ohio. we're just a short hop from the site of the gop convention which kicks off in two days. but you just watched one of the biggest events of this week. in new york, donald trump finally announcing indiana governor mike pence as his running mate. you're going to hear from both of them coming up. meanwhile the streets around the convention center they're pretty crowded with security. we'll get you a reality check on safety concerns in cleveland. it appears the anti-trump movement has had its last stand. there is one delegate that says there could still be a floor fight. we come to you live from what is the political capital of america for the next few days. in cleveland, ohio. we begin with our breaking news coverage of donald trump's formal introduction of his running mate, indiana governor mike pence. during their speeches, they each attacked the presumptive democratic nominee. in. >> what a difference. between crooked hillary clinton and mike pence.

mike pence will never be afraid to speak the name of our enemy. radical islam, radical islamic terrorism. hillary is a weak person. we are the law and order candidates, and we're the law and order party. we're going to change things around. there's going to be respect again for law and order. event ended, clinton in a tweet appeared to mock trump, and pence said we've got plenty to say. hillary clinton focuses on reasons why the indiana governor is wrong for the country. it includes katy tur in new york, hallie jackson and jacob rascon in cleveland. let's bring in katy tur. mr. trump introduced governor pence as his running mate. katy, what more can you tell us about the event. it seemed a lot like a rally. there were people cheering in the crowd. there was a lot of donald trump. >> hey there, alex. six rows of people were in front of the press, and watching donald trump make his announcement about mike pence. among those people, family, friends, new york gop party members, and tourists that just came in off the street. tourists that found out what was going on and asked if they could join. and were allowed in. unique experience for donald trump to announce his running

mate today. unique setting in many ways. the 30 minutes that he spoke before governor pence took the stage, donald trump spoke mostly about hillary clinton, and himself, attacking hillary clinton on her servers, on foreign policy. then relitigating the primaries, touting his successes during the primaries. and even talking about the deals he's made, saying that his hotel in washington, d.c., has come under budget. when he spoke about governor pence, he talked about how highly respected he was. he talked about his record in indiana. he talked about his ability to say radical islamic terror. he also talked about what happened during the primaries in indiana, during the race in indiana, when governor pence endorsed ted cruz. take a listen. >> governor pence under tremendous pressure from establishment people, endorsed somebody else, but it was more of an endorsement for me. if you remember, he talked about trump, then he talked about ted, who is a good guy, by the way,

who's going to be speaking at the convention, ted cruz, good guy. but he talked about trump, ted, then he went back to trump. it was the single greatest nonendorsement i've ever had in my life, okay? >> pence for his part was less of an attack dog against hillary clinton than he was during his audition in indiana. he talked about trump as a fighter, a good man, as a builder, as somebody who will set aside a legendary career in business to lead these united states. governor pence told the crowd that he was excited to join the ticket. and as for the setting of this, this is in new york city, it was in a hotel ball room. it's different from just in recent history when both john mccain announced -- excuse me, john mccain announced sarah palin in the swing state of ohio. and mitt romney announced paul ryan in the swinging state of virginia. new york is not a swing state. it's one donald trump says he

wants to win, but in reality it is not a swing state. it was almost hastily put together because this was pushed back a full 24 hours. donald trump delaying it because of the terror attacks in france. one interesting moment, governor pence said he found out he was going to be the running mate on wednesday. donald trump as late as thursday evening told fox news he was still undecided. it's unclear whether donald trump was trying to maintain some of the suspense surrounding the announcement, or if he was in fact still undecided after already telling governor pence that he was the choice. alex? >> well, and to the point of your interview yesterday with paul manafort, the head of the trump campaign, you couldn't get him to nail down when the decision was actually made. there's probably more to the story and we'll be discussing it in this hour. let's bring in hallie jackson nearby our position on east fourth street. hallie, as we look ahead to the convention beginning on monday

u, how do you think republicans who did not support trump, do you think this is going to be sufficient enough to change their minds? >> my conversations with some of these delegates who have not rallied around donald trump here in cleveland, there's a sense that as one person said to me, this is uncharacteristic for trump, a smart and thoughtful choice. obviously it's not enough to convince at least this person to get on the trump train, if you will. there is a sense pence could bring together factions of the party who want to see reainsurance from trump, that he's able to move forward and put together a campaign that could move the grass roots. certainly what the trump campaign is hoping for. and what trump himself wants to see. and he was very explicit about it in his speech in new york. listen. >> mike pence will never be afraid to speak the name of our enemy. so important. now, i think if you look at one

