mark rental applications from african-american people on the back of the application with a "c," "c" for colored, so that they would know who they wanted to rent to and who they didn't. this was a huge lawsuit. the government took action and filed a lawsuit to stop discrimination, not just at one or two, but at 39 different properties owned by the company. >> now the urban league says it invited trump's campaign to speak but the campaign declined. his campaign pushed back on senator kaine's claim citing the previous statement from trump's attorney, quote, there is absolutely no merit to the allegations. this suit was brought as part of a nationwide inquiry against a number of companies and the matter was ultimately settled without any finding of liability and without any admission of wrongdoing whatsoever. overseas, police in london have ruled out any terrorist links to a stabbing attack that claimed the life of an american. but that is little comfort for the family of 64-year-old darlene horton. the only one killed in wednesday night's stabbing spree in london that left five others injured.

her husband is a psychology professor from florida state, teaching in london for the summer, and it was their last night in the city before returning home. as for the 19-year-old suspect, police say he's a norwegian national of somali origin who was mentally unstable. >> whilst the investigation is not yet complete, all of the work that we have done so far increasingly points to these tragic incidents as having been triggered by mental health issues. >> and police say the victims of the attack were apparently chosing at random. protective custody for jailed shooter dylan roof is not foolproof. he was beat up yesterday while showering. an inmate slipped out of his cell, went down a flight of stairs before insulting roof. the inmate hit him in the face and body before officers stopped him. >> i think he was all in a defensive kind of posture. i don't think that it was a back and forth fight, so to speak.

45 past. let's turn to business where economists are expecting some solid job growth from this morning's jobs report after a shockingly low report in may. cnbc's luisa bojesen is joining us live from london. tell us what we can expect from this report. >> yeah, good morning. i was just looking back, may 38,000 is what we had in may. june, 287,000. that blew us out of the water. this time around we're looking for somebody in between 180,000 is what most analysts are forecasting. which would be a solid trend. you're going to want to look at the dollar as well as equity market trade on the back of these numbers. the unemployment rate is

expected to ease a little bit lower as 4.8% which would be taken as potentially good news as well. of course if the number is very strong, it could mean that we're looking at good news being bad news because then the fed could be on course to hike rates before the end of this year. so, that's the big one for this afternoon. now it turns out that trump's empire is taking a bit of a hit after he announced his candidacy. let me explain this. because foursquare, a tech company, they look at people's location data, and they've been out gathering all of this data together and they found that foot traffic to trump hotels, to his golf course courses, to his casinos is down since his candidacy was announced especially the case being for women, that women in blue states, they visited trump properties less in the month of july by 29% less. people going to his properties down by 17% year-on-year for the month. >> that is really interesting. thank you for that graphic, appreciate that. have a good weekend. let's get a check on the weather with nbc meteorologist

bill karins. tonight we've got to get through that opening ceremonies. >> tonight's the big night. probably most watched. forecast this time of year down there is absolutely gorgeous. i mean they're not going to have many issues. tonight will be one of those nights that's nearly perfect, 73 degrees, clear and mild. you can see how beautiful. look at the terrain here, just gorgeous. should be fun at maracana stadium. as far as the forecast goes in areas of the east. this is the cold front today through the weekend. there will be showers and storms with this through the weekend. not so bad later today into this evening. cleveland, detroit, down through indianapolis, maybe columbus, too, isolated. at worst case scenario, it gets a little more juice with it by the time we get to saturday afternoon. a little warmer and we're going to see numerous thunderstorms. it's not going to rain out your saturday in areas of southern new england. we're talking providence, new haven, hartford, boston area down to the cape. could be a period of about a half hour where you deal with shours and thunderstorm. right back through west virginia then by sunday the storms are in the southeast.

234,000 retweets. all right now to a political battle that could end up in court but in a way that you may not expect. missouri governor jay nixon has just been recruited to be a state public defender. the state's chief public defender has sent a letter to the governor telling him that he has to serve because the office is so short-staffed and cash strapped. the public defender michael barrett says it's nixon's fault, especially in the wake of a recent veto to cap case loads. barrett also claims the law allows him to appoint attorneys to work pro bono for the needy and nixon is his first hire. the governor's office objected to the budget cutting claims and says barrett has no right to force the governor to serve. barrett begs to differ and we'll just have to stay tuned on this one i'm sure it's not going to be over any time soon. and i got one more for you alex it's no secret at campaign -- work harder than anyone on the trail but ery once in awhile there's some down time. last night nbc's vaughn hilliard played a classic campaign trail plane game writing a question on an orange and rolling it to the

a jittery london is recovering this morning from wednesday's horrific stabbing spree which we now know claimed the life of an american. darlene horton of florida was the only person killed in the attacks. but what do we know about her killer? nbc's lucy kafanov is joining us from london. what are investigators saying now about the alleged attacker's motivation? >> good morning, alex. well the investigation is still under way, but police say the early evidence points to mental illness of the driving force behind that attack not

radicalization or terrorism. the suspects we now know is a 19-year-old norwegian national of somali descent. police don't consider that relevant to the motivation. he left norway as a small child back in 2002. we don't know a lot about his life here in the uk. but the london police commissioner saying that he had mental illness issues. describing it as a spontaneous attack where the victim seemed to be picked at random. he is in police custody. we do expect him to be charged formally later today. russell square where the stabbing spree unfolded the video you're seeing now is right in the heart of london. it's a busy area. this attack, of course, rattling the people here. and of course the family of the american victim who lost her life darlene horton is in mourning today. she is the wife of a florida state university professor who was teaching in london for the summer, and, alex, it was supposed to be the couple's very last night here in london. they were scheduled to fly to tallahassee yesterday, but their plans, their lives, tragically interrupted.
