good morning, everyone. it is monday, august 1st, i'm alex witt. donald trump is facing criticism this morning. much of it from his own party, after making controversial remarks in response to the parents of an american soldier killed in iraq. khizr and ghazala khan took the stage thursday night to condemn trump's proposals and statements about muslims. khizr khan said trump had sacrificed nothing and no one and questioned if he read the u.s. constitution. in a statement saturday the trump campaign responded saying in part captain humayun khan was a hero to our country. the real problem here are the radical islamic terrorists who killed him. but it did not end there with both donald trump and khizr khan taking to the sunday shows this weekend. >> what sacrifice have you made for your country? >> i think i made a lot of sacrifices. i work very, very hard.

i've created thousands of jobs. tens of thousands of jobs. built great structures. i've done -- i've had -- i've had tremendous success. i think -- >> those are sacrifices? >> oh, sure, i think they're sacrifices. i think when i can employ thousands and thank you sands of people, take care of their education, take care of so many things, even in military, i mean i was very responsible, along with a group of people, for getting the vietnam memorial built in downtown manhattan, which to this day people thank me for. >> do those constitute the sacrifices that you were referring to when you were asking him the question? >> i appreciate his statement calling my son a hero. and making this clarification and statement. i appreciate that. but it sounds so disingenuous, because of his policies, because of his rhetoric of hatred, of division, of dividing us, and that is why i implored him to

read the constitution. >> and there's more. trump singled out khan's wife gas ghazala telling "the new york times" he wanted to hear her say something. in an op-ed mrs. khan explained why she was silent onstage writing in part without saying a thing all the word, all america, felt my pain. whoever saw me felt me in their heart. and both she and trump went on to say this over the weekend. >> it was very nervous, because i cannot see my son's picture, when i cannot even come in the room where his pictures are, and that's why when i saw the picture on my bag i couldn't take it, and i controlled myself at that time. so, it -- it is very hard. >> he said you wouldn't have even let his son in america.

>> he doesn't know. he doesn't know that. i saw him. he was, you know, very emotional, and probably looked like a nice guy to me. his wife, if you look at his wife, she was standing there. she had nothing to say. she probably -- maybe she wasn't allowed to have anything to say. you tell me. but plenty of people have written that. she -- she was extremely quiet. and it looked like she had nothing to say. a lot of people have said that. >> republicans, in particular, have been quick to respond to trump's comments. ohio governor john kasich tweeted there's only one way to talk about gold star parents, with honor, and respect. senator lindsey graham issued a statement saying in part, unacceptable doesn't even begin to describe it. and without mentioning him by name, both senate majority leader mitch mcconnell and speaker paul ryan rebuked trump's comments directed to khizr khan. in response to the back lash mike pence issued a statement saying he and trump believe that captain khan is an american hero and his family, like all gold

star families, should be cherished by every american. well donald trump spent the weekend campaigning in colorado. the clinton campaign is no longer running ads there, at least temporarily, after building up what they believe is a sizable lead. and while in colorado, trump worked the rope line even posing with these babies there, and relished his ratings win over clinton's convention speech, and issued a warning, as well. >> the numbers just came out for the big thursday. they call it big thursday, where i spoke last week, and hillary sometimes referred to as crooked hillary, spoke last night. and we had i think it was 35 million, and they had less. like 33 or something. in other words, we had more. and i have to tell you both numbers are great numbers. she makes it sound like everything's rosie dori, it's not rosie dori, folks.

friday trump was trapped inside an elevator with a group of people at a hotel for about 30 minutes. according to the paper, firefighters opened the top elevator hatch and lowered a ladder to get everyone out of that elevator. that's kind of scary. by the way fire marshal brett lacy was named civilian of the year for his role in helping the wounded after that mass shooting at planned parenthood. in an interview yesterday hillary clinton tried to recharacterize the fbi's finding on her handling of classified information, after presenting her with some of her statements about her private e-mail server. >> after a long investigation, fbi director james comey said none of those things that you told the american public were true. >> chris, that's not what i heard director comey say. and i thank you for giving me the opportunity to, in my view, clarify. director comey said that my answers were truthful and what i've said is consistent with what i have told the american people. that there were decisions discussed and made to classify