of the big reasons i chose mike, and one of the reasons is part of unity, i have to be honest. so many people have said party unity. because i'm an outsider. i want to be an outsider. i think it's one of the reasons i won in landslides. i won in landslides. this wasn't close. [ applause ] >> so that is trump acknowledging the party unity aspect, that pence could bring to the ticket. trump is an outsider. he's run as an outsider, he wants to be an outsider. the other half of the ticket now is now more of an inside man, who knows the ins and outsened knows the high-profile players. speaker paul ryan for example are praising pence as the pick. another couple notable moments from the speech. when you look at mike pence, he does talk often, and even before this, he talks a lot about his rural roots, growing up in smalltown indiana, went to

school in indiana. hoe's got very deep ties to the state. a different kind of contrast than what we see from trump. you've got pence, more mumble, coming across as more earnest, intentionally presenting himself that way, as opposed to trump who can be brash and bombastic, and likes to be that way. >> hallie, thank you very much for that. the polls indicate mike pence is a relative unknown to many americans. in the cbs "new york times" poll, 74% of registered voters said they haven't heard enough about him to have an opinion. and much the same in this week's mcclatchy maris poll. 68% don't have an opinion at all about him. former campaign manager for ben carson, and someone we always welcome to the broadcast. >> thank you for having me, alex. >> give me the decision from mike pence. more about donald trump, less about mike pence? how much do you think pence ultimately really matters to the

ticket? >> i think he checks a lot of boxes that trump could have used. social conservative. christian conservative. the party is starting right next door. >> i guess so, we're on lout speaker. >> he's in congress. chairman of the subcommittee on middle eastern foreign affairs committee, leader in congress, executin a big state now. it brings a lot of experience to the ticket that is quite helpful. wh do you believe that mike pence knew that he was the definitive choice for vice president. we've had all sorts of conflicting words about that, advisers, whispers. what do you think? >> as you know, mr. trump is not a big believer in leaks. >> didn't like them. >> unless he's doing it. >> right. >> but i believe wednesday night was probably the night that he told -- >> then why is it that both newt gingrich and chris christie as late as friday morning had not been told that they were not? >> as soon as you tell somebody

they're not, they'll probably go out and leak it. you have to sit on the information. >> you think that's really why they did it? even the friendship that donald trump has with chris christie? chris christie was really pushing for the job of the he was pushing for himself to do it. still making his appeals to the trump family and other insiders as late as friday morning. >> i totally agree. but i think that mr. trump, he was really enjoying all the speculation over this. >> so mike pence has expressed positions opposite to those held by donald trump. how much will that be the potential butting of loggerheads? do you think mike pence will just fall in line? or will he fall in line? is that what the party wants? >> for the vice president, always remember who the president is. mr. trump's position is what matters. but two people who think alike on every issue, one of them is not necessary. i'm glad that they have a difference of opinion, express his views, and the president will decide what the president decides. dick cheney was very different than george bush on a lot of

ibs. >> what about mike pence and difference of opinion, is that a direct appeal to the conservatives, the evangelicals in the party who held out their support of donald trump? >> if you look at the healing of the party, it's already occurred. 80% of the party has already healed. christian conservatives, mike pence is a -- somebody they really look up to. they really like. >> how about the way this whole thing rolled out, the way donald trump made his decision to pick mike pence as his vice president? how does that indicate to you the way he would be a decision-maker while sitting in the oval office? >> i mean, if it really happened last wednesday night, then this whole thing was a show. and he made his decision. i couldn't believe the reports about how he had waffled, facilitated on the decision. because i've never seen him do that on any other issue in his entire life. he's very comfortable in making decisions and living with them. so i could never wrap my mind around that. >> how about the two of them, though, the optics? look, theoretically, when you

rolled out the welcome mat for the republican convention. the city last hosted the republicans' big party in 1936. believe it or not, cleveland has never had the democratic convention, despite the city being a democratic stronghold. we'll have more on that in a moment. but first, the breaking news in the aftermath of the failed military coup in turkey. u.s. airline regulators are banning all flights to ankara and istanbul despite the efforts of the turkish authorities to resume business as usual. heavy gunfire and ex ploess were heard in both cities overnight and elsewhere, after a faction of the country's military attempted to topple the country's president. now, that effort was squashed by a group of forces loyal to the government. also thousands of supporters where you can see right here, taking to the streets in protest. sadly, though, more than 160 people died in the clashes. nearly 3,000 military personnel were detained. however, a much calmer scene across the country of turkey today.

