top of the media narrative, so i think he'll talk about it and talk about it fairly quickly coming out here on the stage. we'll see. he's unpredictable. given the tweets he's put out yesterday, this morning, talking about the public television appearances over the last 48 hours i do think we'll hear from donald trump. how is his campaign trying to put this behind him. you're seeing this not just from trump himself, but from his surrogate today. that's an attempt to change the conversation away from the khans and instead to terrorism. talking about radical islamic terrorism, trying to shift the conversation away, focus on something that's been a strength of donald trump's when it comes to national security and terror. that's something the campaign would rather be talking about nan the nar ty that puts the nominee against two parents that have been very public in what are these emotional interview us talking about their son and their hope for republican leaders to rebuke their normal e

knee. that sets up a whole other issue for these vulnerable gop leaders on capitol hill and elsewhere. >> some republicans have come out against the statements. we have roy blunt, someone who endorsed donald trump in a tough bat until missouri to keep his seat. but we have john mccain, a man that did not go to ohio for the convention, was not endorsed trump, but what more can you say about his comments today? >> one of the things that's notable about john mccain's statement is it's lengthy talking about his own family's military service saying he is not morally superior to donald trump. trying to laying the playing field but at the same time is unwavering of what trump has said. and that is there should be no defamation of those who served
11:05 am
the country. there should be respect in a sacred honor to those who served. i just received a statement from south carolina governor who said as a member of a military family and governor of a proud military state that has been recognized as the most patriotic, there's a lot of military in south carolina, my heart and thanks to the khan family for their enormous sacrifice for our country. as far as i'm concerned, they have the standing to say whatever they want in the political process and should not face criticism for it. so that points to the notion the khan parents being private citizens, and not public figures. even though participated in the national convention and spoke critically of donald trump that what they gave in terms of the loss of their son's life allows them to speak freely and what they have to say has a kind of power and merit that they should not be criticized for it. there's a strong backlash among
11:06 am
republican office holders about what donald trump said and so much of that is in a way distancing themselves from him and also wanting to speak to their own constituents and the history of the party to be aligned with the military. >> so let me talk about the vfw earlier today. they put out a statement about donald trump's comments saying election year or not, the vfw will not tolerate anyone berating a a gold star family member for exercising his or her right of speech or expression. so as we just got that news from kelly about the governor of south carolina, jacob -- she was going to be voting for the nominee is there going to be a bridge too far for certain republicans that have given an endorsement of trump with this language where they think, wow, we can't g forward back iing

someone like that th who is willing to double down and not surrender over a point of attack like this. >> i think it's probably too early to talk about that right now. i think we have -- we have been covering this campaign for almost a year now. this campaign and what we have seen again and again from donald trump are moments like this. flash points like this where we all sit and talk and wonder will this be the point that republicans come out against him. we saw this a couple months ago. so i don't know you can say if this is going to be an impetus for republicans or people in leadership to withdraw their support. privately in the conversations i have had with leaders and aids and strategists it is giving people pause, but the overwhelming thought seems to be we have seen this movie before. this has happened repeatedly back to last summer when he
11:08 am
questioned john mccain's status as war hero. all of them to a tee saying this is a a media narrative and not a real issue for donald trump. we are talking to foiks who said he wishes donald trump didn't say what he said, but there are bigger problems that trump is prepared to handle. i think the question remains, how much is this going to impact donald trump with the general election battle. >> hallie jackson, thank you so much. kelly o'donnell in d.c., we'll go back to that trump event k078ing up in the next hour. we'll take you there. i want to share more of the khan's compelling and emotional sger view today from "morning joe." specifically when mrs. khan

