good morning. it is tuesday, july 5th, i'm chris jansing. a series of suicide bombings in saudi arabia has capped a string of deadly terror attacks overseas. three different cities across soush were rocked by suicide bombs yesterday. the attacks began in jeddah after a bomber was stopped by security personnel near the u.s. consulate. the bomber detonated an explosive belt, killing himself and injuring two others. the saudi interior ministry said. hours later a pair of suicide bombers struck near the mosque in katif, a ministry source confirming that to nbc news. according to the ap the attack did not appear to cause any injuries. shortly after that a suicide bombing took place in medina near the headquarters of the prophet's mosque, considered to be the second holiest site in islam. four security officers were killed as well as the suicide

bomber. meanwhile in iraq the death toll continues to climb after one of the deadliest bombings to hit baghdad in more than a decade and the worst ever there at the hands of isis. at least 200 people were killed, another 176 wounded. the numbers rose yesterday as bodies were recovered from the rubble. authorities say a refrigerator truck filled with explosives blew up around midnight on saturday as people were celebrating ramadan. isis has claimed responsibility. they've also claimed responsibility for the attack in bangladesh on friday. gunmen stormed a restaurant in that country's capital city. the crisis that unfolded left 28 dead, including six attackers, and 20 hostages. at least one of those hostages was a u.s. citizen. three of those killed were college students in the u.s. and joining us from istanbul, turkey, nbc news chief foreign correspondent richard engel. and richard, all of this, obviously, as ramadan comes to a close. >> this is not really surprising, in fact. isis had called on its supporters to carry out attacks
2:32 am
during ramadan. and, that call was apparently listened to. you had the attack here in istanbul at the airport. you had orlando, where the caller said -- the shooter called in to say that he was doing it for isis. you had the horrific attack in paris. there was also an attack in yemen, bangladesh, about a dozen attacks in all. all high profile, all during ramadan. and i think it comes as isis is trying to project its power, it's losing territory at home, and it is trying to show its supporters that it has deployed its army, and it has deployed its army during the holy month when it is considered particularly blessed and fortuitous to engage in battle. and there's a long tradition in islamic history of doing -- waging war during ramadan. but, many people will say that isis is not an islamic organization at all, and that it proved that specifically by carrying out attack in medina, very close to the prophet's
2:33 am
mosque. in that saudi city. >> richard, when you talk about deploying that army, is there any indication which of these might have been directed by isis, and which just inspired? >> it's very hard to know. the further out you get from the center, and the center being iraq and syria, the harder it is for isis to actually deploy its people. there is some very strong indications that the istanbul attackers were actually deployed from raqqa, and this russian-speaking cell arrived in this city from raqqa just about one month before the attack, rented an apartment here, a neighborhood was even complaining that there was a chemical smell in the apartment. that they had reinforced the door, rarely opened the windows. so this attack, at least, seems to have been quite centrally planned. orlando, obviously, just inspired according to the subsequent investigation.
2:34 am
saudi arabia unclear. there are many saudi nationals inside isis though it is possible that one of their members went back to home to carry out this attack, but i think it's -- i haven't seen the results of the initial investigation. >> richard engel reporting for us. thank you so much. back here at home, donald trump's campaign spent the long weekend in a slow boiling controversy over the use of an image with seemingly bigoted origins. on saturday morning trump's twitter account displayed this image, a tweet calling hillary clinton the most corrupt candidate ever, with the words inside a six-pointed star. many pointing out it was a star of david shape placed on a bed of $100 bills. his campaign replaced that tweet with a circle just two hours later. on sunday, mic.com reported the image had appeared earlier on a message board used by white supremacists. trump still had no comment though his former campaign manager said it was too much political correctness. >> look, a tweet is a simple tweet. and the bottom line is you can read into things that aren't
2:35 am
there. it's the same star that sheriff's departments use all over the place to represent law enforcement. to read into something that isn't there is i think again that's the mainstream media trying to attack donald trump for something that really isn't there. again the bottom line this is political correctness run amok. if this would have been a star next to hillary clinton that didn't have the cash behind it no one would be questioning this. >> and we heard something similar from the donald trump tweeting dishonest media is trying their absolute best to depict a star in a tweet as the star of david, rather than a sheriff's star, or plain star. the clinton campaign called out trump for the use of a quote blatantly anti-accept tick image from racist websites adding that it is, quote, part of a pattern. while trump argued that it was a basic star often used by sheriffs who deal with criminals and criminal behavior, part of his allegation that clinton is corrupt. meanwhile trump social media director and one of his closest aides attempted to explain the tweet's origin. quote, the social media graphic used this weekend was not created by the campaign, nor was
2:36 am
it sourced from an anti-semitic site. it was lifted from an anti-hillary twitter user where countless images appear. the sheriff's badge, which is available under microsoft's shapes, fits with the theme of corrupt hillary, and that is why i selected it. as the social media director for the campaign i would never offend anyone and therefore chose to remove the image. presumptive democratic nominee hillary clinton was questioned by the fbi this holiday weekend. according to "the new york times," eight officials from the fbi and justice department took part in what was called a civil and business-like meeting by someone familiar with the session. according to "the new york times," eight officials from the fbi and justice department took part in this. a spokesman said clinton is pleased to have had the opportunity to assist the department of justice in bringing this review to a conclusion. that evening, clinton told nbc's chuck todd she has no knowledge of when the investigation will be over. saying she was given no time line. and she defended her husband's controversial private visit with attorney general loretta lynch.
