>> i think we should begin day one, msnbc. >> oh, yeah. where else? >> it was bare bones, nerve wracking. >> i can't believe it's been 20 years. msnbc was such a cutting edge place whether he it went on the air. >> favorite msnbc memory? >> she does not have a short memory. i have a short memory. >> thank you so much, reverend. >> thank you. bill maher plays hardball. good evening. i'm chris matthews. the republican convention is just days away and the parties' nominee is running the most unpredictable some would say confounding campaign in recent times. only 30% of the american voters consider her trustworthy. on top of that the country seems polarized on race and policing.
4:01 am
whose vision will prevail this november? with me for the full hour, comedian bill maher. he's the host on friday night. and hosts the episodes all live during the episodes of the democratic convention. bill, thank you. >> great to be here. >> there's nothing like being here because i can ask you the toughist question. >> please do. >> if you had somebody living overseas, how would you explain the racial issues in this country? >> some don't have this problem because they don't have history of slavery like we do. we never got race right in this country. it's the original sin in this country, the fault line we've tried to cover up. i just watched that recent documentary on o.j. simpson and it's hard to believe that back then every white person in

america was like, of course, he's guilty, and no jury could ever find him anything but guilty and they were shocked when they didn't. >> i was too. >> we were all shocked. i was too. black folks were all applauding. not because he was that that innocent but for once the black guy beat the system after the system beat black folks. 's the beginning of it. when it comes to the police, look, there's a never-ending excuse for what happened. for shooting a policeman, of course, we all cob dem that. there's no ifs, ands, or buts. i don't condone it, but i do understand it. >> you understand that guy. >> i understand the motivation, yes. how many videos can you see, how many years can go on when black people are brutally assaulted? the last one t guy was right on the ground and he put a slug in

4:04 am
a while. it was not dangerous work. we guarded the capitol building. one thing we learned is when you would stop a car, you never stand at the driver's seat. you always approach from the back door going in sideways. so policemen are basically worried when they stop anybody about who's in the car. that may explain some of it. >> it is a dangerous job. by the way, there are statistics how dangerous it. i don't think it is in the top ten. i think more cab drivers and fishermen are killed. it's not to say it's not a dangerous job. the frankness of when you feel near vus about your life, you can't just shoot. most cops, probably not.

but way too many, it gets on film a lot. >> that's what i want to ask about. when you see the guys running across the field 100 yards away and plugs him from behind, that's not self-defense or nervousness it's coward is. >> a >> are we missing anything? >> once you have him on the ground and you're wailing on him with batons, that cannot be justified. >> the choke hold guy with the loose cigarettes. >> this is a job you volunteered for. it says protect and serve on the side of the car. that's to protect us, not you. you have to understand, yeah, there's an element of danger in this job and you have to do that. by the way, i think most policemen like their job. yes, there's danger in it, but
4:06 am
there's also a lot of perks. >> donald trump tweeted, look what's happening in this country under the weak leadership of president obama and crooked hillary clinton. do you think the united states at times have an influence on these various situations? do you think the presidential leadership does anything to forestall this? >> i don't think the president can forestaal them but he's good about talking about them. there are lots of black folks on one side who say he doesn't do it enough. people like cornell west and eric dyson. >> i know. i hear from both of them. >> we know what the right wing thinks of him, perhaps he's an illegitimate president. >> i know why he's doing it. to be seen as someone who's an

4:08 am
100% we will cease to have a country. i am the law and order candidate. >> that's what nixon said in '68. >> i know. why do you think he's taking sides? >> actually crime has been down the last 20 years. that's not what it looks like in new york city. but when it leads, it leads. >> the crime is down. >> things are actually probably better and statistically they're shown to be be better but that's not how you lead folks. >> if you have kids living in upstate new york, you feel better. >> of course, i lived through

the '70s. mayor rudy giuliani says they're racist. they need to protect the american race. >> he really said that? >> yeah. >> republicans wonder why they don't get the votes of minorities when they say things like that. black lives matter is not racist. when we see them gunned down in the street, when they're not deserving on that, wasn't there some movement? >> to beg your point, newt gingrich who's on his best behavior said it's more dangerous to be black on the street not just because of police but crime on the street. both. what do you think he's up to? >> he's up to wanting to be vice president, but i don't think that's goej to happen.
