i will proudly gather us in to our convention in the city of brotherly love and sisterly affection, the place where our nation was founded, and the place where we will make history once again! >> that was dnc chair debbie wasserman schultz chaining with hillary clinton on friday before announcing her resignation amid scandal. we'll have more on the e-mails that are now threatening party unity ahead of the convention. plus the democratic ticket, hillary clinton and tim kaine sit down for their first joint interview as clinton talks about the part of the republican convention that made her quote sad. and bernie sanders weighs in on his former rival's vp choice.
2:31 am
we'll tell you the person he would have preferred over tim kaine. it is 5:30 here on the east coast, 2:30 out west, this is "way too early." good morning, everyone. it is monday, july 25th. i'm alex witt. we have this breaking news out of florida. overnight at least two people have been killed and at least 14 others have been injured in a shooting at a nightclub. the incident occurred at club blue in fort myers where police were called to that club shortly after midnight. fort myers police noted that there may be two other crime scenes in connection with this incident. they are currently investigating that angle. two people are being detained for questioning. we're going to have much more on the story as we get it here at msnbc this morning. meanti

meantime, the democratic national convention opens today but with a much different tone. debbie wasserman schultz, the party's chair, will step down after thousands of internal e-mails were posted online by wikileaks. those e-mails contribute to the narrative that the national party had its thumb on the scale for hillary clinton's campaign over that of senator bernie sanders. in a statement, wasserman schultz listed her accomplishments over her five-year tenure, but did not acknowledge the unfolding story, and she added, quote, going forward, the best way for me to accomplish those goals is to step down as party chair at the end of this convention. before exiting she says she plans to open and close the convention, and also address the delegates, and was seen walking around on the floor of the hall yesterday. statements from the clinton campaign and president obama came out within minutes of each other applauding her work. clinton also announced that wasserman schultz would become the honorary chair of her 50-state program and that they would campaign together as she seeks re-election for her congressional seat in florida. the sanders campaign thanked her for her years of service but also added, quote, the party
2:33 am
leadership must also always remain impartial in the presidential nominating process, something which did not occur in the 2016 race. and the senator had this to say earlier in the day. >> well, no, nobody has apologized to me. this really does not come as a shock to me or my supporters. there is no question but the dnc was on secretary clinton's side from day one. we all know that. and i think, as i have said a long time ago, that the time is now for debbie wasserman schultz to step aside, not only for these issues. we need a democratic party that is open, that's going to bring young people and working people in to it, that is going to stand up and take on the big money interests and fight for working families. i don't think debbie has been that type of leader. so i would hope, and i said this many months ago, that she would step aside, we would have new leadership. >> maybe the point, madam secretary, is you have people in the democratic national committee who are supposed to be, if you will, agnostic, about
2:34 am
who the nominee is going to be. and they seem to have their thumb on the scale for you. they seem to be working against bernie sanders, their fellow democrat. >> again i don't know anything. i don't know anything about -- about the e-mails. i haven't followed it. but i'm very proud of the campaign that i ran. and i'm very proud of the campaign that senator sanders ran. >> in your view, any effort in the dnc to favor one candidate or another would have been improper? >> again, i don't have -- i don't have any information about this. and so i can't answer specifically. i can't speak to what people who were not working for me, who were saying whatever they were saying, i can't speak to that. i can only speak to my campaign. >> at the heart of all of this some 19,000 e-mails, and there is one string where wasserman schultz tries to get a staffer to help her get seven rare tickets to "hamilton," of course the musical, for her and college
2:35 am
roommates. in may a staffer appeared to e-mail the communications director, quote, wondering if there's a good bernie narrative for a story which is that bernie never, ever had his act together, that his campaign was a mess. specifically, dws had to call bernie directly in order to get the campaign to do things because they'd either ignored or forgotten to something critical. it is not a dnc conspiracy, it's because they never had their act together. communications director luis miranda replied true, but the chair has been advised to not engage so we'll have to leave it alone. meanwhile the clinton campaign suggested that russia may be behind the exposure of the e-mails issuing a statement saying in part this is further evidence the russian government is trying to influence the outcome of the election. and here's their campaign manager on cnn. >> what's disturbing to us is that we -- experts are telling us that russian state actors broke in to the dnc, stole these e-mails, and other experts are now saying that they are -- the russians are releasing these e-mails for the purpose of
2:36 am
actually helping donald trump. i don't think it's coincidental that these e-mails were released on the eve of our convention here. we also saw at last week at the republican convention, that trump and his allies made changes to the republican platform to make it more pro-russian. and we saw him talking about how nato shouldn't intervene to defend, necessarily should intervene to defend our eastern european allies if they're attacked by russia. i think when you put all of this together it's a disturbing picture. >> they're pretty desperate pretty quickly, that's all i have to say on that. i mean it's a far reach, obviously. to leave their convention with that tells me that they really are trying to move away from what the issues are going to be in this campaign. it's pretty absurd. >> wikileaks does not say how it obtained those e-mails. nbc news has previously reported the dnc's computer network was breached in the past by russian government cyber operations. now in spite of all that the democratic convention kicks off today in philadelphia with the theme united together.
2:37 am
head liners tonight include first lady michelle obama, and senator bernie sanders. also speaking today, senator elizabeth warren, who had been a contender of course in hillary clinton's search for a vp. senator jeff merkley and congressman raul grijalva are also speaking tonight. during her first joint interview with her running mate hillary clinton responded to the tone of the republican national convention, including the chance to lock her up over her e-mail server investigation and her response to the terror attack in benghazi. >> did you hear the republican convention chanting, lock her up? >> well, i didn't hear it, because i wasn't watching. but i certainly heard about it, yes. >> did you feel threatened by that? >> no. i felt sad. >> sad? >> i felt very sad, scott. i mean -- i -- i don't know what their convention was about, other than criticizing me. i seem to be the only unifying theme that they had.
2:38 am
>> though it is not just republicans calling for clinton to be jailed, "the wall street journal" reports that supporters of bernie sanders were chanting, lock her up at protests yesterday in philadelphia. and some progressives were wary of the pick of tim kaine for his moderate positions in the past, as well as his being one of only 13 democratic senators to vote in favor of fast track trade promotion last year. and support for the trans-pacific partnership saying on thursday, quote, i see much in it to like. i think it is an upgrade of labor standards. i think it's an upgrade of environmental standards. i think it's an upgrade of intellectual property protection. and while kaine did express some concerns, his office, and the clinton campaign, say he will join clinton in opposition to the trade deal. bernie sanders is also weighing in on hillary clinton's pick for vice president. yesterday on "meet the press" he said he would have liked to see someone a bit more progressive than senator tim kaine. >> i've known tim kaine for a number of years. we served in the senate together, obviously. tim is a very, very smart guy.
2:39 am
he's a very nice guy. his political views are not my political views. he is more conservative than i am. would i have preferred to see somebody like an elizabeth warren selected by secretary clinton? yes, i would have. >> authorities in philly on high alert following the recent spate of attacks on police and terror attacks across the globe the city is preparing for a number of large protesters this week. the massive demonstrations kicked off a day ahead of the convention despite the sweltering heat. at least 1,000 sanders supporters all took to the streets to rail against hillary clinton and the dnc. police say sunday's protests were, by and large, peaceful. turning overseas now, germany certainly on edge this morning after yet another attack in that country. a 27-year-old syrian national blew himself up outside a music festival in the southern city of ansbach last night. twelve people were also hurt, three of them critically injured. the blast comes just days after a gunman killed nine people at a mall in munich, and nearly a week after a teenager carried

