it's tusz, july 5th. right now on "first look" exciting independence day celebrations went off without a hitch for most but there was also some dangerous moments, as well. politics converge on north carolina as hillary clinton campaigns with president obama while donald trump tries out another potential running mate. get ready for two massive jackpots. plus a whole lot more as we kick off a holiday shortened week. of success after five years and just under 2 billion miles, nasa's juneau spacecraft successfully entered jupiter's orbit. described as a one-shot attempt by lockheed martin space exploration director the final engine burn was especially harrowing due to the 48-minute delay in radio signals heading back from the gas giant. mission control knew they would not find out if the half hour maneuver was successful until it was already over. but the cheering relief came, along with well wishes. google created a special doodle to celebrate. and star trek's captain kirk sent his congratulations into the depths of space. on behalf of the probe the team triumphantly tweeted i'm ready to unlock all your secrets, jupiter. deal with it. juneau now starts a 20-month mission studying the mammoth planet. donald trump and hillary clinton are set for a collision course in north carolina today as both prepare to hold duelling rallies there. a win in the state could give clinton a resounding electoral victory in november. and if trump pulls off a win he

could couple the state's electoral votes with others like ohio to score an upset. and it comes as the latest "usa today" suffolk national poll shows clinton beating trump by just five points. that same poll had clinton on top by 11 points back in april. meanwhile, trump now says clinton's campaign is ridiculous to claim his tweet this weekend showing clinton with what appeared to be the star of david over a pile of cash is anti-semitic. now that comes as the competition to serve as his vp grows. nbc's kelly o'donnell has more. >> reporter: celebrating the fourth in indiana. governor mike pence joining a parade of potential trump running mates. a social conservative up for re-election. pence spent part of the holiday weekend with trump. >> we'll always count it a privilege that we were able to spend time as a family with a family that we truly hope is the first family of the united states. >> reporter: using one of his golf resorts to tee up speculation about vp contenders.

on twitter, trump gave the pence family a thumbs up. very impressed, great people. and announced a visit from rising gop store iowa senator joni ernst, who served in iraq and delivered her party's state of the union response last year. for any of the running mate short listers, responding to trump-made controversies is part of the job. more fallout over this design used in a tweet to criticize hillary clinton derided as anti-semitic for the star of david shape over $100 bills. the same graphic appeared two weeks earlier on an account that promoted racist imagery. trump's campaign altered the picture and called it a correction. but trump blamed a dishonest media and said it could be seen as a sheriff's star. clinton's campaign responded in a statement. this blatantly anti-semitic image is part of a pattern that should give voters major cause for concern. trump issued a statement, no

apology, no explanation of where he got the offending image, but a counterpunch, accusing clinton of trying to divert attention from the dishonest behavior of herself and her husband. >> as for clinton, she will travel aboard air force one with president obama for their first joint rally in charlotte this afternoon. trump went after clinton, though, tweeting, quote, why is president obama allowed to use air force one on the campaign trail with crooked hillary? she is flying with him tomorrow. who pays? trump will campaign just a few hours down the road from clinton. he'll be joined by rumored vp candidate senator bob corker of tennessee. not all of those fourth of july celebrations went off without a hitch. i want you to take a look at this frightening scene in kentucky. a firework suddenly misfires into the crowd. several people were treated on scene by emergency crew. at least four people were taken to a hospital with minor injuries. all right so if you were watching pbs' live capital fourth broadcast last night from

washington, d.c. you might have noticed something looked a little off. one twitter user who did notice summed up the social media outrage posting, not cool, pbs. fake footage of fireworks on the fourth? it's cloudy and rainy in d.c. these shots are clearly not from tonight. sure enough moments after the show ended producers from capitol concerts owned up to splicing in footage from previous years tweeting, we showed a combination of the best fireworks from this year and previous years. it was the patriotic thing to do. as you can imagine, online reaction was swift and savage. meanwhile, as our nation paused to celebrate the fourth, police kept close watch amidst a high security alert. nbc's chris pa loan reports. >> reporter: from coast-to-coast, in big cities and small towns, americans celebrated a star-spangled fourth with music, barbecues and fireworks. under the thousands who lined boston's esplanade to listen to the boston pops orchestra.

