(colonial penn jingle) it's wednesday, july 20th. right now on "first look," donald trump is officially the stand ardbearer for the republicans as the speakers built up their candidate and bashed hillary clinton and the democrats. >> our schools used to be an elevator to the middle class. now they're stalled on the ground floor. they're like soviet era department stores that are run for the benefit of the clerks and not the customers. breaking overnight, garry marshall one of hollywood's most beloved producers and directors has died at the age of 81. plus one of the media world's most powerful figures may soon be out of a job. president obama tells law enforcement he's got their backs. and late night has a field day with the donald. "first look" starts right now.

good morning, everyone. i'm dara brown. it is official donald trump is now the 2016 gop presidential nominee. and it was donald jr. who announced the delegates, putting his dad over the top. >> and it is my honor to be able to throw donald trump over the top in the delegate count tonight with 89 delegates! and another six for john kasich. congratulations, dad! we love you! >> donald trump addressed the convention again, this time via satellite, thanking supporters and vowing to win in november. his adult children also took to the stage to humanize their father, with donald trump jr. delivering what many have called the strongest speech of the night. >> if you do what you love, hold nothing back, and never let fear of failure get in the way, then you pretty much figured out the trump formula. >> i know when people tell him it can't be done, that guarantees that he gets it done.
2:02 am
i know that when someone tells him that something impossible, that's what triggers him into action. and this week, that same man will stand before you as our party's nominee for the president of the united states of america. >> and prominent republican officials also did their part in making a case for party unity ahead of the general election. >> we need to demand more than what hillary clinton offers for america. because see, we know exactly what four years of hillary clinton will bring, all the failures of the obama years. but with less charm, and more lies. it is time to come together and make sure that donald trump is the next president of the united states. >> with donald trump in the white house, senate republicans will build on the work we've done and pass more bills into law than any senate in years. >> what do you say that we unify this party? what do you say that we unify this party at this crucial moment when unity is everything?
2:03 am
>> it was a night of fiery speeches, as newspapers across the country took notice, and while the theme of the night was make america work again, speakers spent the night prosecuting hillary clinton's past controversies. in fact, just take a look at this word cloud with the night's most prominent themes. at some point the crowd even broke into chants saying lock her up while speakers attacked clinton. >> lock her up! lock her up! lock her up! lock her up! lock her up! >> if hillary clinton were elected she'd be the first president who couldn't pass a basic background check. >> friends, not since baghdad bob has there been a public figure with such a tortured relationship with the truth. >> as first lady you viciously attacked the character of women who were sexually abused at the hands of their husband!
2:04 am
>> hillary clinton understands coal miners, and blue collar workers, about as well as she understands secure e-mail. >> are we willing to elect someone as president who has as their role model somebody who acknowledges lucifer? think about that. >> it is our obligation to stop hillary clinton now, and never let her get within ten miles of the white house again. >> republican senator jeff flake reacting to that rhetoric late last night posting, quote, hillary clinton now belongs in prison? come on. we can make the case that she shouldn't be elected without jumping the shark. but it was a trump campaign's own controversy over wife melania's monday night speech that continued to hang over the convention, as news outlets report mrs. trump's speech was partly written by a trump organization confidant. here was msnbc contributor and "washington post" reporter robert costa last night.
2:05 am
>> what we've confirmed is that two bush speech writers, john mcconnell and matt scully were commissioned to contribute some kind of passage and theme to melania trump's speech. their draft was scrapped. she ended up working mostly with meredith macgyver a longtime trump organization employee, a loyalist to the trump family. >> a ballet person. >> someone who has done ballet. also a ghost writer for trump. someone who helps trump with public speeches and books. >> nbc's tracie potts joins us from cleveland. good morning, we're halfway through the gop convention. have they moved the ball at all in pushing their message of party unity and what can we expect today? >> well, dara, there were a couple of messages. they wanted to get across the message of party unity. not so clear how that's going. they did get this nomination done but not without some trouble over the last couple of days. the other message is portraying donald trump as not just a smart guy, a smart businessman, but someone who is more down to earth, who is compassionate, who can understand the middle class. he's not just a billionaire who
