unexpected way to start the election. so that's the strange thing to look ahead to. the awesome thing to look ahead to is the interview that lawrence o'donnell has scored tonight. good morning, everyone. i'm alex witt here in new york at msnbc world headquarters. here's what's happening. 100 days and counting. the race for the white house could come down to just a few key states. details on where both candidates are headed this weekend. new reports of hacking. this time the clinton campaign finds itself the target of possible attacks. so a question this morning who did it and why. a court strikes down one state's voter i.d. law. it could have big implications in one of the big november battle grounds. >> the zika virus has spread to florida. details on how far it has gone and who might be at risk.

we begin with presidential politics. hillary clinton and tim kaine will continue their three-day bus tour through the crucial states of pennsylvania and ohio today. the democratic ticket made its first campaign appearance since the convention when it kicked off its economy and jobs bus tour yes. at each spot, clinton and kaine used the momentum they picked up to attack the republican nominee. >> wasn't it different in cleveland? oh, my gosh. cleveland was -- it was a dark and twisted place through the mind of donald trump. >> i have so much confidence and optimism about our country. i don't recognize the country that donald trump describes. i don't recognize the mean spiritedness, the bigotry and the blustering and the bullying. i don't recognize that. because that is not who we are as americans.

>> their economy and jobs bus tour comes amid another cyber attack on democratic party operations. this time clinton campaign said a computer data program was hacked but no evidence that the campaign's internal systems were broken into. on the republican side, donald trump and mike pence are off the campaign trail after holding several events in colorado and ohio yes. he attacked general john allen who criticized him during his primetime speech this week. >> they were talking about the star power. let me tell you i think my kids have more star power. i really do. they had a general named john allen, and he -- i never met him. and he got up and he started talking about trump, trump, trump. never met him. is and you know who he is? he's a failed general. he was the general fighting isis. i would say he hasn't done so well, right? not so well.

>> politico is is reporting they tried to arrange a meeting between the kochs, but they reject his invitation. jacob rascon joins us from denver, colorado. with an early good morning to you. any reason trump and pence are off the campaign trail this weekend? >> they're taking a break. they haven't really explained that. they were on the campaign trail all week during the democratic convention. something he was able to do that he hasn't been able to do in a month and a half is is talk about polls. since he became the presumptive nominee, he was trailing clinton in almost every national poll. that of course until he got a bump from his convention, according to many polls. so he has been bragging about those all week. it will be interesting to see what kind of a bump hillary clinton gets out of her convention and to see if he'll be able to brag about polls

again. now, in colorado, of course, he thinks he has a shot. she's coming here. he will come here many times between now and november. he's down now in the polls to clinton. he is tied in some other swing states. he, again, is is counting on colorado as a swing state. here's what he says about winning and about hillary clinton. take a listen. >> if i don't beat crooked hillary clinton, she is as crooked as a $3 bill. if i don't beat crooked hillary clinton, i will consider this a tremendous waste of time, energy, and money. believe me. i'm not looking to be in history books. unless it's at the top where we do something great. >> something he's repeated many times. now, as we talked to trump voters, we were there of course yesterday talk to go those folks who showed up for the colorado

rally asking them about trump's message, whether they believed it was too dark or pessimistic. and a lot of them said, look, in our view, it's realistic. and they're with the campaign which says that a lot of people say the country is is headed in the wrong direction. trump says he is trying to tap into that. well, he doesn't say that but that's what he is counting on. polls 70% are headed in the wrong direction. he hopes that works for him, that that continues through november. >> hey, jacob, since you've been on the campaign trail both before and since the conventions, can you categorize the voters that are out there showing up for trump? remember, these huge groups and big, long lines and people turned because stadiums are too full even. what's it like now? >> sure. earlier we saw big rallies. the last couple of days they have been held in venues where they held 3,000, 4,000 people.

not the enormous 10,000, 15,000 people rallies he has had. because of the venue choice i'm not sure why you will choose not the gigantic venues. no, we haven't seen thousands of people waiting outside. we had seen that in the past. >> okay. jacob, thank you for that. let's go now to the democrats and another security breach. this targeting a computer server used by the clinton campaign. this is raising newconcerns. casey hunt has the latest from harrisburg, pennsylvania. good morning to you, casey. how is the campaign dealing with this? >> reporter: hey, alex. well, tim kaine and hillary clinton are heading out on what was supposed to be the triumphant second day of their post convention bus tour. there's new fallout from the hack of the democratic national committee and new questions about how much it affected the clinton campaign itself. ♪ >> reporter: hillary clinton today back on the bus.

