police officer caesar goodson. he's the third officer to stand trial in the 2015 death of freddie gray. goodson drove the police van and he faces the most serious charge -- depraved hard murder. he faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted. and three people detained at the new jersey entrance to the holland tunnel pleaded not guilty wednesday. the pennsylvania natives allegedly posted on facebook that they were headed to new york city to extract a girl involved with drugs. all three now face multiple weapons charges and are being held on $75,000 bail each. after an almost 18 hour sit-in, are the democrats any closer to meaningful gun control? >> we're not afraid of the nra! i work 'round the clock.

as members of congress left following a recess vote. well, joining me now nbc's contributor raul reyes. we know that the democrats staged this sit-in but they didn't get what they wanted which was a vote on gun legislation. >> right. >> but did they win? >> i think it's a win for now. this is such an extraordinary moment where they're tapping into the public frustration, all of the anger surrounding the mass shootings that i think it's a win for now. this is an argument that even for people who are totally checked out of politics they can look at five seconds of this and understand what it's about. so i think in that sense, yes. when you look at the polling something like 90% of americans pretty much overwhelmingly support the type of measures they're trying to put through. actually, even paul ryan recognizes the sensitivity around this. because when this first went down, he could have called the sergeant of arms and had them removed but number one, bad optics. number two, this is an issue that the whole country is deeply concerned about. >> house members are still on the floor discussing this. but congress moved to reconvene so they'll be back july 5th.

what going to happen to both the democrats and the republicans when they go home during this break to their constituents? what's the pressure going to be? >> we're going to see a real deepening of the partisan divide. look at it this way, hillary clinton has already said she's very proud of being an enemy of the nra so this is something that she can run with. it's going to be a little more complicated for the republicans because as we know the republicans the conservatives are against the measures but yet, donald trump who is the nominee, he has said he wants to meet with the nra and possibly discuss things like getting people on the no fly list -- making it impossible for them to buy guns. so on the republican side there might be some real divide, some push back in the party because they're not unified on this issue. and it's going to be hard for them to talk to say independents and moderates around the gun control issue. it's sensitive right now. >> this was unprecedented, historic. >> yeah. >> has this changed the rules of how they can actually get

business done in the capital? >> who said the revolution is not tough on us, right? i don't think change the rules. this is not something -- this is the risk that the democrats are taking. this not something they can do every time there's a major issue that came up for a vote. for example, affordable care act or immigration reform which -- you can't do this with them because then the public support is not there. this is a rare time where they feel emboldened by the public sentiment, by the polls in their support and this is a visceral issue. 49 americans were just killed at this nightclub. so many american communities have been struck by gun violence. i feel they're smartly tapping into the vein but this comes with a risk. i don't think see this as a common occurrence at all. >> well, the democrats did say they did not expect the momentum they got from it. but let's think about this. this sit-in how is it going to affect the election? maybe not the presidential election but definitely those that are up for re-election. >> right. there are some republican

senators who are very vulnerable on the gun issue who are saying, well, maybe we should talk about it and discuss its. the house is a different story because they're from much more conservative districts. i don't think we'll see much change there. but this will keep it front and center. you see social media all night long lit up on this issue. >> it was a very big night. raul reyes. well, over a million strong in cleveland welcomed home their champions. the fans partied like never before. that's up next. ...isn't really the trip you want to be on. hahahaha... hahaha...
