tv Way Too Early MSNBC July 20, 2016 2:30am-3:01am PDT
2:30 am
michelle obama's speech eight years ago. and last night's convention theme was make america work again. but perhaps the most memorable phrase of the night was, quote, lock her up. it is 5:30 on the east coast, 2:30 out west. this is "way too early." in >> good morning, it's wednesday, july 20th, i'm chris jansing live from cleveland. and it was one for the history books here last night. donald trump, now officially the republican presidential nominee. the businessman and first-time candidate was nominated by his ally, senator jeff sessions, of alabama, and put over the top by his four eldest children, casting the votes of the new york delegation. >> it is my distinct honor and
2:31 am
great pleasure to nominate donald j. trump for the office of president of the united states of america! >> i have the incredible honor of not only being a part of the ride, that's been this election process, and to watch as a small fly on the wall, what my father has done in creating this movement, because it's not a campaign anymore, it's a movement. speaking to real americans, giving them a voice again, and it is my honor to be able to throw donald trump over the top in the delegate count tonight, with 89 delegates. and another 6 for john kasich. congratulations, dad! we love you! as the convention floor celebrated the fight over delegates was still not over as the delegation from alaska made a rare display of post-nomination disunity.
2:32 am
they contested all of their 28 votes being given to trump after he had clinched instead of being allocated based on the results of their election. >> mr. chairman -- >> the gentleman seek recognition? >> to contest the vote that alaska cast as it was recorded by the secretary. it was misrecorded by the secretary. we cast 12 votes for senator ted cruz, 11 votes for donald trump and 5 votes for marco rubio. that was pursuant to the alaska state of alaska rules for our party. 100% of our delegation agrees with that is the proper vote. we were never notified of anything different by the rnc. we were never consulted. our national people weren't consulted. our attorney wasn't consulted. we were never told that you were going to miscount our votes tonight. >> in the end, trump took the nomination with the backing of 1,725 delegates. nearly 500 more votes than
2:33 am
necessary majority. but with 721 delegates casting their ballots for other candidates, he had by far the most votes against his candidacy since gerald ford and ronald reagan fought from the convention floor in 1976. indiana governor mike pence was declared the vice presidential nomination by acclamation and with the ticket complete trump thanked the convention via satellite. >> a little over one year ago i announced my candidacy for president and with your vote today, this stage of the presidential process has come to a close. together we've achieved historic results, with the largest vote total in the history of the republican party. this is a movement. but we have to go all the way. >> the fallout over melania trump's speech continues as we husband's campaign continued to defend passages from the potential first lady's address, though many are lifted from
2:34 am
michelle's 2008 convention speech. a plagiarism website, turn it in, analyzed the speech and found that there's a one in a trillion chance that two writers would accidentally come up with the same word sequence. in response to the media storm, chairman paul manafort pointed directly to hillary clinton. even though her campaign hadn't even commented. and discovery actually surfaced from jared hill, a self-described tv journalist. >> there's a political tint to this whole issue and certainly we've noted that the clinton camp was the fir female the firt thing she does is try to destroy the person. >> as the day wore on trump surrogates defended the speech. sources close to the trump campaign tell nbc news that trump team hired matthew scully, a veteran speechwriter but the draft he submitted did not include the passages taken from suggests that melania trump, quote, decided to revise
2:35 am
the draft, and at one point she turned to a trusted hand, meredith macgyver, a new york city -- based ballet dancer and english major who has worked on some of donald trump's books including "think like a billionai billionaire." still trump's former campaign manager cory lewandowski suggested someone should be held accountable. >> i think melania trump is an extremely smart and articulate woman. the outline of that speech is her own. if a staff didn't vet the speech properly when the thoughts are put together, they should be held accountable. there's no question about that. >> meanwhile the republican national committee was sending mixed messages with chairman reince priebus suggesting it was unacceptable and communications director sean spicer downplaying the fuss. >> have you found that a speech writer had done that would you fire that speech writer? >> probably. >> melania trump said you work hard for what you want in life.