11:10 am
statement about how this is going to play out with voters. as a veteran, how do you think they are going to look at this information, look at the candidate and how that's going to impact them come november about whether or not they want to vote and trust donald trump? >> you got me a little emotional looking roigt at this thing. and i wish you hadn't played that before this interview. but what i'm shocked about is what's taking place in this country. with donald trump almost getting away with almost anything he says. hooim reminded of the time where a a few months ago where he stood up giving a speech and said i can stand in the middle of new york city and shoot someone and i'd probably still get votes. so i thought about that when this incident took place because metaphorically speaking, this is
11:11 am
exactly what has happened. you have blacks that have been maligned. you have mexicans that have been maligned. it's talked about judges and muslims. he hasn't let go of people with disabilit disabilities. this is a shock for me. any person with some level of human decency could stand there and just say i'm going to vote for this. >> the statement you're referring to is donald trump saying i could stand in the middle of fifth avenue and shoot somebody and wouldn't lose any voters. that happened at the beginning of 2016. and all of this with the khans was born because they challenged donald trump as saying in their speech at and trump responded on sunday after a question from abc about what he has sacrificed. take a look. >> what sacrifice have you made? >> i think i made a lot of
11:12 am
sacrifices. i work very, very hard. i have created tens of thousands of jobs, built great structures. i have had tremendous success. >> so when you hear that and also when you talk to veterans and gold star families, what do you think it means to them to hear a candidate try to compare what their sacrifice means to the ultimate sacrifice of what it is to be a gold star family. >> well, as part of the muslim community, i was always taught that loyalty to kocountry was a part of my faith. that's the fundamental part of my faith as taught by islam. so what the khans have been doing is telling america, look, there are some bad apples, but they don't represent you or i. this muslim marine who did lay down his life for this country. i think it's really painful,
11:13 am
trouble i troubling. i was getting emotional as you were playing that because i could feel the pain of the mother. in my situation, i happen to be of pakistani descent and a muslim marine. so this hits home in a different way that perhaps maybe some other veterans may not feel the same as i do. >> so when it comes to that, and i know about the organization that you have, do you think when it comes to being an american service member we should have those descripters as we talk about our military whether they are a female service member or latino service member. should it happen to be latino or service member bho happens to be muslim. shouldn't it be about our american service first and isn't that what most folks in the military take avow to?
11:14 am
it's our institution. >> i would wish that would be exactly what you just said. i would wish that's what we followed. in the world we're living in now, unfortunately, i have to talk about my faith and highlight myself as being a muslim marine. maybe 15 years ago would you have talked about that, no. because this is something we repeated over and over again. it was not a luz limb god or jewish god. it was god, country, core. so the only reason i highlight muslim marine or service to america is because i want fellow americans to know that we are people that love america. if not more than you. we are loyal to this country. we care a about this country and want to see the success of this kocountry and not someone like donald trump come in and take us 50 years back. >> do you thu trump owes afteran
11:15 am
apology? >> i think if you wanted to win votes, he would say i'm sorry. this is an area i should not have gone into. john mccain talked about it. we don't care whether they came from or about their ethnic background. we know this person laid down his life and that's a reality. that's something that donald trump hasn't done or any member of his family has done. >> the gold star families we know about the fact this is the ultimate sacrifice. we certainly don't want to forget what they lived through in the moment of that time certainly for the khans or the weeks, the days, the minutes after losing a loved one. thank you. appreciate your time. >> thank you so much. >> want to pass along this programming note. mr. and mrs. khan is going to join chris matthews tonight on msnbc. we have been asking in our pulse

the two have talk about what we're witnessing as a country. i want to lead off with new numbers. we have this poll out and pointed out what this means as we look at this. that poll trump's was the first convention since 1984 to actually hurt a candidate with those less likely to vote for him at 51%. mitt romney was at 38%. that's a number that they have never been over before consistent ly. what do you think this means for the trump campaign if you were part of his team? >> the numbers are concerning. it shows the small bump out of the convention is not going to last. i don't think the convention helped him all that much. we'll see how hillary clinton's convention factors into her numbers. he's heading sbo the general

