pass, but the burden of voting for a divider, voting for excluder will not, will put such a burden on our souls for the remainder of our lives. that we will not be able to bear it. russian reset. the republican presidential nominee denying the reality of vladimir putin's military movements in ukraine. >> he's not going into ukraine, okay, just so you understand. he's not going to go into ukraine. you can mark it down. you can put it down. you can take -- >> he's already there, isn't he? >> well, he's there in a certain way. and calling interference, riding a post-convention bump, hillary clinton slamming trump for questioning the debate schedule because it'll be up against nfl prime time. >> they set up a schedule last fall. and neither campaign, because who knew, we didn't know who the nominees were going to be. i'm going to be there. that's all i have to say.
9:01 am
and good day, everyone, i'm andrea mitchell in washington. donald trump jumping back into a politically damaging debate with the khan family. unable to restrain himself after these comments from kazir khan. >> his ignorance. he can get up and malign the entire nation, the vil jens, the communities, the minorities, the judges, and yet, a private citizen in this political process, in the stewardship of this country, i cannot say what i feel. that is, that proves the point, he has not read the constitution of this country. had he read that, his behavior would be different.
9:02 am
>> minutes after the discussion with savannah guthrie today, tweeted trumped tweeted mr. khan who does not know me viciously attacked me from the stage of the dnc and all over tv doing the same nang. nice. while trump picks a fight with the khans. hillary clinton got a post-convention poll bump up seven points with trump falling below 40%. kelly o'donnell is here with me now. we both were at the convention, then we see she did get a bump. it looks as though, you know, these things are volatile, but she did get what they probably hoped for, at least out of her speech and out of that well-programmed conventioned. >> it was well-executed, well-programmed and even with the bernie sanders sort of resistance at the beginning of the week, it finished well for hillary clinton, what they were hoping to achieve. and, as conventions go, sometimes they deliver a little post-convention bounce and that's what we're seeing. >> she got help from her
9:03 am
opponent because donald trump immediately went into a series of issues, not the least of which, of course, which has just happened with the khans. how do you explain his unwillingness to resist. now tweeting after the "today" show appearance, you know, there's a lot of criticism. you've been tracking republicans, tell me how republican office holders and particularly candidates, john mccain -- >> some discomfort, yes, so much discomfort from republicans who donald trump calls himself a counterpuncher. and there are a lot of people in public life who you could probably throw the counterpunch and trump has weathered the controversies that have followed, but when you're talking about the parents of a fallen soldier, when you're talking about a gold star mother, and of course, they have a right to speak out. and he could choose to not respond. but that's just not what he's been able to do. so we're hearing from a number of republicans. first we heard from speaker ryan and the senate majority leader mitch mcconnell today a long and detailed statement from john
9:04 am
mccain who's up for reelection in arizona. we've also heard from roy blunt who's up for reelection in missouri. notably in that, he names him, both mccain and blunt name donald trump. others who are in, you know, coming to this from like the foreign policy point of view or from the armed services point of view have been speaking about this sort of sacred sacrifice of this family, leave them alone. a less political tone to those statements. but, for republicans, this is an issue. democrats were running those campaigns, trying to unseat republicans or win seats. are certainly using this. and donald trump has tweeted away as he has been known to do, critical of this family. >> paul ryan, both leaders and ryan, mcconnell resisting naming trump or being overtly critical, then on paul ryan's website, on the speakers website, we see a new picture just posted, they can say it's not related, but look at him holding up the constitution. that is a not very subtle
9:05 am
connection. >> and this was taken at a press conference in july, and typically the speakers office puts out a list of photos, kind of recapping the last week or the last month. this was the first among them. they would not make a specific link to the khan situation, but of course we know that kazir khan held up his own pocket constitution. so it leaves for others to infer what paul ryan was trying to say. he has been vocal about protecting the rights of all persons, not being in support of the ban donald trump has talked about. and so this is a not so subtle form of protest from the speaker of the house. >> kelly o'donnell, thank you very much. john podesta joins me now, fresh back from the bus trip, hope you both survived, sort of. >> hope you got a little rest after the road trip, andrea. >> oh sure, sure, of course we did. now, first of all, you've got a
9:06 am
bump. you know, and everything is very, very intangible in politics, but is this mostly because of her speech or because of what donald trump has been doing the last few days? what is your take? >> well look, i think we had a very good convention. we don't put attach into any one poll. we never have, we never will, but we had a good convention, i think really laid out the fight she's fought, the individual people whose lives she's touched, and you know, it culminated in a series of great evenings, but then most particularly her speech where she was able to connect all of that and talk about the fights of her and what she wanted to do for the country. and that of course, donald trump for, you know, whatever reason decided that his take away was to start fighting with the khan family which is really despicable. >> let me ask you about something else that he and
9:07 am
certainly paul manafort on "meet the press" indicated, it seemed to be trying to step back from his commitment, we stated in fact lester holt that he would be at all of the debates. do you think he's not now trying to get out by questioning the timing which had been set by the debate commission, which does coincide with nfl lights? >> yeah, i think it's important to point out to your viewers that this debate schedule was set a year ago, and now he's coming up with this ma larky about how it's trying to influence viewership, but they set that debate schedule a year ago. hillary accepted it, we will be there, we are ready to debate. and what he's up to, whether he's trying to be dodging why, dodge out of the debates or not, it's, you know, it's hard to tell, but it's certainly a bunch of my larky right now. >> dually noted that hillary clinton is in omaha, nebraska, today and is going to be with warren buffett.
