advise not to attack dnc speakers but it seems he just couldn't help himself. it's 5:00 a.m. on the east coast, 2:00 a.m. out west, this is "way too early." good morning, it's friday, july 29th. i'm chris jansing live once again from philadelphia where last night history was made. hillary clinton is now the first woman in the united states to win a major party's nomination. she savored the moment, recounting the humble roots of her family, and her accomplishments as senator as secretary of state. framing her vision for a united country, and sharply contrasting her message with that of donald trump. >> tonight, tonight we've reached a milestone in our nation's march toward a more

perfect union. the first time that major party has nominated a woman for president. i'm happy for grandmothers, and little girls, and everyone in between. i'm happy for boys, and men, because when any barrier falls in america, it clears the way for everyone. after all, when there are no ceilings, the sky's the limit. democrats, we are the party of working people. but, we haven't done a good enough job showing we get what you're going through. and we're going to do something to help. we will give small businesses like my dad's a boost. make it easier to get credit.

he spoke for 70-odd minutes, and i do mean odd. well, we heard donald trump's answer last week at his convention. he wants to divide us from the rest of the world, and from each other. he's taken the republican party a long way from morning in america midnight in america. >> outside the hall, hundreds of protester, still miffed about the platform and senator bernie sanders' loss. and clinton's speech wasn't without snags. some protesters in the room, wearing neon yellow shirts, still trying to shout down the nominee before being drowned out by people shouting hillary. but while trying to pull them into the new clinton era of democrats, she said this about bernie sanders. >> i want to thank bernie

we saw retired generals, admirals and veterans from iraq and afghanistan march out with the highly respected general john allen of the u.s. marine corps. the parents of a fallen u.s. soldier also took the stage. the father of army captain khan described his family as, quote, patriotic american muslims with undivided loyally to their country. he praised hillary clinton while repudiating donald trump. >> donald trump, you're asking americans to trust you with their future. let me ask you, have you even read the united states constitution? i will -- i will gladly lend you my copy.

grayson is facing new calls from within his own party to leave the florida senate race. in a politico report earlier this week, grayson's ex-wife claims he abused her during their 25-year marriage. and provided documentation alleging at least four calls to police. according to the website, the congressman vehemently denied he engaged in any abuse during their 25-year marriage and there are documents that show he says his ex-wife battered him in 2014. then came this exchange with a politico reporter earlier this week. >> congressman -- >> listen, i don't -- >> in 2012 -- >> i don't think you were listening. >> i'm sorry. >> i don't think you were listening, i said -- no, no, listen to me. you're blocking me from leaving. >> congressman when you -- >> i think you need to listen to me when i told you -- you're getting in my way. you're getting in my way my friend. you're assaulting a member of congress. >> i'm not assaulting you. >> you're pushing me, okay? >> the reporter tweeted so grayson just showed up to

politico hub and pushed me out of the way repeatedly, threatened to ask me arrested for asking him about abuse. a spokesman said in a statement the congressman had told the reporter earlier that he needed to contact his staff for comment and then the reporter went and came back to confront him with a camera in tow. the reporter then blocked the congressman from leaving as he tried to leave the event. the congressman specifically told the reporter, you're blocking me. but the reporter continued to harass the congressman. yesterday, senate minority leader harry reid, who has called grayson an absolute fraud, had this to say. >> thank you, having whacked his wife -- ex-wife around a few times, i think that he has support not even from the liberal groups anymore. i don't know who supports him anymore other than himself. i would hope that he would just drop out of the race. >> earlier this year, reid reportedly told grayson point blank in a closed-door meeting, quote, i want you to lose. over a house ethics committee investigation senator chuck schumer told politico grayson is

now you can watch nbc's coverage of the rio olympic games live at home or on the go. federal prosecutors are dropping the case against ingmar guandique the man convicted of murdering chandra levy back in 2001. the u.s. attorney's office in washington, d.c. says due to quote recent unforeseen developments it can no longer prove the murder case against guandique beyond a reasonable doubt. guandique was convicted for levy's murder in 2010 and sentenced to 60 years in prison. but he was granted a retrial last year after a fellow inmate and key witness account was called into question. a woman turned over recordings

she says she armando morales acknowledging he lied about a jailhouse confession from guandique. nbc news has not verified them independently. the u.s. attorney's office says once charges are dropped guandique will be released to immigration agents who are seeking to deport him. newtown, connecticut, is preparing to unveil a new sandy hook elementary school to the public. nearly four years after a gunman claimed the lives of 20 children and 6 teachers. construction of the new school was completed in 2015 after the old building was demolished. the $50 million project was paid for by connecticut taxpayers. the new facility will house students from pre-k to fourth grade, and have state-of-the-art security measures, including cameras, secure doors, and areas that are force resistant. pope francis continues his tour of poland this morning, he paid a somber visit to auschwitz the former nazi death camp. pope francis the third consecutive pontiff to visit the site where 1.1 million jews and other prisoners were killed.

once inside the barracks he sat in silent prayer and then met with several holocaust survivors. in california, crews are still struggling to get the upper hand on a massive wildfire bunch near big sur. at this point almost 30,000 acres have been burned, 41 homes have been destroyed. last night fire officials said the wildfire is only 15% contained. a bulldozer operator who died while battling the fire on tuesday has been identified as 35-year-old robert reagan. he was killed when the heavy piece of equipment overturned. let's get a check of your weather now with nbc meteorologist bill karins. happy friday, bill. >> morning, chris. much-needed rainfall moving through the northeast but it's going to cause some delays for your morning commute. we've had the rains now just ending in the nation's capital. washington, d.c., you look like you're going to be clear for at least the rest of the morning. baltimore, the rain's just about done for you. philadelphia, another half hour, you'll have a period of moderate rain. the hef ye stuff right around new york city and areas of southern connecticut.

this is where we watch moderate to heavy rain. that will continue throughout the morning. then the afternoon will be better. i mention the drought conditions. this was a new update from yesterday. as we put it into motion, the drought got course as we went throughout the summer and now we've gotten into the moderate to even severe categories from about new york city to boston. so this is a little one to two inch rainfall that we started with last night still getting this morning is much needed. also the heat has broken, too. temperatures today only in the 80s and even 70s in portions of the great lakes. 87 in philadelphia. look at boston only at 78 degrees with the clouds around and the rain early today. through the weekend, temperatures are not extreme kind of close to normal in the mid 80s in d.c., rochester in the 80s. cleveland in the 80s. new york city a cool sunday with clouds around but a very nice saturday. so in the southeast, kind of similar. the only problem is, it's going to be a very warm weekend. the cool air is not going to make it to the south. 100 today in charleston. 101 in jacksonville. atlanta that's pretty typical for you low 90s but raleigh southward still kind of brutal. and as we go throughout the upcoming weekend, temperatures
