good morning. it is thursday, july 28th, i'm chris jansing, live in philadelphia. the democrats had a packed house here. senator tim kaine officially accepted the nomination as vice president. let's start with the president's speech delivered 12 years to the day since he first arrived on the national political scene with his 2004 speech to the democratic convention. last night he sought to compare the vision he shares with hillary clinton against the one donald trump laid out one week earlier. >> we democrats always had plenty of differences with the republican party, and there's nothing wrong with that. it's precisely this contest of idea that pushes this idea forward. what we heard in cleveland last week wasn't particularly republican and it sure wasn't conservative.

what we heard was a deeply pessimistic vision and that is not the america i know. most of all, i see americans of every party, every background, every faith who believe that we are stronger together. black, white, latino, asian, native american, young, old, gay, straight, men, women, folks with disabilities all pledging allegiance under the same proud flag to this big, bold country that we love. that's what i see. that's the america i know. after all these years, she has never forgotten just who she is fighting for. but hillary has been in the room. she's been part of those decisions. she knows what's at stake in the decisions our government makes. what's at stake for the working family, for the senior citizen or the small business owner. for the soldier, for the veteran.

top democratics. yesterday, donald trump batted back accusations that his party is being assisted by the russian government. he suggested that if they did hack into the e-mails, they should go a step further. >> it's just a total deflection. this whole thing with russia. by the way, if they hacked, they probably have her 33,000 e-mails. i hope they do. they probably have her 33,000 e-mails that she lost and deleted because you would see some beauties there. but i watched this guy move. he talked about -- we think it was russia that hacked. then he said could be trump, yeah, yeah, trump, trump. it is so farfetched, it's so ridiculous. honestly i wish i had that power. i would love to have that power, but russia has no respect for our country and that's why -- if it is russia. nobody knows. it's probably china.

him. i think he's going to respect your president if i'm elected and i hope he likes me. >> trump's statements on russia yesterday drew criticism from opponents and disagreement from allies. high profile trump supporter house speaker paul ryan released a terse statement. russia is a global menace led by a devious thug. putin should stay out of this election. later in the night, national security figures criticized him from the democratic conventions podium. >> donald trump calls himself the law and order candidate. but he will violate international law. this morning, this very morning, he personally invited russia to hack us. that's not law and order. that's criminal intent. >> donald trump today once again took russia's side.

he asked the russians to interfere in american politics. think about that. as someone who was responsible for protecting our nation from cyberattacks, it is inconceivable to me that any presidential candidate would be that irresponsible. >> let's get to some more highlights from the convention now. former new york mayor michael bloomberg blasted donald trump, calling him a dangerous demagogue. the former republican turned independent said he understands why americans would want a businessman for their president but made the case why trump isn't the right one. >> through his career has left behind a well documented record of bankruptcies and thousands of lawsuits and angry stockholders and contractors who feel cheated and disillusioned customers who feel they've been ripped off.

as it's been all summer long, 94, late-day thunderstorms will come through in the late afternoon into the early evening. they should clear out by the time we get to the main part of the convention, especially the 10:00 p.m. hour. on friday, heavy rain continues in philadelphia and there's even a chance of flash flooding in the region. it's going to be hot for one more day it looks like in many areas. d.c. will feel like 102 today. charlotte 103. it will remain hot in places like charleston. areas will cool off, this cold front behind the rain is going to bring some much-needed relief to areas in the middle of the country, the great lakes and also eventually into areas of northeast. look at chicago this upcoming weekend, high temperature only 78 degrees. that's cool even to go to the beach. minneapolis 78. cleveland stays nice, too. new york drops to 81 on friday with good, much-needed rainfall and even boston, too, much cooler temperatures. this is more like it in d.c.
