main street is shut down as emergency officials and crews try to get that street back to working order in the next few weeks. it's going to take awhile. thomas, back to you. >> maryland doesn't see that toip of flooding. thank you very much. and thank you all at home. that's going to wrap up this hour for me. i'm thomas roberts. kate snow picks things up. you're going to take us to ohio for trump. >> absolutely, good to see you. good afternoon to all of you at home. any moment now donald trump expected to take the stage in columbus. it's his first rally since his conflict with the family of the khans began. the relentless back and forth has not slowed down and we were expecting to hear more from trump within the hour. he may or may not take questions from the crowd. it's not the first time that we have heard the name before. this story starts in 2004 with a
12:01 pm
"nightly news" update shortly after khan was killed in iraq. >> captain khan of virginia taught swimming to handicap children while at the university of virginia. he was due to return home last month, but his iraq tour was extnded. he died on june 8th. captain khan was 27 years old. >> donald trump, you're asking americans to trust you with their future. let me ask you, have you even read the united states constitution? i will gladly lend you my copy. you have sacrificed nothing. and no one. >> he was very emotional and
12:02 pm
probably looked like a nice guy to me. his wife, if you look at his wife, she was standing there. she had nothing to say. she probably maybe wasn't allowed to have anything to say. plenty of people have written that. >> what sacrifice have you made for your country? >> i work very hard. i created thousands and thousands of jobs, tens of thousands of jobs. built great structures, i have had tremendous success. >> those are sacrifices? >> he's not worthy. he has no decency. he has a dark heart. >> i don't think he knows the meaning of the sacrifice. meaning of the word. >> trump's attempt to clarify saturday night in a statement calling captain khan a hero to our country, but saying the real problem, the radical terrorists who killed him and others who try to enter the u.s. >> the way he showed disrespect
12:03 pm
towards the gold star mother of this country, that says it all. >> your wife. >> my wife. the braf mother of my son. >> donald trump is tweeting. i was attacked by mr. khan. am i not allowed to respond? hillary voted for the iraq war, not me. >> this election will come and pass, but the birdie of voting for a divider, voting for excluder will not -- will put such a burden on our souls for the remainder of our lives that we will not be able to bear it. >> so with that review, let's start with hallie jackson in columbus, ohio, ahead of the trump rally expected to start at any moment now. we understand that trump just held what we call a mini press conference with reporters. do you expect trump to speak
12:04 pm
anymore about his back and forth about the khan family? >> i do, but let me explain what just happened in the last eight minutes here in columbus. . i gave the control room a heart attack because we ran off as his handler said that trump was holding a mini press conference informal. you saw the entire media section run out into the hallway for what is a rare event on the campaign trail, which is donald trump coming out and speaking to the press, not with the podium, not with microphones or formalized way but just approaching the media and us curious to hear what he said. all he it was talk about people not allowed to get into the event here in columbus. and then he walked away without taking questions, although we and others shouted questions related to the khans given that has been the biggest haetdline for donald trump in the last 72 hours. trump ignored those questions and walked presumably backstage where he will come out and possibly take questions from the
12:05 pm
audien audience, possibly just hold a rally. that sets the scene for how the last ten minutes have been here. as for what could happen in the next ten minutes, trump is somebody who often at these rallies and events addresses whatever the media narrative of the day is. this is certainly been the top story, so i would be surprised not to hear him talk about it, but i was surprised about six minutes ago when he had didn't answer questions from us in the hallway. we'll shee how he responds. his campaign trying to change the subject and try to shift to talking about terrorism. that is ground on which trump almost certainly feels more comfortable given it's been a cornerstone of his campaign since the beginning. will we hear from him, maybe. i would put the chances better than 50/50. when you talk about to supporters here in the room, in surveying a dozen or so, almost all of them say this is a media con strakt and media narrative.
12:06 pm
none of them appear phased by his comments. >> and it was trump who tweeted this morning again about this? >> e yes, a couple times. one of the things he noticed, and it happened as the khans were airing their interview on the "today" show this morning, trump tweeted out that the two of them, the two parents have been, have been all over tv and gave a sarcastic "nice." unlike with the judge a couple months ago when trump attacked him, the khans have been able to respond in this instance. they have been very public in their response, blanketing the broadcast networks over the last two or three days to make their case against donald trump. clearly, trump has noticed. >> hallie jackson in columbus, ohio, standing in front of the podium where we expect donald trump. standby as we await his arrival.
