www.vitac.com the democrats convention begins. and it is off to a bumpy start. not just because their chair has announced plans to resign due to the content of thousands of leaked dnc e-mails, but also because hillary's pick for running mate of tim kaine has not exactly inspired people. >> he's a, a white guy, who's a little boring. >> he seems kind of dull. >> he's somebody that has sort of had just the moniker of boring. >> he is a mayonnaise sandwich on whole wheat bread. >> okay we get it. tim kaine is boring. he's a white gym sock pulled all the way up. he's a granny smith apple for dessert. but look, while there has been

minimal excitement from democrats regarding the kaine pick, try and think about it like this. for months the party has been looking at the vp slot as a gift that hillary was going to give them. everyone was so excited to open it. was it a puppy, a playstation? elizabeth warren? no, it turned out to be a rice cooker. >> the democratic national convention opens later today but the drama has already gun as the party chair resigns amid an e-mail scandal. was bernie sanders right about the system being rigged against him? meanwhile, sanders supporters are still feeling the bern, literally, protesting in philly in 90 degree heat. but how hot will it get inside once the party starts? and the democratic ticket hillary clinton's first joint interview with her new running mate tim kaine and the answer to one question that was not quite expected. it's 5:00 a.m. here on the east coast, 2:00 a.m. out west, this is "way too early."

hey there, good morning, everyone. it is monday july 25th. i'm alex witt. we're going to get to the dnc in just a moment. first we have this breaking news to share from florida overnight. at least two people have been killed and at least 14 others have been injured. this in a shooting at a nightclub. the incident occurred at the club blue in fort myers where police were called to the club shortly after midnight. fort myers police say the scene is still very active at this time and trying to determine exactly what has occurred. police have also noted that there may be two other crime scenes in connection with this incident. they're currently investigating that. once again two people killed, as many as 14 to 16 injured in this night club shooting in fort meyers. we're going to get you more on the story as we get it here at msnbc this morning. meanwhile the democratic national convention opened up

today after a rather under the cloud of skonl as debbie wasserman schultz, the party's chair, will step down after thousands of internal e-mails were posted online by wikileaks. the e-mails contribute to the narrative that the national party had its thumb on the scale for hillary clinton's campaign over that of senator bernie sanders. in a statement wasserman schultz did not acknowledge the unfolding story and she added going forward the best way for me to accomplish those goals is to step down as party chair at the end of this convention. before exiting she plans to open and close the convention, and also address the delegates. and was seen walking around on the floor of the hall yesterday. statements from the clinton campaign and president obama came out within minutes of each other applauding her work. clinton also announced that wasserman schultz would become the honorary chair of her 50-state program and that they would campaign together as she seeks re-election for her congressional seat in florida. the sanders campaign thanked her

for her years of service but also added, quote, the peat leadership must also always remain impartial in the presidential nominating process, something which did not occur in the 2016 race. and the senator had this to say earlier in the day. >> well, no, nobody has apologized to me. this really does not come as a shock to me or my supporters. there is no question but the dnc was on secretary clinton's side from day one. we all know that. and i think, as i have said a long time ago, that the time is now for debbie wasserman schultz to step aside not only for these issues. we need a democratic party that is open, that's going to bring young people and working people into it. that is going to stand up and take on the big money interests and fight for working families. i don't think debbie has been that type of leader. so i would hope, and i said this many months ago, that she would step aside, we would have new leadership. >> maybe the point, madam secretary, is you have people in the democratic national committee who are supposed to

be, if you will, agnostic, about who the nominee is going to be. and they seem to have their thumb on the scale for you. they seem to be working against bernie sanders, their fellow democrat. >> again, i don't know anything -- i don't know anything about -- about these e-mails. i haven't followed it. but i'm very proud of the campaign that i ran. and i'm very proud of the campaign that senator sanders ran. >> in your view, any effort in the dnc to favor one candidate or another would have been improper? >> again, i don't have -- i don't have any information about this. and so i can't answer specifically. i can't speak to what people who were not working for me, who were saying whatever they were saying, i can't speak to that. i can only speak to my campaign. only days ago wasserman schultz had tweeted at reince priebus, hey, reince, i'm in cleveland if you need another