2:37 am
>> it was a short, chance meeting that occurred, and they did not discuss the department of justice's review. and i know that some, nonetheless, have viewed the meeting in a different light. and both the attorney general, and my husband have said they would not do it again. hindsight is 20/20. both the attorney general and my husband have said that they wouldn't do it again, even though it was, from all accounts, that i have heard, and seen, an exchange of pleasantries. >> donald trump hammered clinton on twitter. quote, it was just announced by sources that no charges will be brought against crooked hillary clinton. like i said the system is totally rigged. later today, president obama will make his first campaign stop with hillary clinton. the place, battleground north carolina. charlotte, to be exact. the president will share their phone a friend story, how the two went from bitter rivals in
2:38 am
2008 to allies when she ended her bid and endorsed him, and colleagues when she joined his administration as secretary of state. the president was originally set to campaign with clinton in wisconsin, but the appearance was postponed after the orlando massacre, then rescheduled in north carolina. reportedly because of the campaign's growing confidence in the state. meanwhile, donald trump, who's campaigning in raleigh, has already pounced on news that clinton will fly to charlotte with president obama aboard air force one. trump tweeted, quote, why is president obama allowed to use air force one on the campaign trail with crooked hillary? she is flying with him tomorrow. who pays? clinton is already in washington, set to speak at the national education association later this morning. the latest national polling, meantime, shows a narrower margin for hillary clinton over donald trump. trump has cut her lead from double digits in the "usa today"/suffolk university poll to just five. while male voters split nearly evenly clinton cruises among women, winning by 12 points.
2:39 am
and while trump leads among white voters, clinton has a two to one edge among hispanics, a ten to one edge among african-americans. the poll reflects a growing sense of dread among the electorate. 61% say they're alarmed about this election. just 23% are excited. and listen to what newt gingrich had to say over the weekend. >> everything the clinton campaign is doing to suppress trump will, in the short run, suppress trump. because, he's not trying. she wants to spend $32 million in key states, she's going to look much better next week in the polls in those key states. it has no meaning. she's got to find a way to make him so utterly unacceptable, and she can do that with elites. but i'm not sure she can do it with normal people. trump's job is, frankly, to quit screwing up, get the election down to three or four big issues all of which come down to a single concept. enough. >> and gingrich faced questions over whether he would consider being vice president from the sitting vice president.
2:40 am
>> i'd like to ask one question before i begin. newt, you going to do it? >> i -- >> i think he needs the help, yes. >> the question was should i -- >> should he be vice president? i got to tell him -- anyway. it's a hell of a job. get a big pay raise. it's all worth it. >> donald trump spent the weekend meeting with conservative stars, many of them rumored to be in consideration for a possible spot as his running mate. trump spent independence day with freshman senator joni ernst of iowa. her camp said they had a good talk and the senator said, quote, i will continue to share my insights with donald about the need to strengthen our economy, keep our nation safe and ensure america is always a strong, stabilizing force around the globe. the day before, trump met with indiana governor mike pence and his family. tweeting, very impressed. great people. >> we just had a great visit. with the trumps. and it was a tremendous honor for our family to have the chance to spend some personal

time with them. they couldn't have been more kind and gracious and we'll always count it a privilege that we were able to spend some personal time getting to know someone who i believe must be the next president of the united states of america. >> if he offered you the position, would you take it? >> you know i -- i love my job and i love my country but i'm not going to get into hypotheticals. >> trump and another potential running mate, senator bob corker, campaigned in north carolina today. there is more political fallout from last month's brexit vote as one of the leading voices in that historic referendum is resigning as the head of his party. nigel farage, leader of the uk's independence party, announced the move yesterday. >> i came into politics from business, because i believed that this nation should be self-governing. i have never been, and i have never wanted to be, a career politician. my aim in being in politics was to get britain out of the european union. that is what we voted for in
2:42 am
that referendum. two weeks ago. and that is why i now feel that i've done my bit. that i couldn't possibly achieve more than -- that we managed to get in that referendum, and so i feel it's right that i should now stand aside as leader of ukip. >> farage is the latest high profile politician to step back in the wake of the brexit vote. david cameron, of course, announced he's resigning as prime minister after the result while former london mayor boris johnson says he won't run for that job. meanwhile the uk's labor party continues to put pressure on their leader, jeremy koshin', to resign. time now for business, u.s. markets set to reopen. cnbc's louisa bojesen joins us live from london. what can we expect this morning? >> yeah, hi, chris. just a note first on farage resigning. you had a lot of angry people yesterday saying basically all the people who were pushing so hard for the uk to exit the eu, they're not willing to take these leadership jobs or to stand up to the job of really
