we begin with reaction from khizr khan after initially criticizing mrs. khan for not speaking, trump issued a statement and tweet calling her son a hero. >> i appreciate his statement calling my son a hero and making this clarification and statement. i appreciate that, but it sounds so disingenuous because of his policies, because of his rhetoric of hatred of division of dividing us. >> and here is trump during an interview that aired this morning. >> he said you have sacrificed nothing and no one. >> who wrote that? >> how would you answer that? sacrifice have you made? >> i think i made a lot of sacrifices. i've worked very, very hard. i've created thousands and

his absolute allegiance to russian wish list foreign policy positions, his effort then to try to distance himself from that backlash, which rightly came not just from democrats but republicans, national security and intelligence experts leads us to conclude he's not temper mentally fit to be president and commander in chief. >> and she and her running mate wrap up the bus tour through pennsylvania and ohio today, a new poll of battle ground states shows her with a two-point bounce from the convention. she stands at 43% to trump's 41. that poll conducted after the rnc convention showed trump with a one-point lead. katy tur is following the campaign and joins me with a good day to you my friend, let's talk about the campaign and how it's treating this. >> it's trying to not necessarily back away but spin it saying this is not an issue of khan's sons, they are trying to say it's an issue of radical

islamic terror. they say that's what killed khizr khan's son while serving. the reality is and the fact they have come out so many times to clarify statements means the campaign is trying to do sole measure of damage control. they won't get an apology from donald trump because he doesn't give apologies. you won't hear him say he was wrong. the most is they will try to move around it and frame it against hillary clinton saying she was responsible for the risement it's not necessarily working at the moment because there are so many people out there condemning him for not calling this son immediately a hero and not understanding the pain these parents may have gone through. we had john kasich come out and say the only way to honor a gold star family is to respect them and understand where they are coming from but donald trump's campaign manager today again when asked today by chuck todd why there are so many insults in the campaign, he said he was

basically trying to turn it around to hillary clinton. take a listen. >> this -- does that not raise a temperament issue? i assume you would not advice him to go about responding in this way. >> this is not a temperament issue. the clinton campaign needs to make it into a temperament issue for one reason because over 70% of the american people don't believe a thing she says. >> and the donald trump campaign does have that on their side at the moment. the unfavorability for hillary clinton is still very high. the trustworthiness is very high. but that doesn't necessarily mean that donald trump's unfavorables aren't also quite high when it comes to minority groups he's having a hard time reaching out to as minority groups include african americans, latinos and muslim americans who feel like they have been wrongly vilified by this campaign and ostracized by this campaign are worried it is getting worse. the statements do not help the campaign despite the attempts to refocus them. the one thing that people are

talking about most right now is what donald trump said in repeated interviews that his wife wasn't able to speak, that mr. khan's wife who was standing next to him during the convention was not able to speak because perhaps her religion didn't allow it. she came out with an op ed in the washington post today which is extraordinary strong that says that donald trump said that maybe i wasn't allowed to say anything, that is not true. my husband asked me if i wanted to speak but i told him i could not. my religion says all human beings are equal in god's eyes and when donald trump is talking about islam, he is ignore rant. the real islam and the koran, all the ideas from terrorists would change because terrorism is different from religion. so she is coming out and pushing back forcefully on this idea that she was not allowed to speak. this is another controversy the campaign had but remember, in the past two weeks, we've seen four, melania trump accusations of plagiarism and admission and

ted cruz not endorse him in the convention and donald trump went after ted cruz trying to link his father raphael cruz to the assassination of jfk and after that, we talked about russian hacking and how he called for the russians to find those 33,000 what he called missing e-mails from hillary clinton, those deleted e-mails and now we're talking about khizr khan. this is a retune from the campaign to jump from one controversy to the next to change the headlines and there by nothing sticks. >> most extraordinary, especially when you put it in that way one after the next in such a variety of top picks. it's incredible. i have to say also incredible is the washington post op ed today. i read it, the one by mrs. khan and reduced me to tears. i was crying when i read it. it was so powerful and she said it so beautifully and i think everyone should read it. quite a statement. stay with me, katy.

we'll bring in the conversation robert costa and also msnbc political analyst. robert with a welcome there. our discussion with katy and you heard some of paul manafort. what is overall the trump camp's line of defense. katy outlined four. let's talk about the last one. the back and forth with the khan family. >> i think katy outlined it very well. what you're seeing from the trump campaign is this idea that trump doesn't have to apologize, that in this campaign, he represents change in their mind. they want to run on being changed and different from the political establishment. a political establishment they have often framed in trump's speeches and advertisements as two po too politically correct. this is one of many that snagged the campaign in recent weeks but doesn't change the core strategy, which is a law forward as the change populace candidate. >> does it feel to you like they are almost doubling down?

