good morning. it's wednesday, july 13th, i'm jonathan capehart. president obama carried a difficult mantel yesterday, the nation's first black president addressed the high profile deaths of two black men by police, while eulogizing the five police officers slain on the streets of dallas. on the flight down he phoned the family members of philando castile and alton sterling to offer his condolences and once in dallas he tried to reassure the crowd that the nation is not as divided as things may seem. but he didn't shy away from discussing bias. that americans must confront certain truths in their homes and hearts. he drew a standing ovation as he invoked the heavy burden america's police officers carry as five chairs sat empty to represent the five fallen dallas officers. >> what chief brown has said is true. that so much of the tensions between police departments, and minority communities that they

serve is because we ask the police to do too much, and we ask too little of ourselves. these men, this department, this is the america i know. and today in this audience i see people who have protested on behalf of criminal justice reform grieving alongside police officers. i see people who mourn for the five officers we lost, but also weep for the families of alton sterling and philando castile. in this audience i see what's possible. i see what's possible when we recognize that we are one american family. all deserving of equal treatment. all deserving equal respect. all children of god. that's the america i know.

>> sharing the stage were the vice president and his wife dr. jill biden, as well as texas senators ted cruz and john cornyn. former president george w. bush brought an impassioned message of unity, as well. >> too often we judge other groups by their worst examples. while judging ourselves by our best intentions. and this is -- at our best we know we have one country. one future. one destiny. we do not want the unity of grief. nor do we want the unity of fear. we want the unity of hope. affection. and high purpose. >> president obama is set to host a town hall on race tomorrow. a number of memorials and funerals for the slain officers continue over the next days. authorities in baton rouge have arrested three suspects they say are connected to a plot

to kill police officers there. it began with a burglary at a pawn shop early saturday morning where officials say eight handguns and a bb gun were stolen. one 17-year-old suspect, who was apprehended on the scene, is alleged to have told police they stole the guns and were going to get bullets with the intention of shooting police. two of the handguns have yet to be recovered, and authorities say one suspect remains at large. officials say the threat, which they call credible, justifies the heavy police presence at protests this week in that city. last night in indiana, donald trump sought to bolster his position as the law and order candidate. >> the police are not just part of our society, our police are the best of our society. remember that. we have to remember that. they represent our highest ideals, our greatest values, and our most noble characteristics.

when our police are attacked, our entire nation is attacked. the hostility against our polite has to end. and it has to end right now. the two people that were killed in louisiana and minnesota, it was tough. it was tough to watch. for everybody here, it was tough to watch. we have to figure it out. we have to figure out what's going on. was it training? was it something else? it could have been something else. we have to take care of everybody. remember that. but we can never, ever forget the hundreds of thousands of great deals and great things that our police all over the country do, and nobody recognizes them for what they do. and when there's a problem, as bad as these two situations

were, and i personally think they were -- they were bad. i hated -- i hated watching it. but as bad as they were, they get broadcast all over the world for days and days and all of the good things, which are magnified thousands of times, nobody talks about. >> donald trump seems to be down to his final four choices for vice president, praising governors mike pence and chris christie, former speaker newt gingrich and senator jeff sessions of alabama. last night trump appeared with pence in the governor's home state of indiana. but in an interview with "the wall street journal" on the way to the event, trump said he wanted attack dog and that he had not seen enough to measure pence's fighting spirit. last night, pence came out swinging against hillary clinton, while trump continued to weigh his options. >> hillary and her party have been sliding so far to bernie's leftist agenda it's hard to keep track of it. the truth of the matter is, that

i just have to tell you from my heart after looking at the direction that their party has gone, farther and farther to the left, to paraphrase the director of the fbi, i think it would be extremely careless to elect hillary clinton as the next president of the united states. >> i often joke, you'll be calling up mike pence. i don't know whether he's going to be your governor, or your vice president, who the hell knows. >> while governor pence offered a vigorous defense of trump during the rally, earlier in the day he resisted questions about his disagreement with trump's proposal to ban muslims from entering the u.s. >> how do you share that ticket if you have a fundamental disagreement with him on the muslim ban? >> well, i -- look, i served in congress for 12 years. i've been a governor for 3 1/2 years. i haven't agreed with every one of my republican colleagues or democrat colleagues on every issue. but i'm supporting donald trump because we need change in this country.

>> governor chris christie appeared with trump earlier this week in virginia and his office tells politico he'll be traveling out of state today, and fox news announced it was suspending newt gingrich as attention builds around the possibility he'll be trump's pick. >> what could you add to a donald trump ticket as a vp? >> lots of gray hair. we'll see what happens over the next two or three days. it's a little bit like the apprentice. you find out sooner or later who the last one standing is. le. >> at long last, bernie sanders has endorsed hillary clinton. 37 days elapsed between the time clinton mathematically became the nominee and tuesday when sanders endorsed her. in new hampshire, the state that was home to his first primary win, sanders rap soddized at length about his vision and how he has shaped the party platform and hillary clinton's own campaign. >> together we have begun a

will eliminate tuition at those schools altogether. >> clip also let it be known that she, too, accepts donations of $27, a nod to the senator's refrain on the stump. not all were thrilled. some sanders supporters reportedly walked out of the event. donald trump tried to capitalize on their disaffection, where else, on twitter. quote, to all the bernie voters who want to stop bad trade deals and global special interests, we welcome you with open arms. people first. bernie sanders has abandoned his supporters by endorsing pro-war, pro-tpp, pro-wall street crooked hillary clinton. and, bernie sanders endorsing crooked hillary clinton is like occupy wall street endorsing goldman sachs. clinton gives a speech today in springfield, illinois, on race in america. and what happened in dallas. it will be on the site where lincoln delivered his speech that a house divided against itself cannot stand. congressional republicans

no consistency about him. he says whatever comes to his head at the moment. he really has an ego. how has he gotten away with not turning over his tax returns? the press seems to be very gentle with him on that. in response, trump tweeted around 1:00 a.m. this morning, justice ginsburg of the u.s. supreme court has embarrassed all by making very dumb political statements about me. her mind is shot. resign. i don't know where this could escalate from here, jonathan, but we will keep an eye on it. another story this morning, the fbi is ending a 45-year manhunt in the nation's only unsolved hijacking case. d.b. cooper, the man responsible for the 1971 hijacking of a boeing 727 plane is no longer being sought by the u.s. government. cooper extorted $200,000 in ransom and then parachuted from the plane vanishing over the pacific northwest. the fbi says it is no longer pursuing cooper, and is giving up hope of ever closing that file. pretty incredible there. now finally this morning, police chief david brown has impressed so many people with his candor in the aftermath of

the dallas shooting. here's how he began his remarks to the police during the memorial service yesterday. >> when i was a teenager, and start liking girls, i could never find the right words to express myself. so being a music fan of 1970s rhythm and blues love songs, i put together a strategy to recite the lyrics to get a date. so for girls i liked, i would pull out some al green, or some teddy pendergrass, or some isley brothers, but for people i love, if i fell in love with a girl, oh, i had to dig down deep, get some stevie wonder.