>> hello, harrisburg. >> reporter: behind the scenes, concern with clinton as acknowledging friday experts are trying to figure out if the campaign was hacked as part of the data breach of the democratic national committee. a clinton spokesman saying in a statement, to date, they have found no evidence that our internal systems have been compromised. >> russia, if you're listening -- >> the news comes days after trump called on russia to find some 30,000 deleted e-mails from clinton's days as secretary of state. the general election's first full campaign day threatening more confrontation. >> trump is is going to be no more mr. nice guy. >> the new democratic ticket road tripping on a three-day family bus tour through the struggling rust belt in pennsylvania and ohio. >> i'm not satisfied with the status quo. are you? >> no. >> reporter: trying to convince working class white voters that trump isn't the solution to their economic pain.

>> my plan will create millions, millions more jobs than trump's. >> does anybody here believe one word of what he says? >> reporter: the former president back on stage decades after the clintons first campaigned here. >> pennsylvania has been very good to our family. >> it is the first time i campaigned on a bus and came to pennsylvania was way back in 1992. >> reporter: now democrats are worried that the keystone state might give donald trump the keys to the white house. donald trump is off theampaign trail today. but hillary clinton and kaine, as well as the former president, are going to head west to pittsburgh. and then on to ohio. youngstown and ending in cleveland today, alex. >> okay. you know, kasie, i asked this earlier. you've been on the campaign trail since before and obviously since this convention. can you categorize what kind of

crowds they are, how large they are, their enthusiasm. does it still feel like a dogfight? >> it absolutely does, alex. we were in harrisburg last night. you had a rowdy crowd. people were trying to drown out the chants of hillary. we were at a small business, which reflects more of the goal of this tour overall, right? this is reaching out to white working class voters. potentially in play for the first time in a while. the challenge for hillary clinton is is to convince people that she feels their pain while trying to have an uplifting and optimistic message. >> okay. kasie hunt, thanks for that. joining me now is jane tim and tom allen on of hrc. with a good morning to you both

i want to get your overall reviews of the dnc. compare and contrast it to the rnc. jane, you go first. >> i thought the dnc was so much more optimistic and classically political. instead of having trumps, they had allies, a wide variety of politicians pitching hillary clinton. the idea was here's the team behind her. look at all the people. hillary clinton may not be the most popular democrat. bernie sanders did capture more excitement. but looking around saying everyone on this movement, they're all behind her so you get behind her too. it was anti hillary. it was less boosting trump. >> okay. jonathan, your thoughts. >> scott baio and katy perry. i think the republican convention was the scott baio convention in terms of everybody other than the candidate, d-listers. people saying things that were detached from reality. democratic convention, you have barack obama, joe biden, michelle obama.

sort of the katy perry perfectly packaged, well produced kind of convention. but the candidates themselves i think were more evenly matched. totally different styles. donald trump compelling. hillary clinton a little less. talk building how dark things are for america. hillary clinton talk building that optimistic future that jane was just talking about. >> okay. jonathan, certainly clinton laid out a more progressive agenda during her speech. some say it had bernie sanders's prints all over it. do you think she went far enough to gain his supporters. >> she certainly went forward enough to gain his support. those who are not supporting her now that were with him were always pretty harshly anti-hillary people and went to bernie sanders for that reason. the democratic party will be largely unified in november. i don't think it was her concern. if it was, she wouldn't have picked tim kaine as a running mate. >> i'm curious about the behavior of donald trump, jane.

