perfect. as the weeks and months went past and some of the things we saw at the convention i was certain and set on the record his poll numbers would go down because this is not general election behavior. he said he would pivot, he has not. which is someone who does not keep his word and it's a scam. we end the week with a look at a continued slide in the polls for donald trump. the newly released nbc/"wall street journal" poll puts him at a nine-point disadvantage to hillary clinton. 47% to 38%. hillary clinton is ahead in a four-way match. clinton's nine-point lead is larger than any lead in the 2012 race and the biggest since barack obama's lead in mid-october, 2008. a new national poll has clinton up 15 boints. 15 points. that is a 12-point swing in her favor since last month. this is a direct reaction to

what america has seen. they don't like it. as for the swing states a new poll in florida shows clinton ahead by six. 48 to trump's 42%. now the florida poll comes on the heels of the swing states we showed you yesterday showing clinton opening up some big lead over trump up by 11 points in pennsylvania. 9 points in michigan and 15 points in new hampshire. mark, want to spell it out for us or do you need me to? this is pretty basic. people are turned off, are they not? >> he's running against a weak candidate. >> and losing. >> strong democratic convention, the pick of tim kaine and trump just having a horrible run on a range of issues including fighting with the gold star family leaves him with a perilous situation. but with voter groups that have been part of the republican coalition for a long time. these he's got time to get

things closer before the first debate. but psychologically this is coming at the worst possible time because the democrats are going after elite republicans and working class white voters in a way that puts trump more on the defensive. >> yeah, donny deutsch, you know donald, i do, too. what do you think is going on here? it's self-destructive, at the very least, self-destructive behavior. there is nobody in his campaign and, quite frankly, joe and i have talked to him over the months and just been hopeful that he'll be more positive for america. nothing. in fact, every advice you give him that might be good he does the opposite. it is almost like he doesn't want to win this thing. >> what i find almost insane at this point is that we need an intervention. this is 90 days from this guy having the nuclear codes.

what if he is president? where does the intervention come from? i know donald personally and i like the person. what happened at the two conventions it it stopped being about who they are as candidates and we start to think about who we are as a country and what the democrats served up. that's what we think as a country. the interesting thing and nobody has done this. you guys were talking yesterday on the show, what would you say to trump? i would say to trump, hey, buddy, you say you're worth $10 billion. you say on your balance sheet a 3 billion net worth to your name, you're killing it. your multi-million dollar properties in new york city is not your base that is renting and buying in those. it's educated white people. it's educated black people. >> i'm hearing reservations are down 15%. people are not going to his hotels. >> your net worth is dropping, buddy. you said you were worth 10 and now you're probably worth 1.

that's how you get this guy to turn. >> it's hurting his brand and hurting his bottom line. mike barnicle. >> david ignatius in "washington post" after typing all day yesterday your column appears in the "post" op-ed page and references a couple of things that are out there that are under the surface. one is his inability to understand the concept of loss with the kahn family and the other is his continuing telling the tale of people getting of money coming off of a plane that no one else has ever seen on tv. you reference those things today and in a bleak way. talk about your piece today and donald trump psychologically. >> what i was trying to do this morning in my column, mike. explain one of the riddles of this campaign, certainly the success trump had in getting the nomination in which that despite clear evidence that he was

misstating, falsifying the facts, the most famous example for me is the thousands of muslims cheering in new jersey the day the twin towers went down. despite reputation of that people continue to believe in trump as a candidate. there's a really rich literature that explains why this happens. the more you go at people who have strong beliefs rather than changing their minds with the facts, you sometimes get them to dig in further. it's known as the backfire effect to psychologists. i do think with the attack on the goldstar family, on the parents, trump went a bridge too far in his campaign. i think there is real revulsion at that. here are these parents, obviously, grief stricken.

their son clearly a hero. clearly doing the country's business on all of our behalf. try to argue trump out of these positions, you'd lose. people would just watch and making up their own minds. it seems from the full results, we're getting a good result. >> couple other numbers to sprinkle in here that are important. among women, donald trump trails by 16 points. among nonwhite voters he trailed by 62 points. among african-american votes he trails by 90 points. 91 to 1. michael steele, let me ask you that he just referenced. the $4 million coming off the plane in iran. his campaign was asked, was it possible the video he was thinking of is the one of the hostages being returned in geneva. spokesperson said, yes, that is probably what it is. after he said that, he goes back

on stage and having seen the video of the money coming off the plane. the frustration i heard from a lot of republicans is, man, this is a story we should be seizing on. this is a great story to criticize president obama and criticize the third term that hillary clinton would be his weakness, et cetera, et cetera. this is the video from january of the hostages getting off the plane. that story and his willingness to stick with a story that is not true represents the problem for donald trump. >> part of it, he can't be wrong. once he's established the point, the fact, the conversation, it undermines him in some way. it must, must see it this way. if he backs off of that. what i don't think he appreciates is that there is a genuineness and a gratefulness from the public when you say, oh, you know what, i got that wrong. i thought this video was this,

it wasn't that. i think it goes to what david said. a doubling down, a tripling down. sort of what i have decided and this is what i have determined and this is the point i am going to make. when i look at the ark from last year what donald trump i think now is beginning to appreciate some of us hope he is that in a primary, yeah, you can probably get away with that, but in a general election, you can't. and that is the stark difference between how the public begins to look at these things, as well. this doubling down while it worked in a primary, you're going at each other and they kind of expect that, the public expects that to a certain degree. in the general, they want to see that softer side, if you will. they want to see that vulnerability. these aren't weak words when you apply them to a presidential

