fbi sits down with the fbi for an interview and donald trump stirs up controversy. casey hunt has more. >> hillary clinton this weekend trying to turn the page. on an fbi vestigation into her private e-mails. her team is hoping this means she'll be cleared of wrongdoing, before she accepts the democratic nomination for president just weeks from now. charging ahead with vetting potential vice presidents, hopefuls fanning out to defend her sunday. >> i think that there won't be an indictment and i think that means that she did what many secretaries of state have done in the past. >> reporter: clinton taking in a saturday evening performance of "hamilton" on broadway after she and top aide sheryl mills had spent the morning at fbi headquarters. officials from the justice department and the fbi interviewing her for more than three hours. about her use of private e-mail as secretary of state. clinton telling nbc's chuck todd she wanted to get it over with.

>> i've been eager to do it, and i was pleased to have the opportunity to assist the department in bringing its review to a conclusion. >> reporter: meanwhile, donald trump dealing with his own problems. his team still not explaining the image posted to his twitter account on saturday. attacking clinton as corrupt, showing what appeared to be a star of david over a pile of money. an image that also appeared two weeks earlier on twitter. posted by a user who promoted other racist imagery. on trump's feed the image was quickly replaced with a modified version. but with two of the six points of the star still visible. his former campaign manager defended him. >> a tweet is a simple tweet and the bottom line is you can read into things that aren't there. this is a simple star -- >> reporter: but the anti-defamation league took him to task saying, quote, it is long overdue for mr. trump to reject the anti-semites and racist with the same clarity and energy that he's brought to the campaign trail when calling out other candidates. >> now trump has yet to comment on that tweet.

he spent the weekend meeting with one of his rumored vp candidates, indiana governor mike pence visited trump and his family at their fifth avenue headquarters. pence's spokesperson told the media, quote, nothing was offered and nothing was accepted during the meeting. trump will visit the battleground state of north carolina tomorrow. president obama makes his first campaign appearance alongside hillary clinton just three hours down the road in charlotte. for more on the 2016 campaign we're joined by nbc's edward lawrence. can we expect any fireworks tomorrow when trump takes the stam in north carolina while clinton and the president are just a few hours down the road? >> you bet, betty. big fireworks with different colors and shapes. hillary clinton trying to shake the image she had over the weekend by being interviewed by the fbi for three hours and that possible criminal case. president obama will join hillary on tuesday in charlotte, north carolina, for their first appearance together.

country back. what i'm saying today, i want my life back and it begins right now. two security officers were injured near the u.s. consulate in saudi arabia. according to the state department, it was apparently timed to coincide with fourth of july celebrations. five staff members and four security personnel were killed in an attack on the same consulate back in december of 2004. today's attempted consulate hit came after a massive car bomb killed 167 and injured on sunday morning. it is the third terror attack in recent days and follows last week's deadly massacre on istanbul's airport and the brutal killing that left 20 hostages at an upscale bangladesh restaurant dead. isis has taken immediate responsibility and celebrate one of the last. a huge car bomb exploded killing scores of families.

isis has so far fulfilled its promise to ramp up attacks in the final days of ramadan. a virginia teen was seriously injured yesterday in a bizarre explosion in new york city's central park. police say conner golden was jumping off some rocks in the park with friends when he landed on a device that exploded. part of his leg had to be amputated. that blast sent the most popular city on edge. the homemade firework does not appear to be related to terrorism and they do not believe the victim and his friends built the device. out of caution, police used sniffer dogs to search the rest of the park into the evening. meanwhile, the 18-year-old remains hospitalized in serious, but stable condition. the father of the little boy who was killed by an alligator last month at disney world told officials that two alligators were involved in the attack. now, this is according to e-mails from the fire department

obtained by "orlando sentinel." he needed stitches and antibiotics for gator bites he received. 2-year-old lane was drag under to the water while standing feet from the beach. his body was found in tact just 15 yards from the shore. award winner author elie wiesel was laid to rest yesterday in new york. he died on saturday at the age of 87. word of his death sent the world mourning for the man known as a champion for human rights and tolerance. nbc morgan radford has more. >> reporter: a community of mourners lifting wiesel's casket as they celebrate his life. >> he inspired us and gave us a sense of responsibility. >> reporter: pictured here at age 16 in the bunk of a nazi concentration camp just days after it was liberated by u.s. troops. wiesel survived the holocaust and his critically acclaimed novel "night" later becoming an