he was hitting her on foreign policy, the economy, calling her unfit to lead the country. these are seemingly endless. do you think the campaign worries at all about this coming off as disciplined? >> i don't think his campaign worries about spontaneity. they see it as an asset and raw and real. the problem is that hillary clinton will be able to set the agenda. donald trump responds to the bait when she lays it. she knows it. she had that one line that said if a tweet can bait him, should they have the nuclear codes. she's going to lay bait after bait and he's going to take it. that gives her a big advantage of is setting the tone, the conversation and the topic. >> yeah. september 26th with the first presidential debate is on hi calendar, that's for sure. new headlines about computers being hacked. this one after the dnc. wikileaks released. which camp do you think played these incidents better? trump or clinton camp? >> generally speaking this is a

terrible story line for democrats in general. reinforces -- even though this is a separate issue, reinforces the e-mail scandal for hillary clinton. it is something you hear about a lot. even when bernie sanders people were talking about it. they were holding up signs that says e-mail, can reminiscent of the earlier scandal, even though it was talking about this particular hack. the one caveat we make is when donald trump says russians should hack into american computers and release them to effect presidential campaigns it sounds kind of crazy. so i think he's seeding some of what would be a 100% advantage on this issue. >> okay. jane, what about trump, who is actively fund-raising for the general election. much of it comes from wealthy donors. politico says despite the efforts to have koch brothers support trump, they don't even want to meet with him. any sense that they are going to come around? >> everything we're hearing is absolutely not.

what was striking for me when we were in cleveland for the republican national convention, 30 minutes south, koch brothers were completely avoiding donald trump. they changed the topic any time anyone brought up donald trump. >> what about hillary clinton now making the way through the states. she's targeting the white working class voters. she has a real challenge she's up against. the latest poll numbers showing trump leading among blue collar workers. 62% to 23%. >> i don't see a scenario where it will flip. this is the core of donald trump's support is. i do think she can close the gap a little bit. while he may win, she may get the more moderate women in the suburbs of philadelphia. things flip. there are people are core based republican voters. and i think you saw her convention really appeal to

never trump republicans. appeal is is the leader who will be your president no matter who you vote for or what party you're in. that's not dontal trump. it is with me or nothing. >> do we have a percentage of how they make up the electorate? >> i don't have the number on hand. pennsylvania is a good place to look at it. turnout does decide the elections. it is a true purple state. you see more democrats come out during the presidential elections. and then in the off years, it does tend to flip with more conservative voters coming out. it will all come down to turnout. i think it's going to be huge. >> jonathan, can i get your reaction to a comment that hillary clinton made during the rally last night and get your reaction on the other side. let's play it. here it is. >> we're going to be working really hard. and you know i told bill if he thought he was going to get to retire he was wrong. you know, it's all hands on deck. >> she brings up bill clinton's role in the white house often.

explainer in chief and other stuff. do you think it's a wise move? >> i think it's a double-edged sword. and she's trying to find that perfect balance between trying to appeal to those who want bill clinton back. and i think particularly in the rust belt in western pennsylvania, easterohio, bill clinton is still popular. she did this in kentucky too, talking about having a role in the economy. there are certain parts of the country where bill clinton is a lot more popular than she is. women have trouble running for statewide office. she doesn't want to overemphasize it to the point it looks like she is saying is vote for me and you're voting for bill clinton to be president again. that's the part of the country where she wants to be emphasizing a little bit. >> all right. jonathan, jane, guys, thank you so much. appreciate it. >> take care. and his theory on why russia might have wanted to hack into the dnc e-mail system. here's a hypothetical. it has something to do with their perception of the u.s. their perception of the u.s.

new details this morning of an additional hacking of a democratic party computer system. this time reports say computer system used by the clinton campaign were hacked and signs point to russia's intelligence service as the culprit. all of this can comes in the wake of last week's release of the hacked dnc e-mails and reports that the democratic national campaign committee was hacked. that cites russian intelligence officials were also behind this hack. let's bring in patrick tucker. good to see you. thanks for joining me. >> thanks for having me. >> is it likely the russian government is behind this hacking and the release to wikileaks. how would we know for sure? >> right. they are two separate questions.