election season not in a terribly strong position in a time he should be trying to bring voters in and cede adding to his base, he's not helping with the khan controversy and with his comments on russia. he's in a spot now he's not adding voters as he should be. >> following the convention, clinton and tim kaine took to the road and were on this bus tour of the rust belt. we have hillary clinton in omaha today getting this endorsement from warren buffett. how would you rate the post convention swing and the campaign being able to do enough to hold on to this bump. because trump maintains the controversy of headlines. >> he does maintain the controversy of headlines. i think it's starting to add up against him. i think the democratic convention was enormously successful in telling hillary clinton's story. and demonstrating unity and a positive vision for the country
11:51 am
and that was in direct contrast who what they saw the week before in cleveland. since is the convention, clinton and tim kaine headed off on a bus tour. they have been adding on endorsements. and poll after poll, it demonstrates that they are a forward-looking ticket. they want to bring the country together. we're stronger when we're together. it's a much more appealing argument than what trump is trying to argue on a dilly basis. >> we have this report that's coming out today that jeb bush's top adviser is going to leave the republican party to become an independent. and says if the presidential race in florida is close, she's going to vote for hillary clinton. that's something that hasn't been confirmed by us, but if that is true and sally bradshaw is definitively landing that as her position now, what does that signal to other republicans? >> i don't think voters make
11:52 am
decisions based on what operatives do, but it's another bad headline for trump showing more disunity in the party. we're not uniting and trump is not working to unite the party. there's still fractures. if this news is true, it reminds people of that. i don't think that they make decisions. >> it's not so much political opera tys, but jeb bush did not come to cleveland. he will not endorse donald trump. and to ryan's point about that, yes, i think not everybody is going to do what he or she does based on their political choice, but it does show a wind of what they are not willing to do. >> i agree. and i don't think people make decisions on who to vote for based on what somebody else is is doing, but i do think that endorsements or lack thereof either help your credibility or hurt your credibility. the fact that no former living president came to donald trump's convention was a a big deal.
11:53 am
it will impact his vote. >> just to be fair about george w. they did not come to the mitt romney convention. >> they endorsed mitt romney though. >> the did, but didn't want to be seen as a drag on the convention. there are certain ways to characterize. >> i think there's no dus agreement about why they weren't there. >> you were relieved it's four years later than 2012. great to have you on. i appreciate your time. update on the pulse question for today. should donald trump apologize to the khans for his comments. 91% of you think yes. 9% say no. check it out. welcome to opportunity's knocking, where self-proclaimed financial superstars pitch you investment opportunities. i've got a fantastic deal for you- gold! with the right pool of investors, there's a lot of money to be made. but first, investors must ask the right questions

the cat and the fiddle, the cow jumped over the moon... then quickly fell back to earth landing on the roof of a dutch colonial. luckily geico recently helped the residents with homeowners insurance. they were able to get the roof repaired like new. they later sold the cow because they had all become lactose intolerant. call geico and see how much you could save on homeowners insurance. welcome back. we are watching the event in ohio. this is where donald trump is going to be speaking in just a little while coming up a at the

hop of the hour. he was expected to have a roundtable town hall discussion with folks. we found out they moved the podium and microphone and moved chairs out so there might be a moment to take questions. otherwise it's going to be a conversation with the folk there is. we are monitoring new fears surrounding zika virus. rick scott announcing ten new cases in his state. this after four cases were confirmed last week. the governor calling on the cdc to send an emergency response team. andrea mitchell spoke to the national institute of infection shs diseases about how this may have e spread. >> someone who had a travel-related case, got infected elsewhere, were bitten by mosquitos that bit individuals who had never left the continental united states. >> so far, the state of florida
11:58 am
tested more than 2300 people statewide for the zika virus. the state of emergency declared for maryland in certain parts, this after a devastating storm ripped through the region triggering flash floding. it swept away cars, roads and two people there killed. 100 others rescued. one woman stranded in it her car was rescued by a chain that was formed by bystanders to pull her to safety. while there are flood watches in effect for parts of the country, mike pseidel has more from maryland. >> good afternoon, thomas, from the banks of the river and just downstream from maryland this is the town that got hit by a flash flood on saturday night. 6 inches of rain in about two hours and a lot of water coming through. it came up 13 feet in 30 minutes. can you imagine the force of the water and cars everywhere. they have cleaned up over 100 cars in the main street area.
11:59 am
but look at this one. this suv just imagine how strong this water was rushing downhill and down the river. on top of the car, that's what authorities do to mark that they have checked the car for any humans. two fatalities, both from folks trapped in cars. i have covered a lot of tornadoes. this reminds me of tornado aftermath. just look at the trees being plowed down. debris everywhere. it was a lot of water. the senator from maryland referred to as a wall of water. this looks like part of a car coming down the river. what they are trying to do is get all this e debris cleaned up so it doesn't end up down river past the dam. you don't often see this flash flood, but when storms dump that much water, it came down the hillsides on saturday.
12:00 pm
cleanup is going to take awhile. main street is shut down as emergency officials and crews try to get that street back to working order in the next few weeks. it's going to take awhile. thomas, back to you. >> maryland doesn't see that toip of flooding. thank you very much. and thank you all at home. that's going to wrap up this hour for me. i'm thomas roberts. kate snow picks things up. you're going to take us to ohio for trump. >> absolutely, good to see you. good afternoon to all of you at home. any moment now donald trump expected to take the stage in columbus. it's his first rally since his conflict with the family of the khans began. the relentless back and forth has not slowed down and we were expecting to hear more from trump within the hour. he may or may not take questions from the crowd. it's not the first time that we have heard the name before. this