candidate. they are actually strengthening words in the eyes of the viewers. >> michael, i just want to ask you a quick question. are you a dad? >> yeah. >> i want to not talk about policy for a moment and i want you to answer from your heart as a dad, as a man. is donald trump in any way fit to be the commander in chief of this country? don't answer me as a republican, answer me as a dad. because to me as a dad i worry for my children. the isis not funny any more. and i want you, you are a smart man and a man that ran that party and you are a father. put all politics aside, are you okay with that man having his hands on the nuclear codes? >> look, i'm not okay with what i see right now, to be honest. >> what you see is what you get. >> look, we'll see by the end of this campaign, by the time i get to the voting booth, i'll have a full assessment -- >> let me help you all out. >> let me just finish the point,

the idea that, you know, because certain people that resolve their conclusions on donald trump sometimes before it and sometimes people are still continuing. my view of it is, i don't like the way this is playing itself out. i know donald trump, i work with dopl donald trump and i -- >> here is the answer to your question, as well. former head and deputy director of the cia, michael morale out with a new piece entitled "i ran the cia and now i'm endorsing hillary clinton." he says this, david ignatius, i would like to go to you after this. i spent four years working with mrs. clinton when she was secretary of state, most often in the white house situation room, in these critically important meetings, i found her

to be prepared, detail oriented, thoughtful, inquisitive. the character traits he has exhibited during the primary season suggest he would be a poor, even dangerous commander in chief. it is already damaging our national security. president vladimirpu putin of russia mr. putin played upon mr. trump's vulnerabilities by complimenting him. he responded just as mr. putin had calculated. mr. trump has taken policy positions consistent with russian, not american, interests. in the intelligence business, we would say that mr. putin has recruited mr. trump as an unwitting agent of the russian federation. david ignatius, is this a crazy concept? >> well, it may be a step too

far. sometimes intelligence -- useful idiots. >> yes. >> that's the term of our -- >> i don't know if that makes me feel better. >> it's a powerful statement by michael morale and he was very close to george w. bush. talking to hillary clinton's closest advisors before both conventions, they said to me, our basic plan is to show every day that donald trump is unsuitable to be president. the amazing thing is that since the conventions started, it's almost as if every day donald trump is following the script that was britain by the democrats. every day he finds some way to show that temperamentally he is not the right person. the worries about him grow and grow. clearly demonstrated in the polls. i just note that was their strategy to make precisely the point that michael morale was

making in that piece. >> off of what david just said. the weekend prior to the democratic convention i was speaking with several people very high up in the hillary clinton campaign and they were estimating one of the cards they were going to play out of the box is the commander in chief card. it seems to be having some effect. do you agree with that? >> i do. two main frames the democrats want taput on them. he's unsuitable to be commander in chief and that he's mean spirited and he's a jerk the shorthand a lot of them use. the reason the incident was so powerful is because it implicated both of those themes that people just find, someone who is ungracious to a goldstar family and someone who doesn't understand the role that our veterans play and our fallen play in our national discourse. >> someone that holds a purple hearts.

and treats it like -- >> hillary clinton running with children says it all and does it all. >> there are positive things about this candaens, but they're not on display ever. it's tough for him now. they're frustrated. they say the press isn't treating him fairly. he's not giving people a reason -- it's going to take a lot for that to happen. there's a reason he has fallen so far in the polls. alienating large blocks of polls that he needed to win. >> to go back to the video thing that people want to focus in the republican party that the idea that there was a $400 million ransom payment, that is a big deal. instead the conversation is instead him talking about the video that he saw and staying with a story that he knows isn't true. he has done that with how many issues? >> what is that video, really. >> the hostages getting off the plane in geneva. it happened on sunday, where

hillary clinton said director and instead more about the family. he steps on moments that could be good for him and republicans. >> this campaign is being written as we speak and i think it's been underestimated this one thing that occurred. it's been talked about but underestimated. when mr. kahn looked into the camera and said you have sacrificed nothing. it's universal. no one gets out of life without losing something. we all understand loss. a parent dying, a child dying. donald trump seems uniquely incapable of articulating his sense of what it is like. >> he's building buildings and making money is the sacrifice. he's showing us his core. i want to stop talking about pivoting. >> even if it happens, it's an act. he's showing us what's there. >> it's not even happening as an

act. >> even tomorrow gop numbers. even if it does, we've already seen the show and all that would be is somebody saying to him, your networth is dropping. >> here's the question for republican leaders. pull your endorsements. please don't make me or anyone at this table on television, you know, i get it. but don't make us the ones to tell you. you need to pull your endorsement. you need to do something strong. you need to lead. we are begging you to lead. and, donny, we could talk about this a little more, but this is hurting his business. talk about the biggest loser, isn't that a show on nbc. he could end up being the biggest loser. he could lose this election huge and his brand could be damaged forever. at this point, that's where he's going. and we haven't been wrong about him so far. i wouldn't mock that, donald trump. still ahead on "morning joe" -- >> what i said about your voice, by the way. >> need you to pivot.

donald trump is taking his campaign to green bay, wisconsin, today. with the state's three highest profile republicans, governor scott walker and house speaker paul ryan all say they will not attend trump's rally. meanwhile, both donald trump and mike pence are downplaying reports. >> he called me the other day and said, do you mind? he likes paul ryan. paul ryan is a good guy. he's a good guy. so, mike called me and he said yesterday and he said, would you mind if i endorsed. i won't do that if it is going to cause any complications or problems. he's the greatest guy and greatest human being. he said that. i like him, he's a friend of mine would you mind if i endorse him. i said, mike, you like him? go ahead and do it 100%.

