they contested all of their 28 votes being given to trump after he had clinched instead of being allocated based on the results of their election. >> mr. chairman -- >> the gentleman seek recognition? >> to contest the vote that alaska cast as it was recorded by the secretary. it was misrecorded by the secretary. we cast 12 votes for senator ted cruz, 11 votes for donald trump and 5 votes for marco rubio. that was pursuant to the alaska state of alaska rules for our party. 100% of our delegation agrees with that is the proper vote. we were never notified of anything different by the rnc. we were never consulted. our national people weren't consulted. our attorney wasn't consulted. we were never told that you were going to miscount our votes tonight. >> in the end, trump took the nomination with the backing of 1,725 delegates. nearly 500 more votes than

necessary majority. but with 721 delegates casting their ballots for other candidates, he had by far the most votes against his candidacy since gerald ford and ronald reagan fought from the convention floor in 1976. indiana governor mike pence was declared the vice presidential nomination by acclamation and with the ticket complete trump thanked the convention via satellite. >> a little over one year ago i announced my candidacy for president and with your vote today, this stage of the presidential process has come to a close. together we've achieved historic results, with the largest vote total in the history of the republican party. this is a movement. but we have to go all the way. >> the fallout over melania trump's speech continues as we husband's campaign continued to defend passages from the potential first lady's address, though many are lifted from

michelle's 2008 convention speech. a plagiarism website, turn it in, analyzed the speech and found that there's a one in a trillion chance that two writers would accidentally come up with the same word sequence. in response to the media storm, chairman paul manafort pointed directly to hillary clinton. even though her campaign hadn't even commented. and discovery actually surfaced from jared hill, a self-described tv journalist. >> there's a political tint to this whole issue and certainly we've noted that the clinton camp was the fir female the firt thing she does is try to destroy the person. >> as the day wore on trump surrogates defended the speech. sources close to the trump campaign tell nbc news that trump team hired matthew scully, a veteran speechwriter but the draft he submitted did not include the passages taken from suggests that melania trump, quote, decided to revise

the draft, and at one point she turned to a trusted hand, meredith macgyver, a new york city -- based ballet dancer and english major who has worked on some of donald trump's books including "think like a billionai billionaire." still trump's former campaign manager cory lewandowski suggested someone should be held accountable. >> i think melania trump is an extremely smart and articulate woman. the outline of that speech is her own. if a staff didn't vet the speech properly when the thoughts are put together, they should be held accountable. there's no question about that. >> meanwhile the republican national committee was sending mixed messages with chairman reince priebus suggesting it was unacceptable and communications director sean spicer downplaying the fuss. >> have you found that a speech writer had done that would you fire that speech writer? >> probably. >> melania trump said you work hard for what you want in life.

former republican presidential hopeful ben carson went off script tying hillary clinton to a controversial community organizer. >> one of the things that i have learned about hillary clinton is that one of her heroes, her mentors, was saul alensky. and her senior thesis was about him. this was someone that she greatly admired. and that affected all of her philosophies subsequently. now, interestingly enough let me tell you something about saul alensky he wrote a book called rules for radicals. on the dedication page it acknowledges lucifer, the original radical who gained his own kingdom. so are we willing to elect someone as president who has as their role model somebody who

acknowledges lucifer? >> the comments were not part of his prepared remarks distributed to reporters. earlier yesterday and did not appear in the tell prompter. this is not the first time that he has used saul alinsky to tie clinton to lucifer. he made similar comments last month. it was a long road to winning over their support but last night the most powerful republicans in congress addressed the crowd in cleveland. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell entered the convention hall to a chorus of boos but he and other top leaders focused their attention more on hillary clinton and passing a true conservative agenda in congress. than on the nominee himself. for mcconnell "the washington post" tallied 24 mentions of the democratic nominee just five for trump during mcconnell's speech. during speaker ryan's speech paul ryan's 12 minute speech, only two mentions of trump. here are some of their best

16 states. it's been hot. it gets worse over the next couple days. then we're going to take this mess and ship it to the east coast for the upcoming weekend. so it will feel like, remember, this is in the shade, too, 110 omaha. st. louis 110 the next three days. then we bring it towards cincinnati. even cleveland on friday will feel like 100 degrees. chicago 102. atlanta into raleigh, all the way through charlotte. everyone's going to get a little piece of this. our nation's capital, 105 saturday and sunday. and even the big cities of new england, which aren't used to heat like this will easily be in the mid 90s, close to 100. in philadelphia, new york and boston, right through the upcoming weekend. so not many places are going to avoid it. if you're lucky you'll get some afternoon showers and storms to cool you off in areas of florida today. possibly st. louis, too. but it will be welcomed relief from the brutal heat right now. and even it's not like it's chilly in the west either, salt lake city at 100. tomorrow not a lot changes across the map. just continues to be very hot, chris and even cleveland could feel like 100 on friday. so that's something for the city there, too.
