"first look" starts right now. well, good morning and thanks for joining us today, i'm betty nguyen. it was a busy holiday weekend for the presumptive presidential candidates. hillary clinton sits down with the fbi for a marathon interview

and donald trump stirs up some controversy with a tweet that's being called anti-semitic. msnbc's kasie hunt has more. >> hillary clinton this weekend trying to turn the page. on an fbi investigation into her private e-mails. her team is hoping this means she'll be cleared of wrongdoing, before she accepts the democratic nomination for president just weeks from now. charging ahead with vetting potential vice presidents, hopefuls fanning out to defend her sunday. >> i think that there won't be an indictment and i think that means that she did what many secretaries of state have done in the past. >> reporter: clinton taking in a saturday evening performance of "hamilton" on broadway after she and top aide sheryl mills had spept the morning at fbi headquarters. officials from the justice department and the fbi interviewing her for more than three hours. about her use of private e-mail as secretary of state. clinton telling nbc's chuck todd she wanted to get it over with. >> i've been eager to do it, and i was pleased to have the opportunity to assist the

department in bringing its review to a conclusion. >> reporter: meanwhile, donald trump dealing with his own problems. his team still not explaining the image posted to his twitter account on saturday. attacking clinton as corrupt, showing what appeared to be a star of david over a pile of money. an image that also appeared two weeks earlier on twitter. posted by a user who promoted other racist imagery. on trump's feed the image was quickly replaced with a modified version. but with two of the six points of the star still visible. his former campaign manager defended him. >> a tweet is a simple tweet and the bottom line is you can read into things that aren't there. this is a simple star -- >> reporter: but the anti-defamation league took him to task saying, quote, it is long overdue for mr. trump to reject the anti-semites and racist with the same clarity and energy that he's brought to the campaign trail when calling out other candidates. >> now trump has yet to comment on that tweet. he spent the weekend meeting with one of his rumored vp

candidates, indiana governor mike pence visited trump and his family at their fifth avenue headquarters. pence's spokesperson told the media, quote, nothing was offered and nothing was accepted during the meeting. trump will visit the battleground state of north carolina tomorrow. president obama makes his first campaign appearance alongside hillary clinton just three hours down the road in charlotte. for more on the 2016 campaign we're joined by nbc's edward lawrence. good morning, edward. so we can expect any fireworks tomorrow when trump takes the stage in north carolina while clinton and the president are just a few hours down the road? >> betty, you bet. big fireworks with different colors and shapes. hillary clinton trying to shake off the image that she was being questioned by the fbi for those three hours over the weekend. president obama, as you said, will meet with with hillary clinton for the very first time in charlotte, north carolina, in a well-coordinated photo-op. now the two of them are expected to criticize donald trump. donald trump is having his own rally about two hours, three hours from charlotte, north carolina, in raleigh. trump is expected to criticize

hillary clinton, saying that a vote for her is a vote for a third term of president obama. both campaigns are putting a lot of money into north carolina. hillary clinton believes that she can sway voters there because of the controversy over the gender bathroom bill. donald trump believes that he can hold the voters in his camp. this is a tough week for donald trump. he has to have a better week this week. his campaign has faltered over the past several weeks. betty? >> all right, thank you so much. an apparent suicide bomber died and two security officers were injured in an attack this morning near the u.s. consulate in saudi arabia. the attempted strike occurred in the city of jeddah. according to the state department it was apparently timed to coincide with the july fourth celebrations. five staff members and four security personnel were killed in an attack on the same consulate back in december of 2004. today's attempt at consulate came after a massive car bomb killed at least 167 and injured 185 in baghdad on sunday morning. it is the third terror attack in recent days and it follows last

week's deadly massacre on istanbul's ataturk airport and the brutal killing that left 20 hostages at an upscale bangladesh restaurant dead. isis has taken immediate responsibility for the baghdad attack. the massacre occurred when iraqis mostly shiites gathered over the weekend to celebrate one of the last evenings of the muslim holy month of ramadan. a huge car bomb exploded killing scores of families. isis has so far fulfilled its promise to ramp up attacks in the final days of ramadan. a virginia teen was seriously injured yesterday in a bizarre explosion in new york city's central park. police say conner golden was jumping off some rocks in the park with friends when he landed on a device that exploded. part of his leg had to be amputated. that blast sent the nation's most populous city on edge ahead of the july fourth holiday. investigators say the homemade firework does not appear to be related to terrorism and they do not believe the victim and his friends built the device. now, out of caution, though, police used sniffer dogs to search the rest of the park into