he endorsed him. >> of course, i support john mccain and kelly ayotte and all our republican incumbents. donald trump and i are in constant communication and we talked a little bit yesterday. i told him that paul ryan was my friend of many years and a strong, conservative leader and i told him to support him and he strongly encouraged it. >> when asked pence did not endorse senators mccain and ayotte. i remember traveling with john mccain to indiana to campaign for several times for a desperate mike pence. shame on him, #karma. speaker ryan meanwhile is standing by his endorsement of donald trump, though he did hint that a possible future reversal during radio yesterday. >> would there ever be a bridge too far? >> i always said, of course, there are moments in that. i won't get into the speculation

or hypothetical. that goes with any situation and any kind of race. but right now, i think it's important that the voters, you know, he won the delegates. he won the thing fair and square. it's just that simple. we just came out of our convention and, yeah, he had pretty strange run since the convention. you would think we ought to be focusing on hillary clinton and it is distressing that that's not what we're talking about these days. >> anyone hoping that paul ryan would pull back his endorsement of donald trump was disappointed by what he heard. he went on in some detail that donald trump won this nomination fair and square and he'll expect the vote of grass roots republicans. >> yeah, i still think that's a legitimate point despite how others may view it. at the end of the day, this is still a political process. this is about winning the white house in november. this is about holding a majority in the house and retaining your majority in the senate. that's the politics of that.

we can grab the moral high ground on a whole bunch of things about how we feel about donald trump saying this, that or the other thing. speaker ryan has an obligation to his members to make sure their seats are safe. so, he's trying to, you know, thread this needle very carefully because he's got a very anxious, upset base that he's got to be concerned about. he has a donor class that is upset and bothered. so, all of these pieces are being triangulated one way or another right now. a lot of republicans, quite honestly. donald trump, i said it yesterday and i'll say it it again. donald trump has to come and meet the party halfway if this thing is going to work. otherwise a cluster you know what right through november and a lot of people in the party are going to be in the very awkward position of trying to thread that needle day in and day out. there will come a point, quite honestly, they will stop doing that. >> i mean, it should happen

hundreds of thousands of refugees and they're coming from among the most dangerous territories and countries anywhere in the world. the boston bombers, remember the boston bombers -- what a horrible thing that was. arrived through the political asylum process, right. the younger brother applied for citizenship and was naturalized on september 11th, 2012. the older brother had a pending application for citizenship. that's wonderful. we take them. we take them. how violent and how vicious and how horrible was that? okay. and if they're not here, we don't have that incident. hillary clinton wants to have them come in by the hundreds of thousands. just remember.

supporters. correct his remaining fans may only deepen their attachment. >> david, off of that piece, off of what you have written, off of your knowledge of people on both sides of the aisle in washington, can you envision any time soon the following happening. some republicans standing up and saying, country first. country is more important than priority. because donald trump just in that clip, that brief clip that we showed talking about somali refugees in maine, he is incorrect. he's wrong. somali refugees that lived in maine peacefully for a decade and then keeps s regurgitatine stuff. >> we've seen prominent republicans refusing to endorse trump, pulling back, criticizing him. john mccain's statement about

the khan family was very moving. no one can speak about the nation at war quite the way john mccain has. i think there will be more of those. michael steele got to the basic point that republicans face is if they're seeing a tidal wave election that can sweep house and senate away from republican control to make some tough calculations. final point i would make, if we have a major terrorist attack in the united states between now and election day, i think you're in a very different situation. it plays to donald trump's strengths and difficult for the democrats and difficult for president obama. that must be something that they think in the end be a game changer for them. >> which is really scary and wrote about this a couple months ago and i've been feeling this way. you know the jihadists and the fundamentalists want trump in there. they want a guy representing our country dividing the world and saying muslims are this and muslims are that. if you do that math, they want

it in there. the thing that would really help trump is a terrorist attack. then you go, wow, is this -- is there, i don't want to start to frighten people. but if you do the math, you go the terrorists and radical islamists want trump in there. if the way trump gets in there is a terrorist attack thus, i get scared. you really start to do that logic and it's frightening. >> so, peggy newnan writes in "washington post" the week they decided he was crazy. i think this week marks a certain coming to terms with where the election is coming. politics is about trends and tendencies. the trends for donald trump are not good and he tends not to change. here is the truth of life. when you act as if you are insane, people are liable to think you're.

president obama just didn't talk about donald trump yesterday but talked about the military fight against isis. a u.s. warplane taking off heading for targets in hibbia. according to officials, the operation successfully disabled an isis tank. the u.s. will continue to

support efforts against the islamic state and repeated his past claim that military might will not be enough. >> even though we need to crush on the battlefield. drives people to violence, then groups like isol will keep emerging and the international community will continue to be at risk in getting sucked into the kind of global whack a mole where we're always reacting to the latest threat. that's why we're also working to counter. >> it was clear president obama was making the point there is no easy answer here. this is going to be a long fight that we can have planes taking off from aircraft carriers as much as we want. this is a battle against an ideolo ideology. ending all the syria meetings with his national security team saying is there anything more we could be doing and no simple