out an ax attack on a train. lucy kafanov joins us live from munich. so lucy, what are you learning in terms of anything about the suspect in this latest attack? >> good morning, alex. as you said, 27-year-old syrian refugee, he arrived to germany about two years ago. his application for asylum was denied last year. he was supposed to be deported to bulgaria, but he was able to stay here, and we do know that authorities knew him as something of a local petty criminal. he had apparently tried to take his own life twice in the past, was reportedly seeking medical treatment for that. now how did this attack unfold? we know that he reportedly tried to enter a weekend music festival in ansbach. he was turned away, and that is when, just after 10:00 p.m. local time this explosive device went off, killing him, injuring at least 12 other people. this bomb was apparently inside of a backpack that this individual was carrying. and we're learning that it contained sharp, metal objects inside, possibly nails, possibly

screws. and what that would indicate is that he was trying to injure as many people as possible. bavaria's top security official said that he believes this individual was motivated by religious extremism. he called it a likely islamist suicide attack. authorities have searched his home, so we're probably going to get more details later in the day about potential motive or any links to known groups. now alex i did want to add ansbach is home to a large u.s. military base. we at nbc were able to reach out to authorities there. they told us no americans, no american personnel were caught up in that attack and they don't have any specific awareness of direct threats to the base at this point but obviously that information could change throughout the day, as more details emerge about what is now the fourth attack in germany in just one week. alex? >> yes, that last statement there absolutely shocking. so difficult for those folks in germany. nbc's lucy kafanov in munich. still ahead here on "way too early," a scandal involving one of the world's biggest pop stars gets caught up in the scandal