earlier on, though, hundreds marched in support of president erdogan who vowed there would be a heavy price for the coup plotters. the u.s. flies air missions from southern turkey. there were concerns today about a power outage at the base. secretary of state john kerry in le luxembourg today. >> as of this moment, turkey's cooperation with us in our counterterrorism efforts, in our nato obligations, and in our regional efforts with respect to syria, and isis, have not been affected negatively. all of that has continued as before. >> nbc's jim miklaszewski is at the white house for us today. jim, welcome to you. does what you are hearing there, does that mirror secretary kerry's remarks? >> there is a sense of optimism out of officials at the pentagon, and in a statement

from the white house. that this coup was put down rather rapidly. and it had no immediate impact on the u.s. coalition, military efforts, launched from the air base there in turkey against isis forces in both syria and iraq. and there's some relief in both the pentagon and the white house that the coup was dispatched, defeated so quickly. but there's still got to be some concern. is this just a one off, or what is lying ahead? and i think it's indicative of in the fact that there is some concern, there could eventually be additional weakening of the erdogan government because the white house released a statement after a teleconference call with the president and his national security staff. and at the very end, there was this note. that the president also underscored the shared

challenges that will require continued turkish cooperation. so there's a sigh of relief, they're out of the woods for right now. but there's a longer term concern about the erdogan government and its viability in the future. because after all, nobody sees this air war, ground war by iraqi forces and rebel forces in syria ending anytime soon. and the fear is that as this war drags on, will erdogan be a reliable partner in the future. >> it's not the first time erdogan's government has had to deal with some sort of coup attempt. i believe it was the fifth one since his being in power, also as a prime minister. i want to ask you about the power outage there at the air base. any cause for concern there, mik? >> not at the moment. they look at that as temporary. and also, temporarily the turkish government, the turkish military has grounded all military aircraft from flying over turkey.

that means the u.s. and coalition aircraft, air forces operating out of the base will not conduct any operations in syria, or iraq. the military is scrambling other aircraft from other bases in the region to fill in that gap for the time being. they don't think it will last long. as a matter of fact, overnight, during the coup, the commander at the base at incirlik suspended all flights out of the base. it only lasted 25 minutes until that commander realized that incerlik, or the aircraft there presented no threat to the turkish government and country. so he immediately restored those flights, at least temporarily. again, u.s. officials are confident those flights out of incirlik will resume in the near future. >> jim miklaszewski, thank you very much. back to politics. now that the trump-pence ticket

is official, this was tweeted a short time ago from elizabeth warren. the direction the gop wants to take our country is more terrifying. pence is also on the offensive saying he accepted the invitation to be trump's running mate for two reasons. >> first, because i know from firsthand experience that strong republican leadership can bring about real change. just like we've seen in the hoosier state. and secondly, because hillary clinton must never become president of the united states of america. [ cheers and applause ] >> joining us with more, democratic reaction, connecticut governor dana malloy who joins us from the governors convention there. a fellow governor being selected, your thoughts? >> alex, this is a strange selection, quite frankly. this is a candidate for vice

president who is anti-woman, anti-freedom of religion, has gone after the gay, lesbian and transgender community very actively. i think this is a lot like doubling down on who can discriminate the most, and who can -- quite frankly, i think it's a real test which one of these folks has worst temperament to be president or vice president. this is a strange ticket. the rollout was a train wreck, let's be honest. we all know it. i think it speaks to the temperament to the top of the ticket that perhaps in a fit of anger, he got mad that somebody had leaked it and he was going to show somebody else. quite frankly, to begin your announcement of who your vice presidential candidate is about a lie when you made the decision isn't a great start. >> i want for transparency reasons for our viewers to know that you have a bit of history with mike pence, having traveled to the state of indiana. just talk about that so we have that perspective. >> well, a couple of things have happened over the last few

years. number one, he shepherded through a piece of legislation that would allow individuals and companies to discriminate against people when they exercised their constitutional right to be married. that's what he did. and quite frankly, i was not going to force a state employee to make a trip to indiana to be discriminated against. luckily, because we announced that we would not allow people to travel to indiana on the state's dollar, other states joined us, companies joined us. the largest employers in the state of indiana joined us. people canceled their plans to add jobs in indiana based on this level of discrimination. and ultimately, we were successful in getting pence to back down. the point was that he was willing to discriminate against people based on their sexual orientation, and based on their exercising their right to be married. it made no sense. it was an embarrassment to the people of indiana. it cost him dearly in his