2:36 am
john legend said work hard -- >> wait on -- >> it's getting better. melania trump said the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them. twilight sparkle from my little pony said this is your dream -- >> so you're not taking this seriously. >> lock, a simple google search of three phrases comes up with everything from sparkle pony to john legend to akon to -- >> they're calling it the my little pony defense. in spite of the theme of the night being make america work again, many of the speakers sought to contrast donald trump and hillary clinton. for a second straight night delegates on the floor broke into chants of lock her up. this time, over and over during governor chris christie's address, which took on the tone of a mock trial, prosecuting the case against clinton. >> america and the world are measuredly less safe and less respected because of the iran deal that hillary helped cut. period. hillary clinton, as an inept
2:37 am
negotiator of the worst nuclear arms deal in american history, is she guilty or not guilty? as a flawed evaluator of dictators and failed strategist who has permitted russia back in as a major player in the middle east, is hillary clinton, guilty or not guilty? >> guilty! >> hillary clinton, as a coddler of the brutal castro brothers and betrayer of the family of fallen state trooper foster and his family. is she guilty or not guilty? >> guilty. >> and here at home for risking america's secrets to keep her own, and lying to cover it all up? >> guilty! >> still not all republicans want to lock her up. senator jeff flake, who sat out the convention, tweeted quote hillary clinton now belongs in prison? come on. we can make the case that she shouldn't be elected without jumping the shark. during his speech last night
2:38 am
former republican presidential hopeful ben carson went off script tying hillary clinton to a controversial community organizer. >> one of the things that i have learned about hillary clinton is that one of her heroes, her mentors, was saul alensky. and her senior thesis was about him. this was someone that she greatly admired. and that affected all of her philosophies subsequently. now, interestingly enough let me tell you something about saul alensky he wrote a book called rules for radicals. on the dedication page it acknowledges lucifer, the original radical who gained his own kingdom. so are we willing to elect someone as president who has as their role model somebody who
2:39 am
acknowledges lucifer? >> the comments were not part of his prepared remarks distributed to reporters. earlier yesterday and did not appear in the tell prompter. this is not the first time that he has used saul alinsky to tie clinton to lucifer. he made similar comments last month. it was a long road to winning over their support but last night the most powerful republicans in congress addressed the crowd in cleveland. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell entered the convention hall to a chorus of boos but he and other top leaders focused their attention more on hillary clinton and passing a true conservative agenda in congress. than on the nominee himself. for mcconnell "the washington post" tallied 24 mentions of the democratic nominee just five for trump during mcconnell's speech. during speaker ryan's speech paul ryan's 12 minute speech, only two mentions of trump. here are some of their best
2:40 am
attack lines from last night. >> hillary clinton is the definition of status quo. >> what does the democratic party establishment offer? they are offering a third obama term, brought to you by another clinton. >> when innovation advances technology, hillary clinton uses it to put american secrets at risk. >> she lied about her e-mails. she lied about her server. she lied about benghazi. she even lied about sniper fire. why, even she lied about why her parents named her hillary. hillary has changed her positions on so many times, it's impossible to tell where the conviction ends and the ambition begins. >> hillary clinton sought to snatch headline space away from the republicans while addressing one of the nation's largest labor unions yesterday. she waxed cinematic while talking about the first night of the convention.
2:41 am
>> last night in cleveland was surreal. i kept thinking, what's this like? and then i thought, you know, when i was a little girl, i went to see when they reissued it, the movie "the wizard of oz." and there were similarities that appeared to me. you know, lots of sound and fury, even a fog machine. but when you pulled back the curtain it was just donald trump with nothing to offer to the american people! >> still ahead, much more from the republican national convention here in cleveland. including jimmy fallon's epic impression. and later new developments on the russian doping scandal as far as the olympics are concerned. and later, he created the hit tv show "happy days" and directed the iconic film "pretty woman."

