"first look" starts right now. good morning and happy friday to you. thanks for joining us this morning. i'm betty nguyen. so with more than 43 million americans headed out of town this holiday weekend, there is growing concern over the threat of terrorism. this is only heightened after recent attacks both abroad and at home and while most people

will hit the roads, airports will be busy and full of extra scrutiny. and some big city police departments are making sure they're heavily armed and highly visible. nbc's tom costello reports. >> reporter: the nypd critical response unit is on the streets and on alert in times square. across the country in l.a. county extra special ops teams are working train stations and public areas. >> i don't think people should be afraid today, but just be more aware. >> reporter: more high profile police rollouts in miami airports, in d.c. and chicago. contributing to a growing sense of unease, the attacks in paris, san bernardino, belgium, orlando and now istanbul. since the brussels attacks in march the u.s. has beefed up security at airports nationwide. >> the american public should expect to see this july 4th weekend an enhanced security presence at airports, train stations and other transit centers across the country. >> reporter: following istanbul and brussels many aviation

security experts worry u.s. airports are vulnerable. >> we have not paid enough attention to the airport facility security despite the fact that there's a long history of attacks against airports. >> reporter: the challenge for police around the world cracking small terror cells that can pick their target at will. >> if an incident occurs in the united states, it is going to be isolated. it will probably be an individual. >> the death toll following tuesday's deadly attack in istanbul at the ataturk airport has climbed to 44. and after rounding up more than a dozen people with isis links following that massacre, we are getting new details on the attackers, and where they may have come from. nbc's kelly cobiella has more. >> reporter: new security camera video showing panic in the terminal. and now a closer look at the faces of the three men who caused it. bombs hidden under winter coats, weapons in luggage. nbc has not yet verified these

images but a turkish police source says one was from russia's caucasus region, the same area as the boston marathon bombers. the other two from uzbekistan and kyrgyzstan. at least one arrived in turkey a month ago from the isis stronghold of raqqa in syria. turkish media say the three attackers rented an apartment on this busy istanbul street paying for three months up front in cash, adding a security door, keeping the windows shut and curtains drawn. inside, a strong chemical smell according to one neighbor. turkish officials said the explosives used in the attack were military grade. this is the heavy security door. neighbors say the bomb squad, forensics and special forces have all been here. one of more than a dozen raids across istanbul and the coastal city of izmir. turkey's interior minister said 13 are in custody in connection with the airport attack. >> an airport encounter this

week between attorney general loretta lynch and former president bill clinton has ignited a political firestorm. republicans say it compromised the justice department's investigation into hillary clinton. donald trump is calling it, quote, so terrible, one of the big stories of the year. the meeting occurred when the attorney general and the former president were parked on a tarmac at phoenix sky harbor international airport after visiting arizona for separate events. both former president clinton and lynch say the meeting was social. >> our conversation was a great deal about his grandchildren. it was primarily social and about our travels. he mentioned the golf he played in phoenix and he mentioned travels he'd had but there was no discussion of any matter pending before the department or any matter pending before any other body. there was no discussion of benghazi, no discussion of the state department e-mails by way of example. >> president obama rejected questions on the issue during a bill signing yesterday. his former adviser david axelrod

tweeted, i take lynch and clinton at their word that their conversation in phoenix did not touch on probe, but foolish to create such optics. judicial watch, the group that has sued for the release of clinton's private e-mails is now calling for an inspector general investigation into the lynch/clinton meeting. the veepstakes are getting real. with just three weeks until the republican national convention, former house speaker newt gingrich's name has just been added to the list of confirmed candidates being vetted by the trump team. gingrich joins new jersey governor chris christie, who is also on the short list. trump discussed christie with conservative radio host howie carr saying i'm certainly looking at him and i always will. whether it's for that or something else. trump also mentioned indiana governor mike pence. his office, though, denies any communication with the trump campaign on the issue. but the inclusion of gingrich is significant. because the vp pick could be crucial to easing republicans' concerns regarding trump's nomination. meanwhile, bernie sanders is now responding to trump's accusation that sanders outright hates

hillary clinton. >> the answer is of course, you know, trump is lying, as he always does. no, i do not hate secretary clinton. i've known her for 25 years. i have a lot of respect for her. we've worked together. we have disagreements on issues. but to say that i hate her is absolutely untrue. >> sanders also responded to npr's recent interview with joe biden and after that biden said sanders would back clinton saying, quote, i've talked to bernie. bernie's going to endorse her. this is going to work. >> as we speak, we are working with the clinton campaign trying to be able to come forward and say to my supporters out there, you know what, here's the progress we have made. i hear what secretary clinton is saying on this issue and that issue that means a whole lot to you. so i hope that we can reach that goal. we are not there at this moment. >> sanders' comments were on the same day his team solicited donations to send his 1900

delegates to the democratic convention to, quote, sepd a message to the establishment. this comes as sanders supporters filed a lawsuit against the dnc and its chair debbie wasserman schultz alleging the democratic primary was rigged for hillary clinton. government safety regulators have issued an urgent warning for some 300,000 car owners. stop driving them. it has to do with a high risk of potentially deadly air bag ruptures. this is part of a broad recall of defect irtakata air bags and affects some honda and acura models. the initial recall was made eight years ago but those who have not made the fix face serious danger. ten people have been killed in the u.s. and more than 100 injured from the faulty air bags. and federal authorities have opened an investigation into tesla. after a deadly crash involving a car using the auto pie lot system. the may 7th crash involving a tesla model "s," it was the first fatal crash involving tesla's autopilot which allows the car to steer itself. there is an explosive message for americans with the fourth of july right around the corner.

