his campaign begins. i want to go live to kelly for the details. looks like maybe a little gingrich, chris christie. >> it looks to be a moment in time. trump is considering two sitting governors and a former speaker of the house. with gingrich we learned because of his strong credentials that part of the republican party and because he knows every inch of capitol hill. it is an essential part of what he wants, someone who could work to fill in a gap trump doesn't have. with gingrich comes some of the volatilities of his tenure as house speaker. strong credentials in the republican party is a plus. not being able to control gingrich is a negative. when you look at the two sitting

governors, chris christie brings the loyalty and political skills and debate skills. he doesn't really give a difference with donald trump, two northeasterners. he is the indiana governor, social conservatives but he is in a tough reelection bid. there are strong indications i'm being told in the last six to eight weeks his star has been rising. the governor is saying he hasn't spoken to donald trump it could change. >> thanks. well, we may learn today how many people have been killed in military and c.i.a. drone strielks in pakistan and president obama expected to announce the numbers as well as an executive order.

barack. he joins me now. welcome. let's walk through sort of the money side of all of the fundraising for donald trump. you said last month we were going to get $32 million in the door. it seems it is only 2 million. why is that? >> yeah, first of all there is a big difference between campaign finance and republican national committee and donald's campaign. most of those ads are negative ads. neither hillary clinton who doesn't need anymore negative ratings -- >> so are donald's.

>> equally, right? two-time state senator, secretary of state, wife of a president, tremendously qualified. if you want status quo and eight more years of what we have had she is probably a terrific pick. if you want disruption or something other than that it's about an option then donald ends up being the option. it's a little bit like taking on intercontinental. it is now much more insignificant. so looking at donald's campaign financing, he gets more free tv time than any individual in history. >> but it was having so much less money than barack obama that hurt mitt romney.

last few weeks that have business leaders who could support him in a big way scratching their head, mexicans, muslims, women. you're one of his closest confidants. why does he continue to do this? >> when we talk about globalization versus a nation state, the inequality and political difference across the world is what's evidence. people are angry, they are upset. after 2008 there has been restitution but it went to the upper 1% of income earners. >> people voted for brexit but it was change with no solution. >> if you'll give me two minutes i'll tell you how he solve it. when he talks about mexico and islam he is right. the mexicans are our greatest ally. if you look at north america it is protected by seas.

>> so even though he is getting a new trial, there are many skeptics still out there who don't see this as clearly as you do. are you absolutely confident that he will be freed? >> i mean, the skeptics are free to believe what they want but i can tell you the innocence project, every lawyer who ever touched the case, every investigator who looked at it and now, the court itself, which has vacated the conviction, by the way. you started out by saying convicted killer. he is no longer convicted. he is now an innocent man. so there are so many people whose hands this case has passed through who believe he's innocent. >> walk us through it. where did things go wrong in terms of the trial? >> a lot of it went wrong in the investigation itself when the police focusing on him exclusively, they began focusing on him and i documented all of this in the book, they focused on him even before it was discovered that heyman had been actually killed. they basically started creating a case around him where he really was hurt the most was

that his defense attorney was completely compromised at the time of his trial. she was very sick, she was almost incoherent by the end of the trial, she was not able to give him the defense he deserved. she didn't even do simple things like check out an alibi witness. >> how has he changed over the last 17 years? >> adnan has always been, his nature has always been the same which is why so many people stood by him. that's that he has always been a very gentle, kind, generous spirit person and he's still like that. he really hasn't changed that much. he has never had a violent or difficult temperament before he was arrested and he's had a clean record for 17 years. he's never even had a verbal fight with anybody. >> walk me through the last 17 years for his family and you, as i said earlier, you are a family friend but this appears to be your life's work. >> you know, for the family and me, i think we really felt like we hit a wall up until the post-conviction hearing a few years ago. that's when i reached out to sarah and she brought new life back into the case. we really, when we were denied

the post-conviction by the same judge who just granted him a new trial, we felt that we were at the end of the road and were starting to get resigned he would live and die in prison. >> i got to ask before we go, why serial? how did this happen? how did you know to call them? >> i didn't know. i just was looking for a journalist who would be interested in taking a look at his case, and she was the first name i came across. she had done some work, she had covered some of his attorney's stuff before and she didn't even know she was doing a podcast. it happened and nobody expected the success that it got. >> well, congratulations. thank you for joining us this morning. we have to turn now to the olympics. look at this video. these images, that's swimmer missy franken moments after she qualified for her second olympics. she finished second last night in the women's 200 meter freestyle.

>> there was no discussion of any matter pending before the department or any matter pending before any other body, there was no discussion of benghazi, no discussion of the state department e-mails by way of example. >> so social or not, the optics are creating this political uproar causing some democrats to cringe and republicans to cry foul over it. want to start with justice correspondent pete williams. pete, is this a departure from what loretta lynch has previously said? >> well, the justice department says no, thomas. they say that she's been broadly hinting that this is the step she was going to take just as recently as a couple of weeks ago when she appeared on all the sunday morning programs, including "meet the press." she said she would be guided by i don't think those were exact words, but she said this would go through the career justice department prosecutor. she was responding to the question of whether she would recuse herself and she said she wouldn't discuss