12:07 pm
let's get perspective from team trump. i'm joined by steve cortez. lindsey graham said there used to be some things sacred in american politics like criticizing the parents of a fallen soldier, even if they criticize you. john mccain writes, in recent days donald trump disparage d aa fallen soldier's parents. e he suggested that the likes of their son should not be allowed in the united states. to say nothing of entering its service i cannot emphasize enough how deeply i disagree with mr. trump's statement. i read those because those are republicans along with speaker ryan, along with senator mcconnell, do you standby your candidate? >> i do standby him. my candidate makes mistakes. being a surrogate is like being a kicker for tom brady's patriots. you get on the field a lot because he likes to make news? >> was this a mistake? >> in this regard, i think it was a mistake to respond.
12:08 pm
i wish he had taken the george bush approach, which is she has a right to an opinion, we disagree with it. my guess is i don't know what he's going to say, but we're not going to hear him talk more about it. the mainstream media is being unfair in trying to twist this into a narrative of trump versus the khans. >> hold on, how are we twisting it? they came out on thursday night and gave a speech at the democratic convention. friday they did some interviews. donald trump on saturday does an interview and clips of that interview from abc are released in which he seems to take on the khans. he very directly says mrs. khan, why wasn't she talking? he questioned why she hadn't spoken at all. i don't think we're making up the narrative. it's gone back and forth. including this morning. hallie jackson said donald trump tweeted, mr. khan viciously attacked me from the stage of the dnc and now all over tv doing the same.
12:09 pm
a lot of republicans are saying why doesn't he just stop talking about it? >> again, my guess is he will. but those republicans you named have been incredibly anti-donald trump from the very beginning. speaker ryan has hardly been enthusiastic, so they are republicans, but they are hardly donald trump people. trump represents a ground swell in this kocountry that's beyond the washington insider game really of even republican versus democrat. the important point here is that it's not trump against the khans. it's trump against hillary clinton who has utterly failed in our war against islamic terror. the very people, the very movement that killed captain khan, which is so tragic, are strat to take on global islamic terror has failed. and donald trump offers a different vision so there won't
12:10 pm
be so many captain khans who have to die in defense of this country. he has a different strategy. and in terms of to point out mccain is wrong when he says he wouldn't allow khan to come to america. that's not true. what he is saying is that we need to seriously vet people who are coming from countries, from territories of the world that have a high incident of terror. clearly, pakistan is one of those kocountries so we'd have look carefully. if we did, we'd determine that the khan family is highly educated, loves this country, gave his life for this country. the khan family would be welcome and encouraged to become americans. >> this has gone way beyond politics. 23 gold star families wrote a a letter to trump calling the comments personally offensive and demand an apology in that letter. will donald trump apologize?
12:11 pm
>> i don't believe he will. i was just on another network with a gold star mother whose son was lost in afghanistan and she could not be more arkansas de ardent in her praise. many families appreciate his candor and who think that hillary clinton is utterly incapable of being our commander-in-chief. by the way, in terms of the mainstream media, just yesterday hillary clinton told us that the fbi director verified and called her honest. when the fbi director did the exact opposite. the khan story is getting ten times the story. >> that's her interview with chris wallace. we have had that all over our air today too. i'm going to be speaking to the aunt of sergeant torez, who was killed in iraq in 2005. her family is one of the signatories to that letter.
12:12 pm
what would you say to her? again, she's one of these families saying donald trump is is out of line and demand an apoll jie. i want to ask you because we're going to have her on. what would you say to her? >> i would thank her from the be the of my heart for the sacrifice she made of her son and the sacrifices she's still making for america. i would say we want to win you over. the trump campaign wants to win you over because what we have been doing is not working in our economy. it's not working in national security. the world is spinning out of control. too many people are dying, whether it's civilians in europe or the united states. so our current policies aren't working and we want to win you over with a message that will bring us last r security, lasting prosperity in america rather than a third term of more of the same. >> sam clovis, co-chair for trump, told kristen welker that the trump campaign will renegotiate the dates of the
12:13 pm
debates around the nfl schedule and a couple debates are on nfl nights. why does it matter if there's a a football game that night if donald trump is immensely popular and ratings draw. why the concern about being up against football? >> look, i just think you're right. this debate or these debates will be the most watched television experiences in american history regardless of when they are shown. but the trump campaign said let's be sensible and not put it opposite nfl football. let's try to get the entirety of america to tune into a town hall that's going to be incredibly important for our future. we're going to debate no matter what wp. >> is he trying to get out of the debates? >> no. i have seen that narrative and donald trump is relishing these debates. he is wonderful on his feet. that's why he gets so many press dmpbs conferences. sometimes he says things we wish he hadn't, but it's notable how many press conferences he's had.