chairman to keep your convention in order. current vice chair donna brazile will serve as interim chair through the election. some 19,000 e-mails, one of the most danging i'm mails in the probe appeared to question senator bernie sanders faith. an e-mail from the chief dnc financial officer sent in may while those primaries were still going on did not directly mention sanders but it read, quote, for kentucky and west virginia, can we get someone to ask his belief. does he believe in god? he had stated on saying he has a jewish heritage, i read he is an atheist. now, all of this could make several points difference with my peeps, my southern baptist peeps would draw a big difference between a jew and an atheist. and on saturday, on facebook, i deeply regret that my insensitive e-mails would cause embarrassment to the dnc, the chairwoman and all of the staffers who worked hard to make the primary a fair and open process. the comments expressed do not

reflect my beliefs nor do they reflect the beliefs of the dnc and its employees. i apologize to those i offended. wheen ill the clinton campaign suggested that russia may be behind the exposure of the e-mails issuing a statement saying in part this is further evidence the russian government is trying to influs the outcome of the election. >> what's disturbing to us is that we experts are telling us that russian state actors broke in to the dnc, stole these e-mails, and other experts are now saying that they are -- the russians are releasing these e-mails for the purpose of actually helping donald trump. i don't think it's coincidental that these e-mails were released on the eve of our convention here. we also saw at last week at the republican convention, that trump and his allies made changes to the republican platform to make it more pro-russian. and we saw him talking about how nato shouldn't intervene to defend, necessarily should intervene to defend our eastern european allies if they're attacked by russia. i think when you put all of this together it's a disturbing picture.

>> they're pretty desperate pretty quickly, that's all i have to say on that. i mean it's a far reach, obviously. to leave their convention with that tells me that they really are trying to move away from what the issues are going to be in this campaign. it's pretty absurd. >> wikileaks does not say how it obtained those e-mails. nbc news has previously reported the dnc's computer network was breached in the past by russian government cyber operations. now in spite of all that the democratic convention kicks off today in philadelphia with the theme united together. head liners tonight include first lady michelle obama, and senator bernie sanders. also speaking today, senator elizabeth warren, who had been a contender of course in hillary clinton's search for a vp. senator jeff merkley and congressman garagealva are also speaking tonight. hillary clinton and senator tim kaine of virginia sat down for their first joint interview last night after a weekend rollout in miami which included kaine telling his life story in both english and spanish.

he spoke about his readiness and hope for a productive relationship with congressional republicans. >> as much as any human being would be ready, i'd be ready. you got to approach it with humility. but you know, missionary, civil rights lawyer, local official, state official, federal official, like i've climbed and i haven't missed a rung on the ladder, and if it were to -- if it were to come that way, i could do it. i was a brand-new senator in 2013, and the idiocy of congress was to shut the government down for two weeks in october. coming out of that the pressure was put on the budget chair paul ryan's soldiers and patty murray. conservative republican, progressive washington democrat, come up with a budget deal. nobody thought they could. but i watched patty murray and paul ryan who are principled people, cut a deal for the good of the country. i watched at the end of last year, when paul ryan worked and we got an appropriations bill that i thought was quite good. and when he went to the microphone to talk about that bill, here's what he said,

twelve people were hurt, three of them critically injured. the blast comes just days after a gunman killed nine people at a mall in munich and nearly a week after a teenager carried out an ax attack on a train. lucy, good morning. what are you learning about the suspect in this later attack? >> good morning, alex. authorities believe this attack was carried out by a 27-year-old syrian refugee who arrived to germany two years ago, whose asylum application was denied last year but he was allowed to stay. he was known to authorities as something of a petty criminal reportedly trying to take his own life two times in the past he was also reportedly seeking psychiatric treatment for that. but let me walk you through how this attack unfolded. ansbach is a relatively small town, population 40,000 people. this individual reportedly tried to enter the ansbach open which is basically a weekend music festival right around 10:00 p.m.

local time. he was either refused entry, or turned around, that is when an explosion took place, an explosive device went off killing him and injuring 12 people. now we don't know whether he was trying to plant this explosive device or whether this was intended to be a suicide attack. but the explosive device was inside a backpack and authorities say that there were sharp, metal objects within that bag, possibly nails and screws. we're not exactly sure. what that would indicate is that he was possibly trying to injury as many people as possible because of those items that were found in the bag. now, bavaria's top security official said that he believes this individual was driven, may have been driven, by religious extremism, calling it a likely islamist suicide attack. but authorities have raided his home. they're currently investigating. we're not going to know the motive or any possible ties to groups for quite some time, alex. >> okay, lucy. it all just seems too much for those folks in germany.