the evening. meanwhile, the 18-year-old remains hospitalized in serious, but stable, condition. the father of that little boy who was killed by an alligator last month at disney world told officials that two alligators were involved in the attack. matt graves says that he was attacked by a second gator while trying to rescue his son lane. now this is according to e-mails from the fire department obtained by the orlando sentinel. mr. graves needed stitches and antibiotics for gator bites that he received. 2-year-old lane was dragged into the water while standing only feet from the beach near disney's grand floridian resort. his body was found intact just 15 yards from the shore. award winning author elie wiesel was laid to rest yesterday in new york. the nobel peace prize winner and holocaust survivor died on saturday at the age of 87. word of his death sent the world mourning for the man known as a champion for human rights and tolerance. nbc's morgan radford has more. >> reporter: a community of mourners, lifting elie wiesel's

serena williams took just 51 minutes to win 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the round of 16. this was also, get this, williams' 300th grand slam victory. congrats to her. american van dewei also moved on. now, meteorologist bonnie schneider joins us for a look at this holiday forecast. the pressure is on a lot of people waiting to see these fireworks you going to rain them out? >> i think we have some rain and unfortunately it's dangerous because we actually have flooding to talk about across kentucky, lower sections of illinois, and even southeast missouri lightning with this system, working its way through paducah right now. so watch as the rain pushes towards kentucky, and really the entire storm system works its way eastward. that means that west virginia, under the gun once again for flooding. now we could see several inches at times so be careful out there. washington, d.c., you may also have to deal with some storms just in time for the fireworks unfortunately.

but look how hot it's going to be in dallas, texas, up to 85. nice and cool in chicago. the heat in texas is going to be a big story going in to the rest of the week, because the heat is building. in fact, it's going to feel like it's in the triple digits across most of the state. some of the heat indexes are all the way up to 110. i can't even imagine with the humidity how hot that's going to feel. also for the beaches of the carolinas like wilmington, and into myrtle beach. it's really going to feel hot out there. even if you're right on the shoreline. across the country, for the fourth, looking great in new england. boston, and the cape looks great. but we'll watch out for some storms building right in the center of the country. bet sni >> all right. it's going to be a hot one for a lot of folks. thank you so much. chaos at a kenny chesney concert sends dozens to the e.r. plus marvel comic has a new super villain. can you guess who it is? you're watching "first look." i'm worried i can't find

growing wild fires. in central california the curry fire prompted evacuation warnings since igniting friday evening. officials say it's spreading at a dangerous rate. meanwhile, the deer fire has burned nearly 1800 acres, threatening about 100 homes. northern california's trailhead fire has scorched over 5,000 acres according to cal fire officials on sunday. the infernos were being fuelled in part by conditions from the state's five-year drought. officials are warning residents fireworks could ignite new blazes. security officials in bangladesh continue to search for anyone involved in planning saturday's hostage situation in the country's capital. the bangladeshi prime minister confirmed in a televised address that one person had been arrested when the crisis ended. the crisis left 20 hostages and six other attackers dead. police had tightened security around the site and the hospital where survivors are being treated. the prime minister visited a memorial to the victims earlier this morning. a sterlington, louisiana, police officer is dead after a drunk driver crashed her truck

into a traffic stop early sunday morning. two other officers were treated at a local hospital. sterlington's police chief says that five-year veteran who was killed was actually planning to retire from the force making july 3rd to the 4th his last full-time shift. sad for him and his family. all right, dozens of hospitalized -- are hospitalized after a rowdy kenny chesney concert in pittsburgh over the weekend. 57 emergency medical transports were requested? and several arrests were made for trespassing. public intoxication and ticket robbery. this isn't the first time a chesney concert has gotten out of hand in pittsburgh. in 2013, 73 people were arrested at a trashed concert venue after nearly five years, though, nasa's juneau spacecraft is set to reach jupiter this evening ending the epic 1.8 billion mile trip. the ploeb will examine the planet for about 20 months and transmit images and data back too earth before burning up in early 2018. finland hosted the 21st