9:08 am
this is the second billionaire, multi-billionaire that she has had endorse her in the last week, mike bloomberg of course a member of the convention. what is the strategy here? >> lock, i think we want to talk about what it's going to take to build jobs, to, you know, do the kind of investments that we need, whether it's infrastructure, investing in manufacturing, getting this economy going so that people's wages can go up, that people can succeed and that the public can understand what she's trying to do and i think both of those gentlemen are good about knowing something about the economy. donald trump's claim to fame, four bankruptcies, their claim to fame is they've managed a good business. as we also got the endorsement of mark cuban in pittsburgh, you were with us for that. so, i think people who really are entrepreneurial, are building successful businesses, know that what she's offering is
9:09 am
the chance for small businesses, entrepreneurs to succeed, but most importantly, for american, for the american people to get more jobs and see their wages going up. and in contrast, he hasn't put anything out, other than more trickle down economics, more tax cuts for the very wealthy. >> he would argue that he is a well-known businessman who has built a big brand and has run a successful business. >> yeah, but his big businesses have gone into bankruptcy, he stiffs his contractors. he hurts his employees. people in the casinos in atlantic city lost their health care, what they went into bankruptcy. you know, i think that if you talk about, to the people who have done business with him, for the most part, what they'll tell you is he, you know, makes big promises, then he stiffs them and walks away. >> and mark cuban brought a different kind of flavor to the stage saturday night when we were in pittsburgh.
9:10 am
-- i'm sorry, where were we saturday night? pittsburgh. >> we were also at youngstown, but he was in pittsburgh. remember, we made multiple stops that night. >> it was a fascinating tour through the rust belt. there was a broad message here. he's a younger entrepreneur. in his batman t-shirt, bringing a lot of energy. and a different kind of vitality, what are you seeing there? >> well look, you know, we were really happy to get his endorsement. you know, he is been involved in talking about this campaign for a while. i think particularly after the two conventions, he was convinced that donald trump was wrong for america, that hillary clinton was right for america. and he was colorful in getting on the stage and he's from pittsburgh, i think he brought a real sense of community there. he obviously doesn't live there anymore, but he still does that.
9:11 am
i think most importantly what he talked is people who want to go out and take risks, they don't borrow money from their father and put their name on the lights. they take risk, they build successful businesses. he's invested in numerous successful businesses. he's been successful until his own tv show on "shark tank," but i think it means something to have him out there in support of her. and it was a little bit different than our usual events and we're really glad to have his support. >> on another subject, why did hillary clinton say to chris wallace on fox that the fbi director had said she'd been truthful. what he said, there was no evidence she was untruthful. she got four binoek co.s for that. >> i think what she said and what we believe is -- and what i think director comey said in his testimony when he finally
9:12 am
testified before congress was that director comey believed that she was telling the truth when she said she did not believe that those e-mails were unclassified. they had no classification markings, they were coming from over 300 senior level individuals people who had vast experience of handling classified information. and that was her only comment. i want to reiterate, she also said that she thought having a personal e-mail system was a mistake. these were e-mails that were traversing unclassified government systems as well as coming to her e-mail system, but she said it was a mistake, she learned her lesson, said she wouldn't do it again. so i think all in all, i think we've heard a lot about this, but what director coe my finally concluded was that no reasonable person would conclude that she
9:13 am
was doing other than telling what she believed at the time which was they were not classified. >> she is in omaha, nebraska, of course headquarters for warren buffett, but there is another college reason for being in omaha. you want to explain? >> for winning statewide and one for each congressional district. we think that we want to be out there and at least the congressional district that includes omaha, so we're campaigning there it has reached into iowa and these are battleground states from our perspective. >> and you think it could get down to a point where every single electoral vote counts? >> look from the beginning, we've been fighting for every vote in the primary, we'll fight for every vote in the general election, of course every electoral vote to that she could
9:14 am
be successful and we're feeling confident that she's the right choice that she's got a history of making a difference for people, getting real results for people. and she's got the right program gone make an economy that's going to work for the middle class for taking on a system that's been rigged for top breaking that down and recreating an economy that's going to work from the middle up. and i think that, you know, warren buffett agrees with than he thinks the tax system's unfair, should be paying a lower tax rate than his secretary, and he said so on many occasions. we need to, we need to get through and break down that rigged system that benefits only the people at the top. and i think that although warren buffett has been very successful, he agrees with that point that we need more fairness in our society. >> john podesta, looking forward to seeing you again and i hope soon on another bus trip.
