news conference, that's only raising more eyebrows about his ties to russia and whether moscow is trying to help him win an election. it's 5:30 on the east coast, 2:30 out west. this is "way too early." ♪ ♪ good morning. it's thursday july 28th, i'm chris jansing live in philadelphia. welcome back to this extended edition of "way too early." in a single speech last night, president obama capped nearly eight years in office by defending his terms and to use his words, pass the baton to hillary clinton. but once more he evoked the language of ronald reagan to contrast their vision with that of the republican nominee, donald trump. >> donald trump calls our military a disaster. he suggests america is weak. he must not hear the billions of

men and women and children from the baltics to berma who look to america to be the right of dignity, freedom and human rights. america is already great. america is already strong. and i promise you our strength, our greatness, does not depend on donald trump. ronald reagan called america a shining city on a hill. donald trump calls it a divided crime scene that only he can fix. he's betting that if he scares enough people he might score just enough votes to win this election. and that's another bet that donald trump will lose.

accepted the democratic vice presidential nomination. as he made his way on to the stage a group of protesters on the third tier unveiled a banner that read election fraud. kaine went on to deliver a speech attacking donald trump and paying tribute to former notable democrats. >> trump is a guy who promises a lot but you might have noticed, he's got a way of saying the same two words every time he makes his biggest, hugest promises. believe me. it's going to be great. believe me. we're going to build a wall and make mexico pay for it. believe me. we're going to destroy isis so fast -- believe me. there's nothing suspicious in my tax returns. believe me. thomas declared all men were equal and abigail remembered the

government. he dismissed -- he suggested that if they did, they should go a step further. >> it's just a total deflection. this whole thing with russia. by the way, they hacked, they probably have her 33,000 e-mails. i hope they do. they probably have her 33,000 e-mails that she lost and deleted because you would see some beauties there. but i watched this guy. he talked about -- we think it was russia that hacked. then he said could be trump -- yeah, yeah, trump, trump. it is so farfetched. it's so ridiculous. honestly i wish i had that power. i would love to have that power, but russia has no respect for our country. and that's why -- if it is russia. nobody even knows. it's probably china or could be somebody sitting in his bed. it will be interesting to see -- i will tell you this, russia, if you're listening, i hope you're

bookend and craft their narrative. and the fact that he was talking 12 years to the night since he had spoken in 2004 at the keynote address you kind of saw him -- and i think you saw a lot of people go wow in the crowd, can you believe it's that long? but the bookends of his ark really were quite something. and to see secretary clinton come out the way she did, we don't see a lot of body language from her too often, but that was clearly someone she has become much closer to -- >> what a remarkable trajectory that relationship has gone through over the last decade or so from when she flew over to chicago for this guy that people were buzzing about that they were going to raise money for. >> right. >> and eventually she ended up losing to him. look at them there. i mean, together. then you had tim kaine who i thought what an unenviable position to be between joe biden

let's get a check on your weather now with nbc meteorologist bill karins. hello, bill. >> you're in for an interesting day in philadelphia. it will be warm and hot. who knows maybe the hottest day of the summer we'll see from here on out. then you'll get thunderstorms. you're not alone in philadelphia. we have flash flood watches for 17 million people including the philadelphia area to dover and back through west virginia, kentucky, bowling green and down into nashville. potential for at least some torrential rain. it's been a dry summer in these areas, so it's not the end of the world. as far as the rainfall goes right now, the worst has been up towards the lexington, kentucky area and south of cincinnati. this is what eventually will transition late tonight and early tomorrow morning into areas of the east.

the internet went to a frenzy last night after tim kaine spoke during day three of the democratic national convention. the former virginia governor warm and jovial appearance inspired his dad-like presence. he is a father of three. one user posted a photo of him from the the family of the '90s tv show "full house" with kaine superimposed with the father with the caption, i knew i recognized him. someone tweeted tim kaine drives a subaru and the only bumper sticker says honk if you're happy. tim kaine goes through the drive-through twice when he forgets to say have a blessed one the first time around. i just want tim kaine to make me scrambled eks when i'm sad and ask me, what's wrong, scout? one more for you, tim kaine is not afraid to turn this car around and drive everyone back