trump has said he's already culled the vp nominees down to a short list of a few names. one of those rumored picks former house speaker newt gingrich. he was at the atlantic's aspen ideas festival this weekend where the subject was sure to come up. >> so, none of you should bet on all this. it's wild speculation. i suspect if it did come to anything, we'd have to have a very, very long talk, and then depending on that talk, of course i'd have to sit down with donald and have another long talk. >> at some point, even vice president joe biden gave gingrich a little jab on the all-veep talk. >> i'd like to ask one question before i begin. newt, are you going to do it? i think he needs the help. yes. >> the question was should i -- >> should he be vice president? i got to tell him, anyway, it's a hell of a job. get a big pay raise. it's all worth it. >> as for clinton, we know she's already had a private sit-down

with massachusetts senator elizabeth warren. and has already brought warren out on the campaign trail. well, yesterday clinton's other would-be veeps took to the sunday shows to vigorously defend her following that marathon fbi interview. >> i think the secretary's made it very clear she understands that she's got to earn people's trust. she's going to work very, very hard to do that. and i give her credit for saying that she's made some mistakes. >> what i have seen working with secretary clinton is that she is a steady hand. judgment is what it's all about. and i think she has exercised sound judgment throughout. >> i trust hillary clinton in part because for a whole lot of reasons, in part because i know how she started her career, advocating for the children's defense fund. she didn't go off to manhattan to make a lot of money. >> and that, my friends is your morning dish of "scrambled politics." all right, 19 minutes past the hour. here in the studio to talk more veepstakes, raul reyes. he is an attorney, a columnist, an nbcnews.com contributor among many, many other things. thanks for joining us this morning.

>> happy fourth of july. i want to stay on hillary clinton for just a second. as we watched all those possible veep candidates on the talk shows was that a smart move on her campaign's part to really see them out there endorsing her under the limelight with the pressure? >> yes, it was a smart move for two reasons. number one you can think of it as an audition for the job. part of their job as vice president if they get the nod is to serve as effective surrogates. so they're out there sunday morning showing that they can do that. and secondly with the fbi investigation that was going on this weekend they serve as sort of a distraction from that. in that sense actually with the investigation, that interview going on over july fourth weekend here was probably good for hillary clinton because besides from the political world not that many people were probably pag attention. >> among all of these we saw is there anyone in particular that you think might get the thumbs up? >> i think the two leading people, one is elizabeth warren because she is a very strong progressive. she could serve as a bridge in a sense to the bernie sanders crowd.

she her progressive credentials impeccable. and lately they've had more of a camarader camaraderie. in the past -- >> there's an all-female ticket. >> but that's historic. >> absolutely. >> so there's -- there's that sense. and also i would definitely say that huian cost row if he won the ticket that would electrify the latino community. hillary clinton's campaign need an aspirational message for latinos. it's not enough just to count on voters to turn out because they don't like trump. they need a big push -- >> let me get to trump. because the question is, is he going to go with someone staef or is he going to stir the spot with this pick? >> his choices are all over the place. you mentioned mike pence. the problem with mike pence, i think the big question is, most of the country doesn't know who he is. there's a limited amount of time, if he were to be vice president, to introduce him to the nation. >> so who do you think he's going to pick? >> i think he's going to pick chris christie. >> really? >> because chris christie is totally loyal. chris christie is a great attack dog. the problem there, chris christie has 26 approval ratings at home. in fact in a farley dickinson

an army veteran from minnesota has fought for freedom. but this week he saved freedom. an eagle. reporter boyd hubbard has the incredible rescue story from rush city. >> reporter: on rush lake there's no mistaking the dock belonging to jason gal vin. >> in the breeze, just rings freedom. >> reporter: but this fourth of july weekend -- >> very patriotic. >> reporter: -- jason has taken his patriotism to new heights. that's the eagle's nest at which jason blanched yesterday as he was making a run for bait. but then this caught his eye. a young bald eagle hanging upside down from a rope. >> right then, i thought, man, that just doesn't look good. >> reporter: turns out others have been watching the eagle with concern, too. for more than two days. >> that's when we decided we really need to make some calls. >> reporter: jason's wife called everyone she could think of from the fire department to the dnr. >> it was one of those things what do we do, what can we do? >> reporter: the eagle was just too high.