and the gap between the two questions is why this sort of attack has become so incredibly lucrative in the year 2016. strike one, crowd strike on june 14th publishes their analysis naming apt 28 and 29 as the two groups that broke into the dnc. they have long been known by cybersecurity experts to be part of the russian intelligence system. that is strike one. strike two, different cyber security comes that compete. fidelis. coming out and looking at evidence, endorsing their conclusion. strike three, the intelligence community leaking o background. nonetheless, it's a high profile leak that they have high confidence that apt 28 and 29, two sources that we now know are very likely to be affiliated with the russian government, russian state-backed actors, were responsible for the leak.

so that's three strikes right there. but the second part of the question, how would we know for sure? we can probably get to 80% is certainty. but in terms of tracing the order from, say, the kremlin to the fsu, to the gru, to apt 28 and apt 29, that chain of command, that's going to be a little more opaque. you can probably reach 80% certainty, and probably never reach 100% certainty. >> in your article in which you wrote there is considerable evidence showing the wikileaks dump was an act through the russian government. they worked through the proxies. they are trying to undermine hillary clinton's campaign. why go after one campaign and not the other? >> well, we don't have hard evidence that they haven't gone after the trump campaign. we just know they haven't is you've a proxy platform to publish any theft activity. but we don't know for sure. folks that i have talked to said that one of the motivations behind this -- and, again, we are speculating about their

motivation. so we can't really be sure why they did this. it may have been to sell graph a capability to do this to one party and not the other. and in effect show they could have influence if they chose to. but also that there is no target. even a former first lady and secretary of state that's beyond their reach. >> what about director of national intelligence james clap better who said his agency isn't sure this was russia. but he speculated on that. let's listen to that. >> their approach is they believe that we are trying to influence political developments in russia. we're trying to effect change. so their natural response is is to retaliate and do unto us as

we have done to them. >> do they have anything likely to go on? is it possible the u.s. is is hacking russian systems? >> it is the job of the nsa and folks in fort meade to develop any accesses into foreign communications. that is their mission set. it is is something that's public. breaking into the systems, this is part of spy craft. you can look to the jay he answers about the opm breach, for instance, in which he called china the leading suspect. but there hasn't been a formal attribution back to china because then you would have to do something about it. when asked about it, particularly in the senate armed services committee, they will ask is this an act of war? no. this is spy craft. it is is neither legal neuer illegal. once you take stolen information and try to influence a political outcome, that's a line in the sand. on the one hand, he will come out and say he's not 100%

certain. once you admit 100% certainty as director of national security, you question what are you going to do about it. but they are telling multiple publications they have high confidence. that let's you know they have reached it a while ago. >> wikileaks, the platform to which all of this was released, founder julian assange has pushed back on the case of the dnc release. here's whaez. let's listen. >> well, it is not proven whatsoever. we have not disclosed our source. of course this is a diversion being pushed out of the campaign. >> so would or should julian assange know definitively if these e-mails came from russia? >> well, whether or not he should know, that is a matter of some opinion. if you're trafficking in stolen property in order to release information that you think is in public interest, you should know where you received is the stolen property.

that is an item in the public interest. at the very least, even if you have to protect your source, shoe know who that source is. that is sound journalistic practice. at the same time, julian assange and wikileaks june 15th, they actually did disclose a major source. on twitter they tweeted that someone had just published a website blog with some of these particular documents and tweeted he says he is going to donate 200 pages via our platform. now i have asked about this on twitter. i said yes or no, please tell me, did you undertake any steps to make sure this individual who you are now excitedly touting as a potential source was not working on behalf of any foreign state or power. it's a simple yes or no question. and they haven't given me a simple yes or no answer yet. >> okay. well, we'll look for that. patrick teurbg, thank you so

conventions. it was by far better than the republican convention. the republican convention got tripped up first on mrs. trump's speech about the lifted passage from michelle's speech. and the whole ted cruz. and philadelphia, the bernie pocket got smaller and smaller. what they did most effectively was marginalize trump from the republican party. in other words, they were very critical of trump. but at the same time they were pushing him away from the republican party, pointing out in particular i think the president did a good job pointing out this particular candidate was not particularly republican. >> i will point out the dnc beat the rnc on nights one, two, three. the fourth night pretty much trump edging out hillary clinton in terms of ratings. in terms of a bounce, rick, what