9:15 am

of them. >> how heart breaking comment by mrs. khan speaking about her son sacrificing his life for his fellow soldiers. today gold star family members responding to donald trump's comments about the khan family. they issued a statement addressed to trump saying in part, your recent comments regarding the khan family were repugnant and personally offensive to us. you are not just attacking us, you are cheapening the sacrifice made by those we lost. ermine miezing the risk our service members made, make for all of us. joining me now is the founder and ceo of iraq and afghanistan veterans of america, paul rikoff. thank you very much. and i wanted to also bring to you, you've probably just seen the vfw's statement, there's no older veteran's organization dating back to 1899, and the vfw put out a statement which is remarkable. it says, election year or not, the vfw will not tolerate anyone

berating a gold star family member for exercising his or her right of speech or expression. there are certain subjects that no amount of words mything can repair. giving one's life to the nation is the greatest sacrifice followed closely by all gold star families who have a right to make their voices heard. your views? >> the outrage is universal, andrea. you know, donald trump said some controversial things over the last few years, but this might be the most controversial yet. i've spoken to a number of gold star families, many veterans, and i think the outrage really acrosses all partisan and political lines. i think this is not about politics. this is not about partisanship, this is about honor. this is about integrity. and this is about appreciating the fact that the gold star families have sacrificed something that we can't imagine. it's called the ultimate sacrifice for a reason. because there is no comparison. nothing compares to the sacrifice of the khan family. and they should be off-limits, they should not be attacked, and their voices are important, no
9:21 am
matter what political party they come from, their voices are important and the outrage that i've seen across the community is just getting started. i think we're going to see more statements, more letters and more outrage over the next couple of days. >> now in the political context, paul, we saw his attack on john mccain, many of us who've known john mccain over the years and know what he suffered thought that that would be a breaking point with traditional republicans in particular. that did not have the impact. so is this a case where we are seeing things through one lens and donald trump knows that he can tweet his way toward just blowing right past this outrage? >> you can't tweet your way out of this one. the condemnation is coming from people like john kasich, recently john mccain, it's coming from within the republican party, veteran's groups and we to want elevate the conversation here to use this as an opportunity not only to guard our gold star families
9:22 am
who really should be sacred in this country but to underscore the magnitude of their sacrifice. they have really endured something that most of the american public can't imagine. they have dealt with death, they have dealt with the afteraffects, and most of america's been living life uninterrupted, any comparison is really out of line. when we asked our members, only 22% of them felt that the american public understood their sacrifice. so this is not just about donald trump, hillary clinton said the same thing, she'd receive the same backlash or any other public figure, anybody who wants to be in the public's fear and wants to lead our country has to understand that our gold star families are off-limits completely. and if you cross that line, there's going to be a ferocious response from the military and veterans community and from the public. and i would remind everybody, there are 22 million veterans in this country. and they vote. our members vote at 93%, i think they're a political jump ball. this is the thing that could him pact, you know, how they view this election. >> and john mccain is in his own tough reelection fight right now. has issued a statement says in
9:23 am
recent days, donald trump disparaged a fallen soldier's parents, he's suggested that the likes of their son should not be allowed in the united states. sop say nothing of entering his service. how deeply i disagree with the statement. i hope americans understand the remarks do not represent the views of officers or candidates. a telling response from john mccain. >> yeah, i think that's important. you know john mccain is offering kind of a voice of reason on military and veterans issues. he's been an guy over the past few years that calls it like he sees it, but again, this is much bigger than john mccain. you know, we to want emphasize, there've been over 6,800 gold star families since 9/11. what they've been experiencing and enduring is an important reminder for america about the cost of war. so i hope we hear from more gold star families. i hope they can remind everybody that during this election, there are folks in iraq and afghanistan, and with regard to captain khan, he is an american hero and he has a must limb-american hero and one of many that served valiantly.
9:24 am
our military is maybe the most diverse group of people in america and representing the tremendous tapestry, service, and i hope we understand that captain khan, i believe 16 other musl muslim-americans have been killed. must be respected, honored, and cherished. >> paul, thank you so much. as always, thanks for being with us. >> thank you, andrea. and coming up, our fact check, donald trump trying to clarify his comments about russia and ukraine. you're watching "andrea mitchell reports" only on msnbc. ♪ if you have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis, isn't it time to let the real you shine through? introducing otezla (apremilast). otezla is not an injection or a cream. it's a pill that treats plaque psoriasis differently. with otezla, 75% clearer skin is achievable after just 4 months, with reduced redness, thickness, and scaliness of plaques.