answers. is there more based on what you know that we could be doing? >> i think the president has begun to use more of the tools that are available to him. the bombing attacks on libya this week were significant. the threat that isis would break out in libya and make that a new safe haven, which was in january, something everybody was worried about in washington is now much reduced. number of fighter has gone from over 5,000 to under 1,000 and the ones that are there are really on the run. i thought the president was giving himself a report card yesterday on where things stand before he heads off on his vacation. you could see the way in which he's worried. they're talking about the possibility of playing whack a mole. worried he'd go to martha's vineyard and one of these days he'll hear from his communication's people. he was telling the country we are doing as much as we can and we can't stop everything but you

can see the concern that he feels as president. >> david, for those few people among us who are not paying attention to the threat of terrorism, talk briefly, if you could, about homegrown terrorism here and the access to weapons here in the united states that terrorists find in no other place in the world. >> well, the striking way to say it, mike, is just to quote what isis leaders have been saying in their own internal communications. that the united states is hard to get into. it is hard to operate there. but a very attractive target because weapons are so easily obtainable. made this point you can get a gun if you don't have a criminal conviction. brothers and sisters, this is a place where you can think about taking action. it should concern people who are focused on the terrorism threat. in general, i think the estimation and intelligence professionals in the u.s. and

how are we doing today? >> we're doing fine. mika, how are you? i had the laryngitis thing last week. >> i literally had no voice for two days and you all couldn't be more pleased. >> michael steele is wishing it comes back. >> michael. look, i'm just being clear and i don't think you're allowing yourself deep inside subconsciously. i don't think you're allowing yourself to be honest. >> mika, i don't think you are allowing yourself to be honest either. you didn't listen to donald trump in the last cut there. whether you like him or not, you have to vote for him. >> you have to vote for him. >> so, great. >> i got your ballot for you. >> thanks. >> the newly released, let me help you out. i'm not going to need it. the newly released nbc "wall street journal" poll puts donald

trump at and clinton is ahead 43% to 34% in a four-way matchup. clinton's nine-point lead is larger than any lead measured at this point in the 2012 race. a new mcclatchy poll has clinton up 12-point swing in her favor since last month. as for the swing states a new suffolk florida poll. comes on the heels of the swing states we showed you yesterday showing clinton opening up some big leads over trump. up by 11 points in pennsylvania, 9 points in michigan and 15 points in new hampshire. chuck todd, looks like it's finally taking a tol. >> next week could be more painful for trump when he watches the polls come in. we have only seen a handful of

swing state votes. i know of private polling we've heard. you'll keep seeing it and we'll have one of the shock ones, too, where a red state. we already know about utah where there will be another red state next week where we'll see clinton ahead in a state you're going, what? there's definitely been some shift. there's sort of a you see in our poll and almost every one of these polls a couple similar patterns. number one, a ten-point advantage of democratic unity. she's doing better with democrats than trump is republicans. she's getting double-digit support among republicans. it's in the teens but sitting there at double digits. 12, 13, something like that. the only good news for trump is his message tests through the roof. but it's everything else. it's when he's attached to it that becomes the problem. and when his name is involved

that is the problem. >> the message being what, chuck? >> two different ways. we used just a basic, who is more likely to change business as usual in washington. do you want to see, essentially status quo or something different? we tested one of his lines in the speech from his acceptance speech. didn't attach to his name to it, but just his line. and more voters thought it described what america, what was going on in america today. the point is, his law and order message. a lot of it tests very well. but it's when you attach him to it that it becomes more problematic. >> chuck, does his base move at all given the difficulties his campaign has had in the last ten days? does his base move at all? >> well, it looks like it has. look where his numbers have been sitting. depends on what his base is. his core base is somewhere between 25 and 40. the other thing i've noticed here i can't believe the number of national polls where he's below 40.

you know, he's not, he's not, that is a, he is sort of falling through a new floor, which means his base is smaller than the actual republican base. >> when you look at a four-way race in our poll yesterday put gary johnson and trump was at 33%. let's look through some of these numbers specifically. clinton leads by nine points but her favorability rating still upside down. 53 have an unfavorable view, but donald trump does worse. his favorable rating is at 28% in our poll with 61% and hillary clinton strongest groups include a 16-point advantage among women. 52-point advantage among nonwhite voters and a 91 to 1 margin among african-americans. >> you're telling me he has a shot? >> yes, i am. and seven-point lead with white voters with a college degree, 47

to 40. another interesting note, secretary clinton is now effectively tied with trump among men. 43 to 42. trump has a five-point edge among white voters. 40 to 45% and she needs to win by 20 points to be competitive. excuse me, trump does. trump holds narrow leads among seniors and independents and that mcclatchy/marist poll. hillary clinton 41, gary johnson 23 and jill stein 16. one number that jumped out at me is hillary clinton among white voters with a four-year college degree is plus seven against donald trump. that is a group of voters that mitt romney won by 14 points. >> trump can't -- look, things change. this is a snapshot.

