up. >> reporter: before he would kill five officers micah johnson was described as a loaner. though his page reflected power in the black power movement it shows he had grown upset with the black lives matter group. >> no inspiration from any international terrorist organization. >> a military lawyer tells nbc news the army prematurely kicked johnson out of afghanistan after he was accused of sexual harassment. they say the victim requested johnson get mental help. they say johnson was not convicted of any criminal offense and received an honorable discharge in april of last year. his lawyer said it could have happened because his service contract expired. now investigators are piecing

across the city. president obama landed in spain last night. a small crowd of diplomats and government officials greeted him. the president is expected to hold a full slate of meetings before he heads back to the states. can you tell us what is next for the president today? >> good morning. it is a very tight agenda. it is a very tight day. the president will be leaving after spending eight or nine hours on the ground here. he is meeting with some u.s. embassy staff and he is going out to a u.s. naval station where a number of navy ships are. it's not the trip that he initially envisioned. it has taken him seven years to get here. it is the largest he has not yet visited.

there was a day of cultural activities. he will take part in a town hall, something t president often does and so on and so forth, a light time. clearly all of that has been overtaken by events back home. the events back home demanded the president's attention since the moment he arrived a couple of nights ago. the shootings, the ambush in dallas, the incidents that also happened in baton rouge, the president demanding, the president trying to respond to him and trying to calm the nation and trying to say to the nation we have to keep these things in perspective. it is what the president has been saying. here is some of what he had to say yesterday as to why he is going back home.

slaughtered. >> this is not just a black issue. it is not just a hispanic issue. this is an american issue. >> by thursday america was a nation on edge. it was a day and night of protests with an urgent message, black lives matter. in downtown dallas a crowd estimated at more than 800 people marched through the streete stree streets. there was passion but there was also peace. in a week the police and protesters seemed to be determined to get along. >> when the officers would ask that we stop for our own safety we did so. it was a peaceful rally and a peaceful protest. >> they chanted and marched peacefully, dallas police by their side.

just before 9:00 p.m. as the march was ending the crack of semi automatic fire. >> there were shots ringing out. we didn't know which way to hide and which way to go. >> we started to run and grab kids and helped mothers to goat safe. we didn't know which way to go. >> this father and son lost each other in the crowd. >> what was the most terrifying part about all of it? >> the most terrifying part was not knowing where the bullets were coming from and seeing an officer drop right in front of you. >> as the protesters ran away from the gunfire police ran towards it. it became clear the shooter had police officers in his sight. >> i saw cops bending over. it had to be like five or six cops. they were all getting shot down. >> how many shooters were there?

officers shot, three of them dead. the police chief said he believed there were two snipers. >> they are shooting. >> on twitter dallas police posted a photo of this man who was apparently carrying a long gun, possibly a rifle with the messa message, this is one of our suspects. please help us find him. the man later identified as mark hughes is seen waking up to an officer, giving him a riechlt it turned out he had a license to carry the weapon. after being questioned by police hughes was released. 11 officers had been shot and police announced the death of a fourth officer. >> subject is inside the el centro building.

tale of -- heroism of police officers and at the same time it has been a tale of cowardness by an asassin. >> there has been a despicable attack on law enforcement. >> many wond rg what actions will this country take to finally stop the violence. i want to now remember some of the too many lives lost this week. alton sterling was 37 years old when he was killed on tuesday. sterling had sold cd's in the convenience store packing lot and recently obtained a gun to protect himself from muggers. he was remembered as a joyful and generous man. his family and friends held a traditional second-line parade to celebrate and honor his life. >> philando castile was

remembered as a kind gented man who cared about the kids where he worked as a kitchen supervisor. phil was engaged to be married. his girlfriend and four-year-old daughter in the car when he was killed. brent thompson joined the rapid area transport. he had just married a fellow officer two weeks before he was killed. officer thompson trained police officers in iraq and afghanistan and had been an instructor before joining dart dart. the dart dart police chief remembered him as a great officer who served admirably. patrick zamaripa was married and had two children, a two-year-old daughter and stepson.

his family remembered him as a dedicated passionate police officer. patrick crowell worked for the wayne county police department before moving to dallas to join the force. michael smith served with the dallas police department for 28 years. he also served in the army for seven years. lauren aarons served since 2002 after spending ten years with the los angeles police department. he was remembered as a big man with a big heart by colleagues. >> the victims of this week's shootings will be remembered across the country today. in dallas organizers of thursday's protest will host a community conversation.

police smoke bombed protesters some of who were throwing rocks, bottles and fireworks. no word yet on the number of arrests. let's go now to dallas, the city in mourning. jacob is there for us. good morning to you, jacob. can you tell us, what is the latest? >> reporter: good morning. it has been incredible. we are standing in front of police headquarters. there is a large memorial. they parked a patrol vehicle of two.

friends, family, strangers have come by them hundreds upon hundreds of notes and flowers or balloons. some of the officer are standing guard and watching out have looked emotional. you can see the pain on their faces. one of them told me yesterday, you know, people don't just tell us they appreciate us a lot. it has been very inspiring and very touching to see all of this. of course yesterday we had an incident last night where it was very tense out here. we had reports of a suspicious person. suddenly it was all locked down. it spoke to how everybody is a little bit on edge while at the same time trying to show that kind of overwhelming support that we have seen for these officers and their families. and one more note i'll leave you with is that six of the officers who were injured or killed, so half of them were over at one other division where there are also a couple of other cars. the outpouring of support simply
