a primetime focussed on showcasing mike pence to the american people goes off the rails. former presidential candidate ted cruz took the stage at donald trump's convention and purposefully did not endorse his party's nominee. near the end of the speech, convention goers broke out into fits of boos as trump crashed the speech. >> if you love our country and love your children as much as i know that you do, stand and speak and vote your conscious, vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the constitution. i appreciate the enthusiasm of the new york delegation, we must make the most of our moment to fight for freedom, to protect our god-given rights, even if

melania's speech got more publicity than any of the history. that was contradicted by meredith mciver when she took full responsibility. mciver ghost writer for trump said, quote, in working with melania trump on her recent first lady first, we discussed many people who inspired her and messages she wanted to share with the american people. a person she has always liked is michelle obama. over the phone she read me some passages from mrs. obama's speech as examples. i wrote them down and later included some of the phrases that ultimately became the final speech. i did not check mrs. obama's speeches. this was my mistake and i feel terrible for the chaos i caused melania and the trumps as well as mrs. obama, no harm was meant. it is clear that trump team now hopes this controversy is behind them as the donald is set to close out the convention tonight with his own keynote address.

nbc's tracy potts joins us now from cleveland. tracy, after three nights of controversy, does the success rest on trump's shoulders tonight and what else can we expect from the convention's final days? >> well, it really does. if trump can knock it out of the park tonight, it will to some degree diminish these unexpected issues and controversies that we've seen everyday of this convention. clearly tonight is his night to pull things together. unity is the theme of the day. make america one again. there are ten speakers set for tonight. we're going to hear from the reverend jerry fallwell trying to again give a prime spot to evangelicals, those ultra conservatives that they're trying to pull into the trump campaign. we're going to hear from reince priebus, the head of the republican national committee again about unity, about bringing together these dissident factions of the party.