ukraine. all right. you can mark it down, put it down, you can take -- >> he's already there, isn't he? >> well, he's there in a certain way, but i'm not there yet, obama there, and frankly that whole part of the world is a mess under obama. >> donald trump trying to clarify his comments this morning, tweeting, so with all of the obama tough talk on russia and the ukraine, they've already taken crimea and continue to push, that's what i said. well, not exactly. joining me now is michael mcfall former u.s. ambassador to russia. good to see you. can you explain -- >> actually i can't see you, but good to be with you. >> virtually, at least, can you explain how donald trump could not know under questioning that russia and russian-backed forces had taken over eastern ukraine? >> no. i can't. i mean, it's been a major news story for the last two years. it's the first time since the

end of world war ii that borders were forcibly changed in europe. there's no excuse to not knowing what is going on in that part of the world. >> at the same time, you've got him saying in the past that he had a relationship with vladimir putin, now he says he doesn't know vladimir putin. there were a lot of questions about what putin is trying to do and whether russia is behind the hacking into democratic organizations. including the dnc, of course. what do we know about putin and trump? this is thomas roberts back in, i guess it was 2013. >> do you have a relationship with vladimir putin? a conversational relationship or anything that you feel you have sway or influence over his government? >> i do have a relationship. and i can tell you that he's very interested in what we're doing here today. >> what exactly is your relationship with vladimir
9:30 am
putin? >> i have no relationship with putin. i have no relationship with putin. >> so what is the concern, if any, about the business dealings of trump businesses with russians here and in moscow and also around the world. the and the role of his campaign manager paul manafort who has represented some of the ukrainian, pro-russian ukrainian interests? >> well, first of all, just those two clips together, just so confusing what mr. trump actually means, but to the bigger point, i think two things are most important. one is that mr. trump holds the policies, the policy views, that mr. putin holds, when he says we should revisit whether crimea should be part of russia or not. that's what mr. putin supports. by the way, 100 other countries have voted against that idea, mr. trump supports what putin says, when he says we should rethink our relationship with our allies, that's exactly what mr. putin thinks.
9:31 am
so on the the policy issues, that's the most important. but secondly, with respect to our own elections, i think the evidence, it's skrecircumstanti evidence that russia played a role. there's no question they stole the e-mails from the dnc and there's no question that wikileaks released that information in a way designed to affect our electoral politics. the only piece we don't know for sure is did the russians give it to wikileaks, but who else would have given it to wikileaks? that is new and unprecedented as well. and even more unprecedented than mr. trump then encouraged them to continue their espionage efforts. >> and their ability to hack. i've been told you would know better than i having been the ambassador that the russians are better than the chinese and that the russians are, you know, better than the north koreans. the russians have tremendous

9:33 am
state and democratic nominee is emotional. there's a gender, very disparaging and patronizing gender implication there. >> well, with respect to the first comment from peskof. it's silly to say that russia does not conduct espionage on, you know, everybody knows that. and anybody who knows anything about this business knows that. they should -- they're not doing their job if they're not trying to gather intelligence on, you know, cyber systems. and by the way, so do we, and any country that has the capacity does that. with respect to the second question, it's a good point. yes, mr. putin has an emotional, personal grudge with secretary clinton. and it comes down to something that happened -- there are other issues, but one new particular, december 2011, she accused him of falsifying an election.
9:34 am
he's never forgotten that. >> thank you very much, ambassador to russia, thank you. and coming up, flash point, donald trump is not backing down from his comments against the parents of the fallen muslim-american soldier. we'll have more on this, you're watching "andrea mitchell reports" on msnbc. how i stay active. and to keep up this pace, i need the right nutrition. so i drink boost®. boost® complete nutritional drink has 26 essential vitamins and minerals, including calcium and vitamin d to support strong bones, and 10 grams of protein to help maintain muscle. in three delicious flavors. i'm not about to swim in the slow lane. stay strong. stay active with boost®. at clorox 2 we've turned removing stains into a science. now pre-treat with clorox 2! watch stains disappear right before your eyes. remove 4 times more stains than detergent alone.

it's just really, really disturbing. and i guess, you know, i want to say thank you to people like john mccain and even mitch mcconnell and even mike pence who have said that this is over the line. you cannot go in with your criticism and defamation on a gold star family. you can't do it. and the fact that they're muslim does not allow you to do it, doesn't green light you to do it, it's wrong, and americans all over this country know it. and so, i just want top say that, you know, i'm very proud of the khan family my son is active duty right now, he's muslim he serves his country and like millions of o americans have. do their pn the military and out in service of this
