remarks. but a few minutes into his speech trump reacted to the sound of a plane flying overhead as he spoke about mexico, and trade. >> mexico, and i respect mexico, i respect their leaders, what they've done to us is incredible. they're leaders are so much smarter, so much sharper, and it's incredible. in fact, that could be a mexican plane up there, they're getting ready to attack. >> hmm. trump continued to hammer hillary clinton for her involvement with the trade policies of the clinton and obama administrations. >> when you look back and you look at our great leaders, abraham lincoln said we have to protect ourselves from goods pouring into our country. we want to be a manufacturer. we want goods pouring out of our country, and we want to be paid for it. george washington talked about it. so many talked about it. the great ones talked about it. the ones we have today, they want to protect the rest of the world. i think it's almost as though they want to protect the world, and they don't care about our workers. and hillary clinton, honestly, is one of the great abusers.

retirees, our military retirees on that board or in tsa? get rid of all these heeby jobbies they wear -- we need the veterans back in there to take it. they fought for this country and defended it. they'll still do it. thank you. >> you know, and we are looking at that. we're looking at a lot of things. >> trump went on to talk about his support from border patrol agents. donald trump has begun formally vetting prospective vice presidential picks. at the top of the list are former house speaker newt gingrich and new jersey governor chris christie. the associated press is reporting that both received vetting paperwork in the last 24 hours. but while gingrich has recently criticized trump comments, christie is drawing attention as one of his most trusted and loyal advisers behind the scenes. however, christie's job approval rating in new jersey is at a 6 1/2 year low just 26% in a new poll from fairly dickinson university including just 48% of the state's republicans. this is trump declining to say

yesterday whether christie was one of the names at the top of the list. >> scott brown, chris christie, both well known here, are they on your short list? >> well, they're both good guys. i don't want to say short list but certainly they're great people. scott was a very early supporter, and chris was very early after he got out. and they're certainly people i want involved. >> and another rumored candidate, indiana governor mike pence said yesterday that if he is under consideration, he and trump have not talked about it. >> governor, are you being vetted? >> you know, i think you'd have to talk to their campaign about who they're looking at or who they're not looking at. but -- i'll cut to the chase, i haven't spoken to donald trump since before the indiana primary and i certainly have never spoken to him about that topic. >> last night on msnbc, senator bernie sanders responded to a claim from the vice president that sanders is going to endorse hillary clinton. here's what the vice president said followed by sanders' response. >> i want to talk to bernie. bernie's going to endorse her. this is going to work out. you already noticed that same

polling data you reference, democrats are coalescing even before this occurred. >> is joe biden telling the truth or is this a loose interpretation of what you said? >> well, joe and i talked about three weeks ago and as i said right now my hope is that we can reach an agreement on some very important issues, and i can go forward. to the millions of people who supported me and say look, this is the progress that you've made. this is where we're going to go as a country. so i hope it happens. as of this moment, we're not there quite yet. >> there is a growing uproar over that meeting between bill clinton and attorney general loretta lynch. the pair met on the attorney general's plane at a phoenix airport earlier this week, raising questions about what the two may have discussed as the justice department investigates hillary clinton's use of a private e-mail server while secretary of state. here's the attorney general defending the 30-minute conversation with the former president. >> our conversation was a great deal about his grandchildren.

it was primarily social and about our travels. he mentioned the golf he played in phoenix. and he mentioned travels he had had to west virginia. we talked about former attorney general janet reno, for example, whom we both know. but there was no discussion of any matter pending before the department, or any matter pending before any other body. there was no discussion of benghazi, no discussion of the state department e-mails by way of example. >> well the meeting now has republicans renewing their calls to the attorney general to recuse herself from the e-mail investigation. here's donald trump's response when asked if a special counsel should be appointed. >> well, when i first heard that yesterday afternoon, i actually thought they were joking. i thought the people that told me, you know, i said no way. there's just no way that's going to happen. and it happened. and i am just -- i'm flabbergasted by it. >> and president obama was asked about the private meeting yesterday, but ignored the question. but his former adviser, david