12:14 pm
hillary clinton is yet to have a press conference in 2016. she's not someone who likes to be on the spot or likes to operate impromptu. she will be forced to do that in the debates. i believe we're going to stay relatively tight in terms of polling into the debates. the debates will determine the outcome of the election. >> steve cortez with the trump campaign, steve, good to see you. thank you for your time. >> thank you. >> for more analysis i'm joined by mya bloom. nice to e see you again. >> nice to see you. >> let's talk about the khan issue and the back and forth. captain khan's mother was on "morning joe." she told the story about talking with her son about how he viewed his service in the u.s. military. i want to play a bit of that. >> he said, mom, i have a responsibility for my soldiers,
12:15 pm
for my regiment and my people. i have a responsibility for them. i won't quit that responsibility. i will love -- i love my soldiers, so i will be -- so i will take care of them. >> is this family connecting with the american public maybe even changing, do you think, the way some voters view muslim americans? >> i think it might. i think that the trump campaign keeps trying to bring it around and members of my trump's team are trying to smear the family is awful. it's awful for people who are patriotic americans who realize that less than 5% of americans serve in the american military and so these people who are sacrificing their children to
12:16 pm
protect the united states really dezerserve our respect in the s way that pat smith deserves our respect and she spoke at the rnc and was very politicized and it's the ip appropriate focus on khan's background whether mrs. khan is allowed to speak. it's clearly a misunderstanding. it promotes this rhetoric, this very negative view of muslim americans, who are very much american. >> for the record, roger stone does not work for the trump campaign, but let me ask whabou what you raised. trump criticized mrs. khan for not speaking at the convention. she responded in yesterday's "washington post." here's my answer to donald trump because without saying a thing all the world, all america felt my pain, she wrote. i'm a gold star mother. whoever saw me, felt me in their heart. this morning on the tod"today" w she said there's no religious reason why she could not speak her mind. does this speak to a -- does
12:17 pm
what trump said speak to a larger misunderstanding of what is allowed as someone who is of the muslim faith? >> absolutely, i think it's a misconception that muslim women are invisible and don't have an opinion. having spent a lot of time in the middle east and a lot of time around muslim women, including women who wear a hijab are opinion nated and speak up. i have seen this at the white house and seen this spear heading extremism. muslim women are a cornerstone of fighting radical islamic trusm. and they keep the mothers away from suicide bombers for fear the mothers will talk them out of it. so this idea that muslim women don't have a voice is a complete misunderstanding of islam and of the role that women play.
12:18 pm
what people will tell you is the first person to convert to islam was a woman. first leader in islam also a woman. women have played really important roles and we shouldn't forget that. >> nice to have you with us. thanks so much. a quick programming note. the khan family will be on "hardball" with chris matthews tonight here on msnbc. as we said, we are awaiting donald trump. when we come back, i'll be joined by one of the gold star family members behind the letter demanding an apology from donald trump. also how speaker paul ryan's office released what heavy dubbed nine must-see photos from july. the first is this picture of the speaker holding up a pocket constitution. we should point out that after mr. khan's speech, that $1 pocket version now a best seller on amazon. i'm billy, and i quit smoking with chantix. i had a lot of doubts going in.

12:22 pm
as commander-in-chief, i'm tired of some folks trash talking america's military and troops. no one has given more for our freedom and our security than our gold star families. >> that was president obama speaking just over an hour ago as the fallout over donald trump's back and forth with the khan family continues. vets released a letter from family members of 23 fallen service members demanding an apology from donald trump. it reads in part, your recent comments regarding the khan family were repugnant and offensive to us. when you question a mother's pain by implying that her religion not grief kept her from addressing an arena of people, you are addressing us.