obviously, trump would get creamed. it's not possible to win the general election in august. it is arguably possible to lose it in august. and i think this is just a direct result of the two conventions plus trump's post-convention antics which i think quite rightly have raised red flags among voters who have looked at him and what he's saying and what he's doing and as chuck said no longer so much his message as him. as this guy who voters have questions about and whether or not they want this guy in the oval office. >> hey, chuck, it's donny. he can pivot and snapshot and eight or ten points and that could evaporate. we understand the clinton campaign is a very smart campaign. the things he has done and said, even if he stops, they're not going away. you look at that amazing ad that

hillary clinton is running with the children. how granular her campaign is and getting the votes out and microtargeting. i can't see it getting better for trump. that stuff's not going away. >> i don't either. but i can't believe we're talking about polls and we haven't. i mean, i'm still laughing at mark halperin's tweet from last night. >> which one is that? >> he said polls are just a snapshot in time but sometimes a snapshot of a severed arm. >> oh, my gosh. i have to say, halperin, that was a drop the mike moment. >> wow. >> it was hard to top that. >> i followed the advice of my former colleague, yeah, i said it on the show, but then i tweeted it, as well. >> that's fantastic. >> the reality is, yes, if the election was held today, trump

would lose. including some senate seats that we aren't talking about and the house majority in peril and donald trump losing the white house. demographics they rely on to hold the majority. >> let me just paint what the next two weeks are going to look like. the clinton campaign has bought time in the olympics. the trump campaign has not. by the way, these ads. they did a few warm and fuzzy spots in july. everything now is just -- a new one this morning that is republican conservatives critics. republican critics and conservative critics on foreign policy of donald trump. and this is going to, she's going to pound the next two weeks and, look, this race is probably going to, the gap is probably going to widen. >> chuck, we have that ad. let's roll it right now. >> if he governs consistent with

some of the things he said as a candidate, i would be very frightened. >> he's been talking about the option of using -- >> this is not somebody who should be handed the nuclear codes. >> you have to ask yourself, do i want people of that temperament in control of the nuclear codes. as of now, i'd have to say no. >> then you look at the piece written by mike morale this morning. >> former cia director -- >> i said this for months. you have to be afraid of this man and that will be the message that will stun and continue and, look, if you can judge hillary clinton so far on her competency based on the campaign and based on the commercials, it's lawless. if this is a kind of a trial for how you're going to behave as president. >> well, also, mark, it gets to

an issue we raised yesterday. donald trump's very successful fund-raising period. he raises an enormous amount of money showing definite signs of strength. almost a bernie sanders kind of strength with small donations and, apparently, no apparatus to spend that money. >> yeah. i'll tell you the other thing is this is when politics bad gets worse. some donors have said to me, we're upset that he raised so much money online because it is going to mean, i don't need to change. raising money from grassroots why do i need to change? >> bad business. we'll get to this a little bit later. >> he clings to the positive. >> not a lot of positive to cling to. he focuses on poll numbers. he's obsessed with them. it's a thing for him. >> the rigged polls. >> i noticed he hasn't gone there yet.

i thought it was interesting the other day when he said i look at these crowds and i don't understand the polls. i don't know -- i noticed that he hasn't gone to rig polls. by the way, the other thing that anybody noticed why trump, the clinton campaign is very cleverly, they try to run these ads in ways where they know trump's watching. and there's a reason why -- if you watch. he always responds. look at how many times he has specifically responded to the m kelly and they quote him on the disabl reporter and he feels he needs to respond to them to this day. the ad runs on stuff that he watches. >> an old trick in the ad business, you would always take out a billboard across from the ceo's office. so right now i would be shocked

in the next few days or weeks we don't see an ad on west 57th street a billboard right in trump's face. >> the irony -- >> he talked about how many times he would stop and watch him -- >> the irony is trump was a master in using television and using psychological war fare and the clinton people are using both of those tools very effectively. >> democrats polling ahead when it comes to democrats' preference. 47% of registered voters would like to see democrats back in power. 43% prefer that republicans keep the ga-- you're right, trump wi leave the lasting stain on republicans. do republicans know this, gene? to republicans who hope to emerge from the donald trump

fiasco with any shred of political viability of self-respect. i offer some unsolicited advice. run, do not walk, to the nearest exit. along with so many other elected republicans you are not fools. you are well aware that the party of lincoln has nominated for president a man unfit to hold office. i understand that puts you in a tough spot politically. but even if he loses, republicans, trump will leave a lasting stain. if you tell us such a man should be president, why should the nation ever believe anything else you say? >> yeah. well, you know, look, the way that this is going right now, this is a decision that a lot of republicans who have serious reservations about trump who

actually many don't want to see him be president but feel they have to support him, if they haven't already reached, they're going to get to it soon. and i think they really are going to surrender a lot of credibility and a lot of good will and good faith with the american people by continuing to pretend that they think donald trump would be a good president when they really don't. they just don't. >> no, i don't understand. chuck, we have to go. just really quickly. educate me. why support someone who's wrong. but that's happened to paul ryan and to many others. just screw them over. completely not made a deal. the dealmaker. why is this good for him politically to stick by him? >> look, it's -- this was a case where they thought they had two options and both were bad

options. and both would melt the republican party in different ways. look, ryan made the calculation that if he didn't stand by him, number one, he could get, he could put the house in jeopardy because if the party. now, granted the party may be in jeopardy anyway. all these calculations about supporting trump have been about keeping the fragile voting coalition together enough to keep the house. now, in the long run, it may have been that's a, you know, it was a bad bet. but they know the other way how that goes. they know what happens there. you alienate the trump wing of the party and, you know, who knows where they end up. that was the fear. they didn't have a big enough anti-trump coalition to keep the house. >> if you want an indication of how deep and heart felt paul ryan's endorsement the candidate will be in wisconsin today. donald trump will be there and paul ryan is going to go pick up the dry cleaning.