personal popularity within the state. and we cannot tolerate that. you know, if you don't stand up to a bully, and that's what he is, then he's going to get away with it. and we have rights in this country. another right, and another disagreement i have with him is his willingness to discriminate against someone on the basis of their religion. it flies in the face of our founding. of course we have to stand up for freedom of religion. we don't make judgments about people because they're christian or jew or muslim. we should not at least make those kind of judgments. we should make them based on the quality of their character, and based on background checks if they come to our country. but to suspend muslims into our country makes no sense. quite frankly, what it does is hand terrorists a victory that they can't otherwise have. quite frankly, donald trump in essence presents terrorists with a victory. when he uses the kind of

language that speaks itself to discriminating against people based on their religion, flying in the face of our constitution. >> so governor, all of what you've said, notwithstanding, and the less than perfectly smooth rollout of the veep candidacy, you have to admit it is a tight race, even in the battleground states, where the clinton campaign is spending a lot of money. it's out of ohio. trump and clinton are in a dead heat. shouldn't she be polling better at this point? >> you know, i think there are different qualities of polls, and people push harder one way or the other. i think when you push people to make a decision, she's actually fairly well ahead in most of those states that you're talking about. i think she's going to win. but let's focus here. to win the presidency by 2% or more is a big victory. that's the reality. we have a society where people have picked sides. it's going to be close for a period of time.

but ultimately americans know the real thing. and donald trump does not have the temperament to be president of the united states. quite frankly, his candate for vice president doesn't have the temperament to be one heart beat away from that. do you really want donald trump making a national security decisions? do you really want him to represent america in europe and in asia? he doesn't. quite frankly, foreign leaders are shaking in their boots at the idea that they would have to deal with someone who is quite so erratic. >> all right. well, governor dan malloy, i'll let our viewers answer those questions in their own homes. a major development in the investigation into the nice truck attack. why has the killer's ex-wife been detained. that's next. i drive a golf ball.

a minute. first, big news from france about the terror attack today. the prosecutor in nice says five people are in custody. this in the bastille day attack in nice. the rampage leaving 84 people dead, including two americans. meanwhile, a third american, a student at uc berkeley is missing. let's go to chris jansing, she's in nice for us. what do we know about the people who have been detained? >> reporter: there are four men among them, alex. three were picked up just this morning. one last night. they're described as either friends or acquaintances of mohamed lahouaiej bouhlel. what their relationship might be, police simply aren't saying. but they've been brought in for questioning. are they being looked at as a possible accomplice or just someone who can help them answer the question that everyone here has, which is why. we are getting some clues from interviews that are being done by media. the french press agency

interviewed the attacker's sister, who said that he had had psychological problems since before he came to france. his father said he was on medication. and at one point had a nervous breakdown. in fact, there have been numerous reports that he beat his wife. and in fact, they were apart. they've gone through both apartments, where he lived with her, where he was living alone, and she was also detained. she is being questioned for what she might know about how all of this happened. in the meantime today, as you can see behind me, there has been a steady and huge stream of people coming to leave flowers and notes and candles at a memorial. i spoke to a university of georgia student, brendan phillips, who was here the night as it all unfolded. here's what he told me. >> i wanted to see the fireworks and be a little bit warm. >> when did you realize something was very wrong? >> we saw four police cars speed past us at high speeds in a

pedestrian area. we looked where they were going. and saw hundreds of people running towards us. so my friend started to film. and we realized two seconds later that that was a very bad idea. and we started running in the same direction. >> how long was it until you realized what had really happened? >> i did not know what happens happening when we were running. a policeman was just saying go quickly, and pointing away from where the incident happened. i had to text friends back home to tell me what was going on. >> you actually took cover in somebody's apartment, or house? >> yeah, we went to a friend's dorm and holed up there for three hours. >> do you think now, wow, it was so close? >> yeah. i've been to istanbul a couple of weeks ago, and flew into -- was going to fly into brussels. this was the closest i've come to a terrorist attack. >> reporter: i also spoke to a woman from california now living in paris, and she said she was in the city for the two attacks.

first at "charlie hebdo," and at the bataclan. she was going to come to the fireworks. and her sister, whom she was staying with, said to her, don't do it. we can see it from up on the hill. so she didn't come down. she felt very lucky. meantime, obviously funerals being planned for 84 people who were not lucky. there is that one missing student that you mentioned, alex. and op the trees and on posts around here in nice, th they posting signs for the people who are missing. there you see for nick leslie, the student at uc berkeley. according to the college, his family still has not heard from him, still wanting to know what happened to their son. >> it is heartbreaking and chilling at the same time. chris jansing, thank you very much from nice. republicans gathering, security expanding, anticipation building. the effort to prepare cleveland for the republican national convention. and a new block of voters showing their support for donald trump.