is that the case? they don't walk them back. >> they don't walk them back at all. it's important to remember at the heart of the donald trump campaign is donald trump. paul manafort and their other advisors in trump's circle who are giving him counsel but as the candidate in this campaign and most campaigns usually that drives the approach and the way things are handled but in particular the trump campaign is dominated by the way the candidate thinks and the way he is resistant to having any kind of traditional norm or met trick applied to his campaign. that is shaping the response today. >> do you expect that to ever change, katy? >> no, it's not going to change because that's not what donald trump is. >> even with paul manafort -- >> it would be an admission of weakness. he doesn't apologize for anything. we've seen him come close to doing is now saying categorically that he believes john mccain is a war hero and that is something even though he said last july or august has dogged him throughout the campaign and now he's realizing

he needs to come back around -- >> he wasn't a hero because he got caught. >> he's not apologizing. >> just changes. >> he says it was taken out of context or changes but "the new york times" has a great break down of how the campaign is going to strike thgo g going to strategize this campaign and say the campaign will entirely focus on ohio, pennsylvania, north carolina and florida because those are four swing states he needs to 100% win in order to beat the electoral map otherwise it's too daunting or impossible for him to get the number of needs. so in those states, the donald trump message is to white working class voters. the economy has left you behind. i'm going to bring back those jobs that you once had. i'm going to bring back the glory of the jobs you once had. you're going to get pay raises. things are going to be better. it's not to change. it's not to pivot or focus

suddenly on the hispanic vote or african american vote or muslim vote or minority vote. the women vote, as well. what they are after is white working class men without a college degree to come out in record numbers in these battle ground states where factory jobs are lost and florida is not one of those states but a state with a high number of white working class voters who are not college educated. >> robert, to that end, here is this new york times article katy is siting in three states and yet, prior to this article, paul manafort releases an e-mail to donors or campaign supporters that says we see multiple paths to get to 270 electret votes. where does the truth lie? >> the truth is somewhere in between "the new york times" is spot on and those four states are where the trump campaign

seems to be mostly targeting the strategy. when you listen to trump himself speak on the campaign trail, he's often talking about states beyond those four. he's thinking about states like connecticut in new york traditionally blue states he believes because of his non-i d deelg appeal, this working class appeal maybe he could expand the map. his reluctant to spend on television and run a television-based campaign that's through him is the rating the airways with his appearances, it's going to be a gamble in a sense can they really turn those blue states but that's part of the hope of trump's campaign is that because he's not a traditional republican, maybe he can get new voters. >> katy? >> one of the difficulties donald trump's aids has and robert can speak to this, as well, he measures everything on poll numbers and if he's doing well in the polls nationally and doing well in the polls in some swing states, the idea of

spending money there is knot something that appeals to him because he doesn't feel like he needs to. spending money when you're already doing something right seems unnecessary. but here is the reality of it. he is doing strikingly well in a number of polls. he's beating hillary clinton in a number of polls and if he's not beating her, he's close to her after a campaign embroiled in controversy from day one. his message does resonate despite the outrage and they believe and donald trump fund mentally believes that if he can keep the attention on him and keep those poll numbers up, this sort of traditional spending that other campaign haves done in the past and hillary clinton is doing now is unnecessary. he's trying to rewrite the map and also trying to rewrite the book. >> and robert, in terms of poll numbers, the post convention bounce, trump seems to have earned points in his. the cbs not with standing saying he earned one but as we get more polls together, where do you think hillary clinton will fall?

>> because of her campaign well choreographed her convention, this idea they were able to have people like michael bloomberg and general alan on stage to make a pitch to moderate republicans and republicans skiddish about donald trump's temperament, i'm sure, i don't like to predict too much but i'm sure she'll get a bump as it usually happens after a convention, most interesting to be watching in the polls is trump as he continues to get e merlsed in the controversies and said on the campaign trail, no more mr. nice guy. this idea that trump is going to pivot or change in any way, it's really falling away. he's engaging fully in the different debates and things that flair up and so the clinton campaign is running a usual campaign of post convention, bus tour but trump is being trump and how does that impact at all? we'll have to say. >> all right. thank you both so much. let's go to casey hunt traveling with the clinton

campaign on the bus heading to columbus. good day to you, casey. what's the campaign looking to achieve today? >> reporter: hi, alex, yes. we're back on the bus, a bus on which we have spent many hours so far driving all the way from philadelphia across pennsylvania and into ohio. hillary clinton held a late event in youngstown, ohio last night, not actually getting into the hotel in cleveland until after 1:00 in the morning, and she's been in this area because it's full of exactly those voters that katy tur was just talking about, white working class voters, many of whom used to have really solid union jobs and voted for democratic for many, many years. this area, obviously, has changed quite a bit over the curse of the past couple of decades and it's a place where trump is resinating, and the challenge for her is figuring out how to make sure that she can keep especially those voters that backed barack obama.