many in the west are escaping raging wildfires. the curry fire prompted evacuation warnings since igniting friday evening. it's spreading at a dangerous rate. meanwhile, the deer fire has burned nearly 1,800 acres threatening 100 homes. trail head fire has scorched over 5,000 acres according to cal fire officials. the infernoes being fueled in part by conditions from the state's five-year drought. officials are warning residents that fireworks could ignite new blazes. be careful out there on this fourth of july. security officials in bangladesh searching for anyone in the country's situation. confirmed in a televised address that one person was arrested when the crisis ended. that crisis left 20 hostages and six other attackers dead. police had tightened security around the site and the hospital where survivors are being treated. a louisiana police officer

is dead after a driver crashed, two others officers retreated for help. the police chief says the five-year veteran who was killed was planning to retire from the force making july 3rd to 4th his last full-time shift. so difficult for his family. so, dozens were hospitalized after a rowdy kenny chesney concert in pittsburgh over the weekend. 57 emergency medical transports were requested and several arrests were made for trespassing, public intoxication and ticket robbery. this is not the first time a chesny concert got out of hand in pittsburgh. 73 people were arrested at concert venue. watch out captain america because marvel's next comic book villain is none other than donald trump. yes, you heard me right. though, he is defeated in the series, his dying words are a promise to crush captain america with his "powerful hands."

all right, here is your fourth of july edition of scrambled politics. it is full steam ahead for donald trump and hillary clinton. both presumptive presidential nominees looking to confirm their picks in the next several weeks. not much time left. trump has moved into a new phase of the veeps stakes process and that is interviewing the candidates. he met privately with mike pence this weekend. he also called the nominees to a short list of a few names. one of those picks, former house speaker newt gingrich. he was at the aspen ideas festival this weekend where the subject was sure to come up. >> so, none of you should bet on this as the wild speculation. i suspect if it did come to anything, we'd have to have a very, very long talk and then depending on that talk, we'd have to sit down with donald and have another long talk. >> at some point even vice president joe biden gave a

little jab on the veep talk. >> one question before we begin. newt, are you going to do it? the question was, should he be vice president? i tell him, anyway, it's a hell of a job. get a big pay raise. it's all worth it. >> as for clinton, we know she's already had a private sit down with massachusetts senator elizabeth warren and has already brought warren out on the campaign trail. well, yesterday clinton's other would-be veeps took to the shows to defend her following that fbi interview. >> i think the secretary has made it very clear. she understands that she has to to earn people's trust and she will work very hard to do that. i dwav her credit for saying she made some mistakes. >> what i have seen with secretary clinton, she is a steady hand. judgment is what it is all about. i think she has exercised sound judgment throughout. >> i trust hillary clinton in part because for a lot of

great job. he has a lot of appeal. he is possible connection to blue collar white voters, especially men, which clinton has struggled to connect with. he also, a great reason why he could get the nod -- >> do you think he's going to get it? >> i'm not sure. i'm not going to go out on a limb. the great reason why he might is ohio. he's popular in the state and very well known. very well known in the midwest and great at delivering the talking points and staying on message. >> i want to shift to trump because a lot of people wondering who is trump going to pick? is it going to be a safe pick that would really help perhaps party establishment and feel more comfortable with this ticket or is he going to be trump and go out on a limb and do it his own way? >> he is going to be trump. probably the closest thing they have to a safe pick is newt gingrich because that's who republican voters want and that's who the republican establishment wants. >> but does the general population want? >> they want someone with more government experience to balance

out trump. they also see him as someone who could compliment trump and could also serve as a good surrogate for. the problem is to a lot of people, newt gingrich is the '90s and even then he was not very popular. he has a lot of -- >> do they want him back, again? >> he has a lot of baggage. in 2012 the most disliked politician in washington. the fact is he knows how to work the hill and speaker of the house. >> who is his biggest competition? >> chris christie because he's so loyal. he's loyal and mocking people on "saturday night live" and they make fun of him. that's what donald trump prizes above all. prides loyalty and chris christie has been uniformally in line. newt gingrich has -- >> i wanted to ask you that quickly. does trump need a yes man or want someone who is going to help him with ideas and really butt heads at times when needed? >> trump needs someone who will challenge him to perfect his