about you? do you see a bounce for donald trump? >> trump got a little bit of a bounce. mediocre. clinton will probably get more of a bounce. and i really think this comes down to in a sense the w no. we know what we will get with hillary clinton. a lot of us don't like that. donald trump has failed to put out a vision of what a trump administration with a republican congress would look like in terms of the two issues that he focusing on trade, which i think he's wrong about and immigration, which he is partially right about. he just got so extreme with these walk back now the muslim ban. so we'll see. >> so you both praised president obama's speech. let's play part of that right now. take a listen. >> what we heard in cleveland last week wasn't particularly

republican. and it sure wasn't conservative. what we heard is a deeply pessimistic vision where we turn away from each other and the rest of the world. >> you both think it was a good speech. we have leading trump opponent erick erickson who tweeted his thanks to point out he is neither republican nor conservative. >> i think the speeches were well delivered and very powerful. in terms of how much they changed is is anybody's guess. i agree with rick of attacking donald trump without attacking republicans. because a lot of fight will be for independents. if you're a trump person. if donald trump you want

democrats and independents. if you're hillary clinton and you want republicans and independents along with your democratic base. so is that's where there's going to be a real fight. especially in those states like pennsylvania and ohio, north carolina, virginia, and florida. those are going to be real fights. and is so i don't know how much is going to move the needle. they still have a lot of work to do. we have the whole fall ahead of us. so time will tell. >> can you imagine die hard conservatives. how much do you think erick erickson will hurt donald trump? >> a lot of people who share his point of views. why did they choose someone not particularly republican? and, again, i think the party did a good job of isolating donald from his own party. hillary clinton doesn't have that problem. she has a little problem with shoring up her base. i once thought bernie sanders voters might look at donald. i don't believe that today.

>> rick, what about the koch brothers refusing to fall in line with trump. do you think they will eventually come around? because mike pence is a favorite of theirs? >> i don't think they will. donald trump called puppeteers is. he refused to take money and raise money. he criticized all his opponents. now he wants their money. second, he has a fundamental disagreement with them on trade. donald trump is wrong on tray. you have consumer prices rising as opposed to jobs going oversees. i think he's wrong about it. the second is immigration. koch brothers have been pro-am nesty. they are out of sync with his policies. >> michael pwhraobgberg, how much do you think his repwaoub will reach out to the independents out there? >> well, hard to is is say.

mitt romney gave an impassioned speech saying the same thing michael bloomberg said, calling him a fraud. bloomberg's speech was well received and well delivered at the convention. i don't know that it will necessarily move the needle. >> good to see you both. thanks, guys. >> thanks so much. the zika virus now in the u.s. authorities in florida now reporting the first signs of locally transmitted cases. let's go to sarah. with a good morning to you, sarah. what do we know so far. how worried are people? >> oh, good morning there, alex. this neighborhood north of downtown miami is known for its colorful murals and art gallery. now emerging as ground zero for the first suspected cases of homegrown zika. >> this weekend miami in the heat of battle against zika.

well, excitement is certainly building in rio. less than a week now from the start of the summer is olympics. u.s. teams arrived. they are all practicing despite lingering concerns about what's in the water. nbc's miguel almaguer explains. >> reporter: from the beautiful skyline just above rio where the stage is nearly set for the summer games, the view from just a few hundred feet above this

>> how about any advisers, any of them have significant ties to russia? >> there's this one father/son group of developers he knows and he do have ties to putin. they do real estate projects in moscow and he presumably would like to do business with them. it's so murky. how you do business in russia is so convoluted. we don't know exactly how you get things done in russia but it certainly can help if you have the president on your side. >> do we know what vladimir putin thinks of donald trump? >> he has made some comments. trump is right. he has said he's a colorful person. he's called trump a talented person, and i think more importantly when you look at russian state media, they've been pretty favorable toward donald trump. so not critical so far. they're sort of having what you might call a long distance friendship. >> okay. i thought you were going to say