he's not even going to stand by. >> you've got to be kidding me. >> scott walker and ron johnson. three leading figures of the party are not going to be there with trump. >> the place to be tuesday night and wednesday morning is paul ryan's campaign headquarters when he wins this primary and press conference wednesday morning when he reacts to what donald trump has done. >> what do you have coming up on sunday on "meet the press." tim kaine and i believe it's the first full fledge sunday for him since being the nominee and we also have governor rick scott of florida. he's also the head of super pac. >> one way to sell it there, thanks, william. >> i'll be right there with you on sunday morning. >> gene robinson, thank you, as well. i'm sure republicans will follow all of your advice. tom is here to help us sort through all these polls and put them in a little bit of context.

sd >> can we move on here. >> he usually doesn't accept urging. >> joining us now from green bay, wisconsin, nbc news correspondent haley jackson. some of wisconsin's top republicans are not going to be at the rally for the republican nominee. >> i can hear the shock and surprise in your voice, mika. i can only picture the expression on your face. donald trump showing up at this rally here in green bay. this is not trump territory. paul ryan here who is, by the way, in the state given that his primary is coming up on tuesday. this is a state that trump did not do well on in the primaries. this was not one of his strongholds. when you think back to how this unfolded. this is a state that ted cruz did well and, hey, maybe ted

cruz could end up winning the republican nomination because he did so well in this state. trump has an uphill battle here. here is the trouble with wisconsin. this is a linchpin to his rust belt state strategy. if you look at polling now, doesn't look great. loses states like virginia and he has to win not just ohio and pennsylvania but places like wisconsin and michigan. went for barack obama back in 2012. not an easy state for him. he's coming here and going to be at staying on message and staying on script with some of these comments now from house speaker paul ryan. ryan continues to back his candidate and he's saying some interesting things about him. take a listen to what he said about a blank check. >> would there ever be a bridge too far? >> i always said of course there are moments in that. i'm not getting into the hypothetical. that goes with any kind of race. but right now i think it's

important that the voters, you know, he won the delegates. he won the thing fair and square. it's just that simple. >> here's what i'll be listening for, guys, when we look to trump's rallies later on today. two of them. one in des moines and one in green bay. second of all, what does he say about this iran plane. the plane thing that you just bumped in with that breaking news. yes, maybe it is trump admitting he is wrong, or maybe he is just saying the networks are showing the wrong video. it's not clear what that video means at this point. that's what i'm looking to. green bay later on tonight. i know you probably wanted lambeau field in the background. i had to veto that and go with the background. >> not your place to editorialize as an eagles fan. we'll talk to you. let's bring in real clear

politics tom. so many poll numbers out today and yesterday including our jou. what is your big take away? >> the big take away, hardly a silver lining anywhere for donald trump to be found. the big take away, looks like hillary clinton, her convention did reinforce all her positive aspects over trump. her temperament and her experience and all that and we'll have to wait and see whether this is a fundamental shift in the race or part of that convention bounce and the race goes back to where it was a little bit before. we don't know that yet. we'll need more data and need more time. >> is there a certain voter area that jumps out the most. as you comb through, she's up big with women and up huge with and we were talking this morning advantages with white voters seniors, independents that you'd

expect, but not by the margins he needs to be up by. >> exactly. he needs to really expand those margins and they're actually shrinking. among independents they're shrinking. among the voters he needs and also among republicans. hillary clinton has more democrats behind her now than donald trump has republicans. he's continuing. we're talking about paul ryan and the interparty fights going on right now and that's reflected in these poll numbers, as well. >> michael steele. >> tom, is there a correlation or finding a correlation between donald trump and those senate democrats that are on the bubble. take, for example, kelly ayotte is her performance before donald trump won the primary worse than after he won the primary? >> i'd have to go back and look, michael. what we do know, these are individual polls and we want to get more data to confirm the results. this is the first round of polls where we're showing donald trump

dragging down senate candidates. we saw it in the pennsylvania poll wheretume toumey is behin. we'll have to wait and see. this is the big concern for republicans, right? that donald trump, again, not just the margin, that is important. but the fact that he's at 32% in pennsylvania and 36% in michigan. these are numbers that frighten republicans who are down and looking up and not seeing and getting a whole lot of help. >> michael steele is now the time when republican leaders actually do the right thing because the polls are actually telling them that they would suffer if they didn't? is now the time that maybe perhaps a point i was making earlier comes to bear? come on. >> no, now is not the time. because the race is just beginning to be engaged, mika. that is this process. we are going to play it out and fight the fight on the ground and help these candidates.

that's what paul ryan and others are trying to do and talking about doing. the party is not putting up a white flag on this. we've been in this situation before on the democrat side and the republican side where august, the numbers don't look so good. but the fight is after labor day. let's see how this things progresses and let's see what donald trump does. maybe there's light in that tweet this morning. who knows. still more runway for this campaign. i think a lot of people in the campaign appreciate that donald trump needs to appreciate that, as well. if he wants to be successful. >> but you were just talking about, basically, following polls and seeing how you could win even if it's wrong. >> yeah. i mean, you're talking about a poll on august 5th, mika. you're not going to throw up the white flag because you're 32%. >> i want to ask mark a question. your experience, runway. when does runway stop? when do the numbers get to the point where from a survival