many did it twice. by a wide margin but that's going to be her challenge here. she spoke to this question a little bit on the fox news is underlier today. take a look. >> the kind of inflammatory answers that trump has provided blame somebody, blame immigrants. blame muslims. blame women, blame somebody is attractive in the first instance but he offered nothing to help people. >> this of course was her answering the question of why this election is so close at this point, when trump does seem to have controversy after controversy and where she seems to have a number of trastructur advantages. what we've seen from her an the campaign trail over the course of the past couple days is trying to provide a counter

message to that very simple promise trump is making and trying to do that by convincing voters that trump is a con man and promised to businesses or to students at trump university, things like that and convince and sell to voters the idea he's making that same type of promise and will have the same result and not follow through. that's a challenging message to try to communicate when your opponent has their message plastered on a hat and saying to people hey, i'll give you back the life that you used to have but that isn't available anymore and it's a little bit difficult, too, because they are on the other hand of accusing trump after having a convention that's dark and pessimistic. people aren't feeling optimistic here. we've seen them try to walk the line. i'm not convinced it will be as

much of these republicans in the congress did their best for a generation to trash hillary clinton and for those who don't really look into these things, they tend to believe them, believe, take at phase value what the republican so-called scandal machine has come up with and that's really what caused those negative numbers but here in pennsylvania, i think that it's going to come down to a couple of things. you know, you have the 40% on the one side and the 40% on the other side that already have their minds made up and you are fighting over the middle. and what the middle in pennsylvania, i think are interested in are a couple things. number one the topic of decency that's come up after two conventions and national security. >> all right. with regard to trust, though, she's got three short months to fix that. what can she do?

>> i think for one thing, she needs to show her chops, as far as foreign policy. as i mentioned, i think foreign policy is going to be a crucial topic. here in northeastern pennsylvania, a lot of people are thinking about voting for donald trump and these are the same people that voted for john f. kennedy and maybe also voted for ron nooald reagan. one thing they had in common is they worked hard to sure up alliances with the baltic states and to push back against russian and soviet adventure is m. i was shocked, astonished to find out that the only thing the trump campaign did with the gop platform was to change it to withdraw support from ukraine with lethal defensive weapons. i was just amazed because john f. kennedy and cronald reagan ae

rolling over in this eir gravest we want to soften support for nato with people in estonia and lithuania and poland, allies like this, here in pennsylvania so many of us here are descended from people that came from that part of the world and are deeply committed to defending those places. >> yeah, absolutely and certainly you know your state well in terms of that regard. let's talk about what happened this week and someone that knows the state well. he sat down and offered this take on the race in pennsylvania. here it is. >> i've warned democrats, donald trump is giving a message that is resinating with white blue color workers who worked in factories, who worked on construction crews. we would be naive if he didn't understand that exists so this state is in play.

>> it in play. does hillary clinton have something to do with having to put it into play this time around? >> obviously, there is a lot of pain. there are angry people that want change and so somebody like trump that comes along and offers any kind of change just says change puts on a hat and makes people want to believe it. the problem is details aren't there. that will come out in debates. the other thing in pennsylvania is decency. people care about decency in this part of the world and that's true across america. america obviously runs off the rails and we do regrettable things like we put loyal japanese americans in camps in world war ii and mccarthy-ism. that wonderful patriot joseph welch who got up in mccarthy's grill and said have you no

decency at long last have you no decency and this mr. khan who came out and attacked trump and trump's indecent response to that is amazing. we've seen conservative commentators and called donald trump a moral pigomy. >> this may have far-reaching feblts effects. that said, you mentioned details. i want to get to the unemployment rate in your state. it's been rising steadily. it's higher than the national average. this is under a democratic president. a democratic governor so how do you and clinton convince voters voting democrat is the better choice? who can you tell them? >> independent studies have come out and i'm sure you've seen

killed at least 16 people. kerry sanders is in lockheart, texas where it happened. kerry, good day to you. what are authoritying telling you today other than this is just a tragedy? >> reporter: it is, indeed. this falls to the national chan transportation safety board to figure out what went wrong. there were a few investigators but a few stuck in washington as a result of bad weather. they will be out here later this afternoon and go out past the railroad signs here. you can see the high power lines here, 340,000 volts going through the high-voltage lines. it's believed that is indeed where the balloon drifted into to cause fire and electrocute and bring everybody down to the field here, which is sort of a field of corn. there are local authorities here investigating, but of the 16 people on board, we're now beginning to get the identities of some of them.