>> i am so happy i made it here. god bless america. >> this is like christmas for us here. >> reporter: in new york more than 50,000 fireworks shows lit up the night sky over the east river from the brooklyn bridge to midtown. police said there was no specific threat to the festivities, but heavy police presence, that's become standard at every major event since 9/11, was as evident as ever. earlier, not far from the statue of liberty, the country welcomed nearly two dozen immigrants as new citizens. a scene repeated across the country this july 4th, and in philadelphia, descendants of those who signed the declaration of independence tapped the liberty bell 13 times for the original 13 states. bad weather made celebrations in the nation's capital a bit soggy and forced president obama's final white house fourth of july celebration indoors. >> it -- it -- it's important to remember what a miracle this country is. how incredible -- how incredibly

lucky we are that people generations ago were willing to take up arms and fight for our freedom. italian police tell nbc that they have made an arrest in connection with the murder of a missing american college student. the body of 19-year-old beau solomon was found in the tiber river three days after he vanished. solomon was a student from the university of wisconsin-madison. he went missing friday just after visiting a pub within hours of arriving for an exchange program at john cabot university. his parents say thousands of dollars were charged to their son's credit card in milan. a 40-year-old homeless man has been charged in connection with the crime. a suicide bombing rocked one of islam's holiest sites killing four saudi security officers yesterday. this was part of a series of bombings that hit three different cities across saudi arabia and it follows a string

of deadly sigh sis attacks around the world, all taking place during the muslim holy month of ramadan. nbc's bill neely has those details. >> reporter: minutes after a bomb attack outside the second holiest site of islam where the prophet muhammad is buried. this is medina, the police men the target. isis is suspected, though no claim of responsibility. a symbolic blow to saudi arabia's rulers. one of three attacks there in a day. earlier, controlled explosions outside the american consulate in jeddah where a suicide bomber blew himself up after he was stopped by security. no americans were hurt. in a third city, another bomber tried to kill shia muslims at a mosque. in neighboring iraq over the weekend, carnage. it's iraq's worst bombing for a decade. timed like the saudi attacks for the end of the holy month of ramadan, when isis urged its followers to strike hard.

on friday night in bangladesh, three american university students were among 20 foreigners killed at a restaurant. the worst attack in that country's history. as isis loses ground in iraq, it strikes back globally, hoping to win recruits, with high casualty, high-profile attacks. the isis assault over ramadan spans three continents from the asian strike in bangladesh to five attacks in the mideast. from turkey, to paris, and another isis-inspired massacre in orlando. nearly 400 dead in four weeks. >> this is an isis move to reassert itself, to show its support base that it's actually winning, not moving. >> reporter: and it now has amid baghdad's bloodshed, the deadliest attack it has ever staged. bill neely, nbc news, london. back here in the u.s. a heat wave hitting much of america. your weather is next. plus getting used to kevin

welcome back, i'm bonnie schneider. we are facing a really big heat wave that's developing across much of the central plains. across texas, oklahoma, and even into kansas. a lot of that heat also pushing its way to the east. 17 million people today at risk for high heat and dangerous humidity, as well. high temperatures are soaring well into the triple digits. and it will feel like it's even hotter than that in some places. look at this, above normal across texas, kentucky. not quite yet for new york, getting into the '90s. but you will, looking at the heat building wednesday and into thursday. we're anticipating this to be a widespread major heat wave. working its way all the way up to philadelphia by thursday, 94 degrees. and there really isn't much relief in sight. this heat will stick around straight into the weekend, as well, as temperatures will continue to be hot. elsewhere across the country, cooler weather towards seattle with a high of 67. overall, though, i think the

heat is the big story for today, betty. >> all right. heating up out there. thank you, bonnie. well, many americans were seeing red, white and blue, many florida residents can't seem to get rid of another color, green. four counties and popular beach destinations are under a state of emergency due to toxic algae. swimming advisories threw cold water on many of the sunshine state's july fourth festivities. locals are not happy with the pace of response. and there is no clear idea when the algae will dissipate. a frightening scene in rhode island. a single engine plane pulling a banner dipped nose first into the water. the lucky pilot was unharmed. he was plucked from the waves by a passing good samaritan. >> i don't know, man, his engine stopped, and went in the water. about ten seconds of gliding. >> the coast guard is monitoring the area and will try to salvage the plane. all right. so you feeling lucky? the mega millions jackpot is now $449 million with a cool $313 million show me the money cash

option. boy does that sound good. the odds of hitting, though, all six numbers tonight, 1 in almost 259 million. powerball stands at $257 million with slightly longer odds for wednesday's drawing. jaws is back. joey chestnut set a new record at nathan's hot dog eating competition at new york's coney island. he smanged to snarf down 70, yes, 7-0, hot dogs and buns in just ten minutes. beating runner up matt stoney by a comfortable 17 franks. break out the tums. now to sports, kevin durant's move from oklahoma city to golden state is starting to sink in around the nba. and among the warriors faithful, as well. >> he'll make a great asset to the team. he's a great player. >> it's an embarrassment of riches if you will. >> i feel like nobody's going to be able to beat the warriors for the next four or five years. >> durant is the nba's 2014 mvp.