early skin aging and skin cancer with a clean feel. the best for your skin. ultra sheer®. neutrogena®. let's turn to business where markets are a bit of a mixed bag this morning as the dow jones extended its winning streak yesterday and global shares dipped overall. cnbc's steve sedgwick joins us live from london. good morning, steve. >> very good morning to you, chris. i can tell you actually the futures on the u.s. market look really positive at the moment because what happened was we had a lackluster session in asia, then we're having a really strong session for a lot of these european indices so that meant the s&p futures looking good. we also had some very, very good numbers out from sap, which is a german software company doing very well on cloud computing. that tallies into our next story because microsoft had numbers after the bell last night also looking at cloud computing and doing really well for them. they're still trailing the likes of amazon in this area but
2:46 am
having a strong performance at the cloud computing operation. and that's very interesting because that's offsetting revenue declines year on year. their mobile phone division was something that steve ballmer built up the business on and windows sales which are suffering year-on-year decline. for the cloud something like sap and for the u.s. companies like microsoft means that the market may continue to find new record levels again today. chris? >> steve sedgwick live from london thank you. in olympics headlines russia has avoided a complete ban of its athletes at the rio games at least for now. the international olympic committee said yesterday it will, quote, explore legal options following the release of a world anti-doping agency report outlining a russian state-backed doping program at the 2014 sochi games. while the ioc says it has begun disciplinary action against some implicated in the report russian sports minister, one official
2:47 am
facing a ban, yesterday denied claims of a state doping scheme. in golf for the first time in his career, tiger woods will miss four consecutive majors. the former world number one is done for the season. announcing yesterday he's withdrawn from the pga championship, and will, instead, focus on rehab after two back surgeries last fall. woods' ailing back has kept him out of competitive play since he tied for tenth at the wyndham championship last august. turning to major league baseball where in pittsburgh a scary moment in the second inning between the brewers and the pirates where milwaukee pitcher jamison takes a comebacker off his head. he is shaken up but believe it or not he's able to remain in the game. as for which the brewers tie things up in the top of the ninth inning, but the pirates have an answer in the bottom of the frame. >> it's deep. and this one is off the wall! running hard all the way.
2:48 am
he's trying for three. and he is in! he's done it again! >> josh harrison hits a triple then heads ohm on a brewers throwing err are for the walkoff little league home run. and in oakland the astros gonzalez hits a foul ball into the left field stands during the third inning at hits an unsuspected ball park vendor right on the rear end. as for the game, the athletics beat the astros 4-3. ouch. let's get a check on your weather with nbc meteorologist -- >> -- slow motion. >> don't turn your back. >> you want to get hit somewhere that's where you want to get hit, i'll tell you that much. >> that's true. >> chris the heat's going to follow everyone from the middle of the country to the east. not many people that are going to avoid it. by the numbers right now, this is pretty incredible. it covers over a half a million square miles. all the way from louisiana, northwards up to minneapolis. 46 million people included.

16 states. it's been hot. it gets worse over the next couple days. then we're going to take this mess and ship it to the east coast for the upcoming weekend. so it will feel like, remember, this is in the shade, too, 110 omaha. st. louis 110 the next three days. then we bring it towards cincinnati. even cleveland on friday will feel like 100 degrees. chicago 102. atlanta into raleigh, all the way through charlotte. everyone's going to get a little piece of this. our nation's capital, 105 saturday and sunday. and even the big cities of new england, which aren't used to heat like this will easily be in the mid 90s, close to 100. in philadelphia, new york and boston, right through the upcoming weekend. so not many places are going to avoid it. if you're lucky you'll get some afternoon showers and storms to cool you off in areas of florida today. possibly st. louis, too. but it will be welcomed relief from the brutal heat right now. and even it's not like it's chilly in the west either, salt lake city at 100. tomorrow not a lot changes across the map. just continues to be very hot, chris and even cleveland could feel like 100 on friday. so that's something for the city there, too.