12:23 pm
i want to bring in one of the co-authors of that letter. she lost her nephew during the iraq war in 2005 after his vehicle was hit by an ied. i see the picture in front of you there. thank you for being with us. tell us more about your nephew. tell us about sergeant torez. he was part of the initial invasion of iraq and then called back to serve a second tour. >> yes, he was part of the first invasion and then the last order that bush signed sent him back into combat. e he knew there was no weapons of mass destruction and we should stop the war and bring our troops home. but i couldn't stop the war so he died just like many others. he died before finding out and

12:26 pm
last thursday. >> mr. khan, i was crying because i felt his pain. i felt his pain and his words. i felt more than anything the pain of his wife that in silence just like all of us we endured this silence that's here for a lifetime. u yo know being patriot ek is like mr. khan like his wife h d holding a flag, holding the u.s. constitution this values because this is what america is about. it's about creating unity. not dividing. who else does donald trump want to duh provide. he wants to divide the families of the fallen. he hasn't had enough to bully the whole world. he needs to go after us. he's a total disgrace. trump, look at me, look right in me. you don't know what it is to lose anybody so do not speak for

the military. we fought very hard to bring the troops home and take care of them. you have sacrificed nothing. a mexican that you want to send over a wall. you know what? you're the biggest racist this country has ever had had and i'm demanding you step down as the gop nominee. >> i don't mean to interrupt. thank you for your thoughts. you're obviously very passionate. we appreciate your nephew's service and your time today. >> thank you. >> donald trump, if you have noticed in the bottom corner of your screen, has begun speaking in clolumbus. he's been speaking about veterans. let's listen to his comments. >> he'd like to do well in this country. i said how are you doing. he said unbelievable. so you're doing a lot of work in the united states not so much.
12:28 pm
you wouldn't believe what's happening in mexico. it's the 8th wonder in the world. that's what he told me. he said they are building a among the biggest plants we have ever built. it's unbelievable. companies are moving out of the united states. columbus, by the way, they are moving out of the used. they are moving out of ohio. they are moving out of michigan. they are moving out of the united states. i said how is the united states doing? he said not so good. but mexico is the 8th wonder of the world. that's going to end, folks. we want mexico to do fine. but we're not going to let him take our jobs anymore. we're not going to let it happen. you look at this area, i have statisticians that love to do this. i can't imagine doing it.
12:29 pm
to me it would be a little boring, but the numbers are horrendous. first of all, i don't know if you saw the number for growth of our country. did you see that? growth. 1.2%. we're sinking. that's oneover the lowest families ever. i think it's the lowest number ever in terms of trying to make a comeback. 1.2%. but in columbus, and i looked at this and this is bad, this is bad. ohio has lost 1 in 3 manufacturing jobs since bill clinton signed nafta. bill clinton signed it. and hillary clinton wants it. think of that. hillary clinton's disastrous trade policies are responsible for the manufacturing job losses in ohio and throughout the other states of this country.
12:30 pm
hi i'll tell you the problem with the machine. it totally controlled the press. all day long, trump, trump, all day long. i just want to bring back your jobs and your safety because we're not safe. 550% more people coming in from syria and other territories. and we have no idea who they are and i've gone to the best law enforcement officials and they said there's no way of you telling that they have all sorts of false statements. they stole our passport machine. they make passports better than

we do. obama is letting in thousands and thousands of people. the people in ohio, the people in the rust belt. everything is rusting and rotting. you lost your jobs. they are moving to mexico. remember my friend with a plan. when you're going to vote, remember this. when you're going to vote, remember my friend with the plant. he says it's the eighth wonder of the world. we're going to renegotiate nafta. it was very funny. i saw hillary clinton saying first time ever we are going to start renegotiating our trade deals. that's been me for years. number one, she won't do a good job of it for a lot of reasons, but one is she's totally controlled by the special

interests. i'll give you an example. i just saw this number. i just read it coming up here. donald trump has raised $19,000 from hedge funds. i don't know how it got in there. hillary clinton from hedge funds has raised $48.5 million. i have a friend who is very wealthy. he doesn't own a hedge fund. but raised $48.5 million. i have $19,000. probably a nice person. but think of it. here's really what's important to me. so i funded my primary. people were very happy. i'm continuing to fund my general election. but we're also taking small
12:33 pm
donations chrks in the primary wasn't a big factor because we sold hats and things. it was cute and people like it. and people put in small money, but i funded it. i guess i'm into $60 million or soon will be over $60 million but i'm continuing to fund my campaign. we're also raising money from people where they seasoned in a check. small donors. you have sent in a check, who sent in a check. whoa. that's fantastic. we only started last month. she's going to have like a fortune. she's going to have a billion and a half because she's going to be totally controlled. e we talk about uranium, the two gentlemen, great people. she had a lot to do with russian uranium. and got paid a fortune for allowing russia to come in and
12:34 pm