axelrod tweeted, quote, i take loretta lynch and bill clinton at their word that their convoe in phoenix didn't touch on probe, but foolish to create such optics. and here's press secretary josh earnest talking about those optics at yesterday's white house press briefing. >> i think what should give people confidence is the 30-year career that attorney general lynch has in keeping the public's trust and making sure that she continues to be an effective advocate for the rule of law, and for the fair administration of justice. she protected the public trust. by prosecuting individuals in both parties. >> well things got combative on capitol hill yesterday between senator ted cruz and homeland security secretary jeh johnson. during a judiciary committee hearing cruz began questioning johnson over whether he had investigated claims by a former employee that law enforcement materials had been systematically scrubbed to remove terms like jihad, muslim, and islam. >> did you or anyone in your

it makes no difference to me in terms of who we need to go after. >> we are following developments out of istanbul this morning. more arrests have been made following another series of predawn raids. turkish officials tell nbc news that 11 people have been taken into custody, including one russian citizen and that brings the total number of people detained in this investigation to 24. it is not known at this time whether any of those are believed to have been involved in tuesday's airport attack. as we've reported, the suspected suicide bombers were russian, uzbek, and kyrgyz nationals. the death toll from that attack stands at 44. one of united states' military's long-standing bans is no more. removing one of the last discriminatory hurdles for americans to serve. >> announcing today that we're ending the ban on transgender americans in the united states military. effective immediately, transgender americans may serve openly. and they can no longer be discharged or otherwise separated from the military just for being transgender.

>> that was defense secretary ash carter making the historic announcement yesterday. it is the latest move in a fundamental shift by the military that included ending of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy back in 2011. carter went on to say the move was the right one to make because only a person's qualifications should matter. >> our mission is to defend this country, and we don't want barriers unrelated to a person's qualification to serve preventing us from recruiting or retaining the soldier, sailor, airman, or marine who can best accomplish the mission. >> carter says the defense department has until next july to fully implement the changes. well today the white house is expected to reveal just how many civilians have been killed by u.s. drone strikes since president obama took office. but many experts say that the actual number is likely much higher than the figure expected to be revealed. according to the associated press, the white house will put the number at roughly 100 people inadvertently killed by 500

drone strikes since 2009. we're told that estimate covers strikes in pakistan, yemen, libya and somalia, but not afghanistan, iraq or syria. the u.s. navy has released a new report concerning the ten american sailors who were detained by iran in january. the 219-page document blames -- two command bolts strayed into iranian waters. according to the report the sailors turned over sensitive information, including pass words and operational capabilities to the revolutionary guards. six officers, and three enlisted sailors have been disciplined or face disciplinary action following that incident. let's turn to business. exactly seven days now from that brexit vote and what a difference a week makes. cn cnbc's lisa bojesen joining us from london. we had the markets diving last week. but some of them have made up ground. >> yeah, we have. in fact when looking at the u.s. indices they've managed to gain

back some 80%, 90% of the post-brexit losses. so we're heading into the right direction. we're closing out not just the month of june, not just the first -- the second quarter rather but the first half of the year, as well. and for the month of june, pretty flat showings, all things considered, down the s&p, relatively unmoved a couple points to the upside. nasdaq underperforming a bit, down by 2% for the month. when putting it all together and looking at the first half performance the dow and the s&p 500 higher by almost 3% with nasdaq underperforming to the tune of almost 3.5%, and i was looking back via some data from my u.s. colleagues stateside that since 1950, where the dow and the s&p 500 when they've ended the first half of the year with a gain, they've then seen the second half gain as well in approximately 75% of the time. so, so we might be heading towards towards even bluer skies ahead during the second half of the year. when looking at nike, the founder, phil knight stepping down as chairman.