2:50 am
>> well, everybody knows cleveland's the hottest city mother nature's just catching up. >> that's right. >> right? >> thank you, bill karins. still ahead, a "saturday night live" star fights back and scores a win against internet trolls. louis burgdorf joining us here in cleveland when we come right back. using 60,000 points from my chase ink card i bought all the fruit... veggies... and herbs needed to create a pop-up pick-your-own juice bar in the middle of the city, so now everyone knows... we have some of the freshest juice in town. see what the power of points can do for your business. learn more at chase.com/ink

burgdorf. >> miss jansing it's so good to be in your hometown. i love the people of cleveland. everybody having a good time here? excellent. all right. you got to start off this block here with some sad news, though, legendary hollywood producer and director garry marshall has passed away. the 81-year-old was the creator of hit shows like "happy days" and "the odd couple." he also directed the blockbuster film "pretty woman." ron howard who played ritchie cunningham on "happy days" tweeted garry's mantra to those who succeeded in entertainment was simple, life is more important than show business. he was also a guest on "morning joe" a few years back and discussed some of the themes that ran through this shows. >> so many shows underneath are based on friendship or family dynamic, and i always it, which sometimes it's fantasy, that everybody gets along, and that friends after some conflict make up. but that's what we did on
2:54 am
"laverne & shirley" with friendship, fonzi and ritchie was friendship. the odd couple was friendship. i get people who are a little lonely. so friend. ship is a good theme. >> he will be missed. the new ghostbusters reboot has faced some backlash, but "snl" stars leslie jones the movie's only african-american ghostbuster has faced the brunt of the online criticism. late monday she called out her trolls retweeting some of the vitriol she's received. saying i didn't do anything to deserve this, so, so hurt right now. and before taking a break from twitter jones called out the site for its bullying policy posting quote twitter i understand you got free speech i get it but there has to be some guidelines. you can see on the profiles that some of these people are crazy sick. it's not enough to freeze an account. now, twitter facing some recent criticism about how it monitors trolling on the site released a statement and permanently
2:55 am
suspended a breitbart editor after he referred to jones as quote a black dude and barely literate. multiple celebrities went to jones's defense, including ghostbusters director who tweeted leslie jones is one of the greatest people i know any personal attacks against her are attacks against us all. al attacks against us all. all right now let's get to the convention we are here in cleveland. now donald trump secured the republican party's nomination but before announcing their votes delegates shared just some of the things that makes their state stand out. >> the great state of alabama, the home of national champion football teams, alabama, and auburn. >> missouri, the birthplace of talk radio. >> i'm from the state of idaho, where we have famous potatoes. >> on behalf of the great state of minnesota, home of 10,000 lakes, home of spam. >> the sunshine state. home to disney world.
2:56 am
we are the state that gave lebron james his first two championships. >> best part of the convention so far by far. now finally this morning both television and online media had a field day after the kickoff of the rnc here. jimmy fallen certainly did not miss an opportunity to spoof some of trump's dramatic walkout with a dance to michael jackson there. and then, when that was done, he dressed the elephant in the room what happened in melania's speech on monday night. >> anyway, it's been a great convention so far. last night was fantastic. it was huge. did you see melania? she stole the show. literally. i mean, she delivered her speech like a true first lady. that first lady being michelle obama. but still. she might have plagiarized some of it. but you got to admit she did it harder, better, faster, stronger, and you can quote me on that.
2:57 am
>> his trump's gotten really good. >> i'm not -- we don't have monitors -- >> you couldn't see it? >> so i thought that was donald trump, actually. louis burgdorf thank you. that's going to do it for me and louis and "way too early." coming up on "morning joe," governor chris christie will join us for an interview after his indictment of hillary clinton last night. and joining the conversation the anchors of "snl's" weekend update, and that and much more coming up next on "morning joe." we are live from cleveland! she spent summer binge-watching.