two of them you see pictured here are matthew and sunday rowen. matthew's older brother joshua released a statement that says no part, matt and sunday were incredible human beings. they touched so many lives and they will be incredibly missed. they made a difference in so many people's lives and were exactly the type of people you could ask for matt had just taken a new job working at army hospital as the chief of the burns child unit. he was doing some amazing work and research. sunday was amazing, as well. they were so happy together. they recently married within the last year. they were putting a life together for themselves. they lived in san antonio, but again, so many lives here that have been gone in an instant. there were some witnesses, one of them happened to be driving by in her car, snapped a picture of the balloon because she thought it looked strange because it was so low on the

horizon. this is what she had to say. >> as we were getting closer to it, we could see they weren't really moving. they were kind of hovering in the same spot and it was full of people and they weren't moving. as we got even closer, you could see the flame turning on and turning off and turning on and turning off and we thought something has to be wrong. >> reporter: did it look like they were trying to climb? >> you know, i don't know very much about hot air balloons. to me it seemed they count climb. they were stuck right above the tree line. >> reporter: while the ntsb will be here trying to determine what happened, they will not come to any sort of conlungclusiononclu. they will look at the weather, the mechanics and human factor making one thing more difficult, the most aviation accident there is no black box to give them that sort of additional information. alex? >> kerry, do we know the destination point, how far it

was where they were supposed to land? >> reporter: actually, we don't know the location they were supported to land. for folks familiar with this area, it's believed they took off from san marcos, if in the car a 15, 20 minute drive. if you've been on a balloon ride, they always start early in the morning and go off. they generally provide champagne. i am told that this was routine for them to have a basket with up to 16 people. one of the things they will look at, of course, is the temperature because according to that witness, they were trying to get more hot air into the balloon to rise, cause that balloon to rise and at least to the witness, did not appear to be going up and that could be a factor related to how hot it was at the time. it may have been in the high 70s. today it's going to hit 99. the temperatures do go up here rather dramatically as the sun comes up in the morning. >> they were unfortunately way too close to the power lines.

most. to the degree it's possible republicans stay home or don't vote for trump, at least a certain segment of them, this is certainly an example where that could play out. >> okay. so were you to be advising the trump campaign, what would you tell them? >> i really don't know because trump doesn't take that kind of advice. trump doesn't take advice of toning it down. paul manafort tried that. the let trump be trump phenomenon is where we are. i don't know advice you can give donald trump. >> you're republican. don't you want a republican in the white house? >> i don't know if i'm republican anymore. donald trump being head of the republican party makes me wonder whether the republican party reflects the values i care about. i wouldn't say a republican has to be in the white house for any reason. we want somebody to be president who will advance the country's interest and values. i'm not really convinced trump is that guy. >> so are you going to vote for

hillary clinton? >> i honestly don't know what i'm going to do. i seriously considered voting third party. or not voting at all in the presidential election or maybe writing somebody in like marco rubio or rick perry. >> so what is the one issue that you worry about as a republican, about having hillary clinton in the white house and does your concern about that issue, does it out weigh your dislike for donald trump? >> sure, the number one issue with hillary clinton is supreme court. as somebody who believes in constitutional conservatism and construction approach to constitutional jurisprudence, hillary clinton will reflect someone that reflects her principals and replace scolia. that worries me. i'm not convinced trump's nominees will be that much better. so while i know clinton as a known quantity, trump is an unknown quantity in that regard.

>> you said the same thing you said to me on monday that the gop is basically dying because of donald trump, but you also said that as a result, you think that the democrats will be in control of american politics for awhile yet to come. but that was on monday. after watching the democratic convention, do you still believe that's the case? >> absolutely. that was what was interesting amount the last day of the convention, right? hillary clinton and her team knows this, they know there are conservatives alienated by the way the republican party is going these days with trump at the top of the ticket and they are trying to bring voters along. we'll see possibly a realignment where the democratic party wins elections but maybe what the democratic party stands for in 20 years is different. if the republican party implodes and a lot that go to the democratic party, the coalition may change. i think the republican party is in a death spiral where it keeps driving out people and left with a rump of people much more about