microtargeting. >> plus the electoral college advantage. >> if anything, this is the time now, regardless of these polls, that everything swings in her favor. >> plus, remember, you can have all the runway you have, but you have to have a plane. there's no plane. >> tom, as you look through these numbers as we turn, head for labor day here and for the first debate. what would you be looking at as leading indicators of where this race will end up in november? >> we have to stay focused on the battleground states because those are the most important. i'm looking at donald trump's favorability. this is the thing. hillary clinton managed in the wake of this convention to move her favorable, unfavorables by a net positive of ten points. her unfavorable came down six. da donald trump's have not moved at all. to cross that threshold, i agree with mark. the debates now become a pivotal moment. one of the moments where trump

said. so, i think given those choices it's pretty easy for me to say i'm not going to vote for hillary. >> does it give you pause like general michael hayden or today mike morale deputy at the cia say we cannot elect this man to be president. these are people who understand what it means to be commander in chief and the power of that position. does that give you pause at all to hear from people like that? >> these are guys i know and respect a great deal. they're great patriots. they served their country well. but, again, the alternative is somebody that literally looks you in the eye and doesn't tell you the truth. and has continued to do that. not just i made the mistake. she did things she didn't do and this was approved by professionals at the department. >> for a second there i didn't know who you were talking about. >> if i can finish my point, i think you need to look at both

sides here. i don't find hillary clinton a safer alternative. >> a say safer bet maybe. >> i don't think so. i would rather have somebody who i disagree with some of the things they say or they won't tell me what the truth is. that's a very sobering thing. that's where we've been in this campaign where the secretary is concerned. >> so, what are some of the things that you don't like that donald trump has said? >> i just read with him about the muslim ban and frankly he's backed off that and we're not going to allow people in the country from terrorist controlled areas, that's a perfectly reasonable position. that's not his original position. so, i never had a candidate that i didn't disagree with on something. >> congressman, how about mr. trump's take on sacrifice. we watched what happened with the khan. what a comparable sacrifice in his life is, he said building

buildings. do you agree with that? no comparable sacrifice to a family that lost a son in combat defending this country. particularly for a muslim family in this particular kind of conflict, it's an act of extraordinary harri heroism. that was a misstatement and mistake and should have never been said and unacceptable. i think it's pretty unacceptable to telial put thousands of coal miners out of work. both candidates have put their foot in their mouth several times along the way. >> excuse me, sir, when hillary clinton put her foot in the mouth she went back there and addressed people and owned up to it. tell me except one time for a tweet that donald trump has owned up to any of the raissi things he has said. i don't exactly know how you can be comfortable with this candidate. i can't understand it, but i am going to continue to ask. now, tell me, are you

comfortable with how he's treating kelly ayotte and other republican leaders who desperately need his endorsement or some sort of deal to be made. >> first of all, with all due respect. i don't think they desperately need his endorsement. these are people who have won on their own in their respected states and districts. i think you'll see that on tuesday when i expect that speaker ryan will win pretty handily in his race. if i were advising a candidate and the first thing i'd tell him don't put yourself in the middle of other people's races. i don't think mr. trump should be in anybody's primary. i would say why bring it up at all? you should be talking about hillary clinton and talking about the security of the country and talk about a 1.2% economic growth rate and focus on that. if you want to unify republicans, go after hillary clinton. you'll get them all pretty quickly that way. i think this has been a week of

missteps. do i think it's irretrievable? no, i don't. >> what if you find these missteps continue and he does not talk about the things you want to hear from and perhaps doesn't have the capacity to because that's a legitimate question at this point. >> i doubt he doesn't have the capacity to. he went into his convention behind and regardless for all the criticism he came out of it ahead. he had a pretty normal convention. he's been pretty successful in a lot of primaries. no question, he's reached parts of the electorate that republicans don't traditionally reach. that's a serious contribution. now, let's see where he goes. the problem is, you really do have a first-time candidate. it's like if you were a professional fighter, that's not what most people do. i'm not surprised that you see missteps along the way. the question is, how will it go? i agree with something mark said earlier. i think the debates will be

pretty critical in this. >> michael steele here. >> how are you? >> i should say chairman, actually. >> it's all good. how is speaker ryan right now navigating this fine thread between daonald trump and the tensions around this campaign and the caucus as a whole? how do you see that playing out or going into the fall and with the members inside the house and the senate for that matter? >> well, i think, i think the speaker has done very well. frankly, when he's disagreed, he's said so and been respectful. but he's endorsed the nominee and accepted the verdict of his voters. i think one of the things that, as i look at the numbers, i don't think hillary clinton has much in the way of coattails. i've never seen anybody that has a pull peepinal to office. i think the presidential race is

going on between two candidates. i think what happens down ballot, particularly at congressional districts is likely to be determined what individual members do, not likely to be affected too much on what goes on at the presidential level. i think paul is aware of that and put us in that position and also put together a pretty aggressive platform for us to run on. things that are separate that are our own agenda. created by individual members of the house and the republican party. i think it can sustain itself through tough elections just as it did in 2012. >> congressman in both 1990 and 1996 you'll recall that the wings of your party trying to re-elect and senate republicans distance themselves from the top of the ticket. could you imagine a scenario this year where you guys decide you're better off distancing yourself from donald trump to keep your majority? >> i think it's a little early

to make that call. the right thing to do for any candidate is run your race within your district. most candidates have a pretty good idea of what they need to do and say given what the electorate is and, you know, if they've been successful in the past because they broadly reflect what those people believe. i leave that to them. now, you know, in terms of what we do at the top of the ticket, again, i think, as i said, i think that is in and of itself. not likely to have the down ballot implications. >> congressman, of all the people we have on from washington you always seem to be among the most grounded. >> absolutely. >> that's because i'm from oklahoma. >> and that's where you are today. and i understand your support for the top of your ticket. you know, there's no argument here with the top of your ticket. i get it. that's who you are and that's where you're coming from. let me ask you, in listening to donald trump and watching his campaign now for over a year,