retroactively certain of the e-mails. >> but in a congressional hearing on july 7th, director comey directly contradicted what you had told the public. >> secretary clinton said there was nothing marked classified on her e-mails either sent or received. was that true? >> that's not true. >> secretary clinton said i did not e-mail any classified material to anyone on my e-mail, there is no classified material. was that true? >> no, there was classified material e-mailed. >> as for clinton's claim that director comey called her statements truthful "the washington post" gave it a rating of four out of four pinocchios. let's turn to the business headlines. stress test results on european banks they're helping to boost markets overseas. let's go to cnbc's nancy hungerford who's joining us live from london. what else is driving stocks this morning. >> good morning, alex. well, european markets actually paring some of the early gains we saw on the big sigh of relief over the banking stress tests were a bit mixed now but it was a solid month for july not just here in europe but in the u.s.,

which saw the s&p 500 and the due jones hitting fresh record highs in the month as you know a lot of the strength at the end of the week was in tech from earnings with the likes of google parent alphabet, amazon, facebook all really outperforming in the last week's session. u.s. futures today are called higher i should mention but just slightly. now, back to tech. looking at the private side a big story today that everyone will be talking about concerns uber in china. it has emerged that uber is going to be merging with their top rival in china and keep in mind this has been a heated rival both companies have been pouring money at the competitive race there subsidizing drivers and that has cost uber in the neighborhood of around $2 billion. under this merger plan they will join forces, talking about a combined entity worth around $35 billion. uber will retain about one fifth stake in that entity and in return the chinese company will

i've seen these videos ten, maybe 15 times over in the last 24 hours from ellicott city, maryland, and just incredible the power of water rushing that quickly this is down main street. this is only 12 to 15 miles due west of downtown baltimore. this isn't like this is up in the hill country. this is just amazing. look how deep the water is on the doors and the windows in the background. all those small businesses their businesses are ruined. the damage to the cars, two lives lost in a, a little beautiful little town there. that's got a long ways to go towards recovery. so let's get into this morning because we have additional flash flooding. we're in that season now there's a lot of moisture available. very humid. summer time is known for flash flooding events. flash flood warnings through the heart of missouri, crossing interstate 70. we've had numerous reports of one or two feet of water over roads throughout this region so life threatening flooding is ongoing right now in central missouri. haven't heard of any problems, no fatalities or even evacuations. these thunderstorms are training in this same area.

it's almost like a train they just follow the tracks in one line and the rainfall just continues to pound the same areas. the other story is in the tropics. really as we go through august, september, october those are peak months. this could be our next tropical storm. right now it's just south of hispaniola dominican republic, and watch this heading due west. looks like it's heading more for the yucatan of mexico, maybe belize and the southern gulf of mexico. nothing at this point takes it back up towards the u.s. alex. so that's good. but our friends in mexico may have to deal with a tropical storm or low end hurricane in the days ahead. to the east, shours and storms today but not as bad as the weekend. >> heads up it's going to be hurricane season. let's get a check on the other headlines, and we go to the control room and louis burgdorf again. take it away. >> good morning. the teen choice awards aired last night it featured the normal fun and games but also took on a more somber tone when jessica alba took the stage with teens who been affected by gun violence from the victims of the

evacuate their accommodations friday night after a fire started in the basement. the team was reportedly away from their rooms for about a half hour when they came back to find shirts and even two laptops stolen. the team is said to be most bothered by the fact that the fire alarms within their buildings were deactivated. one veteran athlete who competes in shooting said he slept through the fire and was not woken by knocks or phone calls. scary story there. now just the idea of skydiving is a terrifying thought for most people i know it is for me. but jumping from a plane at twice the normal height without a parachute just seems absolutely insane. but luke aikens made history yesterday when he did just that. becoming the first person to jump from an airplane at 25,000 feet minus a parachute or wing suit. this all happened near simi valley, california, guided only by lights and gps. aikens aimed for a 100 by 100 square foot net as he plummets closer and closer to earth

there are still plenty of unanswered questions about that deadly hot air balloon crash in central texas saturday. but ntsb investigators think the balloon probably hit a power line before it plunged to the ground killing all 16 people on board. meanwhile, as nbc's janet shamlian reports, some of the victims have now been identified. >> reporter: this is the last known photo of the hot air balloon at sunrise on saturday taken by erica gonzalez. >> to me it just seemed they couldn't climb. they were -- they were stuck right above the treeline. >> reporter: moments later the unthinkable. the balloon bursting into flames and plunging to earth. killing pilot skip nichols and his 15 passengers. the ntsb says the balloon traveled eight miles before striking a high powered