months, plus $500 bonus cash. ♪ welcome back, everyone. i'm alex witt at the erie island coffee cafe here in cleveland. security is a top priority. jacob rascon is in cleveland for us covering this angle. i understand some peaceful protests already taking place there where you are. >> reporter: a taste of what's to come, alex. you have a small group of protesters, you have a big police presence. you have officers on bike-riding paths, officers on foot. a police chopper overhead. behind me, among the group sponsoring this march and protest is the new black panther party. they call themselves at times freedom fighters. among other things, they say they're protesting police brutality, and donald trump. but they say among other things that they're sending a warning across america, one speaker said

our blood gets spilled, your blood gets spilled. the police are well aware of protesters like this. there are 122 permits that have been granted to groups to protest during the four days of the convention next week. and then, of course, around the city, it's all but locked down downtown. 8-feet-tall fences, barriers and such, all in preparation for monday. i spoke with a deputy police of chief about how recent attacks abroad and domestic have impacted their security plan. here's what he said. >> we do have extra measures in place to keep everybody safe. because that's a concern. we've got all these visitors coming in from all over the world, and we want them to know they're safe. seeing something like that happen is quite a challenge for us. >> reporter: he was talking about dallas. but he also spoke about the attack in france, and how the next day, the next morning they all sat down, looked at their plan, and made other

>> we've got bikers coming in from around the country. we could have anywhere from 1,000 to 10,000 bikers coming into town. we hope to be a calming factor. bikers are citizen crusaders from all walks of life. if they're not having a rally to support a veteran, to put a roof on his house, then they're organizing a toy run in august to make sure that children have gifts under the tree in december. it's a very patriotic group. our group is a veteran-based group. it's the backbone of the biker community. we're going to hopefully have a strong presence here. we feel like it's open season on law enforcement. there's an assault on decency, and we're here to stand with law enforcement in the event we're needed, we will step up. >> you have said that. in the event you're needed, you're right there. what do you mean by that? >> well, in the event that the police are being assaulted, they're being subjected to civil disobedience, our delegates don't feel safe and secure in their environments, we're going to do our best to make sure they

are safe. it's an open carry state, and we're sure there are going to be people on both sides walking around with guns on their side, and we're stressing to our members that this isn't a second amendment rally, a rally for the nra, although we do support those things, this is a rally to get collectively behind donald trump, for the men and women who have worked hard to get to this point. >> looking at what might come to this, the demonstrations that are expected, you've said that members of your group, perhaps even yourself included, are going to be walking around the city, almost vigilante-like. what do you mean by that? what authority have you been given, if at all, to do that? >> by no means are we going to take the law into our own hands. we are here to calm the situation. and we understand groups like the black panthers are openly advertising that they're coming in town, bringing firearms. we often see groups like black

really raise the tensions. one is, of course, al qaeda and isis. they would love to be into this convention cause a disruption. and the black lives matter. all the different protests that could happen from the police issue. the last is the plain old activists. take back wall street. all those types of protests that normally happen at places like the g8, but donald trump, of course, has been a very polarizing figure to many minority groups in the united states. and therefore, they have this as their platform. and as you know, the world will be watching. so anybody who wants to get their message out, unfortunately cleveland is going to be rt place. >> michael, what about ohio being an open carry state? i'm sitting here broadcasting here on the street. at any time anybody can legally walk down the street carrying a gun and it is of concern. it makes me uncomfortable, quite frankly.

>> obviously from the law enforcement perspective, the police chief said it would be nice if people left their weapons at home. there is from the nra side of things, they believe having weapons in open carry will actually take down the possibility of violence. because everybody knows there could be a response from civilians. that all makes for very, very different kind of mix for this very, very tense time in our nation's history. >> i also understand, michael, that cleveland is deploying a video unity to document crowd management, and police activity. can you talk about how these kinds of measures will really help security efforts? >> the same type of debate about body cams, and the cameras that are put on top of police cars. it's to provide a video counternarrative, if you will, from the video that you'd see from an individual -- from the perspective of someone who's been arrested. the police want to have their own version. their own perspective of what happens during these types of interactions. so they can be used later in