can you think of one example to give us where donald trump seems to understand the concept of human frailty, of vulnerability loss of the human condition? just one? >> that's a great question. i don't know him well enough. i have never met him. it is in july when he came to address the republican conference and i saw him at a convention so i can't give you that kind of personal insight. it is unusual. if you're running for president i have known everybody r for president long before they were running since ronald reagan. it is sort of outside the political realm. you know, that's actually part of his appeal. people don't think we are moving in the right direction. they want to shake it up a lot. the real question is do they

think he can lead them in the right direction and it will shake it up in the right way. >> congressman called before we let you go, if it were possible would you nominate him to be the party after he resigned with the thunder? >> after he blinrings us a coup of nba title -- listen, we hated losing him. there's not a finer person than durant and his mom and what they did for this city. they did for my hometown. when we got torn up by tornados and you guys were there i'm very grateful for that. kevin durant wrote us a million dollars personal check. we had two great guys. we have a great one remaining now. i think he will lead us to where we want to go. >> thank you very much for being on the show this morning.

private server. my instinct is that it was to some how broaden their footprint and maybe even building themselves. do i think it's criminal or nefarious that's dangerous? i don't. i don't. i think it was stupid and perhaps self-serving. we ought to be very worried. there's nothing good happening here. you have to make a decision. you have to look at what is the safer bet. look at hillary clinton's twitter feed right now. look at it. look at her career. look at how she has been saying the same thing about certain policies for decades. this is a real candidate who made some legitimate mistakes along the way for sure. >> donald, he corrected a fact

today and he is a real candidate. >> by the way, there are a lot of people in this country who think the exposure was at least reckless and perhaps criminal. >> i'm telling you what my gut is. >> i understand. what's the chances? w what do the voters think? let's look at some of these. the poll puts donald trump at a 9 point disadvantage, 47-38. secretary clinton had 33. in a four-way match up that includes stein. it is larger than any lead measured in the 2012 race and the biggest since the ten point lead in mid-october, 2008. it has clinton up 15 points.

it is a 12 point swing in her favor. clinton racks up leads in the swing states. up 6 in florida, 11 in pennsylvania, 15 in new hampshire. signs of trouble too in some of the thraditional red states. it is a democrat has not won since 1999 finds clinton ahead 44-40. clinton has the advantage 41-38 over clinton. >> trump over clinton. you dig into these nbc wall street journals among nonwhite voters. it is 91-1 among african americans. he is clinging at this point now by narrower margins than ever. >> and i'm sticking with the

firm of halperin and steele on this. polls are a reflection of a moment. i get that. i think we paid too much attention to this daily various polls that we get. i think the whole thing is when is dinner going to be served? the first debate. >> let me ask you a question. unless i'm crazy the debates play so heavily to hillary clinton. that's when it's -- yes, that's when you really can't just say make america great again. that's when you to know where it is. >> biggest since the moon landing. >> all hillary has to do is ask a serious fact chul question. >> what if she says do you want to lace up really. >> it is not a speech.

it is a one on one contest. trump has not gone through that. >> and i was going to say the answer to michael's question, she turns to donald trump and says do you really want to lock me up? he looks at her and goes yes i do and lays out the indictment for why. it has just as much residence. that's what this race is about. this is not a policy race. it has never been a policy race. it is not about a lot of things that the people in washington think it's about. we see it with donald trump. the voters are looking at this through a very different primz. >> it is always the gut. people never vote on policy. they vote on their gut.

donald trump is taking it to green bay, wisconsin. ron johnson and paul ryan all say they will not attend trump's rally. donald trump and mike pence are down playing reports between two men after they endorsed paul ryan in his primary race. >> he said do you mind? paul ryan is a good guy, actually. he is a good guy. so mike called me and he said yesterday and me said would you mind if i endorsed?

i won't do that if it will cause any complications. he is the greatest human being. he said i like it. i will not do it if i say no. he endorsed him. >> of course i support john mac kab a john mccain. we talked a little bit yesterday. i told him that paul ryan was my friend of many years. he is a strong conservative leader. he strongly encouraged it. >> when asked initially he did not endorse mccain leading to tweet i remember traveling with john mccain to campaign for several times far desperaor a d mike pence.

speaker ryan is standing by his endorsement though he did hint at a possible future reversal during radio interviews yesterday. >> would there ever be a bridge too far where you have to set -- >> of course there are moments in that. i will not get into the speculation. none of these things are speculatives of any situation in any kind of race. right now i think it's important that the voters, you know, he won the thing fair and square. it's that simple. he has had pretty strange run since the convention. you would think we ought to be focusing on hillary clinton. it is distruessing that's not what we are talking about these days. >> hoping he would pull back his endorsement, was disappointed by what he heard.

>> and i still think that's a legitimate point despite how others may view it. at the end of the day it is still a political process. it is about winning the white house in november. it is about holding a majority in the house and retaining a majority in the senate. that's the politics of this. we can grab the moral high ground. speaker ryan has an obligation to his members to make sure their seats are safe. he is trying to, you know, thread this needle very carefully. he has a very anxious upset base. a lot of republicans quite honestly, and it's the difficulty that we all see, donald trump has to come and meet the party half way if this thing is going to work. it will be a cluster you know
