2:31 am
good morning, it's friday, july 22nd i'm chris jansing live from philadelphia, where the democratic national convention is up next. but last night, donald trump accepted the republican nomination for president with a speech on lawlessness, terror, and economic decline. speaking for an hour and 15 minutes, trump delivered the longest convention speech of a presidential nominee since at least 1972. the billionaire promised to champion america, with a heavy emphasis on containing crime and curbing foreign threats. and he pledged to reposition america's standing in the world, fighting for what he dubbed the forgotten men and women of our country. >> americans watching this address tonight have seen the recent images of violence in our streets, and the chaos in our communities. many have witnessed this

violence personally. some have even been its victims. i have a message for all of you, that crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon, and i mean very soon, come to an end. beginning on january 20th, of 2017, safety will be restored. americanism not globalism will be our credo, as long -- as we are led by politicians who will not put america first, then we can be assured that other nations will not treat america with respect, the respect that we deserve. every day i wake up determined

has been compromised by terrorism until such time as proven vetting mechanisms have been put in place. we don't want them in our country! >> last night's republican convention also made history when peter field, co-founder of paypal and silicon valley billionaire became the first person to publicly announce to the gop convention that he is gay. >> we are told that the great debate is about who gets to use which bathroom. this is a distraction from our real problems. who cares? of course, every american has a unique identity. i am proud to be gay. i am proud to be a republican. but most of all, i am proud to be an american! >> i will do everything in my power to protect our lgbtq

>> i'm not going to get in to criticizing or attacking donald trump. i am not in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father. and that pledge was not a blanket commitment that if you go and slander and attack heidi, that i'm going to nonetheless come like a servile puppy dog and say thank you very much for maligning my wife and maligning my father. >> some in your own party are blaming you and that speech last night for sowing more division within the gop. is it your fault? with that speech? >> discussing what we should stand for. we should be standing for freedom and defending the constitution, is a message of unity. and as i said last night very explicitly, the way to unify the party is not to scream and yell and hurl insults. the way to unify the party is to
