the message of party unity was overcome by divisions from the primary. reopened by a leaked party e-mail showing favoritism, leading to rebellion around the city. the disruptions began over breakfast, they spilled into the streets and flooded the convention hall that night. it started just after 9:00 a.m. when ousted dnc chairwoman debbie wasserman schultz attempted to speak to her delegations breakfast and was shouted down by bernie sanders supporters. >> it is so wonderful to be able to be here with my home state. all right, everybody, now, settle down. everybody settle down, please. we must, under president hillary clinton, make sure -- we must under president hillary clinton make sure that our economy works for everyone. >> wasserman schultz's insistence on gaveling in the convention was scuttled while senator sanders attempted to

quell his supporters at an early afternoon meeting. >> despite the fact that our people were a minority on the platform writing committee we came out of that committee with, by far, the most progressive platform ever written in the history of the democratic party. immediately, right now, we have got to defeat donald trump. and we have got to elect hillary clinton and tim kaine. [ crowd booing ] brothers and sisters, this is -- this is the real world that we

live in. this campaign has been a fantastic beginning, a beginning, and from today, onward, we continue the fight. thank you all very much. >> they don't know -- >> that was the candidate's wife, jane sanders, caught on a hot mic expressing her concern of chaos in the convention hall. a spokesman later clarified that she means there will be a roll call vote and the senators aname will be placed in nomination. the democratic national committee now under the leadership of donna brazile issued a formal apology to sanders and his supporters but it was not enough to staunch the anger of die-hard bernie or bust contingents who booed mentions of hillary clinton, deepening the tension inside the hall.

lives of working families, the children, the elderly, the sick, and the poor. we need leadership which brings our people together and makes us stronger. by these measures any objective observer will conclude that based on her ideas and her leadership, hillary clinton must become the next president of the united states. >> a new pew research survey found 90% of those who consistently supported sanders during the primary now back clinton in the general election over trump. still, it was an emotional night for bernie sanders supporters. some were brought to tears during his remarks. bernie signs were even passed out reprinted in the team hillary font in a show of solidarity. here's what republican vice

presidential candidate mike pence said last night about disaffected sanders supporters. >> but to really find themselves shut out, to look at a ticket that doesn't give voice to what obviously millions of americans who align themselves with bernie sanders' message in their party and in their ticket i think is frustrating to them. and i understand that. look, but again that's their party. and they can cry if they want to, as the songwriter said. >> donald trump joined in, as well, tweeting, quote, bernie sanders totally sold out to crooked hillary clinton. all of that work, energy, and money, and nothing to show for it. waste of time. to which sanders' account responded, never tweet. if there was a calming voice for the party amid this fracture it was first lady michelle obama. while some idly speculated on twitter whether she would return the favor by duplicating some of melania trump's speech, the first lady, instead, told the story of her two daughters, growing up in the white house.

>> i will never forget that winter morning as i watched our girls, just 7 and 10 years old, pile into those black suvs, with all those big men with guns. and i saw their little faces pressed up against the window. at that moment i realized that our time in the white house would form the foundation for who they would become. and how well we managed this experience could truly make or break them. how we urged them to ignore those who question their father's citizenship or faith. how we insist that the hateful language they hear from public figures on tv does not represent the true spirit of this country. how we explain that when someone is cruel or acts like a bully, you don't stoop to their level.

no, our motto is, when they go low, we go high. and because of hillary clinton, my daughters, and all our sons and daughters, now take for granted that a woman can be president of the united states. so, don't let anyone ever tell you that this country isn't great. that somehow, we need to make it great again. because this right now is the greatest country on earth. >> incredibly powerful. meantime tonight's keynote speaker, senator elizabeth warren faced down chants of the audience of, we trusted you, and goldman sachs. warren didn't acknowledge the taunts and went on to attack

donald trump. >> trump thinks he can win votes by fanning the flames of fear and hatred. by turning neighbor against neighbor. but persuading you that the real problem in america is your fellow americans. people who don't look like you, or don't talk like you, or don't worship like you. he even picked a vice president famous for trying to make it legal to openly discriminate against gays and lesbians. that's donald trump's america. >> following the senator's speech donald trump tweeted, elizabeth warren often referred to as pocahontas, just misrepresented me and spoke glowingly about crooked hillary, who she always hated. truck also attacked warren during a campaign rally in north carolina last night. >> she hasn't done anything, this elizabeth warren, she's a disaster. she's the least productive senator in the united states senate, other than she has a big mouth. that's all.

welcome back to "way too early." three people are in police custody in fort myers, florida, as that community mourns the loss of two young lives following another mass shooting in this country. a vigil was held yesterday outside of club blu where a 14 and 18-year-old were killed hours earlier. at least 18 people in all were hurt. police say that gunfire erupted early yesterday morning, as an event for teens was wrapping up. detectives have not determined a motive but they have ruled out terrorism, and are searching for others who may have been involved. police say the club attack was part of a string of three related shootings that took place in the area. there are new details about the 27-year-old syrian refugee who blew himself up outside a music festival in germany sunday. german officials say the man recorded a cell phone video pledging his loyalty to isis. 15 people were injured in the bombing, four of them seriously. the isis affiliated amaaq agency

issued a statement saying a soldier responding to the militant group's call to target the west was responsible for the attack. this according to flashpoint intelligence. the statement did not indicate that isis had any role in directing or organizing the attack. it happened just two days after a shooting rampage that left nine dead at a munich mall. police do not believe the mall attack is linked to terror. and it's a journey for the record books. a solar powered aircraft landed in abu dhabi this morning after an epic 25,000 mile trip around the world. the solar impulse 2 spent 16 months circumnavigating the globe, powered solely by the sun. that makes it the first round the world fuel-free flight. two pilots took turns piloting the aircraft, which can only hold one person at a time. the plane has a wing span larger than a boeing 747, weighs as much as a car, but can only fly around 47 miles per hour. let's get a check on your weather now with nbc