he joins current back-to-back mvp steph curry along with klay thompson and a bevy of other stars. the 27-year-old durant is also a four-time nba scoring champ. he'll earn over $54 million during his new two-year deal. the miami heat are hoping to retain 12-time all-star dwyane wade. pat riley is reportedly dangling a two-year, $40 million contract his way. but, will it be enough? one of the best ceremonial first pitches we've ever seen. check that out. simone biles at a houston astros game. the texan is part of the u.s. olympic women's gymnastic team headed to rio and favored to bring home the gold and clearly you can see why. then there was a scary moment in the pole vault during the u.s. olympic track and field trials. watch joey's second attempt at the opening height. uh-oh. his pole snapped in two sending him to the mat. luckily, he was okay after the accident. but, he failed to make the cut for rio. duelling new polls just out.

when those who gave trump and clinton negative ratings were asked to choose between the two candidates. 26% chose trump. 19% picked clinton. and a whopping 44% said they were undecided. the white house is banning cabinet members from speaking at the democratic national convention this month according to "the new york times." the ban comes as a handful of obama's cabinet members from tom perez to julianne castro are floated as potential running mates for hillary clinton. the ban was issued by the white house chief of staff according to the "times." donald trump plans to unveil his chosing running mate in three weeksbut indiana state law may make the decision for him. the state's governor mike pence has been on trump's vp short list for some time. his odds for the job may have grown since this weekend's meeting with the presumptive nominee. however, pence who is seeking a second term as governor would have to withdraw as a candidate for governor by july 15th in order to allow indiana republican party leaders to nominate a new candidate should

elections. and in 2008 obama surprised a lot of people by winning the state. it has a lot of millennial voters. a lot of african-americans, and those are the type of voters that hillary really wants to get. she wants to rebuild the obama coalition that was so effective in 2008 and 2012. >> why now? judge have they all descended there today? >> i think it's a way to show that the democratic party is unifying. look at how obama's going down to north carolina with clinton. you don't see that with a lot of the former rivals of donald trump. you haven't seen, you know, say ted cruz, marco rubio, jeb bush, appearing with trump, and that's a real problem for him, because he's not able to show that the whole republican party is behind him. >> clinton and president obama were originally, though, expected to make, what, their first campaign to the in wisconsin. but that was postponed in the wake of the orlando shooting. so will we still see them both campaign there together? >> i guarantee you that i don't know exactly if obama will go to wisconsin with hillary. but wisconsin will be a really

important state because it has a lot of the rust belt middle class voters that hillary needs because she's worried that some of those union voters will go to trump. and wisconsin is kind of known as this labor hotbed. you saw that big fight with governor scott walker offer the unions, and so you will see a lot of democratic surrogates on the trail in wisconsin with clinton. >> okay. meanwhile, though, donald trump is really taking issue with hillary clinton riding on air force one with the president today. clearly, the optics of this, sends a powerful message. does that resonate with voters? >> i don't think it does. and it's hard for trump to make that plane argument since he has his own big 747 trump jet -- >> well he's saying, you know, who's paying for it. >> i think if trump was being -- if he was going to a state with a sitting republican president, i don't think he would have these objections if -- if that republican president wanted to take him on his plane. and i don't think voters really care about, you know, who's billing who. i think there are larger issues in this election that i don't

good morning. it is tuesday, july 5th, i'm chris jansing. a series of suicide bombings in saudi arabia has capped a string of deadly terror attacks overseas. three different cities across soush were rocked by suicide bombs yesterday. the attacks began in jeddah after a bomber was stopped by security personnel near the u.s. consulate. the bomber detonated an explosive belt, killing himself and injuring two others. the saudi interior ministry said. hours later a pair of suicide bombers struck near the mosque in katif, a ministry source confirming that to nbc news. according to the ap the attack did not appear to cause any injuries. shortly after that a suicide bombing took place in medina near the headquarters of the prophet's mosque, considered to be the second holiest site in islam. four security officers were ed