talk about uranium. that's big stuff. so we started around the middle of june. and they were saying donald trump didn't raise any money. we didn't start. >> you have been listening to donald trump. billed as a town hall, although it looks more like a rally atmosphere. we haven't been able to get a sense whether he'll take questions. joining me in the studio now is senior political ed tor beth fuey. maybe not surprising that he has not mentioned mr. khan in these
12:35 pm
remarks. he didn't want to talk about it. is he tries to move the narrative forward? >> one can never tell with donald trump. a lot of times he'll bring up the most news making thing when nobody is expecting it. he's very good at keeping people on their toes. >> talking about job loss and trade and nafta and all the things he typically hits on in his rallies particularly in states like ohio, pennsylvania that have seen a lot of job loss. >> before we came to him and complaining ab bt the fire marshal about keeping people out of the event, there were a lot of people waiting outside. one of the things that donald trump has also got an lot of attention for over the weekend is comments about ukraine. turning some heads. in an interview, he said that putin is not going into ukraine and then he tried to clarify with these tweets. when i said that putin is not going into ukraine, you can mark
12:36 pm
it down. i am saying if i am president. already in crimea. seeming to try to clarify they know they are already in crimea. so with all of the obama tough talk on russia and ukraine, they have already taken crimea and continue to push. that's what i said. there's also a question today about paul manafort, one of donald trump's top people, having a long history of work with people in ukraine. can you unpack this for us and help us understand the dialogue? >> we'll try. so paul manafort is a prominent political consultant, but he's been a lobbyist inclouding governments that were shady. and places like the united states has kept a a distance relationship from. he also was the consultant for victor, who was the ukrainian
12:37 pm
president. the ukrainian patriot wearing the orange clothing and pushing away his party. so enter paul manafort, who was hired to rehabilitate his image. and he spent many years doing that and refashioning him as somebody that could be acceptable to the west, even though he was pro russia. he was elected president again in ukraine in 2010 taking that country in this pro-russian direction. he was ousted from office in 2014 for going a little too far in that direction. then we know that putin then sent in his military to capture part of that country. >> is the suggestion that perhaps manafort has these relationships that that has shifted trump's views a bit? >> that's been the suggestion. both of them, trump and manafort, interviewed over the weekend and both denied having
12:38 pm
any factor at all. paul manafort was interviewed by chuck todd. he said trump will keep russia as a foreign country to be dealt with in whatever is in american interest. that's how he's going to treat and conduct business, but not going to have any favoritism, even though he has relationships with members of the ukrainian government. >> one of the things is the republican platform having been changed for having to take out a provision to be provided for ukraine to defend itself. that provision removed from the party platform and the question was did the campaign have something to do with that? >> the reporters who covered that said that was because of the trump campaign that that provision was removed. again, mr. trump said he had nothing to do with it. paul manafort said it didn't happen. but reporters in that room said it did. it was the only thing that the trump campaign interfered with in terms of the platform.
12:39 pm
>> they witnessed people weighing in on this. >> with the platform committee saying they wanted that provision taken out. >> beth, a lot to get into. thank you for that. as we continue to monitor donald trump speaking in columbus, ohio, donald trump is openly courting them, but how do evangelical voters feel about the candidate? jacob soboroff sat down with the pat tor of a major church in colorado who says his church is not convinced they should be voting for the republican nominee. that's after a quick break. ♪ ♪ only those who dare drive the world forward. introducing the first-ever cadillac ct6.

each candidate. jacob soboroff spoke to voters in colorado springs and he joins me now. what did the good folks have to say? >> we have been looking at some of the most important voters. and the ones that could be delivering is the ones in ohio that we're watching today and donald trump is speaking to today are in the form of manufacturing hubs of that state. then in colorado, unexpectedly these swing voters could be the evangelical voters in the colorado springs area reliably republican. donald trump is changing that e equation and i spent time with the pastor of mega church in colorado springs and things don't look so great for donald trump. take a look. >> the thousands of evangelical christians that worship in this building will play a huge role in who wins colorado. there's one goi they listen to more than anybody else and that's who i'm here to see. >> where are we?

>> can i stop you a second? donald trump doesn't seem to be in line with what you're saying. >> that's what puts us at odds. when he says he's going to deport 11 million people, we're thinking about our brothers and our sisters. we're thinking about people who attend church who have lived here 20 years undocumented, but have had families here, run businesses here, not been in trouble with the law, they are members of our church. >> you're saying there's a chance hillary clinton could win over some of your parishioners. i don't think that because her views are so progressive and liberal to many of the voters. so i think what happened is people may stay home and that bothers me. >> that means hillary clinton wins colorado. >> exactly. we don't have the option not to vote. we have to vote our conviction. it's going to be a hold your nose vote. >> when the pastor of the largest evangelical mega church in colorado springs says his parishioners, over 10,000 of
