democrats kicking off their 2016 convention. republicans spent a week chanting lock her up and painting a dark ugly picture of america. the tone in philly will be different. it's a chance to reintroduce hillary clinton and her running mate tim kaine. to introduce him to a national audience. democrats will respond to a week of gop attacks with clinton and kaine already going after donald trump. >> when he says, as he did say, i alone can fix it, he's not ly wrong, he's dangerously wrong. >> when donald trump says he has your back, you better watch out.

5:03 am
heavyweights. let's start with casey hunt who has been with the clinton kaine event and is now inside the convention hall in philly. let me ask you this, is the clinton camp happy with the vp roll out so far? >> absolutely. they're thrilled with their roll out. there was a significant contrast they showed with the way donald trump picked and rolled out his running mate compared to how they did it. they wanted a button down process. they wanted to be methodical and cautious about it and that's what happened and at the event yesterday tim kaine showed he could be something other than boring. or a lot of people, even people that covered kaine for quite awhile in the room yesterday thought he put in a pretty good
5:04 am
performance. he talked about his own personal story and wove it together with attacks on donald trump. he and clinton seem to have good chemistry on stage. they did focus and you referred to this in tha introduction, they focused on kaine's record on guns and how he worked in the wake of the virginia tech shooting to try to implemented back groubd checks for example and kaine spoke about that. that's part of the push to make sure that they don't face too many questions about whether or not kaine is progressive enough for the base of this party. they do have issues in other areas. both upset some sanders reporters. >> we'll talk later in the show about him being in virginia and his standing on guns. kind of interesting.
5:05 am
thanks a lot. now let's go to kelly covering the trump campaign from philly. kelly, let me guess, trump's not going to lay low this week and let clinton get all the spotlight, will he? >> your instincts are right about that. this will not be the kind of go quitely into the night for a week and allow the ticket to have the spotlight after donald trump had his big show in cleveland. not going to do that. expect that donald trump and mike pence will be on the road. they will hit some of the big battleground states that will be so much of the turf war this contest will ultimately be decided so virginia, north carolina, florida, what we'll see is this will be a first real chance for rally sized crowds and voters beyond the delegates to get a look at this new partnership of trump and pence. so far we have seen mike pence, the indiana governor playing a
5:06 am
real second place role. now that's always part of the ticket but what we saw with hillary clinton and tim kaine was a lot more time for tim kaine. a lot more of them sharing the stage together. we have not had that yet with trump and pence so this will be a chance for them to go on the road. to bring some traditional cal pain skills to try to hit the battleground states which will be so pivotal and it will be a time when they will try to compete for attention with a democratic national convention that is more organized and planned than in cleveland. even though trump felt he had a big night. don't expect him to go quitely while hillary clinton gets her

to you because they have personal stories and you have worked together. you are a trade issue and you have ties to wall street with kaine. will progressives rally around and turn out for tim kaine on the ticket? >> they will and at the end of the day people rally and turn out for the top of the ticket and not the vp but where progressives should celebrate and often times we don't recognize our victories but all of the input that they participated in in terms of the platform, clearly the stance on those issues there were many, many victories and i think that you will see that both hillary clinton as well as tim kaine are going to abide by that. >> you know, governor, the fact
5:11 am
is the national polls show hillary clinton ahead of trump and that's not counting the bump he may have gotten from the republican convention. so how big of a bump does clinton need to come out of this convention in philadelphia this week? >> it doesn't mean anything in november. the convention in atlanta with the great speech and came out to the neal diamond song coming to america and we left 17 points up and we got beat by 10 points so bumps are important and i think we'll get a good bump because we have a great array of speakers and when they realize what

way to view it differently. one of the things we have to do is point out factually where donald trump is wrong and where he says he's going to defeat isis, didn't give one example of how. he says he's going to get rid of street crime but didn't tell the public that, in fact, it's h mayors and governors and local police can battle local street crime and not the government. his only answers are trust me and that's not good enough and you'll see hillary clinton in this convention put down answers to the problems that we face. >> congresswoman, a quick answer, isn't part of the challenge going to be turning out particularly with new voting laws in some states that we have never seen in a presidential election? >> absolutely but we're organizers and we will use those laws to help bring people together to show them the significance and importance of