beware of firework mishaps. nobody wants that to happen. consumer product safety commission created this demo. it shows how people have been killed or seriously injured by past explosions, because they failed to back away after lighting fireworks. an average of 230 people per day go to the emergency room with fireworks related injuries around the fourth of july holiday. so be careful out there. video of a massive brawl inside a mexican restaurant in dallas has gone viral. what in the world? the fists and chairs reportedly started flying over chips and salsa. are you serious? witnesses say something else sparked that fight. no word yet on what that was. local media reports say no arrests were made. eight minutes past the hour.

good friday morning. this was las vegas yesterday. they dealt with some thunderstorms that produced really heavy batch of rain in a short period of time. look at that. a little ladder action, they get those people safely back to the shore. and did work, too. actually used the fire truck ladder. probably safer. the forecast today and through the holiday weekend, flash flooding is a concern. this boundary is going to sit from colorado to the east. but as this cold front tries to plow into areas that are going to get more humid and warm today we're going to see some severe weather. late afternoon into the early evening, areas from richmond, d.c. to reading, new york included, the whole hudson valley, chance for some definitely wind damage and maybe even a little bit of tornado action, too. so we've got to be careful with

that. there's some great weather in the great lakes today. florida storms will be a problem as we go throughout the afternoon. that's very typical for this time of year. then as we go through the holiday weekend, the heaviest rains, this is where the flash flooding is possible from colorado to kansas through missouri. notice it's the same areas on sunday, especially around kansas city. you could get five, six inches of rain over the next three to four days. then by the time we get to the fourth of july itself, that whole mess begins to move a little further to the east. i'm not saying it's going to be a complete washout but there's a potential for at least some periods of heavy rain, st. louis, indianapolis, lexington, louisville, as we head through much of west virginia, and then through washington, d.c. and richmond, again, not a complete washout. don't cancel your plans but you're going to have to keep a close eye on the forecast as we get towards firework time. >> thank you, bill. an historic moment for the pentagon but it wasn't without controversy. secretary of defense ash carter ended the ban on transgender armed forces members serving openly. many call it a major step for the u.s. military. but, some, like house armed services committee chair mack thornberry called it politics

over policy. nbc pentagon correspondent jim miklaszewski has details. >> reporter: after a year-long study, defense secretary ash carter has lifted the last gender-based barrier in the u.s. military. >> i'm announcing today that we're ending the ban on transgender americans in the united states military. >> reporter: for the first time as many as 12,000 transgender men and women now in the military will be able to openly serve without fear of being discharged. and transgender recruits will be accepted by the military services. >> what it means is that transgender troops can serve openly, they don't have to live in fear. they don't have to lie about who they are. >> i feel very betrayed. >> reporter: sage fox first served in the army as a male infantry soldier. but years later, after sage was recruited into the army reserves as a transgender woman, she was quickly pushed out and put on inactive status. >> it's fear, it's ignorance, it's bigotry, it's misinformation.

>> reporter: lifting the current ban will not come fast or easy. the military services must come up with plans to provide psychological counseling and medical services for transgender forces. including hormone treatments. it could take a year before the plan is fully implemented. but as far sage fox, she's elated. and looking forward to returning to active duty. jim miklaszewski, nbc news, the pentagon. the man at the center of the popular murder mystery podcast "serial" has been granted a new trial. a baltimore judge vacated the conviction handed down 16 years ago in the murder of sayed's ex-girlfriend. at a february hearing his current lawyers raised questions about the strength of the prosecution's evidence. also pointing to potential alibi witnesses overlooked by the trial lawyer. the maryland attorney general's office said in a statement their responsibility remains to pursue justice and defend what it believes to be a valid conviction. florida governor rick scott declared a state of emergency over a massive algae bloom along

politicians name in the same sentence, that's never good for, you know, a candidacy going forward. >> i want to switch geers now, and talk about this airport meeting. how significant is that meeting between attorney general loretta lynch and former president bill clinton? will it jeopardize a probe into hillary clinton's e-mails? >> i don't think it will jeopardize it. it's just a bad news cycle for hillary. it seems to show that the clintons feel like they're above the law where they feel like they can kind of get away with things that ordinary people, you know, can't get away with. you know, donald trump was under investigation, and his spouse met with a top law enforcement official, just imagine how much, you know, grief that he would be getting for, you know, being you know, kind of doing the same thing that bill clinton did. so it's just not a good message to send to, you know, prosecutors, and just the general public because it just sends a bad signal to people, you know, watching this case. >> well trump is not brushing it
